- Today on Modern Builds, I'm making a mid-century modern inspired slatted bench constructed with half-lap joinery. The bench can be resized longer to fit more people or can be made wider to be used as a coffee table. If you're planning on building this project, don't forget to check out my written article for materials and plans.

Simplicity - excellent work. I might have a go myself.
Thanks a lot, go for it for sure!
the Nelson bench is a beautiful piece. great work man, especially working with only a couple, easily accessible tools. keep it up dude!
Thanks a lot Chris!
Another great build! I really enjoy how simple and beautiful your designs are.
Thanks a lot man! Much appreciated!!
I love the industrial legs. Awesome project!
Thanks Doug!
Definitely need a coffee table like this, good work!
Right on! Thanks a lot!
I've gotta make one of these!
Nice take on the George Nelson bench! I love that design and your process of making it was really easy and instructive :) I would just suggest to use a harder wood for strength over time.
Definitely, I was a little concerned all the lap joints were going to be harder than they ended up being, so I decided to go with cheaper materials in case it didn't work haha
Oh I see! Now you know it works really well and you can use other species next time :D
Awesome work! My girlfriend and I watch these and get so pumped for the wipe on finishes, we both gasped and went "POLYURETHANE!"
Haha! Right on dude!
Looks great. I have never used my depth stop and must try it.
Thanks a lot! It made for pretty quick joints
That looks great. Going to build one as a house warming gift for family.
That's awesome! Good luck
Now, I get it! Thank you 😃
Really nice piece. Looks store bought. Good one.
Thanks a lot! I appreciate it

I like the design, too. Beautiful work.

It's a ripoff of a George Nielsen Bench.
+Modern Builds Shame on you for not giving credit where it's due.
Awesome work as usual! Definitely gonna have to give this one a try!
Nice, go for it!!
This is awesome Mike! Nice job!
Thanks!!
Awesome Mike !
Thanks a lot!
I've been looking at those very legs to use on an upcoming coffee table build.
Right on! The shape on them is really cool
As usual, awsome work!!! 👍👍👍
Thanks a lot bro!
Great build Mike...I've wanted to build one of these for a long time. Like the legs a lot...keep it up...can't see what's next.

