The director of this film, Louis Letterier, said that he wanted this film to be structured similarly to how the Hulk TV series was; in the sense that it was a “man on the run” on a quest for a cure.
There are a few call backs and references to moments, scenes, and characters from The Incredible Hulk TV show. The most notable moment; one that wasn’t featured here, would be the appearance of Lou Ferrigno (the original Hulk) as a security guard who got bribed by the pizza Banner was delivering.

Although there are creatures and beings out there with a higher base strength than Hulk, his true power is that his strength is fuelled by his anger and has no limit. The angrier you make him, the stronger he keeps getting.

FYI: Lou Ferigno, who played the Hulk in the TV series, cameos as the security guard given the pizza. Bill Bixby, who played Banner, had already passed, so they paid tribute to him by showing Ed Norton's Banner watch him on TV. The "You wouldn't like me when I'm hungry." line is a comical takeoff on the commonly used line in the TV series, "Don't make me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry."
Enjoying your reactions to this series.

Hull just turn back into banner once his anger subsides or he falls asleep. When you saw him get "cured", he slowly transforms back to Bruce. That's how he goes back and forth. Anger creates the gamma pulse that turns him into the hulk, emotions like love or tranquility will transform him back into Bruce.

    • @tofu_golem
      @tofu_golem Před rokem +2

False. Hulk has dissociative identify disorder (at least in the comic books, although nothing I've seen in the movies refutes that). He turns from one to the other based on which personality takes over.
Generally, when Banner gets angry or is in danger, the Hulk personality takes over. When Hulk is no longer in danger, Banner comes back. This is often how multiple personalities works: certain personalities are created to deal with certain kinds of trauma. It's not the danger that causes the transformations, the danger causes a different personality to manifest, and one of those personalities has superpowers.
It's possible that the movies will not choose to go this route, or may choose to ignore this character detail, but so far it looks to me like this is the case.

As already said by others, Lou Ferrigno, the bodybuilder who was the Hulk in the TV series of the late 70s/early 80s, made a cameo as a security guard on this movie.
What WASN'T said yet is that the instructor that slaps Bruce Banner at the beginning of the movie is Rickson Gracie, a Brazilian former fighter at the origins of the UFC, and son of Hélio Gracie, one of the founders of the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu martial art. Rickson was a fierce fighter back in the day, very famous for going his entire career undefeated. He even once challenged Mike Tyson for a no-rules fight, boasting he would win (Tyson declined to accept).

A lot of people assumed that the Hulk was based on Dr Jekyll and Mister Hyde, but later, Stan Lee revealed that the inspiration was the Frankenstein movie. Specifically, Stan Lee felt sorry for the monster when the villagers were chasing him.
Yes, Bruce Banner's blood is incredibly dangerous and everyone is after it. It can give random superpowers, or make people sick. It's one of the awful things Banner has to deal with.
This might look like a spoiler, but I promise it's not. It's something comic book readers know that the movie makers keep in mind even if they have not yet directly used this in any of the movies. In the comic books, it was revealed by a psychiatrist named Samson that Banner has dissociative identify disorder. Hulk is a personality he created to deal with abuse as a child. When that accident happened, Hulk got superpowers and the Banner personality didn't. So far, this detail has not been officially revealed in the movies, but several things have hinted at this part of his story.
Anyway, it is not actually anger or danger that causes the transformation. Anger or danger triggers the manifestation of a different personality, and THAT causes the transformation.
In the comic books, Hulk and Banner hate each other and fight over who gets to manifest when. Sometimes they come to an agreement. The one rule between them that always holds is that they never hurt someone the other loves. No matter how much or how little they hate each other, that rule always applies.
It's a detail that the film markers know will be in the minds of comic book fans, so they hint at it from time to time. I have no idea if they ever plan to deal with that side is his story in the movies.
Abomination is weaker than Hulk, but he has combat training.
Hulk gets stronger the angrier he gets, but that's the rub: angry people don't think as clearly. Someone who is sufficiently strong, but has advanced combat training can exploit that.

"HULK SMASH!" is sorta The Hulks signature line from the comics. I don't think it is much of a spoiler to say it comes up routinely around him. And the recap thing at the beginning I think was more of a nod to the fact that this story has been told several times in several movies and TV series, so, they didn't have to go too in depth about it, and are telling a different story.

Hulk from 2003 gets a lot of crap from a ton of people but I do personally think that it's far better than people give it credit as it tackles issues that never really gets talked about in most superhero films. While it's not directly tied to the MCU, it does share some of the same canon as the comics, which obviously is where much of the MCU takes its story ques from. I do think it's still worth a watch.

During the battle on the campus, the two students watching from the tree are Jim Wilson and Jack McPhee, characters from the comics and the television show. The former was a sidekick of the Hulk for a time in Las Vegas. The latter was a reporter who worked for a newspaper who chased stories about the Hulk, believing he had killed people in his first appearance. [In the 70's, they were not going to have the army chase Hulk across the US. They saved that for the 80's when chasing the A-Team.]

