- On April 15th of 2023, Canadian Pacific Railway and Kansas City Southern officially became one company with the largest railway merger in history. To celebrate the one year anniversary of this event, the new company, dubbed CPKC, sent former Canadian Pacific Railway steam locomotive number 2816 on a landmark excursion trip from Calgary, Alberta to Mexico City, Mexico. This trip, dubbed the Final Spike Tour, is set to travel through all three countries through which CPKC travels, making various stops along the way at public display sites. In this video, we take a brief look at a few of the scenes I captured of the train traveling through North Dakota and Minnesota. In the coming weeks, a longer video will be put together covering a section of the locomotive's trip.

Can’t believe CPKC was founded on my birthday
i finished college that day
My birthday was on the 11TH of April
Same. It’s hard to believe as well
Epic to see CP 2816 under steam!
Indeed! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for sharing this! Incredible!
Any time! I’m glad you enjoyed it.
That is most beautiful steam locomotive I have ever seen!
I really like the 2816. One of my favorite steam locomotives. Thanks for watching!
Those CP diesels in the consist are equally as cool and beautiful as the 2816 IMO.
Agreed. I’d love to see them leading a train at some point.
@@CoasterFan2105where the diesels under power as well, you think?
I think those diesels were under power, plus IIGIR, those two have PTC.
Definitely. There’s one scene in the video where they’re coming up a grade and you can really hear the diesels working.
That Whistle! 🔥🔥🔥
Great Video Always! Cool they had those E7s trailing behind the tender. Keep Up the Great Work!!
Thank you! It’s a great looking train!
Those are FP9s not E7s.
The billowing smoke from the locomotive is artistic scene. Just watching the train pass by sends nostalgic chills through me.
0:11 Awesome videos with Steam Train CP 2816. 🙂❤️
Thank you!
What a grand adventure. That's a 4,500 km (almost 2,800 miles) journey.
Definitely not a short trip! It’ll really be something to see when it goes over the former KCS down into Mexico.
Sadly CP 2816 never visited my area
Maybe it will eventually!
That's really good and Absolute Fantastic Steam train! Keep going, dude!
I can't for Steam Train CP 2816, thank you for your preview mike-ster.
Thanks for watching! Glad you liked it.
I saw it with my son in Moose Jaw and got to catch it in action outside of Moose Jaw too. Definitely a fun experience.
It’s really something to see!
Hey I'm super excited that you got to chase it. I wish CPKC capitalized off of having the Final Spike tour as a public excursion.
Thanks! I’m glad I was able to see it! 2816 is a neat locomotive.
Very cool steam trains
Thanks for watching!
@@CoasterFan2105 your welcome
So glad you were able to come experience the 2816! Those are some very nice shots of the train. Can’t wait for the full video.
Thanks so much!
Nice to see the shots of 2816! Looking forward to watching the longer video 👌
Many thanks!
Beautiful footage of those beautiful locomotives (steam and diesels). And the entire train is something else! 2816 and the 2 E units are stunning and you captured them well!
Steam travel needs a come back. I remember as a kid watching the steamers come & go. Not many though as diesel power was taking over in a big way. This is a gorgeous engine. Thanks for posting.
Great video! Keep it up!
Thank you, I will!
I'm just super happy that this engine is back on the tracks.
Awesome video Mike! I can’t wait to see 2816 in action in a few days as it will be coming to my area! Also hard to believe that the CPKC merger happened on my birthday which is crazy to believe.
Can’t wait to see her In 8 days
FANTASTIC! Thanks for sharing!
Great video on cp train
Thanks!
@@CoasterFan2105 you are welcome
The Canadian Pacific 2816 looks amazing! Imagine the most unique shots you would ever find the internet of this beauty.
Awesome catch of CP 2816!
This will be the first active steam engine I will ever go to see, and I’m super excited!
Fantastic video and footage of our steam locomotive. Enjoyed watching, Jenny and I are getting together with some of my CPKC co workers and going out to see it a few times along this area of the RR next week. Have a wonderful upcoming weekend.(Steve)
Hello Mike, a fantastic video, with a great steam locomotive and two very nice round nose diesel locomotives. Excellently filmed the train and the landscape. Thanks for showing and best regards from Germany.
thank you very much...with all the on-goings garbage in america and the world, this is refreshing and relaxing to see..
Awesome coverage, Mike!
Looks amazing
I have saw Canadian Pacific 2816 in operation at the CPKC’s headquarters in Calgary, Alberta, Canada back in April 24th 2024.
Is This Actually True Or Not🤔
@@MusicTruckMasters2004. It’s true.
@@nathancorcoran5347 Oh Alright Then
@@MusicTruckMasters2004. Yes. Even most of the time displayed at one spot of the headquarters still in steam.
@@nathancorcoran5347
Huh What's Still In Steam
It would be great to see and hear this is person.
Nice Video of the CPKC Steam Train! Great Work Mike.
The pacing shot was perfect. Loved the video.
Phenomenal video!! Wow this is unbelievable that this stream locomotive is going from Canada to Mexico. Incredible shots
Saw it on its tour today in Davenport!
How far are you chasing 2816?
At least as far as Chicago.
