Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy - Mother of The Kennedys, 1973

- An exclusive filmed interview with Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy. She talks about her life and how she coped with the violent deaths of three of her sons; Joseph, President John F and Attorney-General Robert Kennedy.
Filmed at the Kennedy homes in Hyannisport, Massachusetts, her son Ted and daughter Eunice also feature.
The Radharc team created another first when interviewing Rose Kennedy, Mother of former President John F Kennendy and former Attorney-General Robert Kennedy. No film crew had previously been given access to the Kennedy home. Her son, Senator Edward Kennedy and daughter Eunice Shriver are also interviewed during the programme.
The idea for this film came about after the tragic death of a teenage girl in Athy, County Kildare. The Radharc team discussed making a programme that might help parents to cope with the sudden death of a child. Why not talk to a woman known worldwide as mother of not one but three children who had died tragically and very publicly?
Rose Kennedy agreed to the film after an initial approach through Fr Delaney, a parish priest in Florida near the Kennedy winter home.
As the Radharc team prepared to travel to America a cable from Mrs Kennedy cancelled the interview. Fr Dermod McCarthy flew out to meet with Rose Kennedy and after spending the weekend in her home, Mrs Kennedy was reassured and agreed to the film being made.
Rose Kennedy talks about her faith, raising a large family, the difficulty of losing three sons through violent death and a life immersed in politics.
‘Mother of the Kennedys’ was first broadcast on the eve of the tenth anniversary of the death of President John F Kennedy. - Zábava
As a granddaughter of a Irish immigrant in the United States I must say that the Irish immigrants in this country are very very tough people
Greetings from Ireland, how right you are.
God love them - they had a facade of toughness because they had to survive and work, work. Thank God there was work for them to do. God bless USA for opportunities. Yes, the Irish paid their dues. Just look at how much good the Kennedy family did and how much they endured. Blessings and Slainte.
My ancestors came to Africa and she was a family member of the Kennedy.
I too have Irish ancestors. They had to be. They had nothing in terms of wealth, a tertiary education or assets to return to. America was expected to provide that.
And no one else is tough? Does that silly generalization apply to other races?
I just came upon this, I didn't know a lot about Mrs. Kennedy. She went through such tragedy in her life. Her faith sustaining her through it all.
Husband was a serial cheater, he had their eldest daughter Rosemary lobotomized without her consent. Lost two of her children in airplane accidents, two of her sons assassinated, etc., yet managed to push on & not wallow in self-pity, truly inspiring woman who lived to be 104 .
Would have been more inspiring had she kicked old Joe to the curb.
@@cherylmulvey Agreed, but sadly this was the "stand by your man" generation....

@@ratso69ful81 Your welcome Ratso. Your comment was well studied and your statements were profound & true to form. Great commentary. A man who knows right from wrong & good from bad & evil. I like your ways of thinking in that my friend. You also have a kind heart in recognizing what Rose Kennedy was all about. She was a martyr & stood tall amongst all the difficulties that constantly surrounded her & that was due to her loving family members plus her undying faith in God.
I love what she once said..it isn't the events in your life but how you handle them. She was an inspiration and a thoroughbred.
Amen to that Beth!!!
Yes, she chose badly for a carPETbaggER to MARrY a BOOtlegGER
That's Marcus Aurelius. She was an inspiration to no one.
She was a full of **** social climbing Vatican kook. I still feel sorry though for any mother that loses her children because of murder or disease. Yet she and her pro-Hitler husband Joseph were shallow enough to put their daughter, Rosemary, away and have her given a lobotomy. These people were shallow, cold as ice and crooked as a corkscrew. Many people that were famous in the 1930s supported the The Nazi Party officially the National Socialist German Workers' Party (German: Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei or NSDAP). But when the Germans tried to reclaim their lost lands from their empire and then some, people had to choose a side. Joseph Jr. died from a military accident near Blythburgh, Suffolk, England.
How beautiful to hear directly from Mrs. Kennedy! A grand interview. 💚💚💚
i pray for the peace, unwavering faith and grace that Rose Kennedy had.

