  • The first GPU that is sold out this year is the RX 7800 XT. I dive into the numbers to find out how this GPU sold out while every other launch this year was a flop. As a 1440p GPU, is this the GPU of the year! Should you consider buying? What is AMD's winning strategy?

    I got a 7800 XT. I didn’t need an upgrade from my 6800 but I sold it for a good price. It’s a nice performance upgrade and it’s much cooler and quieter than my old card. Plus it came with Starfield which I was going to buy anyway. So I feel pretty good about it.

      This is precisely how I ended up with a 7900XT. Someone gave me good money for my 6800XT. I got Last of Us Part 1 and the 7900XT was $100 off already so I ended up, game price taken into account, paying in the range of $750 USD. I think maybe less than $200 out of pocket after all was said and done. Could not be happier.

      Same reason I am switching from my 1070ti to a 7800xt after 7 years. I also don't see Nvidia changing anytime soon since AI is more profitable, which means they don't have any reason to care. meanwhile amd makes the cpu and gpu for Xbox and PlayStation so they really have a much greater incentive towards actually caring about gamers.

      The market share of the RTX 4090 is BIGGER than the market share of the _entire Radeon 7000 series combined_ on the Steam HW survey. The best selling RDNA2 product, the RX 6700 XT, which had been constantly been sold as the "best value GPU" for over 2 years now is already behind the RTX 4070 by a few percentage points. NVIDIA doesn't need to limit the supply, the demand is actually there man. If you want a real surprise just look at the install base of 3060s and 3070s on the Steam hardware survey, both GPUs surpass ALL RDNA2 products COMBINED.

    I wanted to play starfield at 4K 60 fps, for that I only had 2 choices the 4090 or 7900 xtx. I went with the 7900 XTX (my first ever AMD GPU) and I've been pc gaming since 2001. Luckily my 7900 xtx was an open box item and I was able to get it for "only" $839 which is better than the 1K msrp (and much less than a $1700 4090) but its still the most I've ever spent for a GPU. In the past I usually upgraded my GPU when nvidias last gen flagship cards got down to $500 used.

    Your analysis sounds pretty spot on. I picked up the Reference RX 7800 XT from AMD a few minutes after launch. I had previously tested an RX 6800 XT and moved onto an NVIDIA card so I was happy to jump back in the better value of an AMD card over an RTX 40 series card with $100-$200 markup. • @ImaMac-PC
      @ImaMac-PC  Před 9 měsíci

      Sales shown are not cumulative. They have a complex algorithm to determine position. Thus, the low position points to weak volume.

    came here to thank you for amazing content. i love how unbiased you are unlike popular tech review channels. all they do is repeat the same boring nonsense instead of actually scratching below the surface and luckily, you do.
    edit: these are good cards but very confusing labeling for some reason, seems like they are learning from nvidia... on a side note, I'd love to see the full ad102 silicone in action! hopefully nvidia releases the 4090ti (because there is not much point atm since amd literally has nothing to compete with the 4090 so nvidia would just be competing with themselves...)
    edit2: I just don't understand what's with mainstream tech reviewers and dickriding amd to the point you'd think nvidia is releasing gtx 280s for $2000 when they aren't. ada lovelace is amazing from a technical standpoint, too bad their pricing isn't. Honestly I don't think we will see a similar generational uplift in a very long time (mainly talking about 4090 vs 3090 as every other gpu is labelled wrongly)

    What Jensen says is technically true as it's something I've said long before him. A console only fills 2 purposes, gaming and and very secondary media consumption. A PC is a vastly more multipurpose device, and everyone needs a computer to some extent any way. You primarily only need a GPU to play games in said PC.

