  • I've combined two separate videos I've created into one. The first is an in-depth review of the studio version of Ghost Love Score by Nightwish, and the second is a reaction to them performing it live in Wacken, 2013. I received many comments suggesting they should be merged, so the contrast between versions is that much better. Hope you enjoy!

    #GhostLoveScore #Nightwish #Wacken2013
Nightwish is a Finnish symphonic metal band from Kitee. The band was formed in 1996 by lead songwriter and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen, guitarist Emppu Vuorinen, and former lead singer Tarja Turunen.
Although Nightwish have been prominent in their home country since Angels Fall First, they did not achieve wider success until the release of the albums Oceanborn, Wishmaster and Century Child. Their 2004 album, Once, has sold more than one million copies and was the band's breakthrough in the United States. Their biggest US hit single, "Wish I Had an Angel", received MTV airplay and was included on three US film soundtracks to promote their North American tour. The band produced three more singles and two music videos for Once, as well as a re-recording of "Sleeping Sun" for the compilation album, Highest Hopes: The Best of Nightwish, before Turunen's dismissal in October 2005. Her last performance with Nightwish was during a concert recorded for the live album/DVD End of an Era. After the concert, the other members informed Turunen with an open letter that she was no longer a member of Nightwish.
Once is the fifth studio album by Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish, released on 7 June 2004 by Spinefarm Records in Finland and Nuclear Blast in the rest of Europe. It is the fifth and last album to feature Tarja Turunen on lead vocals. The album cost nearly €250,000 to make, (1,000,000 including the videos) which made it Finland's most expensive recording ever until the release of Nightwish's next album, As of 2013, Once had sold 2.3 million copies worldwide, becoming Nightwish's most successful album to date. The remastering of the album was released on 6 August 2021.
The song "Ghost Love Score" was described by Hietala as follows: "I'm a big fan of old prog rock and this is a song that has a lot of different parts going on, and different atmospheres in different places in order to support the story."

And then I listen to the live version from Hellfest in France and was blown away ..she sings the last part while the sunset was there and it is beautiful to see ..but all their songs are good and diffrent so yes it will be a journey for you . Tuomas is simply the greatest composer of my lifetime, and this song is adapted from the Richard Dawkins book of the same title, and tells the story of evolution of our planet from before the Big Bang to mankind's end.

Brilliant analysis of a great composition .Coming from the era of metal legends like Led Zeppelin Deep Purple Judas Priest ACDC Heart Metallica etc etc I can categorically state that no band has so many brilliant "Listenable" compositions such as Nightwish. Tuomas is a true master and Floor Jansen has become his instrument par excellence. I actually flew with my wife from very far South Africa to Gelsenkirchen Germany to watch Nightwish Live and it was nothing like i had ever experienced before.....hoping to hear from you doing more of Nightwish reactions again

Floor Jansen (Yahn-sen) stands a tad under 6-2 in bare feet, and she's wearing 4 to 5 inch heels here.....she's the Valkyrie Goddess.....Tuomas Holopainen (the Metal Mozart) is the keyboardist, co-founder, leader, guru, composer, lyricist, arranger, and producer of 95% of the band's music......audience was an intimate little gathering of 82,000.....this ENTIRE show is on both DVD and CZcams, under the title of "Showtime, Storytime"......there's a load of metal out there that you might not be aware of; bands like Epica, Jinjer, Kamelot, Amaranthe, Within Temptation, Sabaton, Wintersun, Lacuna Coil, Orion's Reign, Arch Enemy, Dragonforce, Imperial Age, Unleash the Archers, Lords of the Trident, Suite Clarity, Shield of Wings, Liliac...all of them are on CZcams, as many mistrust, ignore, deny, and refuse to deal with the smothering greedy, and overencompassing music industry a**holes....Nightwish Army, South Carolina, USA

That entire vocal ending didn't exist in the original version, live or studio. Floor Jansen developed that ending a few weeks after joining the band as an emergency replacement for Anette Olzon. "Please Learn the Setlist in 48 Hours" documentary is worth the listen to understand just how far she took this song in such a short period of time.
If you want to listen to her vocal range, I'd suggest "Disdain" by ReVamp, the band she created after her first band dissolved. From the vocal range perspective, it's far more than "Ghost Love Score".

