Their first Top 40 hit! Beautiful, almost something Christmassy and joyful about it, it shimmers and they are starting to bring in the multi-layered vocals and melody lines which will become a big part of their sound. I'm not sure if she had started working with a vocal coach at this point but she's certainly finding different ways to use her voice and it's so expressive and the melodies so gorgeous it doesn't matter what she is singing. I missed commenting on Pepper Tree, which is my favourite of the EP, it's like a sultry mysterious aural equivalent of a Pre-Raphaelite Rossetti painting. This one is more like a Klimt, golden, with repeated patterns and swirls, a mysterious woman at it's centre.

I recently got Robin Guthrie to sign my 7" vinyl sleeve of Pearly - Dewdrops' Drops! Simon Raymonde has already signed it.
    Beautiful romantic song.

Ruby stars are ruddy, it's a pearly dewdrops drop
    Wakes to light the fire
For the pearly dewdrops drop x2
    Ruby suns and ruddy cups
    Rose the pearly dewdrops drop
    'Tis the lucky-lucky penny-penny
Binds the pearly to their souls
Taciturn's a color, taffy turns anemones
    Rooster eye on my star
To rip asunder what he saw x2
    Ruby star Dorade, star Dorade

Sonically, this is the CT sound and presentation that hits the mark. I have a few of Guthrie’s later solo album releases and collaborations with Eno and other ambient soundscapists which are superb in their own right.

From The Spangle Maker EP, "Pearly-drewdrops' Drops" is the track that comes closest to the forthcoming Treasure LP, with the multiple vocal parts of Elizabeth Fraser. it is in a way the most melodic of the three pieces, but my favourite remains the vaporous "Pepper-Tree".😉

So glad you heard this one, it wouldn't be possible to hear some more of their best if you're just going album to album. This song reakky does give a christmassy vibe like @MarksatchwillArt says It's amazing how beautiful this song is and her vocals are so unconventional yet beautiful at the same time. Wonderful reaction again Matt!

Standard comment which is still applicable:-
The parts of the song that are relatively decipherable suggest nothing more and nothing less than a bucolic sunrise tableau - ruby suns, ruddy cups, rows of pearly dewdrops, rooster, lark in [metaphorical] paleasse, tulips...I just wish I knew what she was gabbling in the chorus prior to the repetitive "pearly pearly pearly"...
Some strange and dubious theories about this song have been floated (especially on a certain website) - let's just say that I do NOT believe that it's about an cosmological disaster.
All that said - this song has major nostalgic appeal for Brits of a certain age because it was the Cocteau Twins first major commercial success.
Also, the video has gained some fame because it was filmed in and around a disused psychiatric hospital in Virginia Waters - one which was active in the days when they used to execute patients for being too "hysterical". (There's an article about the video shoot and the morbid details behind it, in the Melody Maker archives - reprinted a few years ago in one of the History Of Rock bookazines).

Famously made John Peel cry. I quite like the C Twins but this is the only thing by them I ever bought - it's so superbly done.

Less said about Peel the better. A disgraceful bloke on radio 📻 who discovered bands. Glad people know about what he did NOW.

Yes, Dubstar too! (I can already hear you, "Dubstar who?"). But yes, I dig this ethereal, dreamy, yet still mystical sound.
