For anyone reading this: I know that dog training can be difficult sometimes, but you're doing great. Keep up the good work, and your dog (and your own sanity) will thank you for it! ❤️💕
Today I was practicing sitting with distractions (food being the distraction) I was wearing socks on the hardwood floor and ended up slipping and falling. While I was down my dog decided it was a good time to break sit and go grab the food haha. Dogs certainly are opportunists.
As much as I wish I had sent my dog to Brandon for training before bringing him home czcams.com/users/postUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU I am so grateful for this down-to-earth, practical guide. His training techniques and tips really work. Thank you as well for dedicating your life's work to rescue dogs, and to rescuing those of us who want the very best for our 4-legged family members.
Your videos are so helpful! I know dog training isn't always a step by step process and you need to adapt to certain situations, but it's really useful to have a basic guideline to fall back on if you get stuck.
This is exactly the kind of sit-stay training video I was looking for. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks!
Oh same profile my friend
@@moonpie3240 Good choice 👍
Thank you for the idea! I've been struggling with the stay, and the solutions that have been proposed to me really don't work well in my mind (therefore, not with my applying it to the dog). This is such an easy and sensible way to do the stay. I'm so going to try it!
This was really helpful! Need to do this with my pup :)
Been waiting for this a long time. Clients seem to want a sit stay. I'm in favour of teaching a down stay as dog is less likely to get up (unless they want to do competition or similar) Teaching the 3 positions first seems difficult for them so this short cut is great. They are always reluctant to loose the lure lol. Also the bit about not moving when giving release, I'll be watching out for that. thank you.
Your videos never get old.. I thank you so much for taking time to still make videos for your channel.
I love your hair!! The video was very helpful. Adorable dog.
I found your way to teach a dog "stay" totally working on my bichon, who is usually ranked pretty low on Dog's Intelligence!! Thanks!
As always a peasure to watch your videos! Good to have the reminder of being unpredictable, and not always asking for more.
great video! thank you
So I used a very similar method to teach my dog of my own thought thank you for this video so I can share with friends.
LOVE your videos! Keep it up! I like that you showed variety. I often forget that the goal isn't just to make it constantly harder with my dog. Variety is just as powerful! :)
Thanks for your videos!!! Super helpful and easy to follow! I have been using your videos to train a stray pitbull my husband and I found to make him more adoptable ❤
Awe thats awesome! thank you for doing what you do!
Hi Emily. Glad to see you specifically speak about a release cue. Sometimes my KelpieX girl has trouble to relax properly without a specific release. Cheers to you and yours.
Thank you for this short version. Very essential information. Thank you.
Definitely, the easiest, fastest and most reliable way! Thanks.
Thanks Emily! You're the best!
Your dog is so beautiful and well behaved! I hope mine turns out like this haha
Excellent point on keeping your dog guessing and not knowing how long the stay is to just sit and enjoy. I never gave that a thought in that manner, great job!
Thank you!
I envy you so much for your home! It looks lovely there!
thank you. Found it very useful.
I have a teenager who has forgotten all her commands were taught with implied stays. Decided to look at this video to see if there is anything I can do to help clarify things for her! Definitely going to try this with an elevated surface for clarity!
great video, great idea and easy to implement, many thanks
You deserve a million subscribers. You and Victoria Stillwell are my favorite dog trainers 💖💖
This is brilliant! Thanks!
I love how you make it so clear thank you for that, also I have a French bulldog mix and I can't get him to sit, and I don't want to have to force him to sit what should I do??
Great video! We are practicing sit and stay right now. I was also wondering if you have any videos on how I can train my dog to sit by my side when called, and how to encourage her to sit closer to me and facing the same way as me? We would like to learn that next. We have been watching you videos for a few years now and learn so much. Thank you!
Awesome!
Thanks for making awesome training videos. Your videos are very informative and easy to understand. Thanks for breaking the training in small steps with good tips. I am going to train my dog 'Proof' sit.

Such a great video!! Thank you!! This is what I have been looking for, I am going to try it with my pup and then i cant wait to watch more videos from you. :)
Good tips!! Thanks
Great video! Brisk, descriptive & very understandable! Thanks
I officially want to say, I love your videos!
Thank you! What a great human-training lesson. If you can train people, dogs are easy.
Found your video at a good time. We just adopted a 10mo husky who watches how I lock and unlock the front door.
Huskies are such intelligent dogs!
You're good - very good. Excellent video.
thanks!
your doggy is so well trained
It worked
Thx!!
thx this is really cool
Awesome video by an awesome trainer!!
New dog owner with a new pup. Can't stand the other video's where they talk to the dogs like they are babies. Your video's are straight to the point with good info. Thank you.
very good to a first time dog owner/trainer
Could you do a video on how to end training sessions? That would be super useful!!
awesome!! your dog is soooo smart..