I love that train and I love that whistle so much it might be one of my favorite engines!❤
I get to see it in Franklin Park on the 8th of May. I can look at it with a smile on my face knowing that I saw the only 4-6-4 Hudson Locomotive in operation
Great to see the ex Southern Pacific 3/4 dome being used on the excursion. Wonderful video, I can't wait for the whole one to release!
And the auxiliary tender used by SP 4449.
Man I want to film that train! I was going to in Illinois and Davenport but I am still in so much pain that I can't go very far yet. That will be the train of the year.
Another great episode Zac!
Love the chase of this piece of history!
The only operational 4-6-4 Hudson type steam locomotive in the entire western hemisphere as of right now. Very few 4-6-4 Hudson's were saved for preservation. Almost all of them in the Americas had been scrapped.
It has such a long train! Are the parts mkde commonly available than the big boy's?
@marengtech313 they don't run thr big boy hard cause it is expensive to repair parts cause they aren't mass produced. This steam engine is run hard
No parts for any steam engine are commonly available at this point. Big boy also runs pretty fast(60 mph I believe), but this engine would've been designed with faster running in mind, being a passenger engine rather than a heavy haul freight engine. I've heard they ran at 70 mph in test runs.
OOOOOH!
Simply beautiful.
I’m going to Kansas City MO to see this beautiful locomotive in action this will be the second standard gauge steam locomotive I will see the first was big boy 4014 and now I can add CP 2816
Love the frog sound too.
I hope you were able to get video from Franklin Park. Hundreds missed out because of a passenger train blocking the view of the locomotive starting to leave Franklin Park. I 😮
Great video!
Nice vidio bro
Ah man just after I finished watching rocky mountain express...
Nice to see CP 2816 under steam
AWESOME Video
In my opinion the horn is really odd for a steam engine.
The regular whistle they use is a Canadian Pacific 5 chime that's operated by an air valve. It sounds a little different, but many Canadian Pacific locomotives had them in regular service.
@@CoasterFan2105Sadly I can't see it but amazing video on it tho I wish they restored some KCS engines for the OCS as well
Yeah it is not normal but ay it stands out
2816 is the star of Rocky Mountain Express
Nice. The ditch lights on the plow make it look like an English locomotive
Thinking about how many thousands of locomotives like these were all over North America just last century and from the 1800's. Must have been something to travel cross country or regionally by train.
About what time does it leave in the morning to travel? Trying to catch it in the chicago sub after it stops in franklin park
Another round of top quality shots Mike! I'll be flying out to Kansas City in 2 weeks to see her gallop across Missouri. It's so awesome to see the Empress return to operation with such a huge run across North America! 2024 is definitely be a busy year for steam excursions. I can't help but wonder if UP and CPKC will try and coordinate to get the 2816 and 4014 to meet up?
UP hinted at it happening.
Nice coaster
Great video! Question: What is the best way to learn when these events are going to happen? Follow the individual operators? Or is there a good website that lists steam train tours and when they're going to happen? Thank you!
I’m going to see it next week in Davenport! I can’t wait for the video! Also, why does the 2816 have a pedal operated whistle? What’s wrong with its original whistle? I think the original whistle sounds so much better than the pedal operated whistle!
I was wondering what all the fuss was about 2816 lately. Now I know
What happened to the ditch lights? They were on in Canada as far as I’ve seen.
Does anyone know why the whistle doesn’t have a quill to it? It sounds so weird, almost like a horn…
Nice video Mike, also I have a question, will 2816 be visiting Davenport Iowa?
Why are they using a fake whistle instead of the real one?
Aside from that, great video Mike, can’t wait for the longer version & can’t wait to see this unit in person for myself!
It's a real whistle, just a different kind of valve than you usually hear.
The Empress Canadian Pacific 2816 will arrive in Mexico traveling
Monterrey being your first Mexican destination and then you will pass through Saltillo Coahuila and you will also pass through San Luis Potosí and as your final destination you will arrive at Mexico City
Hey Mike since the pacific southwest railway museum is trying to convince CARB to let them run coaster 2103 under it's own power without Repowering it to EPA tier 4 standards could they try adding a blended after treatment system that makes older F40 and F59 types tier 4 compliant while retaining the EMD 645 and 710 engine blocks? Because I've seen an Amtrak piedmont F59PH locomotive with a blended after treatment system that made it tier 4 compliant without a complete Repower of it.
And another thing will the Carl Moyer Grant allow older locomotives to reenter service with their EMD 645 or 710 prime mover if they get the blended after treatment system that makes them tier 4 compliant rather than a complete Repower?
Some speed
Que. Chulada. 🫡🇲🇽
When will the video come out? Also this had better be a full length narrated video.
2816 is named as the empress
I'll be seeing her in Oklahoma!😆
where did you see it
Where is community of may i thought was here?
I would like to see you railfan deval diamond in des plaine Illinois
yes the TrashyKC company exists now and took away the great KCS. As much as i like 2816, considering the reason why it is running, i wish it weren't.
Why no caboose?
Will it come to California?
Why does this train take two diesel locomotives.
ok
cen you make video ebavt southern pacific 4449
Probably 50 mph
@CoasterFan2105 how about a colab?
