I don’t even have to think for a second: number 1 Turkish entry was Mor ve Ötesi with Deli 2008. can’t believe you didn’t mention it. It was the better rock song than manga AND they actually sang in Turkish and not English. I don’t understand a word, but listening to their songs since then. Mor ve Ötesi are like the turkish version of MUSE.

I don't know if you remember the Turkish Airlines Commercial 'We are Turkish airlines, we are globally yours'- that was Sertab Erener. Huge star in Turkey since the 1980's and still pumping out hit albums! Turkey always had bad results in Eurovision and it wasn't so popular - Sertab changed all that and it's largely thanks to her success that Turkey became so much stronger later when TRT took it more seriously. I was lucky enough to see her live in concert in Australia and shake her hand for about 10 seconds during 'Everyway That I Can', the first year I ever watched Eurovision and became a diehard fan- all thanks to Sertab!

Dum Tek Tek, For Real, and Manga's songs were written and composed by the artists themselves and some Turkish music professionals. What i appreciate from Turkey's participation is that at least they really showcased the talent of the Turkish people, unlike some countries who are participating today who are buying songs and producers from Sweden or elsewhere to write a smash song.

Then host did draw and Semiha won the draw so she represented us in 1975. Cici kizlar were group and their song was "Delisin Delisin" and actually I'm shocked that how Delisin wouldn't won. I'm very surprised that the EBU is in talks with TRT for Turkey to return to Eurovision because I always thought that Turkey would never return to the contest as long as Erdogan is in charge. I'm puzzled as to what made them change their mind all of a sudden.
If Turkey does return, I imagine they'll definitely get a good result like Italy in 2011 because surely the EBU will want to keep them around.

Good choices, but you never consider entries from the 20th century when you do these rankings, which is a real shame. Especially when discussing Turkey, who had some epic entries in the 1900s. Their beautiful, underrated debut in 1975, the unforgettable Turkish delight from 1980, the awesome synth-pop in 1986, the hysterical entries from 1987 and 1989 and Şebnem's beautiful songs from 1996 & 1997 - to name a few!
Eurovision has such a long and rich history, I wish you open up to it and expose your followers to the abundance and beauty it has to offer.

My lovely William and Deban :) Hadise was very sick the night before the Grand Final so they needed to put the male singer forward, most probably. "Being sexy but not slutty" was a very good and valid comment but unfortunately this stage and belly show did not satisfy the Turkish broadcasting and just a month ago the broadcast showed it like an inappropriate reason why Turkey is not attending the contest anymore... Of course "Everyway that i can" is the best Turkish entry ever and we should not forget 97' entry "Dinle". I just want to say "Deban, please listen to Sertab's live performances on CZcams, especially the song "Lal" :) you will change your opinion! Last but not least, I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT U MENTIONED BULENT ERSOY :)

I must say, I am no prude and I grew up in Europe. but for some (or various) reasons, I did feel embarrased by the perfomance, the song, the tone of music (not sure, if it was the kitshy clishee, the cheep try to play with sex appeal - at least the stage designers wish (I have heard they were going back and forth between two kins of outfit and decided to take the red belly dancer look the last day - don't kno - still don't like it. I am surprised, how many really like it. also listening to it!?)

    1. My number one has to be 2003's Sertab Erener. That funky bass line, syncopated rhythms, Arab-influenced instrumentation mixed with Balkan beats: they were all in Eurovision before Sertab, but mainly in the Eastern European countries, especially, and, of course, the Balkans and Greece. But in one year, in one performance that had more energy it could handle (and resulted in an out-of-breath performance with singing on the sharp side), Erener conquered the stage and the contest and the stage. The net result? *Everyone* wanted that sound. Even the UK went for it with Javine's "Touch My Fire". It wasn't a chanson, or four-on-the-floor, or Scandi-pop...*yet*. It introduced a whole new sound to Eurovision and its influence is felt in a whole host of tracks. And most of that can be traced back to Sertab's win. She changed the contest in an indelible way. 2. My number two is 2010's MaNga, where Turkey has shown that, alongside Finland, they're one of the few countries willing to send heavy rock entries. These aren't just normal pop-rock entries other nations send year after year, but hard-edged, sparks-flying, guitar-shredding, vocal-growling rock. With Finland's Lordi it won with costumes. With MaNga, costumes weren't necessary; the song did all the talking. It was three minutes of rough energy wrapped in a catchy pop song. The chorus still rattles inside my head. That year, I still liked "Satellite" better, and William's analysis of why Lena won with this (and why she didn't the next year) showed a very shrewd analytical mind who knows all facets of his environment and what's going on beneath the surface, and the effect they have on current events, even down to the Eurovision Song Contest. My number three are two that come from one artist: Şebnem Paker. First, alone in 1996, with "Beşinci mevsim", and then together with Grup Etnic in 1997 with "Dinle", which garnered them a 3rd place finish, just like it does in my own rankings here. Honourable mentions go to Hadise's 2009 entry "Düm Tek Tek", because while it is one of the best of their later entries it kind of sounds like a pale copy of 2003. It does have an infectious beat that makes you want to move and a chorus that sticks in your head sometimes, so it shows if you're going to imitate something, imitate the best! But I also like a few of Turkey's earlier entries, like 1980's Adja Pekkan with "Pet'r Oil". She has very pretty voice and the song has a good momentum behind it. Beş Yıl Önce, On Yıl Sonra in 1984 sound kind of like more easy-listening ABBA with "Halay". Klips ve Onlar in 1985 have a great energetic trumpet melody moving through their chorus of "Halley" that sticks in your head, and İzel Çeliköz, Reyhan Karaca & Can Uğurluer bring "Iki dakika" (two minutes) of a super-catchy early-90's bop in 1991. There are few, however, who changed the way the song contest sounded more than Sertab, though, and it was an immediate refreshing of the ears after the disastrous "I Wanna" from Latvia's Marie N the year before. BTW, I also missed Deban! It's so great to see you again! I loved watching those UMK videos! On to Italy 2022, hopefully with Turkey included! :)
