With the NFL being one of the most premiere sports leagues and a lucrative form of entertainment to people all over the world, but to many, it is still considered a job, especially the men who play the game.
Today in a special edition of The Pivot, Ryan, Channing and Fred sit down with the man who is at the helm of the NFL's Player Union- DeMaurice Smith for an in-depth conversation covering the state of the union, player's contracts, injury clauses and the relationship with owners and the commissioner Roger Goodell.
Ryan starts the conversation going back to working as player rep before the lock out in 2011 and how the league has changed from then and continues to evolve every year. De talks about how he got involved as the head of the union and his passion behind his purpose and explains why he is often seen as an adversarial figure between the players and the owners and league.
Fred and Channing ask a lot of questions around injury clauses after what we saw happen with Damar Hamlin a few weeks ago as well as guaranteed contracts around quarterbacks and specifically ask about Lamar Jackson and what the future looks like for him as well as learn why it takes a unified front to go against a multi-billon dollar business.
Although this is episode is out of our the range of our normal shows, we hoped to share a breakdown from a business perspective and we worked to guide the conversation to provide viewers with a glimpse into the inner workings of the layered relationship between the National Football League the 32 owners and the men who play the game.
Tap in every Tuesday at noon eastern for our premiere episode of the Pivot. Special NFL seasonal drops on Friday afternoons at 3:30 pm. We are your one-stop platform for all your sports and entertainment content.

This is why the owners and Gruden were talking like they did behind his back. Whenever one of us are one of the smartest in the room, they try to destroy them. It's time for those of us with money abc influence to recognize and own our power. We ooze intellect, ingenuity, creativity, style and influence. It's so second nature to us that we give away the secret sauce for free. Stop doing it. And players stop the hatred and jealousy, its about leaving the state of things better than where you found it. The more i learn about the league, the more I hate it. Nothing is unbeatable, throw rocks until you can shoot missiles. ..

It was great that he brought that to the players mind that you guys work so hard why is the owner the person who gets the trophy first. RC even said I never thought of that. Those owners have no rules to follow. I’ve said for years, if ALL the players said we retire, and head to a lesser league. The XFL or something, those owners would give whatever they are asking for! More minority coaches, more health care, whatever. They just have to do it all together. It’s like if all of Walmart’s product just left the store! The players are the product, the tv deals are signed by the owners but bc of the players!

The day DeMaurice walks out the door for good, Goodell and those 32 owners are gonna throw a helluva party. It's funny that an owner once said that You can't have the inmates running the asylum. However, 32, well 33 people (including "The Commish") are wardens running the asylum but they have no rules or codes amongst themselves. Interesting. Yes, in the nascency, the league was started and developed by owners. But someone needs to remind those people, without the Sayers', Green's, Namath's, Montana's, Rice's, Sanders', Mahomes', Kupp's. Allen's. Barkley's. Hill's, Brady's, and the many before and those coming in the future, there will be no butts in seats and no eyes watching without THOSE PLAYERS.

As a union leader a lot can be gleaned from this interview. I love the direction of the show and how the independence allows to have a unique flow.

Best interview to date. Very informative. Gained so much respect for Demaurice Smith. The players are to be grateful to have him as the NFLPA president

Amazing interview! I learned a lot about the players side and the fight they have to get a fair deal each time there is a CBA deal on the table.

I've listened to this about 10x now...
I've been thru union & mgmt disputes in recent past, so I promised myself to NEVER return to a workplace being as I were before....
Very important to understand HOW to fight in business.
    It will transform you.
I'll look for more of D. Smith's lectures. Thank you sir.

This Is my favorite episode. I love it so much, I watched it a second time. Throwing rocks at tanks will never stop the tank, but if you keep throwing the Rocks at tanks with other people who throw rocks at tanks , you will chip off enough paint, to make them get out and make repairs. Awesome RC and I did not know that Joe Montana was a scab. I was in one of the largest unions in the United States. Our contract was the largest private collective bargaining agreement (CBA) in the United States. I understand exactly what he's talkin about.
