In a special edition of The Pivot, we sit down with University of Virginia running back Mike Hollins who survived the shooting that killed three of his teammates a month ago. In an emotional conversation with Ryan, Fred and Channing, Mike opens up about that day for the first time and courageously takes us through the moments leading up to the senseless attack and the minutes following when he was shot.
On a school trip to Washington DC with his classmates, that Sunday started off as a happy day filled with so many positive memories for these young people as they took in important parts of history and spent their time laughing, listening to music and enjoying the opportunity. As the bus returned to school that evening, shots were fired by one of the students on the bus, killing three young men and injuring two others, one being Mike Hollins.
Mike takes the guys through this emotional day, how he lost his best friend and teammates to the senseless act, his recovery and approaching each day now with love and purpose. A story of tragedy and loss turned into tribute and honor.

I hate to go backwards and be negative. This is why the pivot away from I am athlete was crucial.
These dudes do they best to navigate toxic masculinity. Something plaguing frankly a world
@@andrewrichardson5809 Stop it! There’s nothing “Toxic” about masculinity
Rev. Ryan, Freddy Flowers and Crazy Chan. You guys have changed the game. This is no longer a sports podcast, it’s become a network where we can tune in to see life changing material. Albeit some episodes are somber. PLEASE keep moving the way y’all do. WE LOVE IT AND WE NEED IT. Salute KINGS!🫡🥰
They showing others that you can diversify your podcast portfolio you don't always have to speak on things one dimensional. A lot of things are happening with our jockes and if they don't bring it to the forefront then who else is gonna do so. Which is why "Everyone can do a Podcast but not everyone can Pivot"!
@@1Nubien Well said 👌🏾
Tbh I forget they played football until they say it themselves. I legit just watch to see who's on next 🤣💯 that's how great these brothers have become.
@@rrealjuliuss the chemistry between them and there production team is awesome, you never know who or what to expect in every podcast. Each podcast is a cut above the last one so always come to receive the unexpected in every podcast.
Ayeeee they need to capitalize on some merch fr lol
That pre med student is my baby cousin 🖤 my heart goes out to who yall lost but I thank Jehovah God yall made it 🙏🏾
I am a 67 year old woman and I am a big fan of the Pivot podcast. This podcast is one of the only ones I look at for this very reason. These young men speak to the souls of people. Thank you for allowing this young man to communicate what is in his heart. Your questions were insightful and helped him to speak his truth. 👏👏👏
52 and it's my only go to weekly🙏💕
My sister you said the truth. PEACE AND BLESSINGS TO YOU 👸🏽💯🙏🏿
This is the beauty of this podcast. It transcends race, age and class. This is what sports journalism should be but rarely is...no yelling, no screaming...just facts.!
Channing is on point and actually showing his compassion is beautiful.
Gotta level up
I’m a 52 year old mom from KY who listens to every show. I tell everyone they should listen. Thank you for this story and for Mike’s willingness to share. Your love for him is evident.
I love how RC didn't refer to the three victims as "football players" but as people. At the end of the day they are ordinary people who are friends and family to others. It's the subtle details in how he introduced the episode that brought tears to my eyes. Mike is one strong and caring dude who is only going to continue to inspire and will see great success in life. I lost my older brother unexpectedly a little over three years ago, two days after I started college, and the pain I still feel is indescribable. I can't imagine how this young man feels. God was looking out for him and now his brothers are too. I pray he finds some comfort and relief along with the families. I cannot wait to see his success story unfold in the future. He gained a huge fan in me and many others.
RYAN!!!! This is why “The Pivot” was created!!! Dude, the content that you guys put out is why you guys are the BEST show out there!!! My prayers for you, Mike and all those who lost someone goes out to you daily!!!!
It's so sad that a situation even happens. But this young man is so brave to relive this horrible situation.
But why relive it ?
