    I want to address the term "stopping power", as I use it a lot. Many times when I use the term, I get comments from people saying that they are done watching my videos forever because I used that term, and usually they will "inform" me that a gun cannot stop someone as to make them fall down instantly. I fully agree, but the term stopping power as defined by Wikipedia is the same definition that I understand it to be. Here is what it says;
    "Stopping power is the ability of a weapon - typically a ranged weapon such as a firearm - to cause a target (human or animal) to be incapacitated or immobilized".
    I fully agree with that definition, and I reassess that stopping power is a legitimate term. If it were not a legitimate term, than a .22 Short and a .44 Magnum would have the identical ability to stop a threat, which we know is not the case.

    Hi Sam, great video as usual. I know bullets are better today, but back in the day it was common knowledge that the 125 gr 357 round was considered the best bullet weight for self defense, not the 158 gr. During the 60's and 70's, when I was a cop, the heavier 158 gr was slowed and did not perform much better than a 38+P. Same issue with the .40. Our department (Arizona DPS) went to .40's in mid 90's and they gave us 180 gr rounds. All the information I could find showed that the 135 gr round was a much better round as the velocity was a lot better. Just one old retired trooper's two cents.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  Před 3 lety +6

      Yeah, the best round was the 125 gr sjhp. I'm just going by the fact that the original .357 Mag was 158 gr, so it's very common and a good balance for many uses.

    • @xxxYYZxxx
      @xxxYYZxxx Před 3 lety +5

      Thank you for this analysis and your credentials. I'm arguing all over the comments here in favor of lightweight bullets for high-pressure rounds like 9mm, ,357, .40, & 10mm, and heavyweight bullets for low-pressure rounds like .38, ,45 ACP, or .45 Long Colt.
      The crucial difference I argue is that low pressure rounds (can, ought to) use a softer lead alloy and thus expand well at low velocities, while high pressure rounds use harder lead, and thus only expand well/consistently at very high velocities. Some bullets are poorly designed, and any company could save money by using a .357 bullet for a .38 w/o using the softer alloy.
      I think the 158g .357 has plenty of velocity to expand reliably, at least a hot round should, but the 125g likely has enough penetration already. As I estimate, the 158g will perform better against barriers, soft "armor", or side/angled shots where extra penetration helps, and the 125g better with straightaway shots. It seems the FBI likes to err on the side of "a bit more penetration", at least with the 9mm, but I wonder if that even matters with 125g .357.

    • @perplexingperceptions8888
      @perplexingperceptions8888 Před 3 lety +4

      I don't believe 125gr is more effective than 158gr, a 158gr from a 4" barrel flying at 1,250 fps is going to stop any two legged threats faster than the 125gr.

    • @davidhechler5882
      @davidhechler5882 Před 3 lety +4

      @@perplexingperceptions8888 Today's bullets are better than in the past so the 158 gr is better. However, being a working lawman from late 60's through 80's when the 357 magnum was carried a lot, it was proven over and over that for self defense, the 125 gr was the best. Back then, most hollow points would not expand consistently unless the round was traveling at least 1200 FPS and most factory 158 gr barely reached that velocity.

    125g is known as the hot round for 357, if you stack them up again do the Buffalo bore 125g 357. Also when I had a 40 I inquired about the 40+p and I read numerous results of long term issues and certain guns not being able to handle them, not sure about all that though. 40 won’t ever be a full power 125g 357, but for those wanting more out of their 40, do like me and get a 357sig or 10mm you won’t be disappointed

Shot a .357 semi jacketed hollow point through my bedroom wall, travelled through my walk in closet, most of my hanging dress shirts, hit the support bracket of the clothes bar and split in two. Then both halves went out the closet wall and penetrated my heating duct in my attached garage. 158gr .357 full power rounds are relentless indeed. I wanted to see if I could decock with one hand like the cool guys in movies. Two lessons learned: 1) I cannot and 2) practice cool moves with unloaded guns.

I have seen deer taken at 100 yds with the .357 no problem and know of 150 yds. I have never been a fan of plus P or special kill'em dead ammo as "most" do not perform as advertised. Never been a fan of the 40 cal I think if you want to move up then it would be the 10 mm but it is really overpower for most applications. I think we live in a time when propaganda about performance and the desire to entice folks to buy new firearms is paramount in the gun industry, let's face facts the 38, 380 auto and 9mm are more than adequate for personal protection. And now the debate will rage on.

