Hilda is an animated streaming television series based on the graphic novel series of the same name by Luke Pearson. Produced by Silvergate Media and Mercury Filmworks, the series follows the adventures of fearless Hilda, an 11-year-old blue-haired girl who, along with her mother Johanna and her deerfox Twig, moves to the fictional city of Trolberg after their old residency in the outskirts of a forest is destroyed by a giant. I like the idea that the bell keeper has blue in his hair due to having some kind of fairy ancestry. It makes the world feel more expanded to show that different characters can have connections to magic without being related.

My head cannon is that the Bell Keeper is descended from a fairy changeling.
They could be connected, as he has almost the same hair color as the mom, and the blue streak! So maybe it’s the uncle/brother of the mom
Anders' sudden appearance makes me think Pearson wrote him in to answer a question he knew fans were too obsessed about to let go.
Maybe ahah. But in one of his interviews prior to Season 3 he mentioned he had a story with Hilda's dad in mind, so that's gotta be it 🤷♂️

It’s sad to see Hilda end, it was truly a really great show.
At least it had the chance to have a proper ending unlike most shows nowadays

I love how Anders bumps into the Bell Keeper at the end of the movie. I like to think it's a nod to the speculative part of the fans.
Yeah, I like to think that they’re just doing it to acknowledge the theory so people can be like :0
Maybe the bellkeeper is part fairy like Hilda? Like maybe some of their traits are having an appeal to cucumber sandwiches, blue hair, and having an affinity to wildlife. But because Hilda's fairy ancestry isn't revealed til the end, Pearson probably realized people were thinking he's her dad, so he removed the blue hair to make it less confusing?
or maybe they just cancelled their plans about him because Netflix did cut off 6 episodes of season 3. I guess they couldn't add everything in only 8 episodes.

I think it would be so smart if the writers made it so that the bell keeper went to the same boarding school as Joanna, and that’s why he smiled when he saw Hilda reuniting with her. He remembers her from school and I would hope that would make an episode evolving their relationship and Joanna remembering him.
To be fair the bell keeper can still be father FIGURE even if he is not her biological father.

4:41 Kinda because it makes no sense why his hair was 100% brown in season 3 while in season 2 it was obvious he had some blue points. I'm pretty sure they were actually planning to do something with him but eventually cancelled it for some reason. I wasn't so sure if he was her dad but I was hoping him to be her uncle or at least a cousin. Do you believe they were planning to do something but they regreted it?
I don't see any reason to throw away this idea, it would've been really cool 🤷♂

He could have been descended from a changeling fairy.
I think it might just be the lighting. It's pretty bright, and the blue streaks in his hair are a little faint.

I feel like the bellkeeper was totally meant to be hilda’s dad, the blue hair and the focus on cucumber sandwiches were a weird detail to leave in

You can sense that they made many changes during the production of season 3.
Still sad that this show has ended but Hilda will be sticking around for a while and keep us all entertained.

Hilda’s dad was the only part of the entire story that bothered me. It was such an emotionally rich storyline with a lot of depth, but it wasn’t explored enough in my opinion. Hilda’s mom explains pretty well (for a child to understand) that he loves her and is doing her best. But that isn’t an excuse that he’s a deadbeat and wasn’t there for her. I feel like they needed that moment of Hilda being like, actually this isn’t ok and you can’t come and go as you please and you have to make an effort, and then he would have a big apology scene or something. Like sure, he loves her, and he cares a little, but not enough of either apparently. Ya, him trying to save her from the fairy island is a bit of a redemption arc, but not really.
Yeah, it would've been nicer to explore their relationship a bit more, but I think the creator kinda made it clear that this was never planned as a major storyline, unfortunately 🤷♂
Honestly I still feel like her dad's appearance in the third season was a bit sudden, but I don't think its really the writer's fault, season 3 was already cut 5 episodes short
I see some comments about how the bell keeper could be hilda's uncle, so here's my headcanon, more than a theory.
I like to think that the BK share story with astrid (probably a friend / partner from the past?) like, we just never got to see more of her during her youthful years, just to come back and find his brother is going to be dad... so, maybe she met a young BK at the time she was absent? I mean, it's quite obvious that astrid is older than the bell keeper but, let's be honest, he's not in the same age range as johanna, plus he seems to be older than anders so, maybe he ages like fine wine? (he's not balding haha!).
Im ngl i heavily dislike hilda's dad.
It just feels like we got a kanuckles and flapjack situation but without the oddball nature of kanuckles (his only good part)
Idk maybe if he looked like he's experienced the world in some form then he'd be more interesting i mean look at hilda and her mom BOTH look like adventurers when in causal or dangerous situations but hildas friends (and her dad) look like average shmoos even after both have gone through a few off screen adventures (and one being a witch) no one really prepares any sort of "adventure gear" (except hilda who always seems to have a plan in mind and is smart and hildas mom who packs everything when with hilda(

