  • Today I am beginning another huge series! I am so excited to dive into the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time and I hope you all join me as I start off with a movie reaction to Iron Man from 2008. I have chosen to watch through this franchise in release order, as I want to experience it the way everyone else did. I absolutely loved Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark and it was wonderful seeing Jeff Bridges in a role other than The Dude. Jon Favreau absolutely knocked this out of the park. Let the video play out to get my full thoughts and review on this film and thank you so much for being here!

The suit Obadiah built is known as the Iron Monger suit in the comics. Also, Iron Man WAS played off as Tony's bodyguard in the comics to protect his 'secret identity', but for the MCU, they figured his ego wouldn't let him shift the heroic accolades to some fictional person, and would reveal that he was Iron Man instead :D
The suit-up sequence in this is so satisfying, very mechanical and solid feeling :D

      @jspres86 Před rokem +16

Honestly, I loved that. That the MCU immediately threw the whole "secret identity" thing away. It was a refreshing idea for superhero films...for them to just say "Yeah I'm Iron Man. Deal with it." A concept that we will see evolve in later films.

Yeah, and it fundamentally changed the way the MCU would come to look. The script had his identity as Iron Man remaining a secret. The line was so perfect, and fit Downey's portrayal of Stark so well, they decided to keep it. Before that, the plan was to embrace secret identities for most, if not all, characters across the MCU. After much positive feedback on the movie's ending, they decided to do just the opposite.

Always down for an MCU reaction series; haven’t seen your channel before either! I haven’t heard of not having expectation spoilers before but that is a great idea! @@kaiielle Also just subbed and will make my way through the Star Wars content while I await more MCU stuff from here! The MCU is a mammoth task as there's so many movies. The only thing I would state is not a spoiler as such but as you get further into the movie series the Disney+ TV shows are worth watching in release order also. I never really find that with Star Wars it matters as much, but Kevin Feige of Marvel Studios does have a wider plan for both the shows and movies and it would be flawed logic to ignore that vision.
I'd say to ignore them all for now and we'll pipe up in the comments only when it makes sense to do so. Even reading movie and show titles sadly can spoil the experience, so, yes, go in blind and enjoy!
I like that you get instantly invested in the characters and understand their many facets; your emotion shows and of course good movies will give you the full spectrum of emotions you want from them, so hopefully with the large number of movies in the series many of them hit the right spot in that regard.
I hope that was expectation and other spoiler free enough! We just want you to get the most out of the series and I'm sure everyone is envious you get to see them all for the first time!

It was just such a smart choice in the screenplay to make him such a sympathetic character in the early origin part of the movie, and it the showing that Tony really cared about and relied and was saved by Yinsen that makes the viewer like Tony. It was the Yinsen character that gave the movie such a great start, makes the movie work.

Fun fact: The reason Tony Stark got a cheeseburger (specifically a Burger King burger) is that Robert Downy Jr. credits Burger King with his reason for sobering up. The story goes, RDJ was driving along the coast one day, with a trunk full of drugs, and was hungry, so he stopped at a nearby Burger King. And he got a burger. And when he was having the burger, he realized he didn't enjoy int. In life, there are times when just having a silly little fast food burger in a fast food join should just taste good when you are hungry, and drugs had destroyed that for him. And so, he went out, drove down to the beach, and threw all his drugs into the ocean, and started on the road to sobering up. And him getting a Burger King burger in his first major role back was his way of saying thanks to Burger King for giving him that epiphany.

