Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy - Mother of The Kennedys, 1973

  • An exclusive filmed interview with Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy. She talks about her life and how she coped with the violent deaths of three of her sons; Joseph, President John F and Attorney-General Robert Kennedy.
Filmed at the Kennedy homes in Hyannisport, Massachusetts, her son Ted and daughter Eunice also feature.
The Radharc team created another first when interviewing Rose Kennedy, Mother of former President John F Kennendy and former Attorney-General Robert Kennedy. No film crew had previously been given access to the Kennedy home. Her son, Senator Edward Kennedy and daughter Eunice Shriver are also interviewed during the programme.
The idea for this film came about after the tragic death of a teenage girl in Athy, County Kildare. The Radharc team discussed making a programme that might help parents to cope with the sudden death of a child. Why not talk to a woman known worldwide as mother of not one but three children who had died tragically and very publicly?
Rose Kennedy agreed to the film after an initial approach through Fr Delaney, a parish priest in Florida near the Kennedy winter home.
As the Radharc team prepared to travel to America a cable from Mrs Kennedy cancelled the interview. Fr Dermod McCarthy flew out to meet with Rose Kennedy and after spending the weekend in her home, Mrs Kennedy was reassured and agreed to the film being made.
Rose Kennedy talks about her faith, raising a large family, the difficulty of losing three sons through violent death and a life immersed in politics.
‘Mother of the Kennedys’ was first broadcast on the eve of the tenth anniversary of the death of President John F Kennedy.

Yes, the Irish paid their dues. Just look at how much good the Kennedy family did and how much they endured. Blessings and Slainte.

She was a full of **** social climbing Vatican kook. I still feel sorry though for any mother that loses her children because of murder or disease. Yet she and her pro-Hitler husband Joseph were shallow enough to put their daughter, Rosemary, away and have her given a lobotomy. These people were shallow, cold as ice and crooked as a corkscrew. Many people that were famous in the 1930s supported the The Nazi Party officially the National Socialist German Workers' Party (German: Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei or NSDAP). But when the Germans tried to reclaim their lost lands from their empire and then some, people had to choose a side. Joseph Jr. died from a military accident near Blythburgh, Suffolk, England.

Having lost so many of her children, she still found time to handle these tragedies with such grace and kindness. She took her marriage seriously and was all about the better or for worse. Truly truly, the Kennedy’s are cursed, as my father used to say. ( we are Kennedy’s)
My father met Jack kennedy at a dinner when Joe senior was stationed in London- my father and JFK sat next to each other and were astounded to find that these two young men were not only born in the same year, but in the same month and the same day of the month. ( 29 May, 1917)
We too had a large family, but had tragedy after tragedy with my brother Liam first to go, at 20, drowned on a fishing trip in a massive gale. My mother the next year, at 44, cancer, and on and on it went. We are now decimated. Rose is so strong and inspiring, we didn’t have anyone like that to pull us through.