The crowd didn't really know what to expect as this will have been the first time for most of them hearing the new (3rd) singer Floor, as she'd only joined the band a few months previously. At this point she wasn't yet a full member, just a stand in after they'd sacked the previous (2nd, Annette) singer. The album version you heard was sung by the original singer Tarja (also sacked amid high drama. They are one of Finland's major exports, so it was even discussed in parliament apparently)

  • @PomLimey
    @PomLimey Před 6 měsíci +28

    Awesome reaction!
A good analysis with well observed comments.
The studio version was with the original singer Tarja. The live version was with the current singer Floor Jansen. The part where Floor switched from the operatic to a growl in a matter of seconds and the epic ending were not done by the original singer. Tarja sung almost exclusively in an operatic voice. Whereas Floor can, and does, sing in any style. For that reason I only listen to Nightwish with Floor. I prefer to listen to their live performances provided they are official recordings. Although there are some acceptable fan shot videos out there. There is no difference in quality between live and studio versions.
If you like prog music you will love Nightwish.
Looking forward to your next Nightwish reaction.
    Greetings from the UK.

As a Floor fan 🙂 I only started listening to older Nightwish when the remastered version of Once came out. And although I like Tarja's voice in the studio, it was the sound of Emppu's guitar that struck me most. When listening to all pre Floor albums, you realize how the modest Emppu is responsible for that typical Nightwish sound. Nowadays the emphasis is more on Floor's voice (as it should) and the typical Emppu rifs are more in the background which he seems to be happy with....

    • @PomLimey
      @PomLimey Před 6 měsíci +6

@@zbygniewprlwytzkofsky6614Good points well made my friend! Totally agree about how important Emppu is to the band. Marco’s bass playing and more importantly, his bass tone (which is awesome) is also a big part of the Nightwish sound.

I totally get why Floor is more popular for lots of people, and she definitely is versatile. But to me, the flavor and timber of Tarja’s voice stands out. It has a unique and haunting quality even though the style remains the same (at least her work with Nightwish).

The second time was when I was first introduced to Nightwish in 2010, with the 'Amaranth' video (with Annette). Phil Collins is still my favorite male singer of all time. Although it took 40+ years, Floor Jansen replaced Ann Wilson (Heart) as my favorite female. Floor's cover of Phantom with Henk Poort put her over the edge.

Nightwish is incredible live but people tend to underrate their studio work. I'm with you, it hits different to be able to close your eyes and hear all the instruments and vocal parts, especially when it's as symphonic as Nightwish who are just excellent with their compositions.
Beauty of the Beast (Album: Century Child) is my most beloved studio work, just a small step ahead of Ghost Love Score. It's around 10 minutes long as well and beautifully melancholic and desperate. 🤲🏽🙏🏽
Before it was "My fall will be for you, my love will be in you, you were the one to cut me so I'll bleed forever" it was "Oh do you care, I still feel for you, oh so aware, what should be lost is there." Poetry ❣❣

I love Tarja's (studio version) and Floor's (live version )voices! They have magnificent voices. Plus, they are really great storytellers and they project emotions really well.
    Thank you (again)!
The live version with Floor is mind-blowing! The final note is one of the best ones out there!
Her ability to change her voice and adapt to any song she wants is insane. Floor has so many colours to her voice. Love it! She is the belting queen🥰
The studio version with Tarja is really, really good but I almost always, prefer the live versions with Nightwish (and with Tarja's solo career).... so in this case I prefer the live versions as well.
I love Tarja's more darker coloured voice. Her vast range isn't as apparent in the studio version as it is in the live version (from End of an Era).... plus she developed more stronger and darker chest voice after Nightwish, which I am a huge fan of😍

    Hello
Nightwish Army reporting from the Netherlands.
Welcome to the wonderful world of Nightwish.
    They are from Finland.
    And they make Symphonic Metal.
What you've heard here is just the tip of what this band can do.
Nightwish really hits you in your heart.
And that's what makes this band so unique.
Her name is Floor Jansen and she is Dutch.
    There were 82,000 people there.
I happily refer you to Gabriel Bardac's comment (he'll be here soon) for a list with lots of song suggestion.
Watch out for the Nightwish Army.

Love the dual videos. I listened to Nightwish back in beginning and have always liked them.
Tarja is an amazingly talented vocalist, but my taste found her accent a little thick.
Anette was also a very talented vocalist but I found her voice too soft, almost mouse-ish. Not a bad singer just not my taste so I gave up.
Floor was introduced to me 4 years ago and I was blown away. Suddenly all those songs I enjoyed but didn't love were presented to me with Powerful, solid, and merciless vocals. It was like discovering them all over again.
I would love to see you do
    Song of Myself
    Or
Sleeping Sun, really a vocal spotlight song.
I would love to see the studio vs Wakken 2013 live versions like this one. (Sleeping Sun isn't at Wakken but other videos of Floor singing it)
I think it's more rewarding to hear both versions like this, very nice.
I'm very glad I found this channel, I love nerding out over music.
Thank you for the videos, and can't wait for more 😀

