    I used to drive Atkinson Borderers. My first atki had the 180 gardner with the Davy Brown gearbox. Wouldnt pull you out of bed lol then i got a 205 cummins atki which was a huge upgrade with the 9 speed fuller box then i got the 250 cummins. It went like shit off a shovel lol. We had 2 b series erf's at the time. I rated the gardner for fuel economy but for power i reckon the cummins had it all the way. Then i got my first seddon atki with the 250 cummins turbo. My first sleeper cab then after a while i had a rolls 290 seddon atki. It kept breaking down for some reason then in 1985 i got the 320 cummins seddon atki 401 twin steer. Back then she was the holy grail of the seddons. The erf, atkis and fodens were very underrated lorries but outlived scanias and volvos of their era

      @dorothybirkett2925 Před 5 měsíci

      Yes Hendersons had a garage at Alston, they had a petrol station on one side of the road and car repair shop opposite. Petrol station closed and the site was cleared some time ago now, a Spar shop is there now. The repair shop shut down and was sold about 2 years ago. The Henderson business is no longer in operation due to retirement of the owners.

    We had a few Rolls engined ERF tippers back in the 80's. Most of them wouldnt pull you out of bed but one in particular with a C series cab pulled like crazy and would embarrass some of our brand new E10's. Must of been a bigger engine than the others.

    Alan Butt had an ERF B Series TVH816T like yours he used for hauling gravel, a Clessie Cummins 290 twirling a 9 Speed Fuller Roadranger Box and double reduction Kirkstall Axle, before she was traded in for a Mk 1 DAF 95 on an 'H' plate, pity that old ERF,s rear axle howled, as for the DAF in the charisma stakes a bit of a let down .

    Folk used to say the eagle always blew head gaskets and leaked oil. Did they cure it with the mk3?

    • @MGWilliams
      @MGWilliams  Před 3 lety +2

      They were known for injector sleeve leaks and pre modification, oil pump drives and premature liner wear but not to my knowledge head gaskets. People knock them but Gardners and Cummins had their flaws too. Cummins 14s would snap head bolts and/or leak, Gardners absolutely love leaking oil etc etc. Only main thing against rollers was the cost of parts. Of course, regarding reliability this is depending who you ask as rollers were generally the money mens fleet engines as Gardner and Cummins had a following from certain operators meaning they got a bit more repect. A looked after roller was not a bad engine in my opinion this one is on a million miles, but its obviously had work in its 40 years. 👍

    @Draxindustries1 Před 3 lety +1

    Jack Richards had loads of these. Horrific things overall. Very poor cab build quality, wide panel gaps poor fitting doors, rattly windows, leaky window rubbers ect. Engines and gearboxes fitted were equally bad. Anything from the Eagle, Gardner, Cummins were all outdated and under powered. Some drivers seemed to like them but with many there it was all they were ever used to..

    Reliability issues must have been long since settled but in late 60s I was talking to a fire chief from Takapuna who said the R-R diesel in their main fire engine was rather niggly compared with the Detroit or Cummins offerings.
