  • This installments covers several; subjects. It tells how the "legend" misrepresents the number of stills Buford shut down, Dwana's claims in USA Today that Buford had to fight not only the state line mob but the Dixie Mafia as well as the "Detroit Mob." It also explains why moonshining was so prevalent, how it is made, the taxes required on the product and much more.

I used to live in Jackson, TN which is pretty near McNairy County. My regular dental hygienist was out, and another lady cleaned my teeth one time. She was from McNairy county. I asked if she knew anything about Buford Pusser. She talked the entire time about him and how inaccurate the movies were. She said he was crooked and took payoffs, among other things. Idk what to believe, but still enjoy reading and learning about him.

    Hello Mike,
I just recently started watching your series and find it very informative and interesting. Of course I saw the "Walking Tall" series back in the 1970s, but didn't really become interested in the topic until I moved to Corinth Mississippi in Feb.1981. Actually I was married at the Baptist Church on route 45 just before the Tennessee state line. Both of our daughters were born at Magnolia Hospital on rt.72 in Corinth. So I naturally became interested in Buford & co. At that time the Shamrock Motel building and sign was still intact; The office was used as a package store selling beer as beer was illegal in Alcorn county at the time. There was a Shell gas station across the highway and bar/"club" looking building. Was that originally the "White Iris"? A buddy of mine I worked, fished, hunted, with took me out to the New Hope Church and ambush site. Anyway, I am only on episode 14 now and am looking forward to watching more. Yes, I'll be ordering your book as well. Thank You! Jeff

@@bufordpusser1122 I think the truth is somewhere in between. Small towns can be like that for sure. In my hometown in Mississippi, the sheriff is the richest guy in town. How do I know? Because my brother married his daughter. County is dry but every Friday and Saturday there was a party at our country club including doctors lawyers police chief, judges, rich farmers, and most bussiness owners. Almost every house I've been in had a stocked bar and moonshine. His first year he busted more stills than any other sheriff in the history of Tennessee. I think his story has been embellished a bit. Here is one thing, if he was such a great lawman how the heck did he not get relected for sheriff ? I'll tell you why, because the residents lost most of their cheap and wanted moonshine. It's crazy to put law enforcement in jeopardy of great bodily harm for federal tax not collected. It always good to hear both sides of every story. Neal

Mike does not clearly distinguish that the disparity between the reported facts and the events as depicted in the movie really belongs at the door of Bing Crosby Productions and not with Buford as he implies.
Yes BCP changed and distorted many of the events in Buford's life as Hollywood normally does in the movies that claim to be based on people's lives.
We all know that Buford was not perfect and may have bent a few rules along the way, but if Mike wants others to believe "The other story" then credibility would dictate that he provides facts and information of the things that Buford did right and I do not remember such citings.
Buford was elected to office 3 times and there was a limit of three consecutive terms, and if Buford was the type of man the M.E. describes, I seriously doubt that he would have held that office as long as he did.

Buford Claimed Walking Tall was 85 to 90% accurate. Buford took what the movie told about him and ran with it as if it were true..., it wasn't. Bent a few rules? Who is being disingenuous here? Buford was a corrupt Sheriff who demanded payoffs for people to be allowed to operate their beer joints, clubs, make moonshine and bootleg. Sure, Pusser did some good things, every sheriff has to if they want to get re-elected, however, Buford made sure the Public knew of his good deeds while hiding his corruption. Back then there was no social media, no internet, no cell phones. He could control the local media. My question is why don't you know of all the corrupt things he did? I'll wait....

Sheriff Pusser was voted out of office in 1969 I believe. Citizens must of voted him out for some reason. I don't know. I read a book about the corruption in that area had been around for years prior to 1964 when Mr. Pusser was elected Sheriff. Mississippi Governor during the 1950s sent the State Police in to raid the places after AAA travel advisories we're warning travelers of driving South from Chicago to vacation. After the gambling establishments were closed they rebuilt new ones on top of the state line making it hard for State and County jurisdictions to prosecute. Also by building on the state line they could avoid being denied building permits in Mississippi by getting them approved in Tennessee.

Buford was forced out by term limits as then, a Tennessee Sheriff could only serve three consecutive two year terms. He had to leave office in 1970. He ran again 1972 after setting out a term but the citizens of McNairy County refused to re-elect him. His opponent, Clifford Coleman, won by asking voters, if your son or daughter were to be arrested tonight, who would you want to do it, me or Buford? That says volumes.