      Pssst... not so much "turning the tide" but slowly gaining INSTALLED BASE marketshare perhaps? Steam hardware survey report MARCH 2023 (AMD 14.2% vs nVidia 77.1%) - AUGUST 2023 (AMD 16% vs nVidia 75%). Baby steps but in the right direction. Should be interresting to watch another year. AMD for the last few years has held 14% to 15% Installed base. They mostly focus on their bread and butter markets of CPU, Motherboards chipsets, Server space and Consoles. In 2022, the company reported revenue of $23.6 billion, gross margin of 45%. AMD is a beast of a company and slowly turning their eyes more towards the GPU market. It is a small piece of the pie for them. nVidia is diversifying as a move to ensure AMD does not RYZEN them with GPU's like they did Intel's CPU division. You ask me 6 years ago if AMD could threaten Intel? I would have laughed in your face. nvidia is not stupid and they are aware of what COULD be.

    In my region, RX 7800 XT is not sold out, but it is at rock bottom price. It sells from 522 euros at the moment. That is price with tax. That is strange because usually AMD products are not competitive in my region to the point Nvidia competes with them on value. Though, that page doesn't open at the moment, next lowest is at 542 euros which is still good.
    In this particular case, AMD really finally made a GPU which is both cheaper and performs better than its Nvidia competitor - RTX 4070. Usually I would expect AMD to do AMD things and to price this GPU over 600 euros in my region, placing it as a more expensive option to RTX 4070 while performing slightly better. A strategy which would make them redundant as people would go for more premium brand if they offer the same value.

    2:50, I assume the Best Selling GPU list is the best selling over an unspecified time period, so it makes sense that a GPU that just released would be near the bottom.
    Think about it: Why would a 6800 XT be in the top 10 and the 7800 XT be in the 70's if the latter has the same if not better price to performance?
    There's also far fewer 6800 XT models available today than 7800 XT, so it seems even more implausible to guage launch sales from the list.
    As for undersupply, according to MindfactoryDE, the 7800 XT is the best selling card this past week. They're pro-AMD but it sold more than all other AMD cards as well. So unless Mindfactory got disproportionately more supply than normal.
    Also, the 7700 XT and 7800 XT cost nearly the same to make, are made of nearly identical parts, but sell for 50+ dollars apart. So limiting the supply of 7800 XT's to sell more 7700 XT's that make them less money simply makes no sense. It'd be like a car dealer limiting supply of the top trims to sell the base one they make way less on.
    Imo, the 4060 TI's pathetic-ness and need/ability to sell N21/22 let the N32 price floor be 450, but the 4070 at 600 set the ceiling at 500. That's a super narrow range, but they still needed 2 SKU's due to yields being good but imperfect and branding.
    So they prioritize the 7800 XT and the 7700 XT is mostly made from defective GPU dies that would otherwise go in the bin. Since the 7700 XT has far less supply, it can be given a higher price (as the "correct" price based on price:performance would lead to it selling out faster than 7800 XT due to lack of supply and higher market volume at 400 than 500).
    The 7900 XT is a strange situation since AMD made it in a larger supply, yet priced it less competitively. My guess is that since it was up in the air whether the renamed 4080 12GB would get a price drop, AMD matched its original price and would just reduce it if the renamed 4080 12GB launches for less.
    I think if AMD knew the 4070 TI would launch just 3 weeks after them for 800, they would've made the 7900 XT 800. They were caught in a bind since it looks bad to cut the price just weeks after launch, so they took the L in that moment and just gradually lowered the price over a few months.

    • @ImaMac-PC
      @ImaMac-PC  Před 9 měsíci

      It is interesting that at Mindfactory, the 7800xt outsold the 7700xt almost 12:1. The pricing on the 7700xt is inherently wrong and they should have learned that from the 7900xt launch. It does not matter how NVIDIA is going to price any of its GPUs when the price within their own stack does not make any sense. Why would AMD price the second product wrong twice in a row?

  • @allxtend4005
    @allxtend4005 Před 7 měsíci

    so logic, how can you outsell a product by number when the product you want to outsell is longer on the market ? this will not happen just any days after the release.
    You need months that for.
    the Rx 7800xt is outselling the RTX 4070TI for sure because the RTX 4070TI cost WAY more money and eat more watt and deliver equal performance.

