  • how to remove rust with vinegar and rust-oleum rust reformer. This is to etch the metal to get ready for paint. It kills the rust so it can be painted. This process is best used on body panels with light surface rust to prep for primer.

Note that there are three different strengths of vinegar. Regular vinegar is 5% acidic. CLEANING vinegar is 6% acidic. Those two can probably be found in many grocery stores. Then, over at Lowes, there is an INDUSTRIAL vinegar which is 30% acidic. Now that might be a bit too strong but it's easy to cut it down just by adding distilled water. So, half 30% vinegar and half distilled water and you've got a 15% vinegar for cleaning rust.

For rust removal on door panels (and similar parts) I saw a youtuber spray on vinegar but he then layed paper towels over it and re-sprayed it. He then used a wire brush and water to leave it as bare metal. It worked incredibly, but everyone should "test" these methods on scrap before you ruin "the actual project".
I use 5% vinegar, giving rusty tools a 24 hour soak, but if I wire brush every 8 hours, I get even better results. After that initial process, I soak them again in clean water and add baking soda to neatralize the vinegar acid. Then I proceed to sand, then polish. Depending on the metals used in the making of the tool, I have achieved mirror finishes on forged metal and aluminum. The trick after all that work us to prevent rust from reappearing.
For that I use oils and carnuba car wax. So far, so good!

Vinegar is good. It's acid and it's cheap. Muriatic acid is much more aggressive and can be bought at most home improvement stores. Baking soda water is good to use with something as aggressive as muriatic acid to neutralize it afterwards. I like videos like this! There are products out there for metal prep that cost 4 times as much because they have a special name and brand name on the bottle. There are cheaper alternatives.

I found a cast iron skillet in the woods. I soaked it in Apple Cider Vinegar for about 3 days. I then sanded the cooking surface with a round orbital sander. My wife makes cornbread in it all the time. I left my Grandfather's pocket knife in a compost pile and found it a year later. It was rusty and ruined. I soaked it in vinegar and it is back to original condition. I wire brushed the floors in my old 1967 F600 farm truck, poured vinegar in. I wire brushed it again, followed by a light sanding then primer. Painted it and it is like new. Vinegar is cheap. It is actually good for you to ingest so it is safe to be around. It STOPS rust by neutralizing it. I put it in the chicken's water about every three months and they are all healthy.

I have a 2006 Grand Caravan, only 40K miles.. I got a few dime sized holes in rocker panels, so if I am going to save it, I need to neutralize rust in undercarriage before body work/paint. I can probably find a lift somewhere and do this vinegar trick, but if I am going to have undercoating applied after, should I neutralize with baking soda or just pressure wash? We have amazingly good tap water here, not unpurified well water..

removing rust this way requires a lot of steps and demands on your time and why are you diluting the vinegar, use it straight. but there are also easier and less demanding ways to deal with rust on steel. on smaller pieces like the one in this video just submerge the piece in muriatic acid for 15 minutes or so, it will come out rust free, rinse good and dry and you're ready for a good etching primer. for large metal surfaces get a gallon of Kleen Strip Prep & etch from home depot, for surface rust just paint it on and rust should be converted in a few hours without any any more steps, for heavier rust brush on a second coat a couple hours later and rust should be converted by next day, the stuff works awesome just make sure and wear gloves because that stuff will find every little cut and sore you didn't know you had....

vinegar is a good rust remover but it surfaces rusts extremely fast you need to clean it dry it and yes reform is the very best for a surface that you sanded or wire brushed off reform sprays out watery but it's very deceiving because it dry's thicker than what you thought you sprayed it's a very good product. I've had reformer on prepped panels waiting for finish paint ,for one and a half years and it's still like the day I sprayed it.And it dry's a very batman black.Kicj ass stuff.I pray every day Rust-Oleum doesn't change the formula.
also sand blasting is number one rust remover "period" but when you can't ...wire brush on a drill or wire cup on a hand grinder and Reformer does the next best job.
naval jelly and ospho is not effective in paint adhesion.

Vinegar is only 5% acid...adding water just dilutes it even more.

No dilution neeed. And put it in a bucket, don't waste time spraying it every 2 minutes. The guy in this video has his heart in the right place but his head is up his you know what.

It’s not a lost cause if you put some time in restoring it.
Yes there is a lot of surface rust and he has removed more panels than most people would even think to remove, but to get to the root of the rust issues, you have to go several extra miles to beat the rust!

This car was my father's first car as well as mine. I have all the panels replaced and found good deals on some other panels to replace the trunk. This video was to show how to kill off the rust. I ended up leaving this test panel outside for a year in the sun and it looked just as it did when I made this video.

Rayz28, That's about a year and a half.. How about, Keeping an eye on it and make a video on how long it takes for the rust to come back.. Maybe leave it in the Sun too, see if it's effected by UV from the Sun.. Do you get snow an ice where you live ?

    • @deanvigna7519
      @deanvigna7519 Před 4 lety

Kable you could not be more wrong. Although this is a waste of time. Rust is just like fire triangle. Need fuel an oxidizer and ignition. Rust need oxygen oxidizer and moisture. Take any one of the three away and you cannot have fire or rust.
