Destiny marches inexorably toward the Ninth Doctor in a blistering box-set of full-cast audio adventures, released today by Big Finish Productions.
“The Doctor is a legend woven throughout history. When disaster comes, he's there. He brings the storm in his wake and he has one constant companion. Death.”
As the epic first series of The Ninth Doctor Adventures draws to a close, the Time Lord faces ghosts from the past and the future in two exciting, brand-new adventures.
In Fond Farewell, the deceased attend their own funeral, while in the two-part finale, Way of the Burryman/The Forth Generation, the dead come back to life in the form of terrifying, reanimated Cybermen.
Luckily, the Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) isn’t alone. He reunites with his old friend Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart (Jon Culshaw) and Lieutenant Sam Bishop (Warren Brown) to tackle the emerging threat. But at what cost? Fate has drawn them together, in this one place and time, and not everyone will make it through the final fight intact.
Travelling the universe alone, the Doctor can’t help running into people he has met before. Some are new acquaintances, and some have a much longer history, back through all of his lives. But every one of them knows that in the face of danger, and when the monsters arrive, there’s no better friend to have by their side.
The three action-packed episodes in this box set are:
Fond Farewell by David K Barnes
Fond Farewell is the intergalactic funeral parlour with a difference: the deceased attend their own wake!
Invited by celebrated naturalist Flynn Beckett to his memorial, the Doctor finds he’s not quite the man he was. But who would steal the memories of the dead?
Way of the Burryman by Roy Gill
Young Sam Bishop is at a crossroads with girlfriend Fiona: she’s staying in Scotland and he wants to travel the world.
As the Burryman celebrations begin, ghosts haunt the Forth Bridge. Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart arrives to investigate - and so does the Doctor...
The Forth Generation by Roy Gill
The Forth Generation have emerged. The Doctor, the Brigadier, Sam and Fiona are at their mercy.
Is there a way to defeat them? Has UNIT learned from the past? And can the enemy’s nature be changed for the future?
Joining the adventures are Juliet Stevenson (as Winifred Whitby), Sienna Guillory (as Idara Beckett) and Elinor Lawless (as Fiona). And the stellar cast is completed by James Doherty (Professor Flynn Becket), Emily Taaffe (Sasha Yan), Charlie Hamblett (Thomas), Amanda Drew (Commander Jane Wardie), Martin Quinn (Cameron Lawther), Alexander Cobb (Sergeant Lowe) and Nicholas Briggs as the voice of the Cybermen.
Christopher Eccleston said: “I remember the Cybermen well and the strange beauty of them was fascinating to me as a child. I suppose what I was responding to was the idea that these things were in some sense human. The Doctor’s fascination - and the debate in Doctor Who - is ‘What it is to be human?’ and, to me, the answer is: to be empathetic.
“I’ve had a great time being creative with the Ninth Doctor in these audio adventures - it’s a character that I’ve always loved so much - and interacting with all of these great and imaginative writers.”
“It’s also been quite freeing not having a companion. I like the loneliness of the Doctor and it was one of the things that drew me to him in the first place. I never want him getting too domesticated. I like his solitary lone-wolf quality.”
Director Helen Goldwyn added: “The Way of the Burryman and Forth Generation is a two-parter by the fabulous Roy Gill. It has his usual depth, complexity and atmosphere. It’s an origin story for Sam and I was delighted when I realised we were finally understanding how he came to UNIT and why he’s such a maverick.
“It’s been such a genuine privilege to work with Christopher Eccleston and a joy to have been asked to be involved. The energy when Christopher is playing the Doctor is just so high and fun. I’ve laughed so much when recording these sessions with him. I just hope that people will be delighted, enthralled and love hearing the Ninth Doctor again.” - Zábava
Nice that they mention a planet and a spaceship as potential origins for the Cybermen, acknowledging that World Enough and Time and Spare Parts don't necessarily contradict each other with their Cyberman genesis stories (parallel evolution and all that)
In the two parter with 12 and Bill, the Doctor does mention that there are many origin stories for the Cybermen, implying they're all canon in their own way (even the Marinus/Voord Cybermen).