I always believe that the Studio version of a song does never show the real quality of a band.
In a studio you can tweak for months to get something to sound near perfect, if not perfect.
But a band who can do what you hear on a studio album live and see them do it better live then on the album that says something about the quality of a band.
So many times I went to live performances that where just bad, if not in the stage performance then in the sound quality or they just play something that doesn't even sound anything like the original. I have seen band members that performed while being under te influence of I don't know.... something.
This happened so many times it has left me very disappointed in many bands and artists. I even walked out of a concert when I clearly heard autotunes being used.
I now only go the certain bands and artists which I know they give a performance with a certain quality and which love to play and perform live and not only perform just for the money alone.
And a band like Nightwish is such a bands.
For me the only band / artist that comes close is Pink Floyd / Roger Waters.
I would like so suggest you have a look at a Tribute Nightwish did for Pink Floyd with the Song High Hopes.
You will hear one of the other singers of the band Marco the Bass player he also has an amazing voice.

For me live version is sort of the "original" one, since this live version was my first time hearing this. I never was into Tarja's era of Nightwish, only heard few singles over the radio. My journey started when Anette joined the band and I was immidiately hooked when Floor stepped in.
Perhaps this review should have been made with Tarja's live version and Floor's live version.

👍I was thinking the same way,i'm not very much into traditionel opera voices (wich Tarja does) and like more the diversity and more modern classical aproach Floor does. Tarja is good, but for me,to much dramatic opera. This difference is very clear in live versions Tarja and Floor do of the same songs,it's just more surprising and interesting to listen to Floor for me,but i admit, sometimes i like Tarja too.😆🤘

Long term Nightwish fan here. I really enjoyed your insight. As always music has both an individual and to a lesser extent (in my opinion) a social or group element. Personally I enjoy going to live concerts best when I already know the songs (from the albums), thus I find your approach more real to my experience and to my approach to live music - but I am very happy that others will disagree. Literally each to their own. Take care and best regards from Scotland

I enjoyed your video. I'm 83 years old and only found Nightwish a couple of years ago so am mostly familiar with Floor's renditions. I think both previous vocalists were excellent but Floor is something else!
It's the first time I have heard the original and after hearing the Wacken one about two hundred times found it weak.
Incidentally, when your expert was discussing the various time signatures I think he missed the 6/8 segment. Just after the orchestral break the music has the familiar taa-te-taa-te pattern concomitant with 6/8 time. Apart from that, an excellent summarization.

@Music Kingdom: Hey bud! Nice reaction!
To answer your question, the entire reason for the fanbase going for the live performance first is because of Floor. Moreso than the studio recording, Floor has never recorded Ghost Love Score. The live performance also seems much more "filled out," in terms of sound -- which is needed, given Wacken is an open-air festival (to address the comment about the venue). It is not an arena. Nightwish in 2013 was the headlining band for the final day, Day 4.
However, Floor had almost a year to perfect this performance. Should you care to watch an earlier performance, Buenos Aires in 2012 had Floor perform Ghost Love Score for the very first time. Not to say she didn't pull it off, but as you have an ear for music, you will hear spots and parts that aren't as polished as Wacken 2013 is. The last part of the song, that transition into "The Note," some say is actually more emotional and fitting, given that I find it to be almost an emotional plea, not just because of the song itself, but a plea for the audience to accept Floor as Nightwish's lead singer, from Floor herself (think an audition show like America's Got Talent, in a sense).
However, what many Nightwish Army fans may not know or have forgotten is that after Tarja was fired in 2005, Tuomas wanted Floor as the lead singer then. He couldn't get Floor because she was involved with her own band, I believe After Forever, in 2005.
Now, Tarja, in my opinion, is not a bad singer, nor is she mediocre. But she isn't all that which Tarja fans crack her up to be. I've seen and heard Tarja perform (not at a concert; from videos and recordings). My biggest problem was her attitude, and how she carried herself in what I've seen. She has had some success with her own projects and collaborations, such as with Sharon den Adel and Within Temptation in 2014 for "Paradise (What About Us?)." But Floor, both in personability, as well as talent and skill, is undisputably better overall than Tarja was. She has much better control than Tarja ever did, and her vocal variability and versatility is much higher. This means that Nightwish can do more with Floor than they could with Tarja.
That being said, I highly recommend checking out Sabaton, a Swedish power metal band that sings about military history, and checking out their video, "Christmas Truce." Christmas Truce is about the Christmas Truce of World War I. As a note, make sure to play the video all the way through for a special vocal treat at the end of the video that I know you'll like!
Merry Christmas, my friend, and well done on the breakdown of Ghost Love Score! Cheers!
Edit: I am the 1,000th like on this video! Congrats on getting 1K Likes! 👍

