Intent to blow means: You have seen a reason to whistle the play dead, but since you are a human, it takes a short time to put the whistle into your mouth and whistle.
Whistle does NOT mean the play is dead there. It means there has already happened something that has killed the play, and whistle is just an indicator for everyone to stop playing. No whistle ever comes exactly when the play is considered dead. There is always a human delay.

    • @k-pm6iy
      @k-pm6iy Před 2 měsíci

@@RoyalMela but here’s why it shouldn’t be ruled that way. Let’s say the whistle is ACTUALLY blown in a situation like that. Even if it turns out to have been an error by the official, you have to say that a goal after that can’t count. That’s because even if it was a blown call, the other team could claim, possibly quite justifiably, that once the whistle blew, they let up.
There can be no such claim in a case where the official hadn’t yet blown the whistle. So in a situation like that, the official’s attitude should be, “Wow, I was going to blow the whistle there but couldn’t do it in time. Thank God for that, because that would’ve been an injustice.”
I realize this is dictated not by the officials but by the league. It’s a terrible policy, and it puts the officials in the awful position of being the bad guys because of a mistake that didn’t actually have to affect the game.

When you're showing hockey footage in the back during these times I feel like I'm supposed to be looking for something and then suddenly visuals are flashing over the video and I feel like I'm missing something important. It's quite distracting. I think limiting this technique or maybe having pictures in background instead of moving video in those circumstances would improve the watching experience a lot!

2019 Stanley Cup Finals Game 5. At the 10:36 mark of the third period, Boston Bruins forward Noel Acciari is tripped from behind by St Louis Blues forward Tyler Bozak, sending Accari to the ice hard, losing the puck in the process. Referee Kelly Sutherland let play continue, as St. Louis's David Perron scored with Acciari still down on the ice to bring the game to 2-0. Perron's goal from O'Reilly and Bozak would prove to be the game winning goal, as the Bruins couldn't complete the comeback. The game 5 final was 2-1, giving the Blues a 3 games to 2 series lead. The Bruins battled back to win game 6 in St. Louis and force game 7, but the Blues ultimately won the series.
Sutherland had a clear view of the trip and chose to let the play continue. With the series going to 7 games, it's reasonable to say that this non-call changed the entire outcome of the finals.

I don’t consider the Preds one a blown call when compared to the others. The refs are told to blow the whistle if they lose sight of the puck. The ref did what they were supposed to, even though the result was unfortunate. There was no missed violation, just an unfortunate early whistle with the correct intention in mind.
All of the other examples were obvious rule violations and/or missed penalties which is the ref not doing what they are supposed to do.
I don’t consider the ref doing what they are supposed to a blown call. I consider the refs not doing what they are supposed to (call a penalty, wave off a goal, call an offsides, etc.) a blown call.

Before 1995, there were blown calls all the time, and I'm not saying that was a good thing. But I don't think it was because of a league wide, front office bias for or against certain teams. There were 24 teams in the NHL and that system, apart from the recession that ultimately took 2 Canadian teams, things were going well, at least from a fan perspective. After 1995, the blown calls seem to be a little more deliberate and frequent.

I mean... most of these didn't actually change the NHL. The Sharks/Blues handpass in 2019 was so bad it actually resulted in changes to the NHL rulebook. And, arguably, resulted in every single call going against the Sharks the rest of the series. It handed the Sharks the game, but in actuality was the end of an era for hockey in San Jose. They haven't won a playoff game since.

Bozak's slew foot on Acciari in the 2019 Stanley Cup finals has to be up there. If the refs get that right (5-minute major + game misconduct), the Bruins bury the Blues in game 5 and go up 3-1. From there, no way the Blues come back.

Are you even sure that the Bruins would have even scored had they been handed a penalty on that play with how good the Blues defense was that year. It was a 1-1 game at that point in the game and the only time the Blues looked worse than the opposition in the 2019 playoffs is when they were trailing. I highly doubt a single penalty would have made the Blues defense fall apart for the rest of the series. Also the series was tied 2-2 prior to game 5. I don’t know how you got the Bruins up 3-1 in the series as potential result from game 5, but I guess math isn’t everybody’s strong suit.

Yes, it was unfortunate and terrible, and yes the Predators got screwed out of a goal, but the referee simply did as instructed, and blew the play dead when he lost sight of the puck. Grew up playing hockey in upstate New York in the 90s; the Sabres were everything to me and most kids I played with. And while that sucked I think what's been really killing us is that players don't want to live in Buffalo. Despite being just across the border from Canada we're still a US city and hockey is not our national sport. Through in the water problems, lack of jobs, and everything else Buffalo has been unable to attract new talent and has been going through a rebuild now for well over a decade. So for my own mental health (particularly when the Eichel era came upon us) I traded my Sabres cap for a Rangers one. I still cheer for Buffalo - I think we are one of the best sports communities of all time - but so long as problems continue in that city we're going to be an underdog team. If Buffalo were to face the New York Rangers in the playoffs I would probably cheer for Buffalo, but I wouldn't be holding my breath.

The 2004 Stanley Cup was NOT a goal. The puck was a few inches off the ice and the shadow was not depicted in this replay. If the shadow was visible, it would have been about halfway over the goal line and therefore not a goal. Recreations prove this. Just stop the video at 4:23 and mentally draw a shadow downward about 2 inches from the puck and you will see the shadow on top of the red line.

Everyone including most of the blues stopped playing becuase it was such an obvious egregious trip
But the game didn’t stop, free goal, blues win. Boston wins game 6, which should have been the 4th win if the call hadn’t been blown.
Game 7 they then blow it so profoundly as to make me wonder why the stopped caring? Also Brad Marchands amazing desicion to head to the bench and leave petrangelo in defended with 7 seconds left in game he period

How are you certain the Bruins would have won Game 5 if a penalty was called as it was a tie game at 1-1. The only time the 2019 Blues defense would collapse in the 2019 playoffs was when they were trailing. It would have been a 50/50 crapshoot as to who would have won game 5 if a penalty was called on the play. I forgot who scored the Blues goal on that play, but everyone on the Bruins stopped playing despite the lack of a whistle resulting in a grade A chance that gave the Blues the lead and had the Bruins kept playing I highly doubt the Blues score on that sequence. Which is the reason why you always play to the whistle.
