- Outdoor Bench || Modern Outdoor Furniture || Plans Available …In this video, I build an outdoor bench with a modern flare for our back patio. We desperately needed some outdoor bench seating for all the guests that we never have. LOL. Sapele Mahogany works great for outdoor furniture because of it’s rot and weather resistant properties and that it doesn’t require a finish. However, I did decide to apply a finish on this outdoor bench and sprayed several coats of Total Boat’s Halcyon waterborne finish on this - 3 coats of Gloss and 2 coats of Satin. Plans are available using the link below if you are interested in building your own outdoor bench to add to your modern outdoor furniture or keep it inside in your mudroom! #outdoorbench #kjsawdust #outdoorfurniture

"Crack'em open like a couple of frozen hamburgers"
I see that you, too, have endured the struggle... brother.
😂😆 the frozen pucked meat struggle is real!
But all pain is forgotten when you slather on the Astra coating right Keith?
@@andrhamm But of course! LOL.
lol Man I chuckled myself. thats what I had for dinner the night I watched this
I haven't finished the video yet... I just had to stop and say thank you so much for including your cost and Board Footage for this build. If only more woodworkers would do such things.
you're welcome! Sometimes I forget how much things actually cost until I add it all up!
Strongly agree - Thank you!
@@jghartje You got it! Will definitely try to do this on all projects when possible.
I agree with this entirely.
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking - I believe you are the only U Tuber that has the Integrety to list the cost of materials. Like we couldn’t figure it out anyway. But, it’s much appreciated!
More Jerry and Lola! Gorgeous bench, Keith.
Check out my latest video…they are front and center 😹 czcams.com/video/6MoneD1p53g/video.html
So this podcast of yours is the Seinfeld of podcasts.
Giddy up!!
Every time you said "notches" I replied "buenos noches" and went to sleep. I didn't. But it amused me.
😂😹 I'm dying. That's hilarious. Glad I could impart a giggle or two.
It’s so perfect its like you hooked Sketchup to a wood printer
😂😜 Now wouldn't that be something!! Thanks Andrew!
I make outdoor furniature. Benches, arbors, planters etc... So these videos always get my full attention, That being said, It's time to watch!
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
"Like a couple of frozen hamburgers" really got me for some reason
😂 😜
You my friend are by far the best woodworking youtuber out there. But I'm no one important so you can decide how much value to give this compliment.
Either way, keep up the great content and videos.
Wow, thank you!! And I DO appreciate that! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. 🙏👊
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking I think you and Jason need to have a woodworking cage fight!
Outstanding. Thank you
You're very welcome! Thanks for watching!
Always inspiring. Thanks
Thank you! 🙏🏻

Thanks very much!
Always a pleasure watching your videos 👍👍
So nice of you! Thanks for watching!
Gorgeous!!!
Thank you Ted! Cheers!
Can't wait for the best woodworking volume 2!!
Oh right! I need to get on that! Thanks for the reminder 👍
Beautiful project! Loved the explanation and clarity of the sled you made to nail these dados. So simple but completes the task perfectly!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for the feedback, Luke!
Love how it looks
Thanks Olivier! I greatly appreciate it 🙏 👍
Simple yet beautiful.
Thank you! 😊
That is beautiful!
Thank you! Cheers!
Looks really good!
Thanks very much, Alexander!! 👍
i bet most ppl wont do all that notching but simply spaced them apart & screw it together , its what sets you apart , a nice "simple" project that looks great ... i like seeing sleepy heads jerry & lola
Thanks man! It could certainly be done that way if people would prefer that method. I would just make the slats and stretcher thinner to maintain proportion. It wouldn't be as strong, but would be easier and still functional. 👍
Beautiful work!
Thank you so much, Jeff!! 😀👊
Keith you are the modern age Norm Abram........ but waaaaaaaaaaaay funnier!!!! Love the videos
Dang!! Thanks Rodney! I appreciate the kind words 🙌🏻
Yet, another fine video!!!! Love the work you do, it's very inspirational!!!
Thank you so much 😀
Thank you so much 😀
Great video Keith 👍
Thanks very much!! 👍
Great job as always

