    • @HENNOCKGARAGE
      @HENNOCKGARAGE  Před 3 měsíci

      Hey Tim Pearson
      I ended up using Heritage parts in the UK for a lot of my seals. They have a number of brands but I found the German branded or I think now VW have started selling a few seals and stuff like that which I have only been able to find at heritage parts.
      I don't know about shipping to you but I bet it would be cheaper than to me in Australia.
      If you didn't want to go there I have gotten seal parts from Wolfsburg west or CIP1 have great products too.
      What are your plans for the Kombi?

  • @johncross2787
    @johncross2787 Před rokem +3

    Question: When you have cit out the rust, how do you treat the inside of the panel pieces you weld in? Surely they will rust from the inside or are you 110% sure no condensation will collect there in the future?

    • @HENNOCKGARAGE
      @HENNOCKGARAGE  Před rokem +2

      Hi John
      The way I like to do it is treat everything behind the panel as much as possible (rust converter and paint) and then the inner panel I like to paint with something that is really going to stick, normally means something a little more expensive but worth it in the long run. The panel I weld in i like to paint and then around the edges I put a weld through primer on it which is hopefully going to stay on after I weld it in. Then once I have finished all my welding and painting I drench the inside of all the panels I can with a fish oil or cavity wax which is meant to help with any rust issues.
      Its a horrible process but well worth it. Long straws and pipes to get into everything.
      I hope this helps :)
      Sorry for the late reply

    I should like it much more if you could break up the whole restorationprocess into seperate episodes and deliver more detail during the process so that the viewer can also see what you are doing. Unfortunayely it rushed through the process and one could hardly see what was going on.
    I am admiring people who does this kind of job because it is hard work I suppose and you must have a lot of knowledge and skill to complete a vehicle.
    Congratulations on your job, you have done good. Shall like to see your next commision.

      @@HENNOCKGARAGEI am planning on doing some restoration in my car as well. However I only plan for 2-4 months. Was a bit confused when I read the title how it could take 3 years but I think I understand now. Sounds like you probably just did work on weekends and holidays and probably had a 9-5. Plus at the beginning you did a lot of manual grinding and you did a lot of body work. Plus all the wood interior. I am not going to be working when I do mine. Going 12 hours a day 7 days a week until it’s done so I can get up to 1500 hours in just 125 days. Just about 4 months. I do the same when I do work as well. I work 7 days a week up to 14 hours sometimes but then I don’t work all year. Also I think I should get it done a bit quicker in terms of hours spent because it’s a newer car, I am sand blasting and powder coating instead of grinding and painting and no wood work. Really great build though I loved it. Nice to see you get every speck of rust. A lot of people cut corners but you got it all. That’s what I want to do.

      @HENNOCKGARAGE  Před 9 měsíci

      I made a small frame that mounts onto the chassis at the rear spring plate mounts and from the front beam mounts and then had it go around the whole van and the had a small bar that mounted off the frame to the gutter so it didn't twist too much on the side I was laying it down on. If you jump on the samba and search for rotisserie plans there are a heap of ideas and plans on there that might help if youre doing the same. :)

    Very interesting. These restoration shops do such great work and then add odd music, so I watched with sound off. It would really be interesting if the shop would share their profit margin, not the actually numbers that is their business, but percentages. With so much work what would the sale or price to client to do the work? Thanks.

    • @HENNOCKGARAGE
      @HENNOCKGARAGE  Před 10 měsíci

      Thanks :)
      I think it's hard to say for me as a lot of the say paint work took so long and I bet a paint shop would be a lot quicker than me. But I think it takes a lot more time and effort than people think to get a nice paint job. I think in just sanding I was looking at maybe 20 or 30 hours as it's just such a big flat car and to pay someone to do that it really adds up and that's only the sanding and not the sand paper and other things you use to do a job. So I think sometimes paint shops charge a little too much. But it all comes down to the hours I think

    3 to 4 years of tinkering in your spare time is hardly "HARD WORK". That would be if this all would have been done in 3 months. So you cleaned some parts and gave it a nice paint job. Good going.

    Absolutely super job. I’m very interested in the supports that you used to lay the body over on its side. Do you have any close up photos or even better drawings with dimensions etc. I am just about to start a full makeover on our 72 Lowlight camper. The ability to lay the body over would make a huge difference. Thanks in advance.

    • @HENNOCKGARAGE
      @HENNOCKGARAGE  Před rokem

      Hi tony I made this one just out of some scrap I had laying around. I just used the front beam mounts and the rear suspension mounts and then ran a bar length ways under the gutter to support it so it didn’t twist. But if I was to do it again I would make one like the 1st or 2nd rotisserie on page one of the link below.

      @@HENNOCKGARAGE thanks mate. I have looked at that thread on the Samba, there are a number of good ideas on there. I like the idea of having wheels to be able to move it around while it’s on its side. Cheers

    Out of curiosity what would this vehicle fully restored be worth?

      Hi Mitch
      I think it's very hard to work out, the market has crashed since the interest rate rises but I think a realistic sale price would be around the 30 to 40k mark. All depends on who wants to buy I think.

    Nice work. But why have you left rusty parts? On the front left side, you changed some rubber on top of the rust. And the front bumper is still in shady condition. When you have it apart, why not fixing it all?

      Hi thanks :)
      The plan is to fix it but I got super excited having it really close to having it on the road that I chucked them on and got it all road worthy. The plans for the front bumper I want to make a big addition to it to protect the front panel and maybe add some spot lights and to do all that I will have to weld on the bumper and don't want to paint it to have to do it again. But hopefully soon I can get on to it and paint it all and get rid of the rust under the rubber to.