Moffat made it explicit that there is no contradiction, necessary or otherwise, with "Spare Parts". The Cybermen in the spaceship are clearly not how Cybermen originated in Mondas (which is shown in "Spare Parts"). The Spaceship Cybermen are trapped there and already "evolved" into Moffat-era Cybermen - clearly they have nothing to do with the Mondasian Cybermen in "The Tenth Planet".
Ironically, 12's explanation, attempting to make ALL Cybermen origins compatible, was actually unnecessary (it only really helped Morrison's Voord Cybermen from Planet 14/Marinus/Mondas) and actually contradicted "Attack of the Cybermen" by suggesting the Cybermen in Telos originated there. That said, it did give the War Master story "The Sky Man" an even darker and more disturbing subtext.
@@edwinsoto6932 I always considered the beings in The Sky Men to be a form of Cybermen anyway, even if not stated explicitly. As for the Telosian Cybermen, it can still work, with there being Mondasian Cybermen there as well as Telosian ones from another era.
Also just acknowledges the Cybus origin as being valid. Because, ya know. Alien planet, Spaceship, Parallel Universe Earth. No matter where, if there are humans, Cybermen will always spring up.
@@edwinsoto6932It was necessary because we still have to deal with Is the parallel cyberman
I love that the title refers to both the Brigadier AND the Cybermen!
The scene in Dalek when he called the Cyber head an "old friend" stuck with me, and gave the classic era such a mysterious aura when I was a kid!
A shockingly fantastic trailer to close the first series of 9DA. (How did I not see the Cybermen coming?) And by the way, Happy Birthday to Christopher Eccleston!
These box sets have been phenomenal & dare I say Chris performances have been better than his season on Tv as these audios focus more on The Ninth Doctor.
Excellent work Big Finish.
I KNEW IT! After the hints about “letting them come forth” in Monsters in Metropolis, it had to be them in the finale.
Oh good lord, I just got the pun in there, given where the finale is set!
@@EdSigma RIGHT! bit of fun word play and foreshadowing. Feels like something Davies would have done back in 2005. So hyped!
As a fan of the Cybermen, they’re my favourite characters in the show, this was just beautiful! Glad to hear the Cybermen are facing the Ninth Doctor again, now time to listen to Monster in Metropolis.
Their my favorite monster too
Seeing all the different versions like this is brilliant. Very well done.
Hearing the music match up with the footsteps of the Cybus Cybermen was just the icing on the cake. Bravo.
As a Cyberman fan, this might just be the best DW trailer EVER!
"Run... the Cybermen are coming..."
BigFinish, you've outdone yourselves once again. I don't often pre-order things, but I've been consistently pre-ordering this entire range. The quality of your Ninth Doctor Adventures is absolutely top tier.
Now all we need is Nine and River Song to meet, and I will happily bankrupt myself buying your content (he says like that's not the case already) XD
I originally expected a 9/River story in this set, based off the name and the way Big Finish do a lot of River Song stuff, but there's always Series 2.
River Song is an obnoxious character...
What a fantastic celebration of Cyber history set to Howard Carter's fantastic Cyberman theme. Cannot wait to listen to this!
What a brilliant trailer! Love the Cybermen, I've really enjoyed Christopher back as The Doctor. Looking forward to Old Friends another volume to add to my collection!
Big Finish trailers are the best trailers. Full stop.
Waking up amd seeing this I’m like ooooo only thought there would be the only cyberman story from lost warriors but I’m glad I preordered this boxset too and love the season 10 version of the mondasion cybermen
"Run... The Cybermen are coming..."
Those words gave me chills, no denying that.
And then the hand stretching out towards the screen...gave me shivers!
These trailers get better and better
That's a surprise! I thought the Cybermen were only in the 3rd volume of this series. 😮
That music though. Last night, the night before release, I kid you not, I had a childhood nightmare about Army of Ghosts. Having to avoid being captured and killed by the Cybermen. Next day, this comes out. I'm not saying I'm psychic but I'd give that woman on Shan Shen a run for her money haha
Fantastic.
so unreal video-work, all the best~🤚
Fantastic! Top work all round.