@@ronhobbz1114 because that’s how you grieve. He’ll never stop thinking about that night and that is completely understandable. He’s talking about how the that field trip was with his friends and classmates. Maybe that brings a smile to the young man. The bad will always be tied to the good of that day. He is an absolutely inspiring young man, who I would love to shake his hand and tell him he will be definitely changing a lot young boys and girls lives with his story. The good and the bad. The strength that he has to persevere that day to sit and talk about it, is more than most of us human beings will ever have and is truly inspirational.
@@PauliePitt 100% but not in front of a camera they got views which made them money of this young guys pain that ain’t right smh I agree u gotta talk about but for him and all the parents friends affected from that horrible day no need for it to be in the public light

I was not going to watch this episode. I loved the sensitiveness of how the questions were asked. I loved the way he was allowed to be present and not pressed. You gentlemen did an awesome interview with this young man. May God continue to order his steps.
Love how no matter how serious the convo Channing can always be playful and make everyone laugh! Gotta love it
What an incredible young man! Momma, if you happen to read these comments, well done!!!...thank you Ryan, Chan, and Fred for how you helped him share his story with us. Great episode that I hope a lot of people take time to watch.
I do not know what it is like to be a survivor of a mass shooting, BUT I do know what it is like to be a survivor of sexual assault. Many of the things Mike speaks about here feeling "behind the 8 ball" or like his "life is moving in slow motion" and "losing a bit of motivation" towards his dreams. I FELT that shit, heavy! Each day gets better beloved and you will make it out of this dark place. You will find your way back to your tunnel vision and it will come back with SUCH FERVOR that the world will not even be prepared for how you finna pop out. Your bros are with you and within you now. One day at a time!
I’ve watched this kid play ball from pop warner til now & it doesn’t surprise me. He’s always been a young man of integrity & he’s respected by all of his teammates. You never want to hear anything tragic like this especially the ones you encountered. I’m so glad he’s here to tell it from his perspective
I love the fact that the host of the Pivot showing others that you can diversify your podcast portfolio you don't always have to speak on things one dimensional. A lot of things are happening with our jockes and if they don't bring it to the forefront then who else is gonna do so. Which is why "Everyone can do a Podcast but not everyone can Pivot"! - Fred Taylor.
Once again the Pivot proves that it’s the best podcast show period. This young man Mike Hollins is truly a hero. RIP to the fallen victims at UVA & thank you for sharing your story. 🙏🏾❤️🕊️🏈🧔🏾♂️
I have major respect for R.C., Freddy T and Chan for continuously providing great episodes and having Mike provide his insights on everything that transpired. Continued prayers for each and everyone involved 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 R.I.H. to the three men 🙏🏽
I’m I the only one crying while this young man is telling his story?
Nope! Me too😢
Really impressed with Channing this episode. He's gotten so much better at asking questions and balancing insight / humor!
You guys are just right for men's needs. To be able to express yourself in a warm & inviting climate is refreshing. This show has to go national, to the 4 major networks. A huge thanks to your fellas!
13:38 “I had all the questions in the world with no answers. “- Mike
😢 I felt that
Keep this young man wrapped in love and support. He'll be dealing with this tragedy, along with many other students who were there, for the rest of his life. His story will positively impact many
Thank you, Mike Hollins. The world needed you to speak. I thank you 😊 and God bless you 🙏 ❤️
Man RC you are truly a Man of GOD and I must say this interview touched me deeply just thinking of what this young man has endured. This is the 2nd time The Pivot had me crying like a Baby but I definitely appreciate these stories. I Love The Pivot and for Mike I wish you nothing but Prosperity in your Life and May GOD continue to cover him with his precious Blood
His ability to speak on this tragedy and shine a bright light on these young men lost is inspiring.
A lot of heart in this show. The Pivot deserves their Emmy
Thank you for a great opportunity to hear this young man speak may God continue to bless him
So awesome to give this kid a chance to talk on another level. You guys are so amazing. Mike is a superman!
