The BEST and FASTEST way to teach STAY - stay training, stay fun!

- Training your dog to stay using this method incorporates many wonderful concepts into the training process:
1-By click as distractions happen you are using classical conditioning to change your dog's emotional response to being calm and relaxed around those distractions. Lowering a dogs stress levels when asked to stay, which in turn will make the behavior more reliable. The distractions become conditioned secondary reinforcers.
2- By teaching the release cue first, you are using 'back chaining' by working on the end of the behavior of the stay first. Back chaining creates strong behaviors.
3- You are using the Premack Principle: the higher probability behavior predicts a lower probability behavior. Staying predicts getting up and getting to do what the dog wanted to do. Meaning the behavior will be stronger.
4- By clicking the release as a behavior it becomes a secondary reinforcer. So every time you release your dog from a stay, you are actually rewarding him for staying.

Update on Ace - I have gotten him involved in playing some of the games czcams.com/users/postUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU and I can see a difference in his confidence already! My other dog played along and he became intrigued - now its a daily part of our routine - about 3 times a day we do the shell game and the muffin tin game. I am so grateful for coming upon your training techniques!
I realized through your trainings, that by training the animals we are training our own nerve system, getting patient, conscious, blissful ❤️🙏🙏
yes it is true
I love this trainer she is so precise and she teaches you steps by steps how you can actually do this..I have a 2month old German shepherd and I was amazed how she learned the sit and down command and less then 30 min..a little more practice and I will have a very good doggie..I recommend you to check her out you won't be disappointed..
I will give you some great ideas, tricks, and instruction that may help you turn your puppy into the best behaved, most happy, jogging, bouncing, slipper-fetching best pal you always wanted?. Watch here ===> plus.google.com/107984602498948672598/posts/ZndGCQHkPrj
ok
Is he trained yet
She doesn't teach any caveats or issues you may have. Like others have said, my dog won't stand. We're stuck. I am disappointed.
I have an Eng.Bulldog/Staff/Pit mix. I thought she was very outgoing but, now realize she's scared of all new situations and dog intimidated. I'm an old dog trainer(punish/reward) but, I'm seeing this isn't building confidence. She's taking on a half dominant rule because she doesn't feel my leadership or that I'll protect her. Your training is just what I need to be friends with my dog not her boss. I'm sure she'll call down and worry less if I start a new way of training her. Thanks so much for teaching this old dog better tricks!!!!
FriendlyPitbull1 building a trusting partnership with your dog produces amazing results for all occasions. Good luck with your progress and that you have seen the light.
First video I have watched and I will say props to you. You are one of the few dog trainers on YT that actually allows comments.
I think that's the nicest, one could possibly give and you say you were an old-school trainer even better I have only watched three of this lady's videos but I found her to be one of two of the best I have ever seen or experienced personally after watching possibly 4000 different videos on CZcams with different trainers behaviorist all different schools of thought Etc and all of that research I have only found one other that is I would say equal but extremely different showing how to use dog body language and nothing else to train not even a single word it is Martin McKenna the dreadlock dog man as I said and probably three maybe even 4000 videos and different everything's LOL these two this lady here and Martin are like absolute Gods compared to everyone else with their methods absolutely being clear not only to you but also the dog 100% non punishments and 100% works on every dog the first time amazing stunning the rest of the people on CZcams teaching in my opinion could now be absolutely deleted can we would have a better or balanced Society of pets and owners props to you and thank you so much for your hard work the dogs thank you too
I just wanted to tell you we started one week ago. Dusty didn't like to lie down more than one second. Whenever I took my hand away he stood up. Now we are training the release cue. Its still a lot of work but hey, he stays in a down for more than 5 seconds. Thank you!
Wonderful video!! I really appreciate how you use a trained dog to show the behaviors you want, and an untrained one to show how it actually works, fails and all. Thank you so much for loving dogs enough to make this available for free.
My dog now an 8 month beagle follows sit ,down, stand and also stay command. He also holds on stay with some distractions for at least two minutes but somehow I always felt something was missing.Without doubt I can say this is the best I have seen how to teach sit, down and stay.
my dog already new how to sit and stay but he would only hold it for about 10 secs, and now that I showed him the release cue he wont move until I release him, I can jump up and down, tell him to come, call his name and he wont move. and it only took ten mins and a hole chicken for my German shepherd to learn it. Thanks for the vid!!!!!
lol @ chicken
sharm godfrey how old is your German Shepherd?