    It's not the round's fault that the Glock 22 shoots low at that distance. It's a combination of the Glock sights being designed to shoot low (I don't know why Glock does it) and, you did not seem to be using the trigger reset. By releasing the trigger all the way out, you are stuck with the crappy 5.5 pound Glock trigger. If you use the trigger reset feature (release only till you feel the click, and then pull the trigger again) your subsequent shots will have a real crisp 3 pound trigger pull. It takes a bit of practice to master, but it is well worth it. Great video. The .40 is a much better round than most shooters think. Actually, like a human sausage, size has nothing to do with it. Fatter bullets are less affected by barrel length compared to .30 cals (9mm/357sig). A G27 is often MORE accurate than a G23. A G30 in .45 is definitely more accurate than a G21, as the subcompacts have more sectional rigidity. However WEIGHT makes a serious impact towards recoil mitigation. The most accurate concealment .40 would technically be a Glock 29 with a .40 cal barrel conversion.

    • @xxxYYZxxx
      @xxxYYZxxx Před 3 lety

      Low-pressure rounds (eg .45ACP, .38spcl. .45 Colt) tend to work more efficiently with heavier bullets, recoil notwithstanding. Low-pressure rounds are fundamentally different than high-pressure rounds, due to the softer lead-alloy they are (can be) made with. A .45 ACP (or .38 spcl, .45 Colt) hollowpoint can mushroom at very low velocities, but not so a 10mm or .40 cal or 9mm or .357 mag. High-pressure rounds rely on velocity for expansion, low-pressure rounds rely on softer lead. Heavier 10mm bullets (185g) with moderate loading pressures expand unreliably, and the same for many .40 cal bullets. Virtually all .45 ACP rounds will expand above maybe 600 fps.

      @xxxYYZxxx Před 3 lety

      @@berettaxd7566 True, but the Power of each of those rounds is virtually identical. (Power = Mass x Velocity). Energy is Mass x Velocity^2. The purpose of squaring the Velocity is to derive an "instant", while Power is given over time (ie, Mass X Ft/Second).
      The difference between light & heavy bullets amounts to higher energy bullets dumping more power sooner, while heavier bullets retain more Power deeper into the wound channel. The bottom line is that "muh ft/lbs of Energy" isn't all it's cracked up to be.
      It doesn't make sense to give a "Power" rating, so Energy is the rating because it's given at an "instant" or point in time, not over some or another period of time.
      Heavy vs. Light is a tradeoff because if the round dumps too much energy too fast, it makes a big splash, but doesn't penetrate very well. Heavyweight .45 bullets tend to do their dammage deeper into the wound compared to lighter weight bullets, which is a significant bonus if/when barrier penetration is an issue. With .45, it's nearly a moot point, as 185g and 230g are both quite good, but with other rounds like 10mm, .40 cal, and 9mm, using the lighter weight bullets is more crucial.

    • @xxxYYZxxx
      @xxxYYZxxx Před 3 lety

      @@jorgesolis9468 10mm is a much higher pressure round than .45 ACP. The big difference is that 10mm bullets need a harder lead alloy, meaning they require high velocity to mushroom, while .45 is much softer. .45 ACP HP can mushroom at very low velocity, but with 10mm (and .40 cal, and 9mm), heavier bullets and/or light loads can yield inconsistent expansion.

Either they have proper lab equipment, or they don't. Also the FTF on the .40 S&W is concerning. That load may be a real problem functioning with a limp or weak handed grip. Real gunfights often require non-typical handling of the sidearm. You deon't always get to assume a straight arm, two handed grip, squared up against your target.

    I agree with you that the term stopping power is a little bit weak for any pistol cartridge.
    I would suggest that you use the criteria that has been known for years to be the most important at stopping someone from doing a nefarious Act. And it has nothing to do with penetration like the FBI so frequently likes to talk about. Don't listen to the FBI they know nothing of which they speak most of the time when it comes to understanding ballistics. The criteria is maximum permanent wound cavity. Furthermore, you have to use the proper gelatin mixture. I don't like gelatin tests, but it is consistent but the clear Joe is not indicative of projectile performance. I've never even envisioned the concept of being attacked by a bowl of jello. But maximum permanent wound cavity has always been the criteria that has been associated with one shot stops which is why the 357 125 grain hollow point has always been the King of the Hill and still is today it is also the second highest Firepower weapon on the street today, second only to the 38 Special revolver. Go figure I suggest you actually read the definition of Firepower before you think that a 19 round 9 mm has more Firepower than a 6 shot 357.
    You did not get less bullet expansion with the non MDF projectile, it went further and folded back more.
