    The public mods I used to showcase these ideas are Quark and Yung's better caves, and the private ones are called Cave Upgrade and Nether Extension, both of which are available on the patreon.
    Nether Extension has the glowing obsidian as well as some other features to improve 1.16. It doesn't have too much content at the moment, but it will hopefully be getting more soon. More info here: twitter.com/TeamAbnormals/status/1294138580554493953
    Cave Upgrade was our secret mod available to patrons and nitro boosters; its main features are the TNT variants, the crystals and enchanting system, and the copper. Copper still needs a lot of polishing before all aspects are usable, but it's playable. Since 1.17 is Caves and Cliffs we have temporarily stopped working on it.

    Allot of people seem really put off by the idea of having more ores in the game, and I really don't really understand why, obviously if you just add twenty new metals and try to slot them at different points between iron and diamond it's going to be ugly, but there's no reason it has to be that way. Look at lapis, it's a deep spawning ore, but doesn't fit anywhere on the progression scale, it has no tools or armor to craft, but it's mandatory for enchanting, and you can grind it down into blue dye, if we're going to add more ores, that's the way we should be thinking about them, new ores should expand the game outward, not try to build on the limited progression system. For example we could add an ore like pyrite, pyrite is most well known for looking allot like gold, so it could reflect that as a decorative block that looks like gold, but is significantly cheaper to craft. It also creates sparks when struck against a hard surface, so it could make a more durable version of flint and steel for people that hate farming for flint. Lastly, since it's most commonly known as "fool's gold" maybe an unsuspecting villager wouldn't be able to tell the difference, allowing you to use it as a substitute for real gold when trading

    • @MinecraftIdeasAcademy
      @MinecraftIdeasAcademy  Před 3 lety +400

      Those are some interesting uses. Depending on the rarity you might need to come up with more though.

    • @Jakexsists
      @Jakexsists Před 3 lety +363

      I like the idea of "fool's gold" trading a bit of a gamble. Villagers might have a hidden "intelligence" stat, which determines the effectiveness of fools gold. If a villager has an intelligence of 0, it would be a guaranteed fact that fools gold would be accepted. On the other end, a villager with an intelligence of 100 would always notice that it is fools gold. This would go beyond this, however, because if a villager realized that you're trying to cheat them, they would refuse business for at least 1 (actual number likely determined by intelligence, the higher the stat the higher the ban) minecraft day , and then open again with raised rates, having the amount added slowly fade from its peak to normal price. (That time is also determined by intelligence, same rules.) One way to reduce this time is genuine trading. You can also completely cancel the effect by trading with the villager with the "Hero of The Village" buff. Also, I think it should increase the rate of noticing fools gold during the "Anger Period", as I'm calling it. This comment ended up being a lot longer than I expected. oof
      Edit : Yeah this probably works better with piglins because A.) gold and B.) villagers seem like chill dudes, and piglins would be the ones to ban you. Instead of raised prices probably just restrict the high level stuff.

Then I realized that what they did add, such as the plethora of foliage blocks in the Lush Caves, and redstone blocks like the sculk sensor, only generate in caves and because of their purposes even if they aren’t new ores or crystals, the caving reward is still there, and the new generation even added an intrinsic reward for caving because of the potential scenery that the new caves can bring.

    I think giving the ore blocks (coal ore, iron ore, etc) lower blast resistance than stone so that it's easier to blow up an ore vein would be neat. Then on top of that, give regular TNT a fortune value (which, when it blows up iron and gold ore, it turns the yields into ~10-14 nuggets per block). Dunno if it should work on diamonds or not. This would at least give some incentive to use TNT for mining.

    I like your ideas, but the tnt and boomstone thing really doesnt fix the issue. People rarely use tnt as a way to mine, unless it is a tnt duper. Your idea to add an ore to make gunpowder more accessible is a much better idea than adding new types of tnt, especially when you think of all the new ores and possibly complicated recipes you would need for each type of tnt. You have some really good ideas here, but remember that minecraft is meant to be simplistic, adding so many features like this would probably be too much for the average player to look into and in most cases they probably will not use them in a casual playthrough. Think of it like tipped arrows, we definitely have them in the game and they have their uses, but people rarely use them in a typical playthrough.