Her strength is incredibly overwhelming & beautiful. How she speaks, what she says, so unpretentious & selfless like my grandmother. I'm such a lucky man to have her still
She reminds of the strong character of the women of that era. They didn’t tolerate superficiality . I miss that quality.
Tell your beautiful grandmother what you told us ☺️💖
She didn’t care about Rosemary
Such a strong matriarch . To endure the multitudes of tragedies in her lifetime with dignity and courage speaks volumes to her character. With that said you could still feel her pain towards the end of this presentation when she spoke about her children's demise.
eldest died in WW2
Thank you Rose for what you have accomplished for this entire World may God Bless 🙏
In spite of all the tragic/horrific events that she and the rest of her family went through, she was a strong-headed and inspiring woman who has lived to an old, ripe age of 104. Keep RIP, Rose! 🌹 🙏🏾 ❤️ 😇
This is excellent , showing more their side and perspective and the human side of the family. Well done .
She endured much with her life and family! She was a great woman of faith!
I had never seen the side of Rose she presented when she spoke of resignation to her losses. A word I would choose is disappointment. She invested so much and they were cut down just as the return was coming in. This was a very human side. Of course she struggled, just not publicly.
Thank you for posting. She's someone you actually don't hear as much about when it comes to the Kennedys.
Amazingly strong woman, mother, and role model. She never fell apart despite enormous heartbreak over and over.
I was born in New York but raised in galway. Moved back to the US when I was 18 ( a penniless immigrant of sorts) and went on to spend 8 years in the Marine Corps getting my higher education fully paid for. You have to admire the Kennedy family and everything they achieved in the U.S. Great documentary as always CR
Hope life is going well for you 🇮🇪🇺🇲
Ireland will always have a strong bond with america even today with the last presidant and
all his faults and now an old man
I salute you Oisin. Blessings galore to you and thank you for your military service. You say you were a penniless immigrant - well, if I may say - you had so much to bring to the table because my experience with the Irish immigrant is they are honorable people with integrity and compassion and a deep sense of equality for all and a need to serve humanity. So many attributes that money can never buy. May the road rise to meet you. My brother, an immigrant, served in Korea. Sadly, he passed in his 50's. Beautiful soul and so handsome. Slainte.
The Roman Catholic Church is trying to erase history with Jesuits and Rosemary was not retarded and you are not supposed to lobotomize and sterilize women for not obeying church rules.
My grandfather was a John Fitzgerald from County wexford, mum always told us that grandad was a relative of Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, one of my older brothers have been investigating,,it would be lovely if it turns out to be true, my parents are both in their spiritual home now, God bless them ❤
One of the most interesting and fascinating Kennedy family interviews I have ever come across. But yes, sad, too. It must have been overwhelming the things that Rose had to endure. It is obvious how much her faith influenced not only her life but the whole family's.

Don't forget her daughters lost in tragedy
She lost her husband and several children and grand children before she died. She definitely carried the cross for her family!! Of all the Kennedys, I admire Rose most because she was the backbone of the Kennedys. Having lost so many of her children, she still found time to handle these tragedies with such grace and kindness. She took her marriage seriously and was all about the better or for worse. Joseph was a parasite for treating her the way he did with all his adultery but she still stood by him.
They're not together in spirit..now...
Because Joseph is in spirit prison!!
How is it admirable to stand by a cheater and abuser? How is this woman, who refused to attend her daughters wedding and funeral because she went against the catholic church faith admirable? rose cant even recognize and process her own emotions and instead says "god has me". This whole family is full of shit
She was the perfect example of the grand mothers of that time.
My Grandmother was a Fitzgerald....sweet, small but strong, red with freckles....very learned, was a school teacher on the plains of MN...small school out there. Many times she put a blanket on me when sleeping when young. I put blanket on her the night she passed.

I read her book, Times to Remember. She said, "God gave my children many gifts but He witheld one gift---long life.". Such a wonderful lady with strong faith & dignity in good & traguc times. May she rest in eternal peace.

Her grammer, and articulation, are perfection. It's a pleasure listening to her speak.
Rose held it altogether and deserves far more credit than she has been given, as men were given so much validity in those days. But she wasn't treated well, taken very much for granted.

