"They Call Us Chinese" India's Rebel State: Nagaland (

  • Man, this isn't what you think of when you imagine India. In the far northeastern corner of the country, on the border of Myanmar, lies a state called Nagaland. In every sense of the word, Nagaland is different: different ethnicities, languages, even religions. It's the one place where I don't seem to hear the Indian accent when people speak English.
It's not that simple to get there. Nagaland is a series of hills, and to get to the heart of the state in Mon, you must go on a real journey. I decided to take this journey by train, road and whatever else I needed. I was very surprised by what I found at the end..

Great video brother. I'll have to put Nagaland on my long bucket list. One of the first people I met the first time I travelled to Nepal in 1982 was a man who had immigrated from Nagaland and set up a small bakery and cafe in Lakeside Pokhara - Santi Bakery.. We became good friends for many years until he passed away in the early 1990s (possibly from the effects of too much ganja and raxi/alcochol). I spent many happy hours with him in Pokhara, Nepal snacking on his "special" apple muffins and "special: brownies. sharing a glass of local raxi and a chillum of ganja :-) RIP Kamal Singh Lama. Jai Nagaland. Jai Nepal.

Just a few years back in that region (Mon District), the Indian army killed 14 unarmed Naga villagers for no reason. They were not even part of the Naga rebel groups but the Indian army still killed them. And if India was a sane state the soldiers involved would face consequences, but the army protected the culprits and let them go free.

Yes ,people there are nice but poor. Coz if they are rich, they won't be Christian.
They become Christian coz they hate what Hindu's government treats them. So badly. So racist.
In this turbulence situation, Christian missionaries take their chance.

@@kunalmarathe5542I totally understand AFSPA from the perspective of the government of India and her military but it has done nothing but cause the worst tragedies in naga territories. Countless stories of villages being rounded up, tortures, rapes and so on were committed since the 60s. A whole village lost all its men when the Sikh regiment beheaded every male in the pochury region. Men being buried alive and even tied up for target practice are a few examples of atrocities committed. I can never look at AFSPA as a policy that does any good. It's basically the opposite of the Geneva convention.

I'm from nagaland, born in 85 in a small village on the western side of nagaland, growing up I've heard the atrocities committed by the Indian army towards the innocent public irrespective of their tribes, just because some of our people are in the "rebel army"! ,it just can't be said in a short comment... I still remember one incident, it was in 97 ,one evening, we heard gunshots, EVERYBODY,I said EVERYBODY from my Village (about 1000 household) got panicked, some grabbed water bottles, torch lights, blankets ,their kids, machetes etc and began fleeing towards the deep forest here and there, at home it was my pregnant mom, me (the oldest) a sister, a younger differently abled brother (dad went to the city just a few days back for his studies) mom told me to grab the torchlight, water bottle and my brother's diapers and a few warm clothes and to hold my sister's hand and "run up to the mountain", mom carried my brother on her back and we began hurrying up to the mountain, when we reached there , there's a lot of people in the woods, there, the older men instructed everyone to "women and kids below 10 " to a specific area ,and kids above 10 and youths to a particular area and the rest of the older folks to the front, we weren't allowed to cry because "if the Indian army find us they'll beat us and kill our parents and young women will be taken away"! .. that memory still remains in my mind, as an adult I've been all over mainland India for work purposes and I've met wonderful people from mainland India and made friends with them but deep down inside me , I cannot accept that I am an Indian,it was forced down on me, ofc sure ,no doubt, India is a great country, there's good and bad, i understand that the regular citizens of mainland India doesn't have anything to do with the "issue" but history cannot be erased, right!? 2 millions Nagas have died since 1950. And I am not sympathetic towards the rebels either. If these bloody dimwits have a slight of shine in them ,the general naga populace won't have to suffer so much. The past Rebel army have at least a sense of principle, moral, ethics and integrity to them but these days ,they are shameless and remorseful. The Mon incident is one of the many they have swept under the rug all these years,if they weren't caught red handed they'll be saying " militants killed"! Just as usual. Do you know? Nagaland, including the other 6 North East Indian state is under Marital law since the 70's?? It is called the Armed forces special power act (AFSPA) .. giving the free right to the Indian Army to shoot and kill anybody on a mere suspicion.

As Someone who spent my childhood in the northeast India, I can say it's one of the most beautiful places to live. I lived in Zemabawk, Mizoram; Dimapur, Nagaland and Gangtok, Sikkim. About the racism part, it goes both ways. When I was in the school, the mizo kids used to bully the kids who are a few shades darker than them. The vendors, renters ...etc scam us by charging more money than locals, It was a common thing, hearing many non locals getting mugged.

I still don't understand why travel vloggers only stay in big cities in India... There is SO MUCH diversity in India's ecosystems (10 I believe)... I just don't understand why anyone would want to travel to a big city in India... There is constant noise, pollution, trash everywhere, annoying people, scammers, and nothing too amazing to see. Go see the diversity of a country as big as India... Don't stay in the terrible huge cities where you will never experience peace. Go experience nature.

Buddhism, writing system, poetry (Kabya, from Pali: Kavi), etc.
Tibet, Nepal-Himalayas, and even Thai tribes in Yun Nan share lots of common with Indian cultural than with China.

Southeast Asians and East Asians have more similarities. Only Hinduism and Buddhism in India have influenced East and Southeast Asians, which is different from Indian culture

In comparison to the central part of the state, this side of nagaland is fairly underdeveloped (infrastructure wise) but the people are warm and welcoming nonetheless. AND the continued echoes of "happy new year" isn't an euphemism😆 We Nagas tend to extend our new year greetings till the first two or three months of the new year. Friendly bunch we are indeed.