Starving kids in Africa could of ate the chicken
I've worked with animals for over 20 years and I always seem to learn something new when I watch your videos. Thank you!
Absolutely love and follow your Videos. I'm in the process of working towards My CPDT-KA. It's sooooo refreshing to see A Trainer that knows learning theory, and all the other important aspects of dog training!!! Thank you so much for making this information readily available to the public!!!!!!!!
Awe thanks Dawn! :)
@Chipwhitley274 Dogs are not toys or possessions in my opinion. I do not risk their safety making them stay in dangerous situations. My dogs are my companions- so if I see a dangerous situation- I get my dogs out of there- even if it makes me look rude or like an ******* to other people. My dog comes first- not someones hurt feelings. I have had to see two of my dogs get attacked while they did not bite back or complain- if its in my power I will keep my dogs safe from all harm.
wow Emily... YOU ROCK!!!
I just discovered you, and I love the way you teach your dogs, I'm going to start right now with my two years old dog to improve her behaviour and obedience.
I already had a clicker but I've been using it in such a different way because in the other videos that I had seen people didn't do things step by step like you, and even mixed the use of clicker with some negative reinforcement... I'm done with negative reinforcement (I didn't even realize that what I was doing was "negative" at all!!) from now on.
Thanks and stay awesome!
Somehow, I am in love with this lady...and her hardwork..👏👏
@collinmorrison98 You can use the word "YES!" in the place that you would click- you can use a whistle too- like dolphin training
OH WOW.
That's why I couldn't get a perfect stay or make him sit and go down so well, there is so much more into it! Thank you so much for this.
Excellent! Thank you so much!
@EvelineUK arg... I trained Kiko the release word "ok" ... I am actually retraining her the word "free" because I SAY OK ALL THE TIME!!!! ARG! and that is why I warned against it- but the bit with kiko is taken from old footage. The White dogs owner chose to use the cue "release" :)
I think my dog stole the clicker and has trained me
Love your videos... Gives me hope for my 2 totally untrained, but adorable pooches. 🐾
@hdsheena I totally agree! I believe in Europe you can choose either the back feet or the front feet to stay in the same location in OCI. But I think this is easier to lure for pet parents than teaching a down from a sit where the dog has to scoot their back end backwards. In fact in my dvd it will go over how to teach the tucked sit and the pop out stand and the scoot down from the sit. also these are good for the heel position (a tucked sit looks so much nicer)
Wanted to say thank you so much for your videos! You have helped us train our new c.lab to sit, stay, down, touch, shake a paw, come and roll over in just 2 weeks. Your videos make is so easy to understand!!
I have watched this video probably a hundred times already. I love it!
You make this look so easy!
My dog had troubles in staying and I thought the only drug was time. I waited for a year and now she stays more reliably and I can start more advanced training when I have the will to do so.
What a great video! You are a wonderful and generous teacher. I am so grateful that you provide your instructional videos for people to learn from and that also show what dogs are capable of learning with reward-based training. Thank you
Your dogs are so well behaved. I will be frequenting your channel and using your methods for my collie. Thanks for all your work! Its a huge help.
Simply brilliant.
I love this Thankyou so much.. my first dog in years.. get him tomorrow he is a 3 year old Labrador mix ..
You a delight !!!
thank you for sharing your amazing knowledge , brilliant !!!!
New video - Quick fun way to proof a stay! czcams.com/video/BIhJj8YvG7A/video.html
Your training videos are some of the best I've seen. I keep going back to them again and again to keep them fresh in my mind. Thanks for sharing your expertise. You've taught me so much and my dogs are benefiting from you. Keep up the good work.
You are the BEST! Your videos are so great, you are like the most patient and lovely dog trainer I've ever seen.
Emily thank you so much for the instructional videos you post! I discovered you when I first got my BC puppy and this summer he turned 4! Your positive, fun approach has continued to be the foundation of our training! Now we are doing Agility, but I always find a direct connection between the basic tools you're teaching and what I'm working on now. For instance, I plan to use the principles from this Stay lesson to strengthen my dog's 2-on-2-off position at the bottom of his contacts!
Thank you so much for these videos. You explain it all so well.
Wow those first shots were amazing!
this is a great way to teach the stay! i've never thought about training it like this! thank you!!
You're AMAZING!
my son is so in love with dogs which reminds me wen I was young so I want to help him train his dog n this is very helpful

Another great video Emily, can't wait for the DVD!