      Before I brainstormed boomstone, I was just going to have TNT variants craftable from regular TNT. It was simple, but also lackluster. I don't think adding boomstone is more confusing, its unique properties will make it the source of much experimentation. As for the other variants, they don't necessarily need new ores. Silk touch TNT, for example, could be crafted with TNT and lapis. I can see that being useful in early game.

    Correct predictions list:
    Cave biomes
    World height being extended by making the bottom of the world deeper
    Underground having the same height as the nether
    Foliage (glow lichen, everything thats in the lush caves biome, dripstone if that counts)
    Pots (kind of, pots got delayed until past cave update and they won't generate naturally)
    More variety in the cave generation itself
    New cave generation being designed for all play styles
    Spaghetti caves
    Strip mining not being punished
    Crystals (amethyst geodes, but not currently used for enchantments)
    Edible and climbable cave roots (kind of, since you eat fruit that grows of off them and not the roots themselves)
    Underground structure being more dynamic with the terrain (mineshafts hanging on chains and having supports)
    New ore / new underground resources
    Copper (but no copper tools or tech (unless you count spyglasses and lighting rods) currently, unfortunately)
    Different ores generating at different y levels to encourage having multiple mines
    The update only adding one new ore
    (This was sorted by when they were mentioned, and not listing things that were shown in only the background footage. This is also before part II started releasing, so I don't know about anything mojang decides to add that they didn't mention previously. Let me know if I missed any)

    Doubling world height and depth isn’t that simple either. There is a reason world height is a power of 2, as it is a function of computing power. Mojang doesn’t want to require you to have a $1000 graphics card or 32 gigabytes of RAM to enjoy Minecraft. Agnes confirmed the technical difficulty of changing world height but expressed they want to find a way to do it. I really hope they figure it out, but I hope people don’t become angry with Mojang if they can’t find a way to deliver.
    It’s important to remember it’s fine to hope for and ask for features in games to be added, but ultimately game developers owe us nothing. The game is their creation, not ours and we have no entitlement in its creation. I’m grateful Mojang listens as much as it does. Here’s hoping world height doubles.

    Now that 1.18 is starting to come closer and closer to its final state, it's pretty obvious that it's more of a "terrain update" than a caves and cliffs update. The new cliff generation has completely stolen the spotlight and it now feels weird to think of how ignored it was back in 2020. I'm fine with this, because of how incredibly promising the new terrain is looking to be, but sometimes I wish the terrain was underwhelming so that way they'd be forced to give depth with additions such as minecart improvements, and more progression. The more and more the scope of this update increases, the more and more redundant the biomes themselves feelin comparison. The caves need some love too. Hoping this gets addressed in some future update.

      Creepers are the first that come to mind, but how much they run counter to the game is part of their identity at this point.
      I think you did a good job addressing some of the problems with the enchanting system with your "Monsters and Magic" video, but I think lighting and transportation are some of the bigger issues that have yet to be resolved.
      Even with the changes to mob spawning conditions, you still have to place an excessive amount of torches or other light sources to prevent monsters from spawning in a large flat area, like a plains biome or a big cave. I think moss carpet was a good in-between solution, allowing glowstone to be more easily concealed, but I think something bigger is in order. Beacons flooding nearby chunks with light level 16 would be a great way for players to make sure their base is well lit without having burning sticks all over the ground, and prevents them from immediately preventing any monsters in a dangerous area like the nether or a cave.
      Although elytra was nerfed to bring it more on the level of breath of the wild's glider, options like minecarts, horses, or boats didn't see any changes, meaning despite having more reason to explore, players are left with less effective ways of doing so. In my opinion, rails are still too expensive for the little reward minecarts bring.
      Additionally, I feel like Mojang has been trying to provide viable alternatives for practices based on bugs or exploits, like ice boats or iron farms being interchangeable with soul speed and megaveins. I understand their reasoning for keeping these features in the game, as they offer a unique gameplay experience, but I don't think they should be more viable than solutions developers intended, as in many cases, there are.