Excellent! Brilliant! Very im ... "bench-press" ... ive!
Keep 'er lit Bro!
😂😜 Thanks Ivan!!
Beautiful!
Thanks so much, Jill! 😊🙌
Marvelous
Thanks very much!
This looks Amazing!
Thanks Joel !!
So glad you put a clear coat on that. I never understood the preference for natural weathering turning that lovely material silvery.
I like the weathered gray look...and putting a finish on just guarantees annual maintenance of freshening up the finish. 😜
Beautiful bench!
Thank you!!
Beautiful piece
Thank you! Cheers!
Everything you build is amazing

Beautiful work

@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking I’ve heard Sepele weathers nicely, silvering (a bit like Cedar?) ..
@@Brad-cq5wr Yes, that's correct!!
Beautiful Craftsmanship

Looks great man.
Thank you! Cheers!
Perfection! Jerry's expression is like, "What do you want Keith?" Cuteness overload for sure! Nice entryway bench, or the bedroom...too awesome for outdoors (wouldn't want birds crapping on that beauty!) Thanks also for Jerry in action and Lola too of course!
Thanks so much! 😊And yes, Jerry certainly has his moods...that's why we call him Ol Grizz because he can be as grumpy as an old grizzly bear 😂
NICE!!!!!
Thanks!!
That is a VERY attractive build. I love chunky furniture. It seems like it will last longer than thinner things. (I'm a 290lb man, I like things that look like they can support me both emotionally AND physically)
😂 I think this one is plenty strong to support a couple of linebackers. I'm more concerned about the local birds pooping all over it.
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking 🤣always a nuisance.
I can't wait to get back to woodworking, I miss it so much! Great video KJ and beautiful bench kind sir! I love the fact that you took so much time to make sure that even your outdoor furniture is flawless. Perfection is only achieved by those who strive to achieve it.....and you achieve it on every project you share with us. Thanks KJ.

Grazie! 🙏🙏🙏

Freakin gorgeous. Going to need to bookmark this design for when I’m ready to make some outdoor benches.
Awesome! Thanks Matthew! 👊🏻
Hi Keith just found your channel (after watching some alcoholic moth guy) any woodworker that has a cat wandering through their workshop is an automatic sub for me. It also helps when he/she/they have some great content. Now I have to do some binge watching. 👍 😎
😂That's awesome man! Thanks for stumbling over here. 😜I really appreciate the sub and hope you enjoy the content!
Outstanding work! Loved your design and execution.
Thank you! Cheers!
Beautiful work once again! Used to spray paint in a guitar workshop a lot … makes me think that spraying in between the slats is some serious skill! Well done, looks really lovely :)
Thanks Sebastian! I was able to adjust the nozzle to be more localized pattern so I could get in those slats, but any smaller of a gap and it would have been a bit of a struggle 😂
love seeing every video you make
you are a master at your craft
as a DIY woodworker, i can appreciate the extra steps you take to properly do things and how precise you are
i also love seeing you use the tools i wish i had LOL
Thanks so much!! That’s very kind 🙏🏻👍🏻
Beautiful work as always my friend. Really dug the sled you built for that. Awesome.
Thanks so much! Hopefully I will be able to use it on another project and won't just sit in the barn like some other one trick ponies I've made. 👍
Keith i love the design and joinery. Thanks for another great video.
Thanks man! Glad you dig it! I appreciate the comment 👍🏻
Loved the forearm shot XD
😂 Gotta embrace it!! 😜
Great design, great video. A home run, Keith. Interested in how the finish holds up over time. Looks like quality stuff. Beautiful work, friend!
Thanks Kev!! 👍 And thanks for watching! I'm interested in the longevity of the finish as well. But let's be honest, even if it doesn't hold up, I'm unlikely to refinish it. 😬😂
Excellent work, again. - finally in this video I figured out who your voice reminded me of. Bet you could do a great Kevin McDonald impersonation.
I'd say thanks, but I have no idea who that is! 😂
He voiced Pleakly in Lilo and Stitch, and I believe he was in Kids in the Hall. 😂
Great work Keith you make it look so easy and efficient !! I may have to make one of those myself
Thanks Roger!! I really appreciate it. And I encourage you to give it a go!
Great video Keith! Love this. So skilled.
Thanks Nick! Much appreciated dude 👊
"Like a couple of frozen hamburgers" hahaha I love your videos man, so glad your uploading more content, keep it up! Much love from Mexico city!
Glad you like them! More content on the way!
Great job! Bench looks awesome and will probably last two lifetimes! ☺️
Thank you sir!! Let's see what Mother Nature has to say about that 😜😂
Waw that’s a bench
Thanks! 🤙🏻😎
I think this is a great skill-builder project: measuring, set-up, repeating your cuts. And I love the finished project. And having done it once you could modify the dimensions to make small tables or stools. Great plan!
Thank you very much, Karen! And you are absolutely right about being able to scale it up or alter for other pieces of furniture as well. Great thinking!
Aww... mate! the amount of guitars I could make with that sapele...
It would be one, but a very good one.
😂 Sounds like one large guitar!!
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking Ok, maybe two, but there’s a lot of wood waste making guitars. Not saying my video skills are nearly as good as yours but if you have a moment to check mine making an all maple guitar I’d really appreciate it.
Nice Work :)
Thank you! Cheers!

