The fact he honestly admits on an official Q&A that he came back for the money to support his family, without sugar-coating it with fancy marketing speeches about undying love for Dr Who, goes to show just how real Eccleston is. He's a professional actor through and through, and a magnificent one at that. We're spoiled to have him back.

It's the basics of capitalism. I hate how much capitalism is almost viewed as a sin. You work for $$$. There are a few exceptions like Leno who is well known for working for minimum pay just to have something fun to do, like be a pace car driver

Im probably the minority here, but the fact his main reason for not coming back to the show was money, make me like him so much less. in 2020 I can understand it, but thats no reason to skip out on the 50th back in 2013. He then goes on to say the writing was another big part of his decision, and that just feels like a cop out to me. For years it was "Oh i dont like to bathe in the river twice" line, and now your suddenly ok with it? oh right...money. Day of the Doctor was an amazing episode, and I refuse to believe he chose not to reprise his role because of the quality of the script. A part of me will never forgive him for biting his thumb at the fans, when we wanted him back the most.
I like seeing Christopher happy, it makes me happy.
Indeed, I prefer him to be happy rather than him being disappointed with the state of parks, which in fairness I do not blame him.

Eccelston gives off british Harrison Ford vibes in the best way. Endlessly professional but never feels the need to fake his interest of a role outside of it being his job that he gets paid to do. Not every actor involved in a production also has to be a massive fan of said work. He's in it for the joy of acting in great stories and that's fantastic.
I think âBritish Harrison Fordâ perfectly sums up him.
You know its funny when he admitted he did it for the money my mind went straight to Harrison Ford and his honestly about Star Wars, its good they dont feel the need to pay a load of lip service fakery to why they pick a project, some jobs are for the pay cheque but he still backed that up by saying he liked the scripts so it wasnt just about the money.

Not gonna lie, the fact he admitted that it's only for the money and not out of any sort of genuine interest in revisiting the character just ruins the hype for me. No, not every actor involved in a production has to be a massive fan, but for something like Doctor Who it helps tremendously to have professionals involved who also happen to be fans, both on screen and on the page.
Big Finish does fantastic writing but now that I know Christopher Eccleston's only back for the money, if I listen to these audios all the bits where his Doctor is meant to be sounding elated about something and energetic are just going to strike me as forced and insincere now. Kind of takes the joy out of it.

Eccleston is a class act through and through. Not many actors nowadays can say 'I am an actor, it's my job, I do it for money' and not feel embarrassed. Huge respect for him, you could even say he's...fantastic.

I mean, people don't really get into acting for the money, but it's absolutely needed, like there are safer career choices to go for, but acting is the "if I'm going to work, I'm going to do something I'm passionate and enjoy", the job.

@@chanceneck8072 Unexperienced? Trying it will get you experience, not sitting around, everyone starts at some time, Michael Kane started in his 50's or something, he's an oscar winner. The older you get, the more you'll worry about that, so just jump into it now.
Scared? I mean everyone gets nervous, but you get used to it and start to enjoy the thrill eventually, and you also become better at physically and emotionally opening up, plus internalizing the character.

When the first episode of his tenure came out it was that line, together with the speech about feeling the earth turn under his feet, that made me think "yep, he's the Doctor".

I saw-well no I heard a commercial (I was in the next room but could still hear the tv) once a few years ago for a show called Fortitude. I heard the voice and immediately rushed in to rewind because I knew Iâd just heard Nine đ all he said was âWelcome to Fortitudeâ but his voice is so instantly recognizable đ
I always feel the BBC really treated Chris badly: he was responsible for a big part of the success of the return of Dr Who, which makes the BBC more money than anything.

I mean I haven't got the link but my partner saw that apparently the BBC won't be doing Doctor who any more and it will go to another place. Who knows. Maybe he will come back for a one off when that happens.

To be fair he never hated Doctor Who. His issue was with the production team at the time. They treated him and fellow crew members badly (there's talk of bullying) . Some even said there was some sort of altercation between him and RTD during the filming of Boom Town (I don't know if this is true but there was some conflict with him and the production) . He also had to fight to keep his northern Accent as the production team wanted a standard English accent. Being reminded of his days as a victim of bullying growing up made his time in Doctor Who very miserable so he walked away. However, Eccleston always says the best part of his time on the show was the love he received from the fans.

@@tenshiigarashi4063 I was surprised when other new doctors spoke and had far different accents than their character and realized they had to act with an accent not their own. Uncool. Good acting, but uncool they could not have a representation of another accent of UK.

