I remember this being played on duke boxes in the pubs around Reigate and Redhill. It was always around chucking out time it would start playing, if not ealier in the evening. By that time, everyone was drunk enough to sing a long, clap to it and drive the landlords mad. Those were the days, many thanks for posting :-)
I loved the original and I loved this great version by dc5. I remember watching this on top of the pops as a young kid and the next day at school everyone was singing it. The song a great effect then and still rings true today. The counterculture forever.
@@QueenFan12 This was NOT their last recording. Even after the group broke up in 1970, Dave still had 2 more years on his recording contract. So he got Mike Smith to record for those 2 years while the rest of the group went their own way. One more thing. In case you failed to notice some of the video was in black & white while others were in color. That's because the b&w was for TV (Top of the Pops or something like that). The color section were added AFTER the group broke up and Clark went to acting school. Those people singing, including Peter Davidson, were members of the acting class he was taking. One more thing - why don't you learn a little about the band before shooting your ignorant mouth off. Yes Dave DID go out with a hit record. He was the group's drummer AND their manager AND their record producer. The 4 others were his EMPLOYEES and were paid a salary. Clark had already made a fortune and wanted to do something different, so he broke up the group and went into acting.
much more soul in DC5 version...love it. As far as him maturing into a "difficult person"....I never wore his shoes. Being.that famous, rich and young isn't for everyone .

Song written in the early 1960s by American singer-songwriter Chet Powers (aka Dino Valenti) most famously a part of Quicksilver Messenger Service. In USA The Youngbloods cover version topped this very good cover.
Thank you! I've always wondered who's textured voice that was who sang harmony on so many DC5 songs, especially since finding a live recording anywhere is futile. Was surprised to see it was Dave. Now that I see that it's Lenny, it all makes sense.
Tom Inter Lenny is often the voice you hear backing that booming voice of Mike.If you listen closely to “Because “ Lenny’s voice is sort of softening Mike’s vocals. They really knew how to get the sound just right! 🎶 🎶
I was born in 1962, so was just a little kid during the 60s when all that peace & love stuff was going on. By the time I was old enough to know anything, all the peace & love was gone and all we had left was inflation. It never does last, does it? There's something about this video that reminds me of Jim Jones & the People's Temple. Like I said, the peace & love never does last.
RRaquello "He who binds himself to a joyDoth that winged life destroy But he who kisses the joy as it flies Lives in eternities sunrise" - William Blake, Songs of Innocence
James Mason Wow! Spectacular quote James. I've read and re-read it about 10 times and each passing gives a fresh insight and "Aha!" moment. Thanks so much for sharing.
Deloris Troy was the black woman singing and went on having hits of her own. Peter Davison, who went on to play Dr. Who, was a friend of Dave Clark and was in this video.
What a great stage invasion - akin to Hey Jude on The David Frost Show. The song was originally by The Youngbloods.'Put a little love in your heart' even gets a mention, another song the Dave Clark Five covered.Even the record sleeve was a cover.Great gospel shouting by Madeline Bell from Blue Mink.Spot Peter Davidson in the audience.this song spent 8 weeks in the UK charts, peaking at 8 in March and April 1970,their last major hit. Here comes Summer peaked at 44,More Good old rock'n'roll (a medley) peaked at 34 and a reissue of Glad all over peaked at 37 years later,in 1993.
The song was not originally by the Youngbloods, but by Dino Valenti, whose real name was Chet Powers and he wrote the song. The Youngbloods and Jefferson Airplane both recorded versions around the same time (1966). The Youngbloods version eventually reached the top 10 in the USA in 1969.
"In March 1970, the Dave Clark Five reached number 8 on the UK Singles Chart with their version retitled 'Everybody Get Together'." Sometimes that happens, a song or a movie gets a different title so more people can recognize it. All the songs we have today that have the same one-word title as any other song should probably take notes.
I think that there are a few factors in why The Dave Clark Five isn't looked at in the same vein as The Beatles. While both band's started out as near equals in popularity, The Beatles were the eventual winners because of them quickly evolving with the times and embracing the psychedelic sounds and concept albums of the time. They also had outside management and financial advisors. The DC5 on the other hand rode the "British Invasion" train longer than their Liverpool counterparts. Their name also hampered any later development. While "The Beatles" name could adapt to any era, "The Dave Clark Five " was named after a person, who wasn't even the vocalist. Still, this song shows that the band could change with the times and could show the youth a more mature sound, just in a different direction than their one-time rivals. Sadly, Dave Clark himself own all rights to the music and refused to allow it to be released for decades causing many fans to overlook them and potential new fans to not know who may have never heard of the band. Also, the clear breakout member of the band was singer Mike Smith, regardless of who's name is on the front of the bass drum.
This may be the best cover of this song. The band gives it a very different feel with much more energy than the original, yet it still has that 60's sense. (I would be happy to hear about a cover you think is better.)
I remember watching this on top of the pops as a ten year old and it had a great effect on me then and still does. As a child of the sixties I still believe in the dream. Peace and love to all. Dc5 great band.
Bit of Hey Jude, Lola by the Kinks and Give Peace A Chance by John Lennon about this and the long drawn out coda style. Decent enough. This was their final single.
I wonder if Nirvana had to pay royalties for Kurt Cobain screeching the chorus to this song on the intro to one of their songs on the Nevermind album (Territorial Pissings?)
Sort of an attempt at a cross between the Beatles world televised All You Need Is Love and their long Hey Jude drawn out ending? The Youngbloods did this much better.
much more soul in DC5 version...love it. As far as him maturing into a "difficult person"....I never wore his shoes. Being.that famous, rich and young isn't for everyone .
One of the best songs of the era in America. Thank you, UK.
This is one of the best song I ever heard . I Play this song everyday since decades . That's no joke . I like this Melody !!
Great version! Made it up to #8 in the UK in 1970!
Mike Smiths great voice was never let to its full potential just one of his growls makes me smile hope he's making people smile in Heaven,

Wow!! What a wonderful group.. What a bunch of wonderful singers!!!
This song captures the 60's. I like what the DC5 did with that bass line.
A million thanks for posting this version.
Mike Smith what a voice, R.I.P
We shouldn't label Mike to 'Rest' In Peace' but to have him ' Rejoice' In Peace.
@@Drummed well said
The band really should have been called "The Mike Smith 5" as he was the real star of the band!
heavenly voice now singing in heaven ..a true great
One of the very best anthems
Oh, and in case you didn't know, this song went on to be an #2 hit for the DC5 in Europe

Mike smith had the iconic voice of the 60s. Dave Clark Five would have been a no go without him.

LYRICS:
Love is but a song to sing
Fear's the way we die
You can make the mountains ring
Or make the angels cry
Though the bird is on the wing
And you may not know why
REFRAIN: Come on people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another
Right now
Some may come and some may go
We shall surely pass
When the one that left us here
Returns for us at last
We are but a moment's sunlight
Fading in the grass
REFRAIN
If you hear the song I sing
You will understand (listen!)
You hold the key to love and fear
All in your trembling hand
Just one key unlocks them both
It's there at your command
REFRAIN
We need this song RIGHT NOW

Dave Clark one of the top 5 drummers in Rock, my humble opinion
One of the heaviest drummers ever. Definitely top 5.
A definite inspiration to many who followed.
Ha ha you cannot be serious! He never played on the recordings!
Had forgotten how good this is. Presumably recorded as their answer to All You Need Is Love.
This song exudes love.
Dave has himself harmonizing with Mike at the 1:23 mark but it's actually Lenny Davidson on the recording.

There is footage ive seen of Lenny harmonizing with Mike during 1:23