As as music nerd, you might like to know that Tuomas plays around with time signatures like a madman in Ghost Love Score. You start of with two bars of 4/4 and one of 3/4, repeating through the whole intro, then one bar of 6/6 for the double triplet hits on the drum kit, and then through the rest of the song it varies between 4/4 and 3/4 almost continuously between each "Act" of the song. There are four distinct acts, and within each there are 1 to 3 movements. It's both in your face and very subtle, and it's easier to feel the change between each movement with the live version as Floor actually changes her stance, her voice, and her direction with each.

Like any modern live-performing rock band, Nightwish have a mix of shorter, harder songs and longer, more musically intricate songs. Of the longer, more intricate songs that I would recommend that you would enjoy (and that I would like to see you react to), "The Poet and the Pendulum" would probably be number 1. This almost always involves the live performance with Floor, which was shot at the Wembley, December 19, 2015 concert. The problem with an immediate reaction to this, however, is that the writing of the song was a deeply personal response of the lead writer, Tuomas, to the departure of their first lead singer, Tarja, where he fought off a deep depression and suicidal thoughts. The song is about those feelings. Many Nightwish fans (of whom you have already had experience) go ballistic if the reviewer is not aware of this background story. If you can do a small amount of research on the background of the song, however, you would be richly rewarded with both a complex musical structure, combined with some of Floor's best SOFT vocals, of course then mixed in with the standard hard rock and growling vocals. Of course with a more complex arrangement we are looking at a longer time frame: 13 minutes and 55 seconds. But if ever there was a song I would enjoy you (and the "expert", whom I also enjoyed hearing from) analyze and break down, this would be it.
CZcams deletes my comments if I try and post the direct link, but the title is: "NIGHTWISH - The Poet And The Pendulum (OFFICIAL LIVE)", with 6.2 million views, on the official "Nightwish" channel.

I'm not sure you understood that the singer Floor Jansen is a different lead vocalist in the live rendition. Nightwish has had three lead singers. The first was Tarja Turunen with how is the singer from the studio album the last album before she left the band or I should say was ousted from the band they had one other singer in between . Anette Olzon how ever Anette took ill during their tour of her first album and that's when Floor was hired initially as a fill in but Tuomas Holopainen ask Floor if she wanted to stay on with the Band and when she agreed Tuomas informed Anette she was not needed back. Floor has a lot more range then Anette and for the last ten mouths of that tour Nightwish was able to include a lot more of their older works from Tarja's time that Anette just could not do especially live and Floor even expanded on those as she can sing in my stylistic forms then Tarja can so for the fans experiencing these live performances, it was all very new again. Songs we had loved for years getting to here again and with Floor putting her amazing touch on them made the crowds so electric which only fed right back into there performance giving us this wonderful shared experience. It was a euphoric experience that I've only ever had with just a hand full of bands and I've been to more concerts then days in a year. Hope this back story helps. As for as the next song you should check out their live cover of Pink Floyd's High Hopes, You'll get a chance to here Marko Hietala the male lead voice and bassist. I'll let everyone ells direct you through their own catalog.

You could certainly argue that the original has a specific emotional purpose, its more dour, sad even, melancholy. Floors version is different from that, in that its more joyful and energetic. Its a performance. They both work though, so which you prefer may depend on your mood or outlook on life.

  • @littleraven28

There is a reason why fans request this version and I think by the end you finally understood why. The energy of the live performance is way higher than the studio version. Tarja, the original singer, for me always sounds flat and monotone in her singing this, while Floor uses multiple styles to tell the story of this song. Cause to me that is what she does, she tells the story.
As you noticed she also added a bridge that was not sung in the original and she added that belted note in the end.
I have seen her do this live more than once and it always hits me in a special way.
Nightwish feeds of the crowds and in every live performance they add so much joy and energy that almost every song is better than the studio version. BTW I know it sounds presumptuous but this whole concert is probably one of the best concerts ever recorded. Check it out and you'll see I am right. This was song 13 out of 15, and the whole concert is this quality.
Three last things, you did react to NW before from this concert when you did Storytime.
Also if you want to hear the musical composition you can listen to a version without vocals, it's out there if you look for it.
Last but not least, you sre asked to react to the live version but you scored the album version that was NOT asked for. They are two different singers and you said you missed some variety of vocals in the original, therefor scoring it an 8. But you didn't score the vocals in the requested version that does have these different styles...
Otherwise nice reaction, that's my 2 cts.
