Making an Epoxy & Concrete Coffee Table

- This episode shows how to make a modern coffee table from epoxy resin and white concrete. I’m calling it the “Arctic Erosion” coffee table. I used thick set epoxy resin with blue epoxy pigment, and a white GFRC concrete mix with white concrete pigment, to make this modern coffee table. Some have pointed out the concrete & epoxy coffee table somewhat resembles a Minecraft lake, although any resemblance is unintentional :)
I’m really happy how this table came out - the epoxy and white concrete both shine, and the design is probably my favorite thing I’ve made to date.
I think it is important when sharing designs, to give credit to other designers who inspired you. The design of this concrete and epoxy table was heavily inspired by Brandon Gore’s concrete erosion sink, and the art work of Ben Young. Since I don’t sell my work, Brandon would likely be the person to contact if you would like to buy a custom table that is similar to this. Here are links to both those folks - I highly suggest checking them out. They inspired me, and will likely inspire you too!

Me: Revising for an exam
YT: Care to watch a 19 min 42 sec vid about making coffee tables?
Me: Yeah sure
We all need a break every once in a while ;) good luck on the exam - you got it!
Jonathan Lee 😂😂😂😂😂 that was awesome 😂😂😂 I’ve been there!
How'd you do on the exam?
Excellent Video clip! Sorry for butting in, I am interested in your initial thoughts. Have you thought about - Rozardner Easy Food Reality (do a search on google)? It is a great one off guide for learning the trick to build great sheds and master woodworking without the headache. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my cousin after many years got amazing results with it.
After watching the video advert i was still skeptical. But when i finally downloaded the plans czcams.com/users/postUgkxZF0EMnrujZvqHhGkxiz559uIABJWR9TG i was very impressed. The whole plan was just as you said in the video. Thank you very much. I now have a large and valuable collection for my woodworks. This is great!
Looks like a Minecraft river Chunk! Epic.
Thanks!
So glad i wasn’t the only one who thought that!
Modustrial Maker A full Minecraft themed table would be really cool, imo 🙂
Omg a Minecraft table would be dope. I’ve never played Minecraft btw, I just watch a lot of those YT videos of Minecraft geniuses
Chunks glitch
Imagine noticing a hair floating in that after it's all finished
LOL, no hairs, but true story, there was a fly at the top of the epoxy I had to chisel out and patch
Modustrial Maker oh wow lol
Toxic Killer not really he easily fixed it
@@modustrial thats even worse😄
haha
"Honey, could you please move the 'coffee table,' so I can vacuum?"
"Sure, let me bring in the fork lift."
Lol, it's not too bad ... About 200 lbs.
More like, "Honey, can you move the coffee table so I can vacuum?
"No".
"ne'ermind.... the Roomba got it."
ha! :)
@@modustrial why is it so small?
You would have to be 1' tall to use this!
That looks like a snowy minecraft river if you know what i mean
He should do a jungle biom next

