  • Migrant workers are at the heart of realising Qatar's dream of hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup. But 10 years after FIFA awarded the tournament to Qatar, thousands of them are still being exploited by unscrupulous bosses.

I've worked as a road side automotive electrician in Muscat,Oman. My schedule was like ,
    6.30 AM - wake up,cook food,breakfast
    8.00 AM - start duty
2.30 PM- lunch(cook food), small nap
    4.00 PM- again start duty
    1.00 AM-3.0 AM- duty ends, Dinner(cook food),sleep
    6.30 AM- repeat
The duty was 6 days in a week, and salary less than 400$ per month.
Now I work in Europe, but I still think about the poor souls working in that hell.

I have lived I this country, and I have been jailed & deported from there in a ridiculous trial , and I have seen hundred of people deported without getting their salaries , and they are even beaten by police and forced to live the country without getting their rights . I can give my testimony for any organisation that can help these people to recover their rights or at least avoid it to others . This should called a world cup of slavery , which will be played on the thousand of workers who died in theses grounds . Of thousand of people who are jailed because of conflict with their sponsors . Thousands of workers who were forced to leave the country without getting their rights . International community should stand against this middle age country and show that they can not bribe and buy every voice which raise against them .

It's a wholly corrupt, spiteful, petty, back-stabbing & dubious country.....
Whilst I was there, one of my site labourers somehow managed to get himself arrested by the Al-Fazaa roadside on a Friday morning. His 'crime' was to purchase 8no. oranges from what the authorities considered was an illegal market of individuals selling fresh produce in the industrial area labour camps. (the source of the produce they were selling was the govt. subsidized food stuffs sold to Qatari locals who, despite their wealth & ever the traders they are, could not resist making a riyal or two by selling this produce at a profit onto their own domestic staff for re-sale...)
So upon hearing of his arrest & imprisonment I went to the prison (prison, not a police holding cell...) & much to the amusement of the prison's commanding captain pleaded for the labourer's release, but the arrest for this 'crime' apparently meant immediate deportation.
& sure enough, within 72 hours of purchasing a few oranges, the guy was on a plane heading out of Qatar & permanently blacklisted from returning there.
Oh, & my employer was furious with me for my attempted intervention, with the prison captain immediately telephoning my company upon my departure & trying to get myself into trouble also.....

The Qataris should hang their heads in shame....

Why don't they name the construction companies too who employed these labourers and the governments who have turned a blind eye from the alleged abuses!!! Name and shame the employment agents who exploited and made thousands of pounds in fees from these poor labourers.
These practices have been happening for decades not just for the world Cup in Qatar. The poor labourers are exploited in their own countries too.

    • @_Ben4810
      @_Ben4810 Před rokem +2

Amnesty did...their report of 2016 named & shamed Qatari construction & landscaping contractors & it had a massive & positive effect on worker's living conditions....
But, Amnesty was mired in their own internal staffing disputes & problems (all of their own making), & sadly the author of this report left the organisation & the subsequent Amnesty deputy director on Global Issues was highly ineffective, just wanting to play at being an ambassador with lots of irrelevant talking rather than continue the hard-hitting & successful reports....

I was held captive over there for three years and worked for 9 years prior to that. I contacted all Authorities & NGO'S including Amnesty( looking for medical assistance at the tim).
No nobody really helped instead trying to see if I have not any protocols. When they can't find any of what I have not done, they ask me what sickness do I treatment for? Hence I can't prove medicaly of my illnesses hence no doctor can treat me without QID, they just walk away.
Finally in 19th July I collapsed on the road side and paramatics had to take me. I was diagnosed with a kidney failure by living without AC in the summer.
Finally when I was trying to establish my medical rights, the CID put me in detention blocking me contacting anyone from the outside world and leftm untreated and without clean water for 34 days and sent me on fallse COVID test just in two hours from finally contacting my lawyer who got me the realese verdict from MOI. ( MOI release comes with a panelty on me hence labors dpt. have not solved it for 3 years. )

Most taxi drivers are living a vulnerable life due to their lease to own vehicles. When they are fully paid the sponsors dosent release the vehicle documents and send them to prison for possession of a unowned vehicle. Sometimes they even charge vehicle insurance/registration charges for the time the vehicle was owned by the sponsors. Then the government will keep them in prison at their own experience and send them back home with what ever they were wearing at the time of the arrest. They can keep them in prison up to three years & detention for maximum of one year before sending back so they will spend all the money they have in hand to do anything.

I can give my testimony for any organisation that can help these people to recover their rights or at least avoid it to others . This should called a world cup of slavery , which will be played on the thousand of workers who died in theses grounds . Of thousand of people who are jailed because of conflict with their sponsors .