The process of mining, or doing anything in a game really, being a winding path of changing ideas and strategies due to new discoveries, rather than a single, drawn out activity, is really important, I think. Something like going to the nether to mine some gold with the intent to strip mine, but then seeing a ghast and using it for it's fortune-like effect, or going into a cave to mine, and finding a tiny outpost to hide out in, alongside a chest with a few pieces of tnt which you then use, or manipulating a creeper to mine with, may seem like small interactions, but I think they make a world of a difference in keeping the experience fresh and enjoyable.

    I’m kinda glad he mentioned terraria while taking about this because there is one feature it has that minecraft’s ore problem could benefit from and that’s its range of different valuables. in terraria, there are ores (like gold and cobalt), special ores (like luminite and crimtane), and gems (like amethyst and rubies). they’re all used for different things. ores are used for regular metal stuff like weapons and armor, but gems are specially found, have their own hierarchy system relative to the ores’, and are used for specific things, like magic items. gems don’t replace ores, they complement them.
    minecraft has a feature like this, and that’s lapis and redstone. you can’t put them in an armor/tools/weapon hierarchy system with the other ores because they are used for their own special things like enchanting things and making redstone contraptions. but if they added more things like this that could help players along their journey (even and especially early on), that would be greatly beneficial for motivating players to mine and explore for more interesting things underground

    I disagree, the major flaw in caving is the fact that all caves look the same. If Mojang (or a mod) can create a unique atmosphere through mobs, blocks, music or even light (colored light), the player experience would be driven by exploration, and each mining session would be completely different. The major difficulty is to maintain the same level of interest throughout the years, without the need of an update every once in a while. One approach would be to create sufficient ambiance disparities, but would require a lot of new blocks, most of them without any purpose beside decoration. Another approach could consist in creating interaction : through mobs behaviour, new gameplay (parkour) and maybe occasional bosses (the warden is a step in the right direction). The cave could spontanuously change aswell, like growing dripstones, cave flooding according to weather or drastic ambiance changes (dynamic spider nests, cave collapsing, etc...). If there is enough interaction, every journey in the cave would feel different, encouraging the player to better prepare itself, to create outposts and would open the gate to new features ans gameplays !

    2 years later and this guy pretty much laid out exactly what they did lol.
    A doubling of the World-Depth;
    Underground Biomes to avoid monotony;
    Different Ores at different Y-Levels to promote a mining strategy;
    Copper Ore and its Oxidization mechanic;
    New Ores/Structures (Amethyst Geode + Deep Dark) with unique Items to promote Mining over other forms of resource gathering;
    Wow. Great ideas! I feel like someone at Mojang definitely saw this lol.

    So far, as of me typing this comment, we have multiple cave biomes - lush and dripstone caves, along with the deep dark, with dripstone mostly implemented into the snapshots and accessible in custom worlds - and copper is also found at iron levels, though it's used for more as a building material than anything else, and iron hasn't been touched at all. We also _kind of_ have crystals in the form of amethyst, but they're the same as copper, more or less. There's also functionality for custom world heights, but again, it's only available if you code it in a datapack. Dungeons are planned to have a bit of an overhaul with their appearance and generation.

    Mentioning extending the build height limit, considering the mountains and those are large open caves they showed, I’m hoping this means they are extending it.
    If they are extending it, I hope the underground does ended up being around the same size as the Nether. (Alongside a bunch of other changes.)

    I think that something that would add to the experience is having ore specific mines. As in "wow I found a coal mine, I will come back with fortune when I need a lot of fuel". They would be a regular mine but with a lot of ores of that specific type. Maybe you can even use a new type of villager to get maps to these mines. Imagine a villager that can get you to a diamond mine. This would create a lot of exiting moments when mining.