OMG your alive!! Haven't seen any new videos for ages. Splash is gorgeous as always.
Thank you coach ♥️
I like your videos. and thanks for giving suggestion
Good video...learned a lot....
I will try this out in our next training session.
thank you so much for your tutorials; they are awesome
Don't. It will not work and is not reliable.
So far for 15 years of my training career it's been reliable. The reason it did not work for you is because you weren't using reinforcers. You have to condition the reinforcers as you would condition punishers. If food you use is not a reinforcer the training does not work which is what you experienced. In that situation you have to switch reinforcers or work on conditioning the ones you use to be stronger.
good luck
@@kikopup you dont know what you're talking about. Never said I used your method because I'm not stupid. Never will I ever use food to train a dog. I dont need your luck I have skill and experience. As well as proper methods that work for anyone
@@albertacosta657 If you can't say something positive, can you move on?
Splash you are so good!
Great videos! I love how you account for all of the possibilities that can possibly occur during training, as less experienced folks (like myself) often substitute incorrect training to supplement what we don't know.
Good job!
Thanks Madde!
What a gorgeous yard!! Sweet, and I need a clicker!!!
SIMPLY. AMAZING.
Thanks!
This is great, thanks :)
Thank you! I am just starting to train my pup stay. I was wondering when to click during the process, I see you click more or less right before you return to offer a treat. I was worried that this might cause my pup to get up to come fetch the treat, but it seems to not be the case.
I do dog agility and your system could help my LURCHER stay on the line, and lower my stress levels :)
Can you please do some trick tutorials? I love your videos
Subscribed, thank you :)
Awesome
nice to see a new video from u! :)
You are great ! Thanks and thanks again ! But one question : what kind of treat do you use ?
Emily's book was really helpful when I got my puppy! It was an easy purchase and I'm a poor student. hahaha
oooo I never thought of that! haha thanks! :)
Your videos are stellar! I have been devouring them, reviewing them over and over. I am on a wait list to get my puppy. (It’s been 12 years since my last dog passed away. He was super! I am now retired and can be home again to spend more time with a dog), so I’m preparing myself and our home for welcoming and living with our prospective canine family member. I can’t wait to implement your methods of training! You demonstrate so very well the superior approach (positive reinforcement) for training dogs, explaining the reasoning and getting results that make dogs and their owners happy. I have a question about the “Release” or “Free” cue. When released from stays in your other videos (that I have seen so far) and in this one, the attention of the dogs is still on you; they break their stays and they come close to you. Does your use of“Release” or “Free” mean they can break whatever stay position they are in wherever they are ( in a car, on the sofa, in a crate) in order to come to you, or is that just what they choose to do? When I had my other dogs, to release from a stay, I would always say their name and then give a cue, like ”Come,” or “Heel,” or whatever. “OK” for them meant they were released to do whatever they wanted (within reason), like run and play, or eat the treat. So I had more than one cue to release them from a stay position which was in and of itself was cued as “Stay” (after cuing down or sit). Did I make keeping a reliable position stay more confusing to my dogs by cuing stay (after giving the position cue), come, heel, etc.? Over my life I’ve just had well-mannered dogs (Norwegian Elkhound, Labrador, Rottweiler, and Standard Poodle) in my home in the past; I had never asked them for a prolonged stay (for one thing, I didn’t know how to teach it; also, their behavior was pretty mellow anyway). With my prospective puppy, who will be an Aussiedoodle, I would like to do obedience trials or perhaps agility trials, for fun. How should I adjust my Stay and Release cues for the most clear communication with my dog?
Yes for me "free" is "come" for me "go sniff" or "go play" for me is they get to do whatever. I think that for obedience you should read what they prefer and train that for the competition. Saying stay really is not much of an issue I think in your case. Its more for new owners who will say "stay, stay, stay, stay" to their dog or train a down stay for so long that then when they say sit, and then stay, the dog might drop into the down as hes associated down with the word stay. But dogs can learn the "concept" of "stay" it just takes more time than sit means sit stay down means down stay and stand means stand stay. I use my own cue "wait" which is like the cue stay, when I want a dog to when learning a trick to stay in the position they are in.
You know your dogs clicker trained when.... I'm watching this video and my dog comes over all happy "I heard the clicker!!!! Where's the treat!!!!!" Thanks for helping with my transition to positive dog training Kikopup!
Really enjoyed this video. As a cross-over trainer it is great to see how happy the dog is while learning. I will be definitely trying some of your suggestions.
Hi Emily,
Why did you choose to use the clicker as a "keep going" signal in this scenario? I am not a big fan of having the click meaning "keep going" in some situations and being a release in others.