This was one of your ‘simpler’ projects, but man it was still beautiful and detailed! Probably my favorite video yet!
Very cool!! Thanks very much! It took just about 3 days, so one of my quickest builds, too 😜

Such exquisite work, as always! You had me rolling with your frozen burger patty analogy. 😅
😂 Thanks man! Brought back some childhood memories with that one! 😜
_"Some serious alliteration"_ haha

HeyWild Man, Love this build! Nice design. Thanks for the advice on the finish! Are you old enough to remember “The Halcyon Blues”?
Thanks MJ!! Halcyon Blues? Hmmm....either I'm not old enough or my memory is that bad. 😂
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking Well if you took any Halcyon you might not remember!
Nice!! I might add Sapele to my to-do list for a shower bench Idea I have, I'm currently building a house and will have a decent-sized shower to have one in. I'll have to consider grabbing your plan as well.
Awesome! Thanks! And congrats on the new house!!
1 minute into your video and i subscribed. I love the fact you gave exact pricing on the wood. Most say they got it for free or "found it ".
Awesome! Thank you! And I appreciate the feedback on the pricing. It seems to be quite a popular feature 😂
You always have nice designs, and good construction explanations, and no silly arty dolly shots eith the camera or dumb music, which somehow despite Casey Neistat using it seven years sgo, they still think it's relevent. Interesting cost between hard and softwoods is narrowing. It's all expensive but hardwood compsrstively less.
Thanks so much! I greatly appreciate the feedback. Sometimes I wish my footage was more cinematic and then I realize that's a lot more work for little reward 😜. Thanks for your support!
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking Substance over style here
@@planespeaking That's a nice way to put it! Thanks!
Beautiful bench. Any chance you could do a follow up video later on that shows how well that Sapele Mahogany holds up in the weather? I'm really curious how it wears.
Thanks! Well, I’m guessing it will need at least a full year of going through the seasons before any noticeable wear takes place. But feel free to remind me next summer to see how it’s holding up!
Hi Keith, nice video! And a quick reminder for the question how the Sapele Mahogany wears. I am curious too.
Great video! Do you think this project could withstand the Arizona sun, heat, dry, switch to monsoon rain, humidity . . . rinse, repeat?
I think so! Sapele mahogany is rot resistant, so shouldn't be any issue there. However, with the intense weather, any finish applied will most likely need to be refreshed every 1-2 years.