Mrs Kennedy did the best she could. You have to remember the times. She was much more involved with her children then other mothers of her era.
I believe that Rose Kennedy was a devout Roman Catholic and her faith sustained and bolstered her. She bore the loss of FOUR of her nine children. It's the most ghastly and horrendous loss a mother can bear. I don't know how she was strong enough to withstand such losses. 😞
I spent my honeymoon in a cottage on the compound in 1973. It’s a lovely place however I think people would be surprised how many other homes are around it. There aren’t any tall fences or anything to suggest what lie up the driveway. Everyone was respectful of privacy. I never realized, back then, what a historic place it was. I was fortunate to begin my marriage in such a beautiful place.
Her strong faith in the Lord
Carried her through Life . Always keep going on .
She's like Doris Day SINging 'whatever will be will be'.... she did nothing to stop the evil in her own CASTle...
It was delusion, but a useful one.

AMAZING INTERVIEW! God Bless and Keep Her Soul. We can all take away hope, inspiration and wisdom from this program. In many ways, in spite of their wealth and power--they experienced the same joys, sorrows, successes and failures that any given family might have. Her FAITH made the difference!
Truly truly, the Kennedy’s are cursed, as my father used to say. ( we are Kennedy’s)
My father met Jack kennedy at a dinner when Joe senior was stationed in London- my father and JFK sat next to each other and were astounded to find that these two young men were not only born in the same year, but in the same month and the same day of the month. ( 29 May, 1917)
We too had a large family, but had tragedy after tragedy with my brother Liam first to go, at 20, drowned on a fishing trip in a massive gale. My mother the next year, at 44, cancer, and on and on it went. We are now decimated. Rose is so strong and inspiring, we didn’t have anyone like that to pull us through.
😔
Ahhh it must be very hard for you. I feel your pain as you wrote. I’m 74,a Candian grain farmers wife and my family is also struggling with cancer, hip replacements and mother is 98. We lost our father over 30 years ago. We also are a Christian family and most have put their trust and life in Gods hands. Not all is easy, and I live far from them all. I’ve sometimes thought of Rosemary because I have a daughter with a disability and I think Bonnie’s life could have been even worse, had she had Rosemarys treatment. I just wanted to encourage you this evening. I think there are blessings not to be wealthy or famous. There is an old Irish saying about wishing the wind would always blow at your back,,,,,sorry forgot the rest,,,,but I do wish you well. Your family branch matters too and I hope you’ve written your memories down.

An exceptional woman. My mother used to say my life would have been easier if I believed in God. She was right.
Regrettably you are largely correct here. The disowning of Patricia over her marrying outside the church was cruel and bigoted. The whole family went along with that. At 13:30 Eunice Shriver says that her mother, Rose, claimed Joe Kennedy was the perfect husband and father. Really? After destroying his beautiful daughter with a forced lobotomy and then sending her away and never seeing her ever again. And Rose didn't see her daughter decades after that either. She is Boston Royalty! Her father was Honey Fitz! the mayor of Boston. Joe Kennedy wanted her for his success. How dare you say that with out knowing her history. She was a great lady from a great family. Her hubby had her daughter Rosemary lobotomized behind her back. The Kennedys are into the special olympics due to what happened to Rosemary. Watch the documentary the hidden Kennedy. I am from Boston. The expressway is named the Rose Fitzgerald expressway. Do your homework before you say SHE MARRIED for money. JOE was a bootlegger. He needed her to make his name legal.. he was an asshole.
@@mimibee626 Its called Rosemary: the hidden kennedy. very sad story. the girl was a bit slow. did not need a lobotomy at all. listen to that your heart will break. but you are so wrong about Rose.
Nannies she was in Europe getting latest wardrobe
@@beatricewoods8377 How lucky she was to have 'that' option. MOST women who have no choice but to ENDURE this kind of treatment from "husbands who control the wealth" put on a 'social' face and try not to think about it. Rose could actually LEAVE the environment but by doing so she actually CONDONED this behaviour. All of a sudden my respect for her has evaporated because this shows me clearly that money and social standing were MORE important to HER than a genuine and loving relationship........................No wonder the 'boys"were a^%$&*%#
Jackie in the Schlesinger interview said Joe took care of the family. Rose was off to Paris for new clothes or going to bits over missing placements.
This was so sad...I really liked the Kennedys