  • @CaptainAmercia
    @CaptainAmercia Před rokem +11

Origins (Earth-616) - Earth-616 is pretty much the main comic universe that began all the way back in 1939 and is still going strong today.
So Iron Man first appearance in Tales of Suspense #39 in March 1963, and received his own title in Iron Man #1 in May 1968. I'll not go into comic history beyond what you see in the film as the MCU does draw from it in future films. But pretty much his comic origin is not that different to this film the only big difference being the time period as Tony was testing new technology in Vietnam instead of Afghanistan.
In Vietnam Tony was hit by a piece of shrapnel from a booby trap. The shrapnel was lodged near his heart and without help, Tony would die. Tony was when captured by a communist leader and imprisoned, forced to make new weapons for the overlord similar to what you see in the film.
Professor Ho Yinsen is also imprisoned as well like in the film and together they built the first suit of armor that would become Iron Man. Professor Ho even made the chest plate of the armor with a device to help Tony’s heart keep beating. Tony used the armor to escape but in the process, Professor Ho sacrificed his life to give Tony the time to charge it to full capacity an element also used in the film. The Earth-616 and movie origins are pretty much the same, MCU just modernized setting it in the late 2000s instead of the 1960s.
Ultimate Universe (Earth-1610) - Modernized reimagining of the Earth-616 universe like a reboot starting in 2000.
It's similar to what the Ultimate Universe did in the year 2000 kickstarting a whole new comic universe that was meant to reimagine and modernize Marvel character origins for a new generation. They wanted to return to the golden age where they could showcase these characters as flesh and young again while also mixing some things up as this is a whole new universe anything could change. This started with Ultimate Spider-Man in 2000 which brought Peter Parker into the 2000s and is to this day one of the best comic book series of all time. then Ultimate X-Men in 2001 and finally The Ultimate's this universes version of The Avengers which is... pretty messy and yeah alot of edgy stuff that tried too much.
Like the film Ultimate Tony became Iron Man in the 2000s but slightly earlier in 2001. But unlike the MCU and Earth-616 counterpart the Ultimate universe Tony never got hit by shrapnel instead he was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. This encouraged Tony to use the time he had left to put his resources to use for a better world so he created a temporary cure in the form of a mixture of bio-tech and armor. This is just one example of how the new universe changes this around, some good changes that were pretty cool and some really bad ones.
The MCU in general pulls the best from Earth-616 and the Ultimate Universe for example the origins and plotlines of the MCU along with the visual designs come from Earth-616 while the MCU also uses some elements from Ultimate universe such as Nick Fury being played by Samuel Jackson, Nick Fury of the Ultimate Universe was based on Samuel Jackson while Earth-616 Fury looked more like David Hasselhoff. But overall MCU has far more elements from Earth-616 while also being it's own thing.
    Legal Stuff
I'm more of an X-Men fan myself but Iron Man and stuff like the Avengers are still really fun. Side note but if you ever get around to X-Men just note that they're set in their own universe for legal reasons. Pretty sure Marvel and Kevin came to Fox in hopes of bringing in Fox X-Men characters into the MCU as cameos but this never happened.
In the comics Spider-Man, X-Men, Avengers, Fantastic Four, etc. All of these groups and character existed together in Earth-616 and any other alternated universe. But Marvel in the 1990s sold a number of their movie rights to different companies with Sony getting Spider-Man along with any related characters such as allies and villains while Fox got the rights to X-Men and Fantastic Four. So when the MCU came around in 2008 with Iron Man Marvel could not use any of these characters in this say a future movie. So the X-Men movie continued on throughout the 2000s and 2010s with no connection to the MCU and so did stuff like Deadpool and Spider-Man.
    Nick Fury
So that whole end scene blew us all away. It pretty much went "Okay so remember all those comic book characters... You could see them on the big screen". There's also a deleted scene where Nick mentions this "Radioactive bug bites, assorted mutants" a reference to Spider-Man to Mutants. X-Men but legal reasons they no doubt had to remove this as Sony owned Spider-Man and Fox owned X-Men and the term Mutants.

While IM is a core Marvel Comics character, the general audiences didn't really know who the character was. But they seemed to hit every beat just right. Don't worry the Sam Rami Spider-Man film are there own thing along with the Amazing Spider-Man reboots. Those two franchises take place in their own separate universes under Sony outside of the MCU within the Marvel Multiverse. Sony made a deal with Marvel so that they could feature a new Spider-Man in the MCU but originally Marvel planned on having Andrew Garfield as the MCU Spider-Man but this never happened. If Spider-Man 4 was never cancelled maybe Toby could've been the MCU Spider-Man as well. Deadpool 1 an 2 takes place within the Fox X-Men universe and the third film will take place in the MCU, recall back to Deadpool 2 where Wade got his hands on Cables time watch thing which allowed him to travel throughout time. No doubt this device would also allow the user to travel between different timelines and universes so maybe Deadpool and the gang teleport to the MCU and just decides to stay there.

This movie was something of a cinematic miracle. It started out with a screenplay that pretty much everyone working on the movie hated so they threw almost all of it out. The main players involved would get together in the morning and basically decide as they went along how the movie would take shape and there was a lot of improvisation. Out of that chaotic mess emerged a great movie that launched a ridiculous monolith of a cinematic empire. A huge amount of credit for the entire MCU has to go to the people who worked on this one because it was them that made this movie the success that it was and without that there would be no MCU.

Us older nerds LOVED the fact that the origin was a note for note copy of the comic book origin from the 60's. The only difference was the war was Vietnam. He was injured during an in theater weapons demonstration and kidnaped by the enemy, he was saved from death due to shrapnel in his heart by a captive doctor who sacrifices his life to get more time for the suit to boot up. It was great that it honored the spirit of the comic.

