- This battery charger is from the 1950's and I picked it up at an Auto Jumble. I decided to restore it and also fitted new terminals as the old ones were broken. I've ordered a new set of leads for it but they didn't arrive in time for the video. It does work but will probably never be used again and will be put on display. Hope you enjoy the restoration. This should be in a museum.for all to enjoy.!!
Superb job Martin!
Very nice job on the restoration. Looked like someone had done some work inside before based on some modern looking wiring.
The new red and black posts for the leads look very good.
I did enjoy seeing some old electrical components.
Dave.
Yep no doubt someone at least put a new mains cable in it, the rubber original would have gone bad, easco was liquidated in feb1963 so it's been around
Awsome! I realy love those old electric equipments!
Nice work Martin, looks fantastic. I see the screws in the handle put up a bit of a fight.
Amazing as usual! You are a true artist, Martin!
Awesome job restoring the vintage battery charger. Love the music at the end.
Curious how simply made the device was made. Nice work, and with new leads will be a good tool. Thanks for sharing this video

Lovely restoration 👍 but does it work? Of course it does! 😊
It looked like it had a smile on its face when you were done
Parabéns muito bom !
Bravo Monsieur 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Nice!
looks like your working on SpongeBob Squarepants head
Very nicely done. Be prepared...when that selenium rectifier decides to give up the ghost the odor it gives off as it smokes is absolutely awful. They rarely break out in flames but they overheat....destroy themselves and stink big time. Lots of solid state rectifier's available at a variety of amperage levels to repair the charger if/when that happens. I like the added touch of the fuse in the power plug. Good safety feature.
Fused plugs are required in the UK per safety laws.
I had an old Bosch charger with Selenium rectifier give its magic smoke. It’s pretty nasty. But one of the problems I faced was the that these high current selenium rectifiers are hard to find and quite expensive. Silicon rectifiers are easy to find and cheap. But their forward voltage drop is low when compared to higher voltage drop of selenium. Because of this these older transformers output 14VAC for 12V setting and 9VAC for the 6V setting. If you replaced with just a silicone bridge rectifier the output DC will be quite high.
It's definitely got more of a smiley face now!
WOW that is an old charger for sure. A bridge selenium rectifier setup, can't get much older then that. And you also can't get any better then powder coating either. And that is a huge current transformer as well. Looks like you could also adjust the voltage output via that wire-wound power resister if need be. Nice project Martin. Thumbs Up!
i can see a tv programme coming soon mint job as always martin 🔧🔧🔧🔧
Hi Retro Hax 👋👋👋 good to see you 🤝🤝🤝 very good restoration battery charger 👍👍👍
100% perfect restoration.
Greetings,, Kitty.
Thanks Kitty
Really nice restoration and a useful piece of equipment if you wanted to do some rust removal using electrolysis. Well done 👍
Brilliant work as usual! You found a therapist yet for your hoarder problem yet? 😂 😂
Masterful work, maybe you should get to know a props chap for the telly as they love to get their hands on really good period pieces like with Life on Mars there was a massive call out for 70's stuff and sometimes they just hire the bits for show so you prob could start a props business of your own :D
I did think of that
Gorgeous job! Truly makes a machine beautiful! I also think I am speaking for everyone in thanking you for saving Spongebob’s life.
Looks like the screws on the backplate may have been replaced at some point. It probably has had some repairs done to it in the past.
I really like it! It kinda has a "face" look to it. Great job as always!
I too have an old charger, it's really just a garage ornament, can't use on modern batteries, but they work forever
Why?
Jusb, is there a reason you can't use old chargers on newer batteries? (I have an old one here somewhere) Thanks
They used a transformer to convert the voltage so they almost work for so many years. Nowadays, companies use junk SMPS power supply instead which work for a couple of days.
@@Everythings_Adjustable old chargers keep rising the voltage, modern batteries are sealed, it raises too much and bubbles the battery and vents, some batteries are AGM and damaged beyond 15v
@@jusb1066 Years ago, when charging the older type lead acid batteries, my old man used to say it was good for the battery to let it bubble while charging! I don't remember having any problems with them.
It reminds me of one my dad had years ago he nicknamed it smiley
Yet again another great video
This is an excellent restoration as usual. If you plan to actually use it for something you should bypass the selenium rectifier with modern diodes since they tend to heat up and go up in flames unpredictably
It will not be used
No,it will raise the output voltage and overcharge worse
Great job, but why didnt you replaced the selenium rectifier with a modern full wave bridge module. Those old selenium rectifiers are faulty and put out a poisonous gas when they burn out.
It retains its original parts as it won't be used and is a display item now.
That is a wonderful restoration, the powder coating, decal reproduction, etc. You must have done it over several evenings. I have a 1960's 6 and 12 volt battery charger, its in good condition, I think it was hardly used and stayed in the box till I bought it. The clips are exactly similar to yours, with a black neg and red pos color inside a rectangle. Wonder if its the same make.
something you can try to mitigate that "pixilated" appearance when your printing out decals, try printing in "photo-mode" if your printer has that option. tends to give it a higher level of detail. ive seen Marty from marty's matchbox makeovers revert to that for waterslides for small fine-print decals on his cars. still a really neat resto on this. your videos have really been tempting me to look into getting a powder coating setup.
So this would be a 6 Volt charger ?
You could have bought the original " Bolt on rubber feet" through a musical instrument store. They are still used by many amplifier manufacturers
A very in depth restoration of 'spongebob' there!
Was there any manufacturering dates inside? That a 'selenium' rectifier used in there, a type used before the modern silicone diode ones were invented.
That thing looks for all that world like it should be a character in the cartoon movie: Robots. With the little red light right between it's "eyes" I see this new character as east Indian.
Super
If only you would have known, you should've did the SpongeBob theme song at the end lol, I can't believe how much it looks like it though, great job!
It looks like it shares its design with the Civil Defense 700 series of Geiger counters, also from the 50s
Nice one Martin. As a former sparky, do you reckon the transformer winding is still safe on some of these old items?
I have seen some where the coating on transformers had gone brittle from heat and just old age I guess 😀. Enjoyed the live stream on Friday. Bit easier to stay up and watch it here in Australia 😀
It will probably be a man Cave display item now
Nice item Martin...
You were right to choose a 5A rather than a 3A fuse for this as transformers are inductive loads...🇬🇧👍
