  • Husqvarna walk behind string trimmer review. I used it hard on some thick brush and grass. This is the best piece of equipment I've bought in a long time.

    I knew you'd like it. I started a lawn care company years ago and one of the first jobs I got was a lawn that looked like a hay field. Went to Lowes and they had an MTD at the time that was only $150 so I jumped on it. I started that business on a shoe string budget and that was the only new piece of equipment I bought. All the rest was free that I picked up and fixed. Lawn mowers and blowers and weed eaters and manual tools. Awesome video!

      Yep, I mowed a property about 2 years ago with mine that was 3' tall, trimmer worked great, didn't have to worry about rocks and such like you would if you were using a regular lawnmower. Took a little longer with the trimmer but not really sure if it did in the end because I was hitting rocks, stumps, etc with the trimmer that would have damaged or destroyed my lawnmower....more like it saved me money in lawnmower repair or replacement LOL.
      My trimmer sits a lot now, but man it was sure a great investment, although I paid $20 for it about 6 years ago and it was only used once, it was definitely money well spent for the trimmer, a roll of string an air filter, basically a tune-up because the people I bought it from used it once and then let it set for a couple years.

    I started a cleanup of my property this spring (been sick for several years and it's been let go bad)
    I looked at the Husky walkie seriously about 2 months ago and after much indecision went with a 128LD trimmer for a variety of reasons. (health being one, versatility being another as I have a polesaw, brush blade and snowblower from a Poulan Pro 31cc that died - they fit great) The 128 would be a great addition especially with your breathing issues, it's amazingly light and a powerhouse. The titanium line Husky sells is good stuff for the stick trimmers. One filling (4 meters if I recall) last a very long time, and it's good to about 1/4" soft stuff.
    With the flail (3 swinging aluminum blades) on the brush cutter attachment it is good to about 3/4" and is devastating to thorn bushes, thistles and sumac saplings. Beyond that I switch to the 8" polesaw turned 90deg (without extension) and it will effortlessly cut to 4" without bending over.
    I've owned a Husky 27HP commercial ZTR, and a 445 Rancher Chainsaw that has worn out no less than 10 chains and It's never needed anything.
    This spring I bought the model 240 because the big one gets a bit heavy doing light work. (Just before the 128) It's the lowest end saw they make and it's amazing. Husky has never let me down, I was surprised to hear the big trimmer line was less than great, but it happens I guess...
    Your video got me thinking, next time I see the walkie on sale and I have a few bucks to spare, I may just add to the fleet.. Sure seems to work well.
    Nice video, hope you feel better!
    No mans land looks Good!

    I could have used one of these trimmers the other day. I have to trim tall grass on the back of my garage and it's like a hill. It's tough on my back with a weedwacker and tough on my push mower. I sent out a smokescreen when I push mowed it (oil blow by by tipping engine) Kept the bugs away though.
    And couldn't you just flatten that part of your yard?

    Two things I have done,, first leave an old short string looped in to protect the working string as the loop and hook of the plate are stamped and have sharp edges. The second is I added a half inch pvc pipe with the bottom capped held on by hose clamps to keep the string in.

    I have one of these. It works well on flat ground. The problem is you can cut weeds for 5 minutes then spend the next 30 minutes cutting the grass off that gets wrapped around the shaft with a screwdriver, a long thin sharp knife and a plyers to grab and pull the grass off once you cut it. It's a hassle!

  • @bc65925
    @bc65925 Před 8 lety +1

    Dad bought one of the first weed eaters seams to me like it was in the 80s. Anyway the engine was down on the head and it wore yer arse out using it. But it came with rubber coated steel cable on it for string. Wasn't long before they figured out that was not safe for most people to use. Especially if not wearing boots. It would throw off a small piece of wire every now and then. But man would that thing go thru the brush.

  • @wildbill23c
    @wildbill23c Před 8 lety +1

    I thought one of these was a great idea, until you spend so much time replacing the dang trimmer string. Mine sits in the shed most of the year now. I'll trim around the front ditch with my hand held trimmer once a year and use the walk behind along the back side where its too rough for a lawnmower. These things are great, just not around fences just like any trimmer LOL.
    I don't use mine very often now, but man they are awesome when you have larger areas to tackle. I made a pvc tube to store pre-cut strings in so they are right on the trimmer handle bar that way when I'm using the trimmer and need to replace the string its right there on the trimmer I don't have to go cut new string every time.
    Mine is the Craftsman, but looks like the head is the same at least the way the string is attached is. I really wish they would come out with a trimmer head like on many hand held trimmers that has a bump feed, now that would be awesome LOL.

    What are the advantages to this over a regular push mower? We bought a riding mower and do the entire acre pretty easily and quickly, and have a weed eater for the edges, but some parts of the property are too big for weed eaters and too tree infested and inclined for riding mower (it's a ravine). So for those areas I was thinking of getting either one of these or a regular push mower. I have never owned one of these but I have owned a push mower in the past.

    • @bctruck

    I wonder what's the benefit compared to a traditional hand trimmer (beside carrying the weight instead of pushing it)... With a traditional trimmer you can go with a up to down motion and smash enormous bushes , plus with a circular motion you can probably work faster. I'm trying to find an upgrade from a traditional trimmer, cause I have to deal with a big field, and looked into these things, but still not so convinced.. I think I'll go with a power mower

    • @bctruck
      @bctruck  Před 4 lety +1

      The difference is the push type have 5 hp motors to cut through brush. The hand held scant do that and if the made the engines big enough to do that, you couldn’t carry it.

