Ghost Stories English review - Goofy Dubs and Dead Horses

- So, I was asked to review the english dub of the anime Ghost Stories. The thing is, nobody really "reviews" this dub. There's no real "Ghost Stories review." They laugh at how absurd it is. Well, I'm not gonna do that. I'm gonna look at it like a critic. Why?
Because I'm a jerk.

Thankyou! I loved this series at first, but then got to the point I could not stand it and was unable to finish it for the longest time. The jokes do just get stale after a bit. Still fun to come back and watch a random episode every once in a while though.
So much of the humor in this series would get the voice actors canceled by Twitter today.
That opening description perfectly describes my current job.
The ADV box set/discs had additional jokes written in the subtitles, apparently called "Dubtitles", not present in the re-release set (That also included a dub more faithful to the source material.) But I can follow your your logic towards the end of the video. Show is best enjoyed in short bursts to keep from burnout and horse pulping. I enjoyed the review.
I've always been glad that exactly one of these got made. Seeing what's essentially a professionally done version of the fan parody dubs like Dirty Pair Does Dishes that you used to see at old conventions was amusing, but seeing a whole bunch of series get this treatment would have gotten old really quickly.
You know I once heard from a CZcamsr that the dub inspired Team fourstar and other channels that make abridged series! And I don’t think he’s wrong about it! 😂😂😂
One thing I find amazing is how long the anime community just accepted the lie that was used to justify the dub because of how easy it was for anyone to look into the history of it and find it wasn't just a lie, but it wasn't a very good one to boot. Honestly this is probably one of the worst dubs ever made not just because of what it is in itself, but the fact that everything wrong with the American dubbing industry and localisation basically came from here. The western anime community would be objectively superior had this dub never been made.
Ladies and Gentlemen, it's time for an ACTUAL review of this dub.
Also, this is always gonna be insane to think about as a dub.
I'll say this about this god forsaken dub, if you want an actual retrospective on the dubs production check out Mercuryfalcon's video on the dub. It's amazing how much dishonesty ADV Films got away with regarding the production of this dub that people blindly believed for years without bothering to fact check it until relatively recently.
Considering that the series kind of flopped in Japan which is why they were so lenient with the script, I can see how it would get stale after a while, tbh I can't imagine this show running longer than an average 12 episodes like some series.
Good to see that at least you do point out some flaws with it, I couldn't imagine it being perfect just because they changed the script
What's the music used in the background?
So kind of like Sealab 2021? Sounds like it'd be good to watch a couple episodes at a time, spacing out the series so the jokes don't feel as stale by the end.
For my own part, I think the Ghost Stories dub peaked with the rabbit episode. Prior to that, it was steadily finding its groove; after that, it was hit or miss. That one episode, though, delivered as much as it possibly could.
Many approved of that dub. I don't. Because it was the excuse for much worse dubs.
So "gag dubs" shouldn't exist?
@@1685Violin Those Who Hunt Elves & Martian Successor Nadesico have 'gag' dubs in that the voice cast had fun layering in additional jokes for the American audience while staying reasonably true to the original work. The Ghost Stories dub isn't that.
Hardly a review, really. More just like an opinion piece with a view that contradicts the popular consensus