Brig and 9, with modern Unit.
Really been looking forward to this one!
Absolutely amazing trailer. This revelation has really boosted my excitement for listening to this set.
Nice to see where the new Cyberman design comes into the time line. I'm sure it's mentioned in its debut story but it's kinda difficult to find out when you look at the prices of Big Finish nowadays. Looking forward to see where this goes tho. Happy Birthday Chris! 💙
Ninth meets the Brig?? Did I see that? Ohh, take my money please Big Finish.
Oh my 👀
Considering we knew the Brigadier was returning for this boxset, if I didn't already know Jon Culshaw was voicing him, I'd have been worried that this trailer was going down the CyberBrig route.
That was just beautiful!!
The Cybermen are my favourite Enemies in Dr Who
What a trailer the cybermen look absolutely beautiful
Awesome trailer, the music is spectacular! Can't wait to listen to this story :)
Having heard it, I recommend it... highly.
5 star trailer!
Please Big Finish, release 3D CGI models of the _Monsters in Metropolis_ Cyberman! (I know of the artist who did these concepts - he’s on Twitter - but I temporarily forgot his name!)
Edit - his name is Chris Thompson.
LET’S GOOO!!!
Eccleston!?!? Doing the Doctor again!?? What dollars must do.
😂
Fingers crossed. Either series 2 or series 3 of The Ninth Doctor Adventures will include Rosé Tyler
no it wont Eccleston does not want to revisit the tv series characters
We did get an announcement of a continuation of Rose's spin-off on Monday, but apparently a lot ot these will be set either before Rose or during his little blip before the Doctor mentioned the TARDIS travels in time.
@@toast99bubbles only time will tell. It always does
@@benmiller3252 Personally I think it would be nice to have. The NSAs woth 9 and Rose were fun and I'd like some of that fun again.
@@toast99bubbles let's not Lose a lot of hope
What a fantastic trailer
We're still waiting for an explanation of how the head of the Cyberman ended up Henry van statten's museum
I think that head was intended to be a leftover from the events of The Invasion, although they used the Revenge of the Cybermen design which complicates it a bit
My thoughts were it was either from The Invasion, or a remnant of the Time War, like the Dalek. Could be related to the head UNIT had leftover from The Invasion though.
I wish I could listen to these, I absolutely adore Doctor Who, but I don’t have the money to listen to them, but this one seems fun
Yes it is the Audio Books are great
Better than The Flux, guaranteed!
Didn't see the Wheel in Space Cyberman design. Wonder if they forgot? Still, nice trailer nonetheless.
If we're separating the Wheel in Space Cybermen from the Moonbase ones, then we should separate the Tomb of the Cybermen ones too - and they aren't here either.
@@edwinsoto6932 It was just an observation. Moonbase and Tomb were the same design, Wheel were different. Perhaps not different enough for the purposes of the trailer.
@@forkinhell3545 I wasn't criticizing you or anything. I was adding to your comment that the WIS Cybermen weren't alone in their absence.
My point is that "The Moonbase" and "Tomb of the Cybermen" designs aren't the same. You can search a side-by-side comparison, and see the differences. But, as you say, probably, neither the TOTC or the WIS versions were different enough from TM ones to feature in the trailer.
@@edwinsoto6932 No worries. Take care.
Cool trailer....but the new tagline is sickening
What new tagline?
@@ACtheLegend Big Finish...For the Love of Stories.
This box was really good with multiple twists in the plot. However I can only give it a 9 out if 10. The character of the Brigadier just didn't seem right and didn't quite gel with the rest of the characters.
9 never met the Cybermen. It's made very obvious in Dalek. Stop shitting on continuity
L
he says it's an old enemy of his but he never says it's been a long time since he's seen one. even if he had just come out of a regeneration in "Rose", he would've seen them fairly recently anyway.
you're boring
“Oh look, it’s a Cyberman head. I have never met these monsters in my current incarnation, and I likely never will.”
Is this how you remember the scene from Dalek?