This is not my main source of income... I'm a patent attorney. CZcams is just night and weekends at this point 😀
I wish you put a question mark after this.
Every time I think I’m good at creating unique ideas that add character to projects, I tune into something like this and realize I don’t belong on the same playing field. This table is amazing, so high end.
Man.... You can be proud on this build. I have learned a lot on the way you made this table. You have a creative mind my friend! Keep up the good work!
Thank you! I learned a ton while making this one, so I'm happy to share!
Wow, way to stick with it. This project seemed to be heading south so many times but you made it work.
Incredibly well done.
Thanks Big Mike! sometimes when you have an idea you want to make a reality, it just keeps you going :)
If the wood base is small enough, it may avoid people from hitting their toe against it
Should've put some little deep sea diver figures in there.
That would be so clean
maybe some orcas or like narwhals
@@Byefel38 what is a 'like narwhal'?
@Caleb Edwards even better
@Caleb Edwards or the polar bear using the penguin as a dildo?
I appreciate creators that show their mistakes. Helps us all learn. Thank you!
Thanks Jon! I always try to share my mistakes so others can learn from them :)
I watched this video after coming across the building reno series. This turned into a trip back in time as soon as I saw the missing beard 🧔
Athan Alexander haha Same!
Same
Modern, stylish, simplistic. I want one.
Thanks Alex!
Nice coffee table. How about a light set in the bottom? And round recesses for cups (like car cup holders).
Good ideas!
MrBLUEDEVILUK ☝️
Another good idea!
if that was mine, I'd put a thin clear piece of plexiglass over it so if anything spilled, it wouldn't touch the table itself.
Plexiglass would definitely help protect it!
Great video, like that you go into detail about your processes and show any problems that you run into.
Thanks Mark!
Nice and light for when I rearrange my living room.
WOW!!! It looks amazing! One thing I like doing to "lose" the legs/base, making the table appear to float, is paint the base flat black.
I gotta say i appreciate the little learning experience being kept in and not edited out. It makes me feel better about being new to building stuff when someone with experience slips up a little
Thanks Renz! Every project is a learning experience, and the fixing mistakes is usually where you learn the most. so I always try to share my mistakes so others can learn from them :)
Game over, Mike wins the epoxy table build contest.
Lol, thanks much. So what do I win? 🤣🤣 🏆
@@modustrial Who said anything about a prize?
🤣
If it has some lights it will be amazing.
Seeing the finished product brought a tear to my eye...
this makes it onto my top 5 list of the coolest and most interesting coffee tables I have ever observed in my 47 years. neat!
Thank you! Thats a huge compliment :)
That was an excellent episode of "Caulk Talk"! :D Neat table!
Thanks much!
If you ever move, I feel sorry for anyone that volunteers to help, sooo much concrete in that house! 😀 Great video, really awesome result!
Ha thanks! It has been jokingly said I'm building a concrete palace, lol... At least gfrc is lighter than normal concrete 😀
It's not just a furniture, it's a piece of art!
Thank you!
I like that you include your 'learning experiences' in your videos; makes them much more palatable to watch, IMO. Table looks amazing!
Lovin’ how you incorporated so many advanced skills that you’ve been practicing all into one amazing looking coffee table. If you keep making, I’ll keep watching! Thanks for doing what you do Mike!
Thanks for the kind words Nate!
*does a jackman style caulk removal*
jackman: wait. that’s illegal
Patience of a saint, first the sawstop and 2nd the bondo putty snafu, nice table
Appreciate you including all mistakes made, that is honestly where the most value is in these kind of videos
Of course!
I was watching this one closely on your instagram waiting for you to release the video. It’s amazing, great work as always.

A table with topography...how simultaneously avant garde and pastiche. Hats off to you, chap.
Thanks Zachary!
I am just mesmerised by how amazing this was gosh i wish i could do this , really well done !
Thank you!
1:37 Thought the piece was going to get twisted between the blade and the fence, and get thrown with enough force to punch a hole in the wall.
and it didn't ;) that said, safety dictates it isn't worth the risk... will move the fence in the future when using the crosscut sled.
i actually didn’t regret clicking on a video at 3am in the morning for once, wow!
😁😁
That's One of The Most beautiful Table I've ever seen.❤️
To me it looks like a Valley in Glacier i.e. Origin of a river....
Thank you!
Looks amazing Mike! 😍👌🏻 Awesome job! 👍🏻👊🏻
Thanks Fred! 👊
1:36 made me scared. You should be happy your sawstop emergency stoped. Please never ever use a paralel guide while crosscutting, the board between the paralel guide and the blade isn't secure and if it jams it is going to fly.
Nice build for the rest!! Good use of all techniques.
I thought the same thing, especially because he was pushing the off-cut with the push stick.
Please help us noobs understand so we don't die. So when crosscutting against the grain of wood, you should do it by hand? Or?
The thing I did wrong was using the fence in conjunction with a cross-cut sled...as I've now learned, this is a big no-no. Using the sled is fine, as long as the piece you are cross-cutting isn't riding the fence as you cut it.
you can use the paralel guide ofc, but it HAVE TO end right before you enter the saw, so you cant get stucked. and ofc... dont push on both sides, since it will get stucked again...
i just wonder how it comes somebody got a nice table saw in his shop and has no clue how to use it /facepalm
Just found this channel and I must say; the subscription process was quick.
Thank you! 🙏
The depth of the blue epoxy is mesmerizing!
Thanks Dwight!
7:13
"see how it leaves a little thin layer on there?"
"alghfh"
Huh?
And then 7:23 the same noise
Vacuums the dissolved gasses out then pours the epoxy into the mold like it's water.
exactly what i was thinking lmao, whats the point to vacuum if you're gonna pour a thin stream from 3ft in the air.
Ya that was a waste of time in my opinion
Mumbo and Grian are SWEATING over that concrete
I call myself a jack of all trade.. I'm a fan of ur work. I hope to check out more of ur work... We live and we learn. Keep up the good work.
One day, when im feeling energetic, ill make this i swear it