Born and raised in Charlottesville, Va, and this hurt something terrible. 😢 Never in a million years would I ever have imagined something like this could happen here. This young man is courageous, and I'm praying for him and the other victims. Thank you, guys, for sharing their story because this is a horrible tragedy.
I can only imagine the pain he’s going through.. prayers and rest in piece to the ones lost. 🕊
Peace, not piece.
Speechless… can’t stop hurting for you bro, and admiring your depth & strength of character… All prayers & thoughts to you, and everyone affected by this horrible loss… 🙏🏽🙏🏽🤎‼️👑
I am in tears watching this. What a transformative episode. You guys really nailed this show.
This was POWERFUL and yet very difficult to watch. Live your life to the fullest Mike.
I love this show, you guys are so authentic and you can feel it every episode
I'm so proud of you all. What you all did with the "Pivot" is phenomenal. The brand is so rich, relatable and real.
Out of body experience. Take care Mike
Thank you for allowing this young man to share his story! Powerful!
Wow... this interview is gargantuan. Thanks to Mike Hollins and everyone at the pivot for sharing this testimonial experience. Mental health is truly one of the most important things in our culture that we need to confront head on and conquer. This is one step toward achieving that goal 👏
Yall keep proving why yall are the best out. Every episode just keeps getting better and leaves us with a different insight. I send my prayers to all those impacted by the actions that night.
*WOW!! This is powerful fellas!* 🔥🙏🏾🔥
Born, raised, work and live in Charlottesville - UVA fan for life. Thank you for doing this episode.
The Pivot crew is AWESOME! I love this show!!!!!
The Pivot ladies & gentlemen… Wow♥️My prayers are going out to all the victims family🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Channing “tell us, what you would want to hear?” Glad we can hear some answers to keep our people going.
Ryan, Fred, and Chan...THIS IS SO GROUNDBREAKING!!! You men are so amazing and the PIVOT is truly changing my life! Please continue what you are doing. I Salute You!!!
Great show!!! Young man take it one day at a time. A day is only 24 hours. Tomorrow will take care of itself. It is now you getting adjusted to your new normal. Do not allow anyone to tell you how to grieve and for how long.
To all my brothers and sisters we have to be better, we will never prosper until we become better as one pivot keep it o😢😢
Ho Lord. I was crying, had to stop a few times when my throat got tight. And I'm alone watching this. I am not sure if the tragedy reached us here in England. I try not to watch the news, as it's usually petty political nonsense or foreign wars. All situations I cannot or know of no way to affect for the better.
I wish that young man all the luck with his future endeavours. I Pray he always finds the courage, intellect, and fortitude to wake up each day knowing there is a true purpose to his existence.
Bless the three of you. Well done, .....and don't stop anytime soon. You are wanted, are greatly needed, so much more that we realised.
These black men truly care bout the individual and there not just guess for views or clicks , but for healing growth and understanding thru a group process. # not alone
Charlottesville is my hometown born and raised and I never thought that tragedies like this would happen like this 😢
I’m so sorry Mike Hollins. No one should have to see trauma and tragedy like this. There is a lesson and plenty of blessing in this. Continue to grow, continue to tell all those you love that you love them. Continue on your healing. Please stay in therapy and trust the process. ❤🙏🏽
My nephew DSean Perry was tragedy taken on this sad day. I appreciate this platform for keeping the light shining!! ❤❤❤
Wow!!! Sending my love to this young man and his family and those that were affected. He has a tough road ahead of him with recovery, but he seems to be surrounded by so many great people and has already taken the steps to keep moving forward for himself and his friends who passed. Blessings to you young Mike!
I love this podcast.
Prayers up for you and all the families that were devastated. Pivot you guys are doing amazing.
This podcast separates itself one story at a time. The Pivot is my Fae Sports-driven podcast. The chemistry is undeniable
RC had me crying in the 1st 30 seconds. Great show, y'all. There really are no words.
RC said, in that moment you felt powerless, you were more powerful than him because of who you are. Something to that effect. I prob fucked that quote up. That got me. As a woman who's been in a domestic violence situation, that statement got me. Dammit, RC.