    I usually love your analysis and videos, but not this one. The presumption that scalpers will gobble up any in-demand product is false. Scalpers will only do that in a PRICE INSENSITIVE market like we had in the pandemic. The current market has both AMD and NVidia struggling to sell at MSRP (hence the game bundle promotions, coupons and price cuts) - there is no room for scalpers to play. Also, doesn't it take time for sell through for a new GPU to climb up sales charts?
    Also we're almost a year into RDNA3, do you really expect a card that matches previous gen in price/performance (if compared to the 6800XT) with a few niche features like AV1 to be a blockbuster? I think based on your own analysis we'd expect it to be a sales success, but not a blockbuster which is exactly what you're seeing. The 7800XT is the least worst current gen 1440p GPU that still gives you reasonable 1440p hi refresh performance (unlike the 4060Ti) - that's both a good and a bad thing and that's that.
    I do agree with one thing you've said - AMD's winning formula is not insulting gamers and flipping of Jensen setting the 'transaction price' for 1440p. There is also another part to the formula, that is to make console first games more performant on AMD GPUs or at least easier to optimize for AMD cards.

      Thank you for your thoughtful feedback. I actually didn't have any presumptions on scalpers behavior on the 7800xt. I just want to see if the scalpers influenced the selling out of the 7800xt. Amd has so many companies they are trying to feed their technology too and demand that going with smaller nm made no sense. They tried chiplet design and it might have no worked out. It will get better it's similar to ryzen when it came out. It added more cores, but the speed was just good enough for people to go sure I will get one. Price was decent too and now fast forward they are neck and neck with intel. Seeing that 8000 will beat 14 gen intel. It's always amd beating them one year and intel the next. Is a more than 50% improvement in performance per dollar only a modest improvement from one generation to the next?
    Inflation has been higher than normal in the last three years, and that's at least mostly not AMD's fault. The dollar isn't worth as much as it used to be, like it or not.
    People are also comparing pricing of the new cards to the current and heavily discounted prices of the previous gen 6000 series, not realizing that those cards are only priced that way so that they can remain competitive with the new generation cards (such as the RTX 4070 which already released a few months ago).
    The 6800 XT was 650 USD when it launched in 2020, which is equivalent to about 770 USD today, so the 7800 XT is more than 33% cheaper, with about the same performance, and that's more than a 50% improvement in performance per dollar.
    However, it's arguably more appropriate to compare the 7800 XT to the 6700 XT, or to whatever the best value cards of the previous generation were. The 6700 XT launched at 480 USD in early 2021, and that's equivalent to about 540 USD today. The 7800 XT is 43% faster, has 33% more Vram, a lot more memory bandwidth, the quality of the coolers seems to be better on most models, and there are also some additional benefits of the new architecture, and for a LOWER price if you adjust for inflation. However, the 6700 XT was probably originally planned to launch at a lower price than that, likely very close to 430, which is equivalent to about 485 USD today.
    500 USD today is equivalent to about 420 USD in 2019, when the 5700 XT first launched at 400 USD, and was widely praised as offering very good value at the time. The 7800 XT is about 90% faster, and has double the Vram.
    Progress in value is definitely still happening. The rate of progress is definitely slowing, and we should definitely be as critical as possible toward these companies, their products, and their pricing, but, if you want to make an argument that the price of a product is too high, you have to use accurate information and sound arguments.
    It also sucks that average incomes haven't kept pace with inflation, and I think we can give some portion of blame to AMD for their role in that, but it's primarily not their fault, not unless Lisa Su is even more of a mad genius than we already know she is, and she's somehow secretly controlling the global economy XD XD XD

      Thanks for the comment. I do have a question on inflation. It's always used to explain the high prices of every thing including GPUs. However, what if you use your inflation calculator on another computer part. In Nov-2020 AMD launched the 5950x for $799. Also, Intel had the i9-10900k for about $500 by Nov-2020. If you put those two prices into your inflation calculator, what would they both be equivalent to in today's dollars?

    the 7800 and 7700 have the same chip i think and even Scott Herkelman said that the stock will vary at launch and that the AIBs have the liberty to "inovate with the skus". For me the launch was just a test to see how many of these chips will end up as 7800 and how many will end up as 7700. the rumor is that they have been hording these chips since January waiting for nVidia to finish putting out their line-up to see if they can ask more money for these or not. The price for the 7800 is ok, could be lower i guess a bit maybe but still i don`t feal like i`m getting ripped off paying the money for it but the 7700 looks like a rip off and these gpus are going to be fare and between till they bin some more navi 32 chips and ldecide to lower the price on it. great job as always mate with the analysis

