    Great tyre test, thankyou. I used a set of Dunlop Direzza Star Spec 001's in 245/45x17 and 265/40x17's on a Holden Commodore when I lived in the UAE. It's the Australian version of the Opel Omega, rear wheel drive, but with a 5.7 LS1 V8 that was making about 425hp and 435tq (lbs/ft). The kerb weight was 1655 and can honestly say they were worth every penny. The best tyre I ever had on any car I've ever owned (had a string of BMW 3 series before that (323i, 325i and a 325i fitted with a 2.7 M20).
    I had tried so many different brands of tyre always fitting the best available. I'd go with Dunlop's again if given the chance.
    (Michelin's always took the least amount of weight to balance, the quality must be top notch).

    Guys, thank you very much for this video. I was waiting so long for comparison of AR1 and A052. I love AR1 on track, but they are not that good on road, when they are not properly warm. Many people purchased recently A052 saying they are much better than R888(R) and AR1 for amateur autocross/slalom. But there was no comparison on track when tyres are up to temperature. Until now. My next set is A052 for sure. Thanks a lot.👏

      I actually went from R888 to R888r to A052 to AR1 recently. A052 are the best so far in terms of streetability and ultimate grip, i only went the AR1 due to my recent budget and although I'm very happy with them on track, they are nowhere near as agile, responsive or streetable as the a052. Noise was the first thing I noticed with the AR1, driving home from the tire shop it sounded like I had 4x4 Mud tires on the car. But as soon as I put my foot down... wow the grip! hard to tell if acceleration grip was as good as fresh A052 but I was impressed none the less. R888r is more like the a052 just slightly worse at everything, braking, acceleration, peak grip, wet grip etc.

  • @99Lezard99
    @99Lezard99 Před 11 měsíci +11

    ive heard the a052 works really great on light cars that are about in the 1000kg class.
    heavy things should really run the dunlop. much better suited for the newer german tanks. 👀
    anyway, the ad09 looks like it'll be a winner on track while still offering the needed on road Performance.
    just about slightly faster than an ar1 is very impressive considering its probably gonna be easily liveable with day in day out.

    • @Skirk84
      @Skirk84 Před 11 měsíci

      I think because this car naturally has a heavy front, skinnier front tires and a lot of weight on them they will start to overheat and overpreassure quite quickly. I was curious as to how they know what pressures to keep them in if they don't know what tire it is, for example the AR1 prefers 30psi hot where the A052 prefers 35psi hot.

  • @csp6
    @csp6 Před 11 měsíci +7

    Great video, good to see the AD09 and the new Nankang! For 215/45R17 the Direzza's are actually cheaper than A052 so I'll be going with some of those later in the year.
    BTW if there's any way you could do a pace drop-off test one day (e.g. how much drop in performance of new tyres through to tyres that have done X heat cycles / Y laps) that would be amazing. I realise that's a lot of effort though! Really just to get an idea for track day people who do maybe 8-10 runs a day across 5-6 days how much the tyres drop off/harden.

So far through my limited experimentation, on my car anyway, they seem to grip a little better than my RE-71Rs did, and certainly better than the PZ4s. As th Evo is designed around 17 wheels and everyone sticks 18 inch on and wide rubber which just f*cks up the handling unless you are on the track. The same with these lowered cars is stupid. My car was built round Clubsport KW suspension for 'B'roads on 225/45 17 on Magnesum Rays CE28 expensive wheels and very light and corner weighted. Thanks for this review/test!
    Since none of the manufacturers will provide a great performing, pure street (300-340 tread wear) tire in my size, I am forced to go with the most 'streetable' 200 tread wear 'track' tire.
    Michelin totally disallows us here in the states from having the PS5 (let alone the PS4S) in a 215/40-17, and Conti does not even offer anything near that size in their equivalent UUHP road tire lineup. ☹😡
    I was already leaning towards the AD09, given it's more rain grooved/cut tread pattern not killing me on standing water/heavy rain use roadways, and more 'endurance' level tread wear than the gumball sticky, 'lightly cut slick' pure track tires (which could be deadly in the rain, even at full tread depth).
    I am glad to see that I would NOT be giving up too much in ultimate grip over said 'one lap wonder' exclusive track tires.
    That Dunlop almost pure race tire is not even sold here in the states, at all.

As id be curious if the "longer lasting" tyres stayed consistent or if they fell off a cliff after a heat cycle or two. Would give insight into the tyres that no one else will ever bother doing. As how they perform with stickers on is not really representative of use on 99% of track days

    I understand about keeping the variables all the same but some of these tires may like more of less pressure cold than what you set them. That may have affected the testing. I would be interested in knowing the heat cycle life of each.

    In my experience the worst street semi slicks for wear rate on track make the best tyre for the street as they perform well at street temperatures without the need to fry heat onto them .

    Great test. I have the Ad09's on my MX5 which I track and love them. I just bought PS4 S's for my HSV Clubsport which will be fitted next week. It won't see any track use but now I'm wondering if I should have bought the Ad09 for it as well? Would the Ad09's be a better road tyre than the PS4 S?

      For us, the PS4S is probably one of the best all round road tyres on the market that's great in the dry and wet. AD09's are a little bit more track focused than the PS4S so you made the right decision.

    On the AR1's, Nankang recommends a hot pressure range of 34 - 42 PSI for cars weighing over 1400 KG. What was your rational for runnig them at 30 PSI hot for the test?

    Hard to not read any of the comments while watching the video cause don't want to ruin the surprise. But do want🎉 to say a few things including predictions and a question.
    Have a feeling the crs will be first a052 second or the Dunlop first. I personally have zero experience with Dunlop being a legit race tore makes me think first. Have a bit of experience on a052, crs, Falken rt660, and Goodyear 3r.
    I believe the goodyear supercar 3r would be the fastest tire here is tested. Do you not have that tire there? Thanks so very much for doing this. Love a good tire test. I run a pretty fast c7z time attack car in the US. Goodyear Supercar 3r is best there. Although the a052 or crs might be able to beat it due to coming up to temp quicker so before hp starts falling off on heat soaked supercharged car like the vette. So maybe not out right faster but if done right might be able to beat it. Can't thank you enough for this video!!

    Polite comment from myself, the Nankang CR-S needs scrubbing in at 75% max effort then leaving for 24hrs per their own notes before you can run them on track at full attack or they'll not perform. I run them here in New Zealand as a time attack tire. They need low pressures to come on also ive found in the GR Yaris they're best at 28-30psi hot. They're not pitched as a tire above the AR-1 either, they're 200tw whereas the AR-1 is a 100tw tire.
    Out if curiosity, tire pressures are hugely important on getting the most out of a tire, how was this managed during the test?
    Sorry if the above seems negative, that wasn't my intention, just felt it was worth raising some important points. There's easily a 2second swing in lap times for a tire if you dont get tire pressures and temps dialled in correctly.

    my car came with brand new nankang all season tires on it. i swapped those pieces of garbage out as soon as possible. they were unsafe to drive on wet pavement. any moderate braking in the wet would slide. even just backing out of the driveway then braking to change directions would slide. i couldnt not believe a tire in 2017 was THAT bad.