Peace and healing for this young Man. And the family of the ones that lost their lives.
Fred Ryan Channing this is not only a locker room it's a counseling session a healing session reconciliation you're teaching about love and forgiveness perseverance I am so proud of the pivot your presentation of humanity was amazing you guys are touching lives that reach farther than Sports you guys give people hope and you allow us to see ourselves that we're all no different than the next person our experiences are different but we all desire hope
Best question chann ever asked
I hope that courageous young man gets all the help and support that he needs to overcome and live a great life. That has to be such a devastating thing to happen to someone so young. One minute on a great trip, the next your best friend is dead in seconds for reasons completely unknown. I wish Michael the very best.
This dude is tough MENTALLY.KUDOS to him for being able to talk about this so soon afterwards.God bless him and he must know that God has kept him here for a reason.HE HAS A PURPOSE and I hope he finds what that is.
This really hit home my niece is a student at UVA and is very good friends with the team and was friends with all three who lost their lives and also with Mike I will respect her privacy and not mention her name cannot imagine what Mike is going through I will tell you my niece has left school and come home she’s a totally distraught and of course we have her in therapy she was very close to Levelle especially I don’t know if she will even be able to go back to campus never thought something like this would ever affect our family cannot imagine what these young mens families are going through and all of the students!! They were all a very close group of young men along with their fellow students! Mike is a brave young man who put his life on the line to try to help his brother! This needs to be a wake up call! The man who I will vote for the next president I hope will be one who makes addressing all of these shootings as his number one priority I don’t know where we start here I guess by putting a committe together to form tasks forces in every state and county in the country having all of law enforcement investigating all of students having special kinds of counselors in schools and colleges meeting with all students and developing open line of communication having them open up and letting them know we are here for them if they know of anyone who may be talking or acting in any kind of way that they may have anger issues and so forth or anybody they may suspect and asking them if they know of any students being mistreated or bullied ! These kind of committes are at least some kind of start showing all students their families and all of the citizens that were trying to figure out as we go how to get ahead of these tragedies before they happen Have students in each school or college have meetings as a group to speak out and band together! Having support groups throughout all cities schools colleges towns just attacking this violence together as a nation where we all bond together all races religions ethnicities minorities all banding together as one to protect our young children and also others meaning adults police officers all citizens of our country Dhowing there is strength in numbers showing we’re all Americans and we can work together and love each other! We need to attack this violence and get ahead of it and show that we can all come together as one and love eachother Don’t allow us to be divided by race or color ethnicity We are all the same we all need to show each other love and be family Remember this could happen to you or your child your brother your sister your mom or dad and affects us all The pivot has a powerful plat form Perhaps my brothers Ryan, ChAnning, and Freddie T could put it out there cause they will be heard and are very well respected I know as an American I would relish to be apart of attacking this and do whatever is asked of me! I love people and only see them for their hearts I feel we’re all the same and I feel by the Grace of God if we come together we can stop the hate and violence Just look what one young man like Mike did putting his life on line having the courage to go back and help his brothers he is young man who has shown us he was willing to do it so he got it started let’s let him motivate us to step up and do the same! Mike has the power of the Lord with him for sure one of bravest young man I have ever seen let’s show him he’s opened our eyes and shown us it’s time for rest of us to follow I am praying that change can begin I’m tired of watching the war within our own walls when we have the power to stop it! I guess that’s as much as I can think of for now I hope Mikes bravery can ignite us all and we can show him we’re willing to have his back the way he’s had his brothers back! I will be praying for you everyday Mike and I thank you for igniting a fire in me ! Love you brother!!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I'm praying for you, I watch the pivot podcast all the time and this has touched me in so many ways. Channing, Fred and Ryan, thank you and God bless you all!🙏
This is the reason I fux wit y’all boys. Bringing the real issues that need to be discussed and allowing a space for real people to do that.