Doing this with a depth map of lake michigan would have been pretty cool.
Wow. Amazing!! Real river in table
Thank you!
Love this build, but my first thought is... when the table is turned upside down to insert the foam it would be cool to add a couple small tube inserts at the highest/deepest part of the epoxy sections which would, after applying the concrete, leave small open cavities to insert a couple small LED lights which, when inverted would light the epoxy from the depths.
Thanks! I actually made some 3D printed LED modules to do exactly what you suggest, but the build was already so complicated I decided not to push it this time. Of course that just means I'll have to do a sequel to this 😉
Couldn’t he have just taped the crack
Packing tape sticks great!
When I saw this table it immediately reminded me of the iceberg they found captain America stuck in. I would have had to add a captain America figurine. 🤓🤓. This video alone has made me subscribe.
Thanks Tiffany! I'm a huge Marvel fan, so I'll have to rewatch that scene of Captain America!
That was a spiritual experience.
thanks! glad you enjoyed it :)
Great work! And thank you for showing that not everything goes right but it can still be saved. It's helpful when working on projects to remember that even top craftsmen and big projects hit snags and still make it through.
Thanks!
I love some of the random things YT recommends. Beautiful table. If you wanna ship to the uk I will take it off your hands....
No?
Ok, don't blame you 🤣
Absolutely great. I wonder how the epoxy would look like with an LED lighting in it...
Thanks much! I actually have 3D printed LED modules that I was intending to embed in the concrete to shine up through the epoxy. however, the build was already getting really complex and I decided to play it a little bit safe and leave the LEDs out this time. It's a pretty safe bet that you'll see some led up lighting through epoxy in some sort of future project that is derivative from this 😀
@@modustrial I'm pretty much excited to see this project documented in another upload! Thanks for the great content.
@@modustrial That is such a beautiful classy look, please don''t put lights in it. It would detract from the clean lines, and sometimes can look "trashy".

The drooling old cat was my favorite part of this video.

Was that the Sawstop that kicked the blade down?
Man I jumped a mile!
Yup! It's scary when it happens , like a gunshot.... I did embellish a bit by adding some shake to the video :)
Wow! Such workmanship!

"Build a table out of concrete." How much does it weigh?
I discussed this the video. About 200 lbs
To have this as a hobby given the tools he has i.e software and the cutting machine is another level. Best I got is a saw, hammer and drill
Surely this is going to be a FT job soon
I dig projects like this.
Thanks much!
Beautiful table..!
I think I'd like to see some experimentation with some fiberoptics, for lights that could be inserted through the bottom of the epoxy to provide another layer of interest for projects like this one.
I've been thinking about building a shower with walls made from epoxy. And use fiberoptic lights to make it look like a star scape in the dark blue walls.

Thanks Jaani!
I really like this! It needs a shipwreck at the bottom or a narwhale swimming through. 😁
Kidding. It's perfect the way it is.

Thank you!
I know other people have mentioned about adding whales and things and I don’t know if you’ve seen the videos of artists painting 3D fish using thin layers of resin, on a project this big it would probably take painstakingly long between the layers curing but imagine the finished effect, either way it’s absolutely stunning