Thank you,
Jose Miguel Gomes.
So do you not have a verbal/visual cue for stay then?
I love this video BUT I think i was distracted because the outdoors looks so beautiful lol. I kept thinking how much my dog would love such scenery :)
This is great- thanks for making this vid! The only thing I'm unclear about is...when do I give her the "stay" command?
Thank you very much for your insigth, always. Which brand / model of treats pouch are you wearing?
Doggone Good you can get it on amazon
Hi! What would be the time frame for training this sit/down stay? For how long and how many times a day? I realize the time it takes to fully train the STAY varies from dog to dog, but curious if there's a general good pace and schedule for the steps? I.e. Step one - 1 week - 3x/day for 5 min/day? something like that? Or is that overly prescriptive? Thank you!
Are u making any more videos? It's 2016. Great stuff
luv u, cheers.
This method worked beautifully with my in-laws hyper 13 mo old GSP!
Oh well done!
If anyone doesn't have a clicker, but a smart phone then please look for an app! I'm super cheap so I just use iClicker (but I believe there are like 2 others but this works for me) from the AppStore and it's working amazingly!
Love your videos. I have multiple dogs and wondered if you hav a griup training videos. Meal time is a ' feeding frenzy' and not sure how to stop the barking and jumping. Should I start one on one?
ILOVEYOURVIDEOS :)
Didn't have to do the rest of the steps!my dog already listened!♡
I also taught him stand from this vid♡

Hi, you can try putting the new word in front of the old cue (ok) for a while and then drop the old cue.
So you could say 'release ok' or 'Free ok'
I use 'go free' The dog will begin to move with encouragement on the first new cue.
Hello, I was wondering if you could do a video about what order you should teach different things. For example, if I get a puppy home, what do I teach it first? It's name? To responde to the clicker? The positive interrupter? What order and what are the most important? This would be so helpful and I know others have requested it too!! :)
I just taught my dog to stay with this :) Thanks a lot! You're my all-time favorite dog trainer!
Well done! :)
I'm training my puppy and she does really good with come and when I point and say go, she goes to where i point but when I tell her sit, she will sometimes go all the way down. Working on that.
You're Awesome! Thanks. :-)
Thanks for the comment! :) It means more people see my work so I appreciate it!
The click ends the behavior, according to what we were taught in the Karen Pryor Academy, so I don't repeatedly click during the stay, except sometimes when adding distraction. I do sometimes employ multiple treat delivery during the sit, depending on the individual dog. I do like the way you are instructing how to teach a release cue and I agree this is the best and fastest way to teach "stay".
By the way, I know that some people, for example Chris Bach uses the click as a marker signal, not a marker signal and an end marker. Having learned her way prior to the Karen Pryor way, I can honestly say that both ways work, but it is important to be clear and consistent with the dog in training.
Great video, but have you thought about moving your treat pouch to the left side of your body?
One of the smartest dogs on the planet. It doesn’t count. My last dog was so smart you could tech him virtually any trick or command in less than 15 minutes. Beautiful animal.
same with husky and mix breed chihuahua terrier czcams.com/video/Vk4PPcE1CqY/video.html
When i try to lure my pet in a position holding the treat over the nose a little up he tries to eat it. As a result my hands get hurt. How to do a proper lure so he does not jumps or plunge for the bite
Hi i was wandering what treats should i give my dog when teaching clicker tricks? Any suggestions?
Shaping is ok as well...I usually use capturing for some new behaviours. But generally, whatever works for each dog,,, : )
This was really helpful, do you find that puppies regress at certain points because of the new things they learn or they just offering things or both? At age 7 months we sometimes feel like everything we have taught her goes out the window for days at a time, then we get a great day, any ideas about that? I am used to the other way the the dog progressively learns and has some errors. She is happy and healthy just seems to be more goofy, I guess immature? Blessings.
Can you please do a tutorial on how to teach your dog to be calm around toys, or if you have already made one I could use, can you provide me the link?
Hi, just found your channel and have already watched 5 or 6 of our videos. We have 2 rescue dogs who are anxious & reactive. We have just had training with bark busters which teaches dominance and it has not really worked. We are going to give the clicker training a go. How do we get them to stop barking when someone knocks at the door or if they hear a noise through the night? The other problem is they bark and lunge at other dogs on the lead. Any advice would be most welcomed
Chelsea
Would you use this differently than a traditional sit? or is this more to ensure your dog always stays sitting when you give the command until you use the release word? im wondering if you would want to train 'stay' separate using this method or if the sit is sufficient?
And one more ! Are all the clickers the same or some are better than others ??
The release cue need to be fully trained on various behaviours like sit stand down crate etc? Or the dog generalizes the release cue to other behaviours himself?