Salute
My dad died 11/19/22 unexpectedly, and I feel this young man’s pain with the lost. Couldn’t imagine the circumstances, but God kept his hands on this young man for a reason. Ironically he is connected to RC and the pivot with such a huge platform, big things will come bc of this. Him just being able to speak about it has helped me with the first death my family has experienced! So thank you, young man.
God bless you on your journey of healing
My heart breaks listening to this young man and you can see how broken hearted that he is ..
Sending lots of prayers to Mike and everyone hurting & healing from this tragedy. Thank you, Mike, for your courage and bravery 🙏🏽.
RC has quickly become my favorite human besides immediate family. It goes back to his days as a teammate of ST. I’m a lifelong skins fan and admired him then, and his respect and admiration for ST. I’m the same age as Ryan and can only hope that one day I can be as well-rounded as him. ESPN better open up those pockets
This was a necessary conversation. Sending prayers and love to the 3 guys that lost their lives that night & praying for Mike to continue to recover. Ryan, Fred & Chan y’all are doing great work with this podcast. Keep it going fellas
I always listen to your podcast on Spotify. I was driving and listened to about 10 min of this episode and I couldn’t do it. I had to come to CZcams and see that man face because the energy was to much to just listen to. I love you brothas for this and please don’t stop ✊🏾
RIP Lavel. Your still our hero forever. RIP to the others also. Prayers for the families 🙏

This was so beautiful! Praying for everyone involved! Thank you Michael, Ryan, Fred T, Chan, Alicia and The Pivot podcast! Continue to show love, strength and gratitude to everyone! Michael keep striving and trusting God and trusting his process! 😢💙💙💙💙❤️💪🏽🙏🏽
I could NOT imagine something that traumatic, but who could unless you have gone through it, much respect and I pray you become whole mentally emotionally and spiritually again man.
We needed this. He needed to be heard. Another W! Ya’ll different! Levels on levels! 🔥
Happy Holidays to the entire Pivot Podcast team!
The 3 of you are the best at what you do. This conversation with Mike prove that. My prayers go out to Mike. And may he have success at whatever he chooses.
This gonna b DEEEEP 🙌🏽
This is the best of you gentlemen. I am proud of you, as a 57 year old going through grief like this with your boy Mike Hollins is highly commendable and an important lesson in communication during highly emotional situations. Well done on this episode/. You are definitely touching hearts in London. Thank you.
What a crazy, wild, sad tragedy. I hope you can find some peace young man. Definitely brave of you to share your story. Thank you.
Super proud of this guy! RC, Channing, Fred amazing way to display love and care for him through these hard times! Love this episode and can’t wait to see his big pivot after this traumatic experience ❤
May God keep blessing that young man. Again, thank you gentlemen.
Deep conversation about a tragedy, my condolences goes out to the family and friends of the victim's and I will continue to pray for UVA community.
God thank you for the gift of Mike Hollins. May you continue to cover him and his family. His light will continue to shine on!
This was incredibly POWERFUL! Thank you!
You guys have officially leveled up. It's time to move past just the sports and now all people. We would love this show on National Tv
RC said it and I’ve experienced things close to this when the unexpected happens, when I wasn’t supposed to be somewhere or somewhere I’d usually not go but god wanted me there for a reason. This young man spent the day with his friend on a trip that was filled and a spot randomly opened up because god wanted you to be with your friend one last time you went back that’s a true friend/warrior you could’ve left and been unharmed but you didn’t that all was GODS PLAN don’t ever blame yourself you did everything you could’ve possibly done. What a story man like a movie. Alhamdulillah 🤲🏻
I normally don't comment because this is a blessing! Prayers go out to the families! This is MORE than just a Podcast! God's hand is in this. Keep it going Gentlemen! Be blessed!
I salute Mike. True show of love, bravery, and unselfishness. God bless you young man.
This is a tragic event. It doesn't matter who you are, your station in life, or anything else life can take an unbelievable turn at any time. And we are