    RX 7800 XT is a good card, but it's stagnation. Offering RX 6800 XT-class performance at $150 lower MSRP is decent. Unfortunately, 6800 XT is starting at $500 vs. 7800 XTs sells from $500 to $560. Price-to-performance is meh. AMD is undercutting NVIDIA RTX 4070 by $100, which is similar to RDNA I pricing strategy. AMD and their AIBs have been stockpiling of Navi 32 cards while they wait for RDNA II cards to sell out for months, and I wonder if they can maintain their sales of the new cards to keep prices stable. I doubt NVIDIA will let this slide without a reply, and NVIDIA might respond by the Christmas 2023 with game bundles, price cuts, and/or SUPER refresh.

      It's a very underwhelming product. At 500 dollars it's still better to get NVIDIA for the vastly superior features and software compatibility. There is no single metric where the Radeon brings anything unique, better or significantly ahead of the GeForce products in all honesty. This is the problem with Radeon's entire product line, nobody wants it.

      Well I have a 4070, but honestly AMD kinda did destroy nVidias offerings. If I was buying now I'd be a fool to buy a 4070. Unfortunately at the time when I bought the 4070, it came with Diablo 4 (I think that was the main reason I bought it, the offer was gonna run out in a couple of weeks) and the model I bought had a small discount (only 5%). At the time there were also rumors that AMD might not even release a 7800xt. Unfortunately in nearly all the recently released games the 7800xt absolutely annihilates the 4070. Usually it's roughly 20% faster in new games and in Starfield I think it's more than 40% faster. While costing $100 less... feels I got "scammed" again, my previous GPU was an RTX 2080,... yeah that one sucked too. The 4070 does better in older games, but in recent releases... I donno it just sucks for some reason.

    3rd degree price 7800XT at $499 sold out, GPU of the year? AMD sold most of them first week into SI pre-builts (similar 4060 8 GB at launch) and for AMD plus SI 2nd degree Starfield bundle cost hit. I thought $499 was a regulating price cap but on day 1 sold out its 3rd degree consumer discriminatory price pulling specific volume of consumer (run down) supply ahead into producer's ramp to set $499 as run end price. So back to the same old. Channel is selling 7800XT for $569 to $599 indicating channel disliked the 3rd degree pricing and similar 7700XT at $449 which is truly a first degree price AMD wants the channel to find the right price for 7700XT and channel also priced up 7800XT to 1st degree application competitive price. Into q4 and through q1 AMD and the channel, Nvidia and even Intel except for Meteor mobile are on a supply elastic price drive to clear out inventory. There are 10 M N31/32 to clear before the q4 fab production refresh for onto 2024. mb

    The problem with your theory is this:
    1) Hardware Unboxed talked with AMD representatives and they appeared clueless in regards to what they were doing - marketing. They seemed to be unaware of their own GPU's performance.
    2) Enthusiasts are not buying AMD GPUs. They are buying the best and that is Nvidia.
    3) Normal people do not care about such tactics. They buy a GPU when they need it. They have no clue of what is happening in GPU market outside the time when they need new GPU.
    4) Normal people buy in low to mid range. They rarely go into enthusiast-grade GPUs.

      I saw that Hardware Unboxed video. AMD reps can claim to be clueless... the first time. They have had 9 months to get all the feedback from the community. @@ImaMac-PC Occam's razor. Do not attribute something to malice which just as well could be explained by the incompetence.
      Retail business does not work like that. These are physical products which take up space. Third party sellers quickly get anxious for having product stick on shelves. All for dubious benefit of forcing people to buy a card which they do not want.
      Furthermore, GPU manufacturer does not benefit if stock is low. They sell to a retailer. Retailer then adds premium. If GPU is sold at a premium, retailers and then GPU manufacturers like MSI are first in line to get that extra premium.
