I just bathe in the beautiful sound of Cocteau Twins lyrics without worrying much about what they mean. It works for me.

This is my all-time favorite band. Everything they ever did was great, and they're the only band that I can say that about. I use to know them in the 90's. A lot of people thought they were summoning the voice and music of God. They were just ordinary people making extraordinary music. They didn't live in the clouds or descend from heaven. They were just really nice average-acting people. If I had a request of them it would be their song titled Persephone. Just to clear up, there was only one vocalist, Elizabeth Fraser, and contrary to what a lot of people used to think, she was singing words in mostly English, sometimes using words she would find in old English, she just took artistic license with the pronunciation of a lot of her singing of them.

There are times when I listen to the Cocteau Twins where their songs bring me to tears. Liz's voice and Robin's sweeping guitarscapes trigger such an emotional response ...

All the vocals are Elizabeth Fraser. And with that cleared up, it's time to scroll down and laugh at the people who sincerely believe they know what the lyrics are...

When I saw The Cocteau Twins live they had a reel to reel machine on stage as they had no drummer. This meant their set was locked in but Liz was incredibly gifted with a golden voice. Treasure is my favorite album of theirs.

Nice reaction, thanks... you could do a whole side project on Elizabeth Fraser's guest vocals... someone's already mentioned "Song To The Siren" by This Mortal Coil (fantastic), but I'd also recommend "Primitive Painters" by Felt, and there's also her work with Massive Attack (especially "Teardrop")

  • @thesoundlikechameleons2082

I have the vinyl sleeve of this signed by bassist Simon Raymonde. He actually messaged me the other night saying he was leaving a certain platform, and gave me his new address/details! lovely bloke.
The song 🎵 is a masterpiece in my opinion.

"Heaven or Las Vegas" album is their magnum opus from 1990 when they are in full bloom with the title track "Heaven or Las Vegas" being a joyous sunny dream pop masterpiece to the last track "Frou Frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires" a deeply spiritual and moving outro which is extremely personal to Liz if you can find the video with lyrics you'll understand why upon reflection. The vocals in that track are glorious, complicated and intertwine so well. You should just listen to that whole album on your own if you want to really understand why they are so influential. Liz's vocals are much more expressive and developed and is why some say she is the voice of God.

The parts of the song that are relatively decipherable suggest nothing more and nothing less than a bucolic sunrise tableau - ruby suns, ruddy cups, rows of pearly dewdrops, rooster, lark in [metaphorical] paleasse, tulips...I just wish I knew what she was gabbling in the chorus prior to the repetitive "pearly pearly pearly"...
Some strange and dubious theories about this song have been floated (especially on a certain blog) - let's just say that I do NOT believe that it's about a cosmological disaster.
All that said - this song has major nostalgic appeal for Brits of a certain age because it was the Cocteau Twins first major commercial success.
Also, the video has gained some fame because it was filmed in and around a disused psychiatric hospital in Virginia Waters - one which was active in the days when they used to execute patients for being too "hysterical". (There's an article about the video shoot and the morbid details behind it, in the Melody Maker archives, and reprinted recently in one of the History Of Rock bookazines).

Check out This Mortal Coil also on the 4AD label.
The band was a collaboration of musicians from a whole bunch of other bands like The Cocteau Twins, Colourbox, Dead Can Dance, Modern English, and The Wolfgang Press.
"Song To The Siren" is a fantastic cover and has Elizabeth Frazer on vocals and "Sixteen Days/ Gathering Dust" from the same 12" are fantastic.

Thanks for doing this one. Actually I really appreciate that the song summoned images of little kids dancing around outside in pajamas! That’s exactly was CT music is supposed to do-paint a picture in your mind and elicit emotions just based the sound alone.

    Classic period Cocteau Twins.
They were a bit more Punk at first, the first album is like a rawer version of this sound, so you might get some mileage out of that,... Something like the song, In Our Angelhood. Later they did some gorgeous Ambient type stuff with Harold Budd.
As for the words, she could always repeat them, they are a kind of personal language to her... Some Twins songs do actually have words you can follow, but are so swamped in the mix it's difficult.
She was always something of a recluse, she didn't want to be involved in the writing of the music and would only come to the studio to lay down vocals. After the Twins were finished she did very spotty appearances on other peoples work.
There was no solo career as such.

    Ruby stars are ruddy
    It's a pearly dewdrops drop
    Wakes to light the fire
    For the pearly dewdrops
    Ruby suns and ruddy cups
    Rose the pearly dewdrops drop
'Tis the lucky lucky penny penny
Binds the pearly to their souls
    Taciturn's a color

    Rooster eye on my star
To rip asunder what he saw

Elizabeth Frasier is the only female singer in the band. Their lyrics are more based on word sounds, not word meanings. There are no real "lyrics" to a Cocteau Twins song. Go into their music like you're listening to someone sing in a foreign language. Treasure Hiding from their Milk and Kisses album is definitely worth a listen. They truly are a genre all their own.

The Cocteau Twins occupy an odd place in what I choose to remember. I listened to their EPs in Iraq on my Awai cassette player. "Blue Bell Knoll," and reading Thomas navigating unknown land. It's crazy, isn't it? Yet, being in combat is worse. Very weird.

Thanks again for featuring. It's not so much that they don't have lyrics in English, it just that without a copy of them in front of you you'd often not know what they were singing about - the massive compensation being Liz Fraser's wonderful voice.

No one has explained the difference between the 7" and 12".
    Not much.
The 7" is basically an edit of the 12" which is really just the full song. The 7" cuts off that first 22 second quite opening and starts right into the main song instrumentation. Then it fades out at about the 4 minute mark of this song and looses the ending coda and cold stop.
This song introduced me to the Cocteau Twins back in '84. It was played by my college radio station KLSU while working on an architecture project late one night. After hearing them, I had to find their stuff. At the time, all their albums and EPs (this is from an EP) were imports from England to us in the U.S. Luckily, there were several record stores around LSU that actually carried them.
