I think the nets are there just for show or maybe to catch falling objects that people might have left in their pockets. I have been on this and there is no way anyone could fall out, you are strapped in so tight you can barely move.
I was on this today, sitting across from a little girl who DID NOT want to get on it but her mom made her. She was ready to cry before she even got on. She was directly across from me and I was watching her the whole time I was on this, when we were in the part where it holds you upside down she was crying and the tears were running UP her forehead. I laugh about it now but that is fucked up that her mom made her get on it when she was nearly in tears saying that she did not want to go.

It's not for people if they fall, but its for any belongings lost out of pockets. Hats, glasses, etc.
If you sit in the middle it is not bad, just do not sit on either end of it. I rode it twice in one day and managed to keep my lunch in my stomach.
