I was born and raised in East-Germany. My grandfather used to have a Saporoshez like this in red. Beside many design flaws I remember it was a rather smooth ride -and I loved the air intakes on the sides. What an iconic car!

The ZAZ V4 engine is one of the greatest engines I've had pleasure to see in action. We've had a Luaz 969 and it was a beast in offroad. The engine was the same as here and it was so convenient, you could've pulled it out easily and without a crane, just get it home to do some repairs and then put it back just as easy. It didn't have turbos, too much wires or anything fancy, no hundreds of HP, but it was just enough. The simplicity of the cars based in former Soviet Union was just unbelievable and they really served their purposes to the full. I know many people won't understand it if they lived in the "Western" part of the world, but this brute simplicity worked in the environment it was supposed to be in.

The ZAZ 966 was in production 1966 - 1971, followed by the 968, an almost identical car, which also had many sold as invalid carriages. My father had the same car in 1970. It was the cheapest car to buy in Austria back then (in Austria it was called "Eliette"). According to my father the gasoline driven heater used more fuel than the engine itself, but it worked very fine after all. He constantly had problems with the thermostats, which regulated the airflow to the engines, killing it after a short period. So he got a new engine for free. Shortly after that, the Sapaoroshez was history (and so its brand new engine) because he rolled it several times....

Underside is badly rusted, but hope someone can restore it, Zaporozhets are some of my favorite cars.
EDIT: Though that may just be surface level rust on the chassis; you’d have to replace the axles, wheels, brakes and suspension mechanisms definitely though. The engine, most of the body panels and interior are definitely savable though. I’d go for it as a restoration project if I had access to it, parts and knowledge.
EDIT 2: The front storage compartment also has a rust through, but that would be fixed with a donor/welding. I hope whoever buys this fixes it up.