    I came back to this video after seeing this year Minecraft's live event, it such a shame that Minecraft didn't do more with the caves and cliffs update. It would been such a great opportunity to improve minecarts and use them as a tool for mining. I came back to this video since there finally adding more uses for copper, I hope they take inspiration from the copper segment in this vid.

    Since it's the Caves and Cliffs update, with changes to caves and mountains, how about rare volcanic biomes, both active and inactive? Active volcanoe biomes would have lots of surface lava, basalt and blackstone, and obsidian surrounding the edges of some of the lava pockets. There'd be lava tunnels filled with resources under the surface of the biome, with lots of rare ores closer to the surface than anywhere else, but you'll have to figure out a way to get around the lava. This would make a "lava sponge" alternative a very great addition too. Maybe even make it related to the biome directly, like adding pumice as a unique resource that generates as surface deposits surrounding the volcanoe biome, suggesting it was ejected from the pits like how it's formed IRL! The specific mechanics of pumice would have to be worked out, maybe you'd have to reinforce it with obsidian before using it to absorb lava an area of lava, and when you break it afterwards it instead drops a single block of the superheated lava you suggested, giving you a way to store lava without it being a 1 to 1 conversion. Just some thoughts, the idea of volcanoes being included in an update about cliffs and caves just makes sense to me!

    • @MinecraftIdeasAcademy
      @MinecraftIdeasAcademy  Před 3 lety +1

      The volcanoes sound cool! Perhaps they could replace surface lava pools to prevent forest fires. I'm still not keen on a lava sponge though - I prefer boomstone cooling lava into blackstone.

    There are actually many precious metals that are biproducts of refining so maybe add a refining process that allows the creation of these metals? For example, platinum is a byproduct of copper and nickel refining though, it isn't always found in other ore. Platinum could be a new metal just below diamond in strength for weapons and armor which can only be obtained by refining copper in addition to it being a conductor of electricity.

    you saying to "make build limit heigher but downwards" and a comment here about deep oceans being really deep makes me excited about exploring these super deep oceans where you need like a diver suit to be able to survive down there and ores being plentifull. with deepsea creatures, dangerous and passive, to make for a fun time exploring.

  • @-ashautumn-9582
    @-ashautumn-9582 Před 3 lety +1

    I have a cool idea: with the new world height oceans could be deeper. You know the deep dark? Yes exactly that, but in the ocean. When you get too close to the "Ocean Abyss" a giant squid-like creature pulls you in with its long togue. The giant squid does the same damage as the warden (only when attacking) in the Abyss the only light sources are bioluminescent plants and potentially glow squids. The abyss is inhabitated by deep ocean fish, glowsquids and the giant squid. The terrain can also be volcanic or deserted in certain areas. And you can find big shipwrecks, fossils and loot.

    Having different smelt times for ores would be a way to change smelting, along with more powerful sources being required to smelt certain higher tier items would be interesting. Imagine using redstone and copper to create a pseudo-electric heat conductor which boosts the vanilla game furnace, allowing for ores such as gold, diamond, emerald, and other higher tier ores to be smelted. That would make more sense, as well as change up the progression from going straight up to diamond after being in the game for 20 minutes.

    • @MinecraftIdeasAcademy
      @MinecraftIdeasAcademy  Před 3 lety +1

      I like the idea to upgrading furnaces like that, but I'm not sure if they should be necessary to smelt higher ores.

    I absolutely love the copper column idea I’ve always wanted a way where I can kind of have my own iron golem preferably one that follows me or patrols a certain area and maybe even It has like five slots in it where I can put a name tag of a player and if that player comes nearby it will attempt to hurt them but doesn’t stray off its path to far. so like you designate a certain area and it can’t go more than 10 blocks away from it or something then it returns.

    6:28 one of my favorite additions a mod has ever added was a coal pen. all it was was a stick and a coal or charcoal, and it allowed you to draw arrows on walls floors and ceilings.
    Super useful for when you have limited torches and are really winding around a cave system.