In a fan culture where youre somewhat expected to say "its always been my dream to do this role and id do it forever if i could" its so refreshing to see chris admit to seeing it as "paid work". Especiay good consider from an acting perspective hes gotta be one of the best to ever do it

If people need reminding or told what to do then how thick in the head are they that they can't do it off if their own initiative or if they like it that much, people that say "don't forget to subscribe like the video and channel" are the most annoying pricks ever and if they do say that in a video, purely because they said it , there are those of us who don't because of that reason

Eccleston is an actor first and The Doctor second and honestly that makes him so wonderful for the role. He treats it as 100% serious work.
Same, I appreciate the down to earth and professional perspective to it a lot. How he assesses big finish is especially reassuring, cus u know he's not just being sappy about it cus of an attachment to the license

And his second reason for doing the Doctor again, "the scripts are fantastic," also speaks to the fact that he's proud of what he does. He's not going to do something he can't look back on and be proud to say "I made this!"

Iâve heard (second hand so take it with a grain of salt) that he originally refused because Moffatâs first script didnât do it for him, and its thanks to his refusal that we got the amazing lore of the War Doctor and John Hurt to join the family of incarnations. If thatâs true it all worked out for the best (and Day of the Doctor is easily the best anniversary special and massive multi Doctor story). I would have liked for Eccleston to been shown the new script (if the story is true) have returned just for the flying around Gallifrey scene (for some new footage) and to shoot the regeneration from War to 9. I also would have liked for The Night of the Doctor to have just been the first part of the Day of the Doctor (instead of a CZcams special) and for Paul McGann to have also shot some new footage for the flying around Gallifrey scene, but hey you canât get everything I guess. Eccleston returning as 9 for the audio dramas, doing a Q&A (getting real in it), and praising the script and Big Finish team (they do honestly feel like on average they care a lot about DW and intimately know the various aspects on it) is already more than I ever thought possible after hearing how he left.
Day of the Doctor is character-ruiningly stupid. Far better to have Chris back for these audios in my opinion, gives him a chance to have more stories of his own.
So many people are like, "David Tennant is my Doctor," "Matt Smith is my Doctor." No. For me Christopher Eccleston has always been my Doctor. I fell in love with his character, and have always been waiting for him to come back. And I'm not ashamed to say that when he said "Fantastic" I cried.

Chris has really grown on me a lot in recent years, he's up there with Capaldi, Troughton and McGann for me

While Eccleston isn't MY Doctor, but I know EXACTLY how you feel, and I'm totally onboard with you and that fabulous emotional resonance (for me it was was when Tom Baker appeared suddenly in Day of the Doctor or when the vision of Amy Pond came to 11 at the end...so many tears). My favourites have always been David, Christopher and Matt. Theyâre all tied for my favourite. Itâs the trio for me.
Yup. Long ago I grew up watching some of 4th Doctor stories and he was my favourite one. Since then, and considering that Matt's were the last episodes I've seen so far, Christopher became my favourite incarnation. His intensity, his delivery, his roughness even, his... honesty. While other Doctors rather look like themselves like silly or clownish or quirky, 9th was a true survivor and a fighter. I never found any of that in his successors, and that was a huge loss for the main character. Eccleston forever!

Although Eccelston isnât my favorite doctor, nor do I think of him often when thinking of âthe doctorâ and all his faces. But he played the hell outta the character and did a great job beinging Doctor Who, the show, to a new generation (now generations) of people.
Whatever your experiences behind the scenes in Doctor Who were, Christopher, I would just like to say that your performance in "Dalek" was utterly iconic and is one of the reasons why that episode is in my all-time Doctor Who Top Ten.

I imagine Dr Who was a daily part of his life ever since he got the role, as he's very recognisable, and it changed his life completely, mostly due to the fact that he was blacklisted by the BBC, which is why for a while you only saw him in American productions like GI Joe and Thor 2.
But you can tell he doesn't hold disdain for Dr Who, because he's likely directly interacted with hundreds of people who have nothing but praise for his role, so for him this was a win-win, he gets money during a period of time where jobs for an actor are far more scarce, and he gets to return to a role that had a major impact on his life.

I'm sure he's always expressed appreciation to fans, and the content of show itself wasn't the primary reason for his departure, either.