She is the best!!!
Always a pleasure to watch you Emily.

Love it... Thank You...
Wow, you are an amazing trainer ! And the step by step is incredibly easy to follow. Thank you so much for posting this. I can't wait to try it. Great work!
Great educational video thank you so much for posting
this is a great video. thank you for make it so extensive!
Wonderful!! Thanks for your effort!!
Excellent, detailed, useful and above all, effective! Thank you.
Thank you coach ♥️
by far the best video i have come across
thank you so much :)
@Chipwhitley274 regarding treats... the dogs (and cats) trained by the military to follow directional radio orders from a handler stationed miles away were trained similarly- not using positive punishment. The reason the military used this form of training is because it is more reliable than using punishment.. not because they were hippies. The STAY to me is a "trick" as with positive reinforcement you dont really have to teach a stay- you can just teach your dog to stay within 15 feet of you
This video was EXTREMELY helpful, super well explained and super easy to understand. thsnk you so much for videos like this! You cover everything I'd thought to ask on many other videos I saw that didn't go into detail becuase the dog was already trained, and even tho yours are already trained you cover all possible variables for a dog that is learning for the first time! Amazing tutorial job thank you!
This is actually a very smart way to teach stay. I think I'm going to try to retrain my dogs in this method. They have trouble with staying sometimes and I think this method may work. Thanks!
WOW at the beginning. I hope I can get my new puppy to behave this way!
Great video! Thanks!
você é demais, muito boa treinadora!!
Thank you very, very much for this great video!
Because my dog, he is a rescue dog, has always problems with stay.
But he must know this important command!!!
After watchig this vid. I startet the training. and now, is he the best staying dog in the group! Thank you!
Great job!
your very good at what you do. thanks
@AllDogs4life not sure how long that will last- I expect people will not like this video because its very different from what info is out there at the moment. I am ok with people not liking my videos :) What really drives my video making process is when people email me about their successes.
If you're also having trouble with your puppy, remember to excersize them. You can't just expect something with so much energy to keep still.
you are terrific....
EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT video! It was worth the wait! :)
I love that you can clearly explain to and teach others to do what you do. :-)
love your vids. keep up the good work
You are amazing, how well you know the psychology of the dog👍🏻🙏🤗🤗🤗👌🏻❤️❤️❤️
Great video!
Your are so good .it's so easy. Thanks
Very helpful - thank you!
The first part of this video where your dog is chasing after a frisbee and you just say down and he instantly hits the deck has inspired me...wife and I adopted a Borador(Border Collie Lab mix) and he is 1 years old...we are wanting to get him trained to that point of focus. Been watching all of your video and just have to say thank you for making these so that us novices have a shot at making our pets as well behaved as yours.
This video is wonderful. I can't wait to use these techniques on my blue heeler.
my god.. all i need is this video.. i have 2 months old welsh corgi and she is so hard to train . thanks for this guide ^^
your a great trainer!
Best videos I've seen on youtube. Thanks for giving us these for free! I wish I would have started with your videos. Either your methods are amazingly effective or if I have the smartest dog in the world.
Thanks, I was planning on getting a Pembroke Welsh Corgi and these videos will help me prepare!
@nataliawasilewska97 When you teach a behavior backwards- Like teaching "drop it" first when teaching a retrieve- then teaching the dog to offer and drop, then teaching run towards you, offer and drop, then pick up, run towards offer and drop, then run out pick up offer and drop... etc. For the stay- you teach the release cue first. :)
@MyFavoritePupJasmine Thanks :)
Absolutely fascinating! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!! I cannot understand whom and why someone does dislike this video.
amazing video!
I really appreciate your channel. There is a TON of trainers on youtube who disagree with eachother so it has taken me awhile to find a channel that I am confident in their methods.
I know it's really confusing. I feel bad for people getting conflicting info. It is a good skill to watch a video and ask oneself if what the person is saying is based on science or opinion and the chances of it being likely. I take everything I learn from even my most favorite trainers and behavior and science as something that could be true or untrue... If someone makes a generalized statement, its important to wonder, how did the statement come about?
Another great video Emily!!!
Awesome!
You are really good at training your dogs.
Great to see such a nice way of training here.Well done : )
great video!
Perfect! I am getting a new puppy and will use this method. Thanks
that was a smart way to teach a dog and it really helped