You did a really good job anticipating plot twists, such as Tony using the original arc reactor in an emergency.
RDJ was an excellent choice in that he _was_ Tony Stark in many ways. Downey spent a fair number of years partying & taking drugs before he cleaned up. Ironically a Burger King cheeseburger was part of his "aha!" moment.
Most folks don't understand how publicly owned corporations work. The trustees have a fiduciary responsibility to the stockholders, and a drop like that seriously damages their portfolios. Fun Fact: most stockholders _aren't_ rich; a large part of the traded stock is owned by middle class individuals and pension funds. Stane actually had a financial responsibility to shut Tony out ir order to protect the company. It's not "his," because it's a publicly traded corporation.
A note about weapons sales: American weapons sales overseas are strictly controlled. There's no way bad guys could just stock up on Stark munitions. That's one reason the F-22 had such a short production run. Congress was so paranoid about the high tech in the plane that foreign sales were, in effect, prohibited.
Other Jeff Bridges roles? Two of my favorites are Starman and TRON.
Favreau also directed Iron Man 2. He was cast in PCU as a stoner, and was part of the great team (Favreau & Filoni) that has created The Mandalorian.
Look forward to your next MCU reaction.

I think watching the movies and shows and whatnot in the order of their release is the best. It's the easiest, for one thing, so you don't have to sit there with a spreadsheet trying to figure out what to watch when. Also, the movies tend to "explain", elaborate on, or otherwise build on the ones released earlier, regardless of where in the in-story time-line they take place.

The first two Iron Man movies also feature uncredited contributions from writer/director Shane Black. Black shot to fame as writer of the first Lethal Weapon, and went onto direct several other popular action movies, my favorite being the over-the-top classic The Long Kiss Goodnight, starring Geena Davis and Samuel L. Jackson. He was friends with Downey, who had a very public battle with substance abuse in the late '90s and early '00s. Downey ultimately did jail time for his drug use, and when he got out he was considered persona non grata in Hollywood, so in 2005, Black wrote him a starring role in his crime-mystery-thriller-comedy masterpiece Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. The movie was a cult hit at best but it revived Downey's career, and led to this, and that partnership is the reason Downey brought Black on board. After his work punching up the first two, Black wrote and directed the third Iron Man movie (my personal favorite of the entire MCU, which may be controversial, but I will go into that when you get there). I also think you'll like LKG and KKBB, as well as a film Black made after IM3 called The Nice Guys, if you liked the writing of this.
If you want to dive deeper into Jeff Bridges' career, he did a lot of great work in independent movies from the 1970s and 1980s. My guess is that many of his films will be too obscure for a reaction channel (I can't imagine anyone ever recording a video for the scathing drama Cutter's Way), but a couple that might go over well are his re-teaming with his Lebowski directors Joel and Ethan Coen on the remake of True Grit (sorry to any John Wayne fans, but anyone who's read the original novel will know how much more faithful the remake is, in all the best ways), and his cult classic TRON, featuring some of cinema's first-ever CG animation.

It’s fascinating to watch you when your brain starts cooking.
Btw, Yes, The golden curls look very becoming on you. 🔥 🔥 🔥
As for the content, with all honesty I usually skip most MCU reactions because they tend to involve long term commitment and there are so many others doing it and getting caught up in it, but I think you’re doing it at the right time when a bit of the hype has died down. (Case in point, even with the most impactful and influential of franchises, a great reactor doth not one make. When it comes to just being charming and aesthetically pleasing to the eye, or having a fancy editing style and a meme cut every three minutes, I don’t think that’s enough for the granted expectations of a loyal fan base of long term followers. But you bring more than those things. I think that your intelligent, thoughtful commentary combined with your witty humorous analysis brings something different to the table, so MCU or no, I think I’m here for it.

Don't worry too much about people spoiling things. Everyone wants you to have fun going through the discoveries in the same way we did too. They just want you to have the background info so you can notice easter eggs too!
With that; please do consider following along with the other Marvel franchises too! Sprinkle in the other spider man series (the 3 Tobey, 2 Garfield, and a really fun Into the Spiderverse, as well as 2 venom movies) Also the X-men films would be great too (there are the first 3 with Patrick Stewart, then some more with a younger generation (the First Class series) with McAvoy, plus some other spin offs, including ones with Wolverine and others with Deadpool.) Plus there is also what I call the NMCU (I don't think anyone else calls it that), but it is another series on Netflix, in particular, DareDevil is REALLY good, and is the one to start with in NMCU.
Surprisingly, Agents of Shield doesn't have as many easter eggs. Although, it is still fun in its own way.
If you want to have additional... fun? maybe consider some of the older ones, more so to see just how far Marvel has come, like The Hulk (Eric Bana), Fantastic Four, DareDevil (the one with Ben Affleck). They aren't necessary, and didn't really age that well, but maybe interesting to watch knowing that going in?
As you can see, there is a lot of great marvel material out there! I hope you consider these things, and have fun!