I can't believe we got him back in ANY form. I love Big Finish. It gave Paul McGann the insane number of stories his Doctor deserved.
He definitely was fantastic! Most people fail to realize we wouldn't be watching Who today if it weren't for how fantastic his portrayal was. The chemistry between him and Billie Pipper as well as the rest of her wild family was so good it really laid the groundwork for the rest that was to come
Chris Eccleston is the reason I fell in love with Doctor Who. This show couldn't exist as it does now without him. In many ways, he was more authentically the Doctor than other actors (just my personal opinion) because he saw the Doctor's humanity and history and took it to heart because there's a piece of the Doctor's goodness and championing for important causes that lives in Chris. He's a massively talented actor and a genuine man. So glad to have you back, sir!!
9 always managed to say the most without very much dialogue involved at all. You can sense that passion for Shakespeare in the way he embedded that into a modern sci-fi drama.
I started with Series 3 and 10, but I went back to 9 as that finished and he immediately became my favourite. By far the most intense performance since the show's revival.

@@MrMadre It's undeniable that 4 and 10 are the most popular doctors in pop culture, but with Doctors like 9, 11, and 13, they were the jumping on points for thousands of fans so they would be more popular with their respective audiences and will keep their own fanbases for years.
@@MrMadre best and popular are two different things. Whatâs popular is objective fact, and people can consider whatâs popular to be the best, but what someone considers best is entirely subjective, and may not link up with what is popular.
Iâve always appreciated Ecclestonâs honesty and forthrightness. Most actors toe the line and say what they think the producers want them to say but he actually says what he genuinely thinks.
I like how real he always is, he's admits he never was a fan of the show and hasn't watched it before or since he left, and he also admits he's only back for the $. I wish everyone was as honest, it's fantastic.
Also helps that he's a phenomenal actor.

I think in an interview from a few months ago, that he would only return to TV Doctor Who when "hell freezes over".

Christopher Eccleston appears and saves the show...twice, he is the most canonical doctor in real life until now.
He was the Doctor that introduced me to the series. Iâll always love him.

TARDIS translates from English-Diplomatic: - "The BBC were disorganised, dishonest and had many underhand backstabby conversations about me, and keeping standards high wasn't, in my opinion, something they focussed on as much as I thought they should".
I love Chris. Whatever his beef with whoever bothered him for whatever reason during that series (Russel T Davies and 2 other producers apparently), he's always been professionally vague about it all. I do wish he'd done 2 series, BUT, that first series almost acts as a soft introduction to the Doctor. He was approachable, his outfit wasn't so outlandish that it would instantly turn the non-geeks away. He drew back old audiences, and gave millions their start on the journey of a Who fan. Once he'd drawn people in, he *could* leave with pride in the job he did. By the end of that series, people were prepared to take on a more flamboyant, slightly more quirkily dressed Doctor. And they just got quirkier and quirkier...

Learning what a hard time he had of it with Doctor Who when I loved his incarnation so much was heartbreaking. It's great to see him having a positive experience playing the Doctor! (And getting the paid work that an actor of his calibre deserves!).

I have this gut feeling that the 9th Doctor would meet the master in a way that would throw him off completely. Very cheery in nature like meeting an old friend while wondering about, shaking the Master's hand and acting as if there was never any bad blood between them. Only for the Doctor to trap him before The Master can make his move.

God, I miss the 2005 theme arrangement. It was so good, not to mention timeless. Why they ever felt the need to change it is beyond me.

Part of the tradition, I think its good, gives fans different options to enjoy. For me the season 4 version will always be the best.
it started with 5th, each doctor had their own theme, whether this is a good thing or not is up to debate!!
But please let the 9th and 10th doctor meet in a cross over audio now that would be "fantastic!" Lets make that happen please

The 9th doctor has always been my favourite since 2005 when I watch the first episode of series 1 and I really enjoyed it all the way up to now so thank you Christopher for that and can't wait to hear your big finish story's

9 was my doctor and it gives me both chills and warms my heart to have heard him back. His condor and bluntness combined with his views on activism really highlight what he brought to the character and made his tenure so endearing. Fantastic.
I love hearing him talk about himself as the 9th doctor again. This pandemic has really killed me but seeing my childhood hero return makes me feel like it's all ok
I hope he's able to have a more positive experience playing the Doctor this time around. He deserves happiness.

dr. who was a weird old show that my mom liked when i was a kid. she made me watch the old tv movie (Paul McGann) with her and i didnt get it. Christopher Eccleston was the Doctor for me who i got. Thanks to this man, i have seen every episode of Doctor Who i have been able to get my hands on. David Tennant's take may be my favorite, but i wouldnt have even gotten that far without Mr. Eccleston. fingers crossed for a multi-doctor crossover in the future.

I knew him through role of Norfolk in "Elizabeth". Remember being so happy to see him as Dr Who. Looking forward to hearing him in role again.
Christopher Eccleston is my favorite doctor. He is the one i was introduced to and will always be fond of that season.