But I think he really showed some care for Hilda as a dad (after all he decided to move to Trolberg), so what he really lacks is just the struggle to self-improve
Perhaps we could've gotten this character development in Season 4, but now we'll never know 🙃

Mans spent most of his life visiting his family unannounced and with no real aid to give to his family before dipping away and leaving his wife stressed and his daughter to kinda just be there
I thought that the Bell Keeper was Johana's brother. It turns out she was an only child, but I think that the possibility that they knew each other is still valid. They may have met in the Sparrow Scotts where they discovered a mutual love for nature which led her to become a painter and, to pay the bills, a graphic designer and him to the Safety Patrol where he could do such things as watch the waff migrations. The meeting between him and Anders during the Great Raven Parade makes me think that they knew each other, may have been brothers. The Bell Keeper may have stayed away when he saw Hilda and Johana together because they had had a bad falling out and he didn't want to reopen old wounds for her. If so, Anders might be able to heal an old friendship.
i think it was just a fun way to give closure to fans who subscribed to the theory.

As for the show, I LOVED IT. 😍
I just don't see why they would change it. Luke Pearson said the show could well have ended after The Mountain King yet Netflix gave them a season 3, so they actually got more screen time than expected

The fact that they gave him blue hair, and gave him so many scenes of him bonding with Hilda in the show and they both liked cucumber sandwiches just makes me so confused, but ig they didn’t like that it would have been to predictable and since they didn’t make him her dad they had an excuse to make more episodes on why she had blue hair. Hence the fairy mound, fairy world and whatnot
I loved the 3rd season. It showed us why Hilda’s mom and dad are not together anymore. Hilda’s family tree and she is a fairy after all 💪🏻 Gave a true closure with Hilda’s dad staying.

Idea, what about making a video about explaining Hilda being strange strong sometimes? For example, in season 3 while she was with her father trying to steal a treasure from a troll she did manage to climb with just only one arm a wooden pole like she did horizontal bar by just using only one arm! It's not just quite impressive but how a 13 years old girl had such strength to do that. I'm much older than her but when I tried once to do horizontal bar I did manage to do almost the half from what she did and I had to use both of my arms, lol. I bet she would beat everyone in arm wresting! Also, in season 2 she did manage to lift a mountain sheep like it was nothing and when she was little she had move a heavy rock to save Twig. Also she throws a chair 20 feet above her head at the time worm. Pretty sure she is being weird strong because of her her fairy generetics.
That's an interesting theory! I never really paid attention to that, but I'd think it's just that she spent the majority of her life in the wilderness, so that's why she's more used to doing things like that
@@Yarocrafter Even if she's well trained of her adventurers it's quite hard from such a young age to have such strength. It's true that her wild life did make her more strong than other kids in her age but still seems pretty weird sometimes. There's also other people thinking it's because of her fairy genetics.

I think that the Bell Keeper and Johana had known each other from Sparrow Scouts, but had had a falling out, possibly over Anders. When Anders and the Bell Keeper met at the Great Raven parade, Anders suggested reaching out to Johana again.

They didnt destroy any theory, for me Luke Pearson wanted the series to end in Hilda and the Mountain King so they introduced the bellkeeper as his real dad, if you rewatch first season after you finished the last season, you can see that really all of this origins arc of season 3 left some plot holes...

@@Yarocrafter Johanna in first season said she was a sparrow scout (there arent any in Tofoten) but she got abandoned by her parents at the age of 10, she couldnt go live alone at Trolberg being a minor, and Astrid said she never leaved tofoten, so i really dont know if Johanna escaped or something after her encounter with fairys (Or maybe yes and thats why she is adventurer like Hilda, even tho Hilda liked adventuring and Johanna was forced to do, and that is why she is so overprotecting with Hilda) but then i dont see another way of explaining it, but idk season 1 was the less lineal story of all the other seasons...

@@Yarocrafter well i dont think so, maybe everyone knew Astrid was Johanna's aunt so if she escaped she would be likely returned back by any local authorities or is reverse, Astrid as a fairy didnt like humans so no one knew so much about her and when Johanna escaped then she will be in a boarding school. And Astrid didn't have any relatives in the human world even in the fairy country everyone seems so alone, not in families...