      @claudiocastellikurageart Před 4 lety

      @@bctruck yes, that's a good point. But for the brushes I have I'm fine with the hand held one. The problem are some big untamed fields.. Can You tell if is faster on weedy - tough tall grass than a traditional one? What if makes me doubting is that it cuts 50 cm every pass, while with an hand held one i cut 30 cm, but with a circular motion it gets to around 2 meters..

    • @slimjim7411
      @slimjim7411 Před 3 lety

      @@claudiocastellikurageart It's a lot easier and better for cutting tall fields. Because you can just push it like a push mower, and walk behind it. Rather than walking and swinging I have a very good Stihl weed eater that will rip through anything BUT I wouldn't try to cut a high field with it. It's sort of like try using a weed eater to do your whole yard, then you'll quickly realize why you have a push mower. These things are really like a push mower for grass and weeds so tall a push mower won't go through it.

One of my high wheel trimmers just threw it's connecting rod out the side of the block. I don't think that Duck Tape will fix it. Do you think that one of those Harbor Freight engines will? They both are about the same size, and the shafts on both are 7/8", but the length of the shafts are slightly different.

    If you ever have any kind of problem at all, I know that you will probably figure it out, after staring at the thing for about a half an hour, but if you want to know how to fix it without wasting that half hour, just call me. I almost got these things figured out.

    Thanks for the video. You sound a bit out of shape based on your heavy breathing. Check your blood pressure so you don't over exert yourself. I'm wondering what this trimmer costs. I may rent this tool to see how it performs.

      Thanks for your concern. I've got way more medical problems than just "being out of shape" I was in an industrial explosion that destroyed 40% of my lung abilities to process the air I breathe. I do the best I can despite the constant comments on my breathing by people who have no idea how thankful I am just to be alive.

      Thank you. I have a riding mower, but I need to get blades and a deck belt. I am just going to use my dad's trimmer for the front yard and around the house. I hope my yard doesn't tear it up. I have almost 2 acres that got pretty high.

      My dad told me not to use his weed eater, because he claims that isn't the right kind of oil. He swears it uses 2 cycle oil. I think he's wrong, but he wont let me use it. He hasn't come yet, to get it. My friend got her husband to mow my yard with his riding mower. It got so high, he couldn't get it all the way down before dark. He said he'd come back if I don't get my mower fixed.

    • @bctruck
      @bctruck  Před 7 lety

      donna lombardo it does NOT use 2 cycle oil!!! It's a gasoline engine. If you put 2 cycle gas in this engine, it won't run.

    Sears sells the line, and I always get mine there, my mom still gets an employee discount because my dad retired from Sears. I've had three of these mowers, in fact, I have never owned any other kind of mower. (three different models) The one that I currently have has had every part on it replaced except for the body, handle and wheels. I just put a new control cable on mine on Tuesday. (2nd one so far) Whenever you order parts get them off of eBay. My control cable cost 20 bucks through Sears, but I got mine for 10. And it was a brand new factory replacement part. BTW. All of these string trimmers are the exact same trimmer. They aren't Craftsman's or Husqvarna's, There ain't no telling who makes them. But I lost both of the plastic shields years ago. The mower works much better without them, and it is easier to remove debris from the works when you don't have them guards in the way. Just remember to always wear long heavy pants when your are working with one. My mom was pushing hers in shorts and it cost her $200 to get a stick pulled out of her leg, and get a prescription for antibiotics.

    • @bctruck
      @bctruck  Před 8 lety +1

      I'm thinking about altering the plastic shield where it won't dig into the ground as much.

      i took a pair of metal shears''aviations''and cut a large angle out of mine and works great,one thing i really dont like are the hard plastic tires,if you encounter roots or anything hard it will beat you to death hitting them,looking now for some air filled tires to replace them also just had a problem with the small brake that rubs on the flywheel when you shut it down,it cut a groove around the flywheel and the metal shavings got stuck in the magneto that jambed it up and couldnt pull start it,had to disassemble it,emory clothed the groove to get the curls of metal off it,sand it out of the magneto,it did it 3 more times after that i had to take the brake off and just put a kill switch on it to turn it off,otherwise it cuts like a beast

    Hmm I wonder if you could have bought some of that braided wire steel cable & cut it to length. I'm sure that the safety Sally's would have a fit. But it might last a good deal longer than that expensive plastic weed trimmers stuff.

    Helluva job, nicely done! But, ummm...is there a reason those whip strings are plastic and not stainless steel wire rope?

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c Před 8 lety

      Hit a fence, rock, pipe, etc. with a wire rope spinning at a few thousand RPM and you'll quickly learn why they are plastic LOL. The string will break, the wire rope will catch and yank that trimmer right out of your hands.

    • @AnnBearForFreedom
      @AnnBearForFreedom Před 8 lety +1

      Ah. True. LOLOL. Didn't follow that thought through, oops. Thank you for that logic. My bad.

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c Před 8 lety

      AnnBearForFreedom It would be fine in a totally open area that is clear of obstacles but otherwise it wouldn't be good LOL. They have trimmer heads you can get that have 3 metal blades on them, same thing with those, great idea until you hit a fence or other obstacle and it throws the trimmer out of your hands. I have one of the trimmer heads that uses 3 plastic blades, it seems to work fine but even the plastic blades on it will cause problems if you hit a fence LOL.

    • @AnnBearForFreedom
      @AnnBearForFreedom Před 8 lety +1

      And as long as you had a good relationship with your trimmer, yeah, you'd be fine. But your first disagreement would mean the trimmer would SEEK OUT fence posts. And there you'd be, loudly arguing with your string trimmer in your front yard at noon on a weekend morning.
