    Marco Polo Syndrome. The idea that you are going to be the first person to discover a place. You will meet a ton of expats in China with this trait, and they will often find tiny little cities to call their own. They often feel challenged or anti-foreigner when confronted with the fact that they are not the only ones there. Today we talk about this in depth.

Winston's videos are part of the reason that inspired me to move to China. It was going to be for one year and now it's five. Not sure if I can stay longer because of the strict visa laws now. But I love your videos, because they really do show it like it is, both the good and the not-so-good. Keep 'em coming, and ignore the haters. There's a kind of expat one-upmanship in Taiwan, and it looks to be much the same over there. Foreigners here are often not friendly to one another, often deliberately looking away or pretending not to see other foreigners in the street, even in places where foreigners are not common. Online expat communities are often cancer. I always called the phenomenon Robinson Crusoe mentality, but Marco Polo syndrome describes it aptly as well. Whenever I find myself criticizing another foreigner's Mandarin, I always remind myself that I've never actually listened to a recording of myself, so I might be even worse.

    • @neiana
      @neiana Před 6 lety

      People become expats for different reasons and they all think that their reason is fine, but in reality most expats think they magically found a paradise on their own and were somehow special in that regard. Once someone else shows up, the attention gets divided until expats become "normal". Once they're "normal" then it isn't special, or a paradise.
      We're weird.
      (but think about it... if we LEAVE somewhere to have a certain lifestyle, and then more and more people show up from where we left, then the new place becomes like the old place.)

      It's an easy question and a complicated answer. For starters commodity prices dropped and fell through the floor. They were investing in them before the crash of 2007. The state demands 7 % growth rates, and the norm is 2-4%, driving up inflation yet wages remain stagnant. Confucious ideas very much exist in China despite the communist revolution, and it is a caste system. The Maintenance business is not driven by free market prices, never has been and the wage for the cooli is determined by the state to control inflation even further. Their's lack of trained maintenance people and shortages due to outlawing guilds and unions.

      I am also interested to understand if there is some kind of widespread mentality that allows poor work to be done. Do the Chinese tend toward a "good-enough" attitude or any other general work ethic problems? I consider Chinese business and products unmatched in the world market place, with China doing things that are untenable anywhere else. And I have heard that president Xi is interested to overcome stereotypes and usher in an age of technological advancement and quality. This begs the question. Are quality and effort taught at home in China? How much does the majority of China care about it's output?

    For what it is worth I really enjoy watching everything you guys do. I'm 62 years old and partially disabled. Although I have had many adventures in my lifetime none of them involved living in another country. As I get older I really regret that I didn't see more of the world and now it is difficult for me because of my limited mobility. So, that said I live vicariously through your adventures and the adventures of a couple other vloggers in Thailand. Chances are I'll never get to China or SE Asia and the National Geographic sort of travelogues are just not how I would like to see the world. Not hating, but imho everybody that lives in a country for a longer period (>3 years) and/or is planning to stay there (you both are married to a chinese and at least winston doesn't seem to want to go back to south africa at any point) should get as proficient as possible in the local language. My english is sufficient for everything i do, but if i'd live in an english speaking country i would still propably turn to a professional to work on my accent (even though it is virtually non-existant compared to many others) and try to further expand my vocabulary. just my two cents.

    • @lenya2004
      @lenya2004 Před 6 lety +24

      Nobody cares if you think that foreigners should get super "proficient". Youve never done it yourself, you havent grown up in it. Winston is right when he says that it is enough to speak and read everyday language as long as youre not interested in ancient poems and shit. Whats the point proving your new neighbours that you perfectly speak their language? Youll be a foreigner to most anyway. Theyll never accept you 100%, youll never be one of them. Heck, not even your child will be 100%. Speaking 2 or 3 languages from completely different language-trees is not easy, its tiring and its not very common, thats why its ok not speak perfectly and seriously nobody cares if you have an accent or miss a vocab or two. So to this point it is just nationalistic idealistic nonesense youre thinking. grow up.

    • @ramonburgos6351
      @ramonburgos6351 Před 6 lety +4

      Most folks can't get rid of their accent because secondary languages learned after 4 or 5 years of age are learned in a different part of the brain. That part of the brain cannot identify accent while speaking.

      Charlene Sipp sounds like the voice of experience. Living in Korea, everyone expects that i can barely speak korean. When i do i either get patronizing compliments or people think it just coincidentally sounded like korean but must be english (?)
      I'm learning the language for fun but if you can order food, ask about simple problems, take taxis and give directions etc, you're good. You never NEED to discuss abstract stuff and even if you do most people will not take you seriously. I have a friend who's fluent in Korean, been here >10 years, works in a job using only Korean. He is still just peoples' "foreign friend" that they lose interest in when the novelty wears off.

The "Critical period theory" is rejected by almoust every linguistic researcher, there is just no empirical data for saying there is this one right age to learn a language. On the contrary, grown ups learn better, because the can enhance their implicit learned language skills with explicit learned grammer rules etc.

      china doesn't have so much money. They have tons of debt liablities. Some companies use the same "asset" to go to different banks for loans, then they sell the asset! There "shadow assets and shadow liabilities" all over.
      Chinese also don't build things to last. New apartments start to crumble and break in less than a year. Just because they have tons of housing doesn't make it livable or lasting.

In a language blackout, learning ANYTHING about how things work there were hard won when there were almost no prececessors. So hard won, that foreigners would get the new foreigner drunk in his first few days arrival, put him in a cab late at night, tell the driver to take him to the next town with no money, drunk and stranded. " resentment against foreigners always follows"
      Bear Arms, do you see the word "Westerners" in that quote from my comment? This is a universal human reaction to the influx of too many outsiders. There is a lot of resentment against Chinese populations in Southeast Asian nations. If millions of Europeans flooded into Africa demanding welfare, Africans wouldn't like it. If there were as many millions of US citizens in Mexico illegally as there are Mexicans in the US, Mexicans wouldn't like it.

    Am actually not into vlogging but I like to know more about China and your channel is way different than anything I have ever encountered. And both of you make things very interesting and fun. People's tastes are not the same especially that this show is being broadcasted to many audiences around the world not just western ones.