Right on! Thanks a lot man
Nice result! oh the original music! :D
Haha, thanks a lot!
I'm glad the guitar intro returned. That was your personal fingerprint of your videos :)
Sweet! I'll be throwing in the original song from time to time
Just come to Colorado and furnish my house 😍 haha
That looks great! 🤓
Thanks a lot man!
Great video.
Love seeing all your cool projects. Came to your channel via RetroWeld a few weeks ago. Keep up the great work!
Right on, That was a fun project I worked on with RetroWeld
nice design very good look
Thanks dude!
Nice project. If you don't have a table saw and a dado set, this would be another way to cut the dados. A half/cross lap jig would make things even easier. Having done one of these, it seems like a lot could go wrong getting the depth and width just right, but good job Mike for pulling it off. Also, I came here because I was interested in the legs, which look pretty cool. Unfortunately, they are no longer available by Industrial by design... Oh, one more thing. if you're going to make a longer bench (the George Nelson version, of which this is based, comes in three sizes 48/60/72), I'd use something other than pine.
very cool
Thanks man!
good stuff Mike!-i like the way the half laps look from a side view..🖒🖒💥
Thanks Joe!
Modern Builds ALWAYS!👊💥
nice job!
Thanks a lot buddy
Just finished my top up, just alder for the slats and oak for the end and central piece, hoping that its gonna give a nice contrast specially with the finish is applied. Next up is to my buddys press brake to make the legs. Great video and thanks for the inspiration! :-)
Very Cool! Good Luck! I'd love to see a picture when it's finished
+Modern Builds Sure, I'll send you som pics via Instagram :)
I love it !!! Say hi to Brazil!!! 😁🙋
Thanks a lot! HI!
Looks really good ! If you don't mind I think I may steal this design with a twist. I'm thinking about using this dimension-ed up to make a torsion box. Not a fan of MDF and decent ply let alone Hardwoods are very expensive here in Oz. I think using half laps and then some cool legs at the right height would make me a cool work bench or stand up desk. Thanks for the vid and the inspiration.
That's a really cool idea, I'd love to see a picture of it when it's finished!
Good Build Man!
Thanks!!
beautiful bro!
Thanks a lot man!
Very nice man!
Thanks a lot!
yussss, the og theme song is back!
I'll throw it in from time to time!
A headboard in this style would look really good
Yeah, I think it would
I followed your very detailed directions and made this in one day. Thanks and keep posting more. We all appreciate your time to make, instruct and post your projects. 💞🎠😀🎠💞 𝓣𝓱𝓪𝓷𝓴 𝔂𝓸𝓾! 😍
That's so cool! Glad I could help! I'd love to see a picture of it
amazing man ¡¡¡¡ congratulations ¡¡
Thanks a lot man!
yeees i have a big proyect in mexico ¡¡¡ and check your videos is amazing and you are very amazing person , i hope your keep going whit this
Nice!
Thanks!
suh dude! great work again!
Haha! Thanks man
HE BROUGHT BACK THE INTRO MUSICC!!!!!!!
THE POWER THAT IS IN ME HAS BEEN UNLISHED!!!!
jk. tnx for adding it back again :D
Haha, I didn't know the song was so powerful! I'll keep bringing it back periodically
You can also try using a table saw sled next time you have to make cuts like that. I like the creativity though! Keep sendin out this awesome content
Yeah, I plan on building some table saw sleds once I get a bigger cabinet saw
nice!
Thank you!!
I hope you can do a 4 seater outdoor table with a round hole in the middle for a beer bucket or cooler. :D
That's a pretty cool idea!
Wooowwwwww it's turn up super cool bro cheers :-)
Thanks!!
Great video! I've wanted to build the Nelson Bench for some time now.
You should check out Rietveld's "Red Blue Chair" if you are into that style. I'm planning to build one with different wood species to put in my living room. This would be perfect for your channel...
-Vin
Thanks a lot Vinnie! I just checked it out, it's a really cool design. I might give it a try... Without the crazy colors though haha!
+Modern Builds Yeah, the colors are iconic, but definitely over kill, lol. I'm thinking oak, maple, and walnut. It would still look cool in just pine though...
I love this. tackling a bookcase using old closet doors with pallet wood in the background of the shelves. i love your style, modern. btw does the polyurethane weatherproof the wood? still new to this stuff. thanks
That's awesome, thanks. Polyurethane doesn't necessarily make the wood weatherproof, but it protects the wood from stains, water and other abuse.
nice one like allways , can you make a unique bookshelf
I have plans to do one soon!
For the half lap on the side pieces, it may be easier to set up a jig on a router table, similar to a box-joint jig
I definitely would've tried if I had a router table. It would've been quicker haha
I love this bench and yes, I will be trying to make this as a coffee table. I am really interested in building a desk for my tall husband. We can't seem to find one that is big enough to fit not only two monitors but keyboard and mouse. Not to mention his stand up files. He also doesn't want it against a wall. He wants it in the middle of the office. ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE HELPFUL. OR, PERHAPS YOU'D LIKE TO BUILD ONE? Lol. Thank you. You do great work
Thanks a lot! I definitely don't have plans to build a mega desk like that, but it'd be really cool.
lindo!
awesome stuff, man! keep making okies proud! did you just use pine wood? how is the strength of it? would it hold two people?
Right on! Yeah it's just select pine from Home Depot. It's strong. It held two people fine
Could you make a pallet bar? That would be really cool haha
It would be! I've got a design for one in my head, I might tackle that project some time soon
cool hairstyle :)
Thanks dude!
The hole pattern on the legs lines up perfectly with the slats-did they come that way from the manufacturer, or did you have to drill holes in the steel?
It was all coincidence. It was something I though I'd have to "worry about later" but when I went to put them on I was pleasantly surprised that they lined up perfect.
what kind of straight edge are you using here look very handy
if you google a "circular saw clamping straight edge" you''ll get some results
Mike, what's the thickness of the steel legs?
Do you sell a lot of the projects you make on this channel or use them all in your own home? Recently I've kinda been binge-watching all of your videos. 😂 they're super cool!
It's half and half. This one was for me though
I have a Ryobi Chop saw as well and haven't been able to locate a depth gauge like you mention. Can you talk more about that?
To my knowledge they're only on the sliding miter saws, but It'll be right behind the handle/trigger.
Thanks! I was wondering that, but couldn't tell if yours was a sliding miter the way you were using it on this project.
How can I mount the bench to the wall?
is that strong enough, because screwed the iron feet to that that lumber if it gets bulge while sitting on it.
Yep, plenty strong. Held two people fine
Can make an office chair ??
He's so cute 😌
hey Mike, can you do a tutorial on a teak wood shower mat or floor?
That would be cool, I just know there's already a few that have been done on CZcams. I guess if I just come up with an original design that be cool.
+Modern Builds yes! and I've been looking everywhere for a good tutorial video but there all slide shows. plus you make your videos so easy to understand and do. I love your videos and thank you
Thanks! Search wooden doormat, you might be able to find a few.
Can you send me all the sizes that you cut and the size of the wood and the metal ?please thanks
Dado blade, could make this project easier
No doubt
Modern Builds No Dadoubt)
Can we have the next videos, to features all the various furniture you did, around your house?
That's not a bad idea, I might do that sometime soon
Thanks for the reply! You really did a good job! Ever since i watched the dog house until now :D
Another nice project by Mike!!!! Hey did you get my email?
It looks like George Nelson's bench design
That's the inspiration!
+Modern Builds inspiration? It's a straight reproduction.
Modern Builds Jonathan Blair Yeah you should change the title or give credit.
cool project! why did you voiceover the intro? just curious :)
I had a fan running making a lot of noise and didn't realize haha!
oh i see! haha your video production skills are awesome too!
Do you sell your furniture?
How about a office chair
Are you sponsored by Ryoby or did you pick their tools for a specific reason ?
I'm not necessarily sponsored. They don't pay me, they did send me tools to use. Hopefully in the coming months it does turn into a full on sponsorship
Cool,
I was also intrested in their equipment, im looking for a rotating sander and a saw but they aren't that big over here..
Are you sponsored by Ryobi or do you just love their tools?
Both. Haha
I bought a chop saw without a slide and this is why I regret my decision. It basically becomes a mini radial arm saw
Yeah, I can't remember who I saw using it that way, but I had to try it out
Marry me 😵😍