    Hi, great reaction, thanks.
You asked about what triggers the Hulk's transformation into Bruce, so here goes what I know. These are not spoilers, this is just what comic book fans know about the character. The Hulk is a separate personality from Bruce, (Stan Lee had Stated that his inspirations for the Incredible Hulk were a combination of Dr Jeckyl & Hyde and Frankenstein, so it's safe to say that there are multiple personalities at play here) so techically Bruce "comes out" when Hulk let's him back out. Usually it's when the Hulk calms down, or goes to sleep, but in the comics (Not the MCU) Bruce has escaped when the Hulk has been distracted. And that's as far as I can go on the subject without giving up any spoilers.

  •  Před 2 měsíci +3

Ironically, Blonski is actually stronger than Hulk. This is due to Hulk's natural ability, which is not transferred to Blonski. In any "do or die" situation that the Hulk is in, his strength will increase. So while Blonski started the fight out stronger than Hulk, by the end of the fight Hulk was actually the stronger one. Blonski came out at full maximum power, while Hulk started out at like 10% power and was probably about 60% of his max potential by the end of the fight.

So, as far as the 2003 hulk movie goes I’d say it’s not necessary unless you want to see ONE OF the origin stories of the hulk (by no means is it the original origin story) but it’s in no way connected with the marvel cinematic universe (mcu) whatsoever.
THIS movie however was a real treat to see in theaters. Most people didn’t know about the end credit scenes yet so if you saw tony stark in a hulk movie it was definitely worth talking about (& going to the theaters again just to see it in case you missed it). It’s probably one of the most hated mcu films (mostly from the toxic fandom imo) but I like it because it’s what really made the mcu into the mcU.

In Hulk's words "The madder Hulk gets, the stronger Hulk gets." Hulk's strength increases as he is tested and he has no upper limit. The only way to physically beat Hulk is to knock him out before his strength increases. Either that or calm him down to weaken him.

It's not really addressed much in the MCU, but Banner's Hulk states are physical manifestations tied to his DID. The one typically just called "Hulk" by other people is referred to by his system as Big Guy, since almost all of the identities manifest as Hulks. In fact, Dr. Leonard Samson (Ty Burrell's character who was dating Betty) is their therapist in the comics and discusses the system at length.
Also, in the comics Betty IS the original Mr. Blue. They changed it for the movie, but left a bunch of hints about her being Mr. Blue only to have it be Sterns instead.

The reason for the rushed intro is that there had been the pre-MCU film, "Hulk" in 2003, directed by Ang Lee. So between the comics, the 1980s TV series and the film only five years earlier, it was thought that most of the audience had a general idea what the Hulk was and they only needed to sketch in the tweaks for the MCU story (military program rather than an accident) later on.
Not that they didn't know they'd get some new viewers. It's completely not a shock that Betty is General Ross's daughter to comic readers (while some films compress years of comic development [Happy and Pepper don't appear until the 7th Iron Man story; Jim Rhodes didn't come along until the 1980s], Ross and Betty were in the Hulk story from day one), but they do a good job of hiding that reveal from movie audiences.

Hey there Kaiielle ;-) Subscribed after watching your Iron Man reaction and been dipping into your catalog of reactions. Great reaction on this one. Little back story for ya, no there won't be spoilers. Marvel Comics almost went bankrupt back in the 90's. They sold the movie rights to a lot of their popular characters to stay afloat. Which is why you see different movie companies putting out Marvel characters in the early 2000's. The Hulk rights were bought by Universal, which is why it's so different from Iron Man. It was made in Association with Marvel. But not solely by Marvel. It's considered Canon for the MCU, but also some fans consider it it's own individual thing. This is only the 2nd movie in the MCU and as you can see the story telling isn't bad. Characters have heart. And as the movies go on, world building and character layering gets better and better. You've opened yourself up to a big universe that will have lots of OMG's, laughs, tears and sheer wonder to it. Can't wait to see and hear your thoughts and opinions as time goes by. The Hulk is a result of Bruce Banner's experiments with recreating the Super Soldier serum from the 1940's that was lost, and using gamma radiation to trigger the effects. This resulted in unleashing Bruce's repressed childhood anger over his father beating his mother (eventually, to death) in a physical form: the Hulk. That's why when he gets angry, he loses control and this alternate personality that was formed from childhood rage takes over and transforms his body. Stan Lee meant it to be a sort of Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde type story.
And I gotta tell you, there's something appealing about just letting go of all your worries and anxieties and becoming a giant green rage-monster :P
The line "Don't make me angry; you wouldn't like me when I'm angry" was a callback to the original TV show from the '70's which was it's tagline. Lou Ferrigno, the bodybuilder that portrayed the Hulk in that show, is the security guard in this :)
In the comics, Emil Blonsky is known officially as the Abomination, and Sam Stearns (Mr. Blue) becomes Hulk's greatest nemesis, The Leader, whose exposure to gamma made him hyperintelligent and able to shoot gamma blasts from his hands.
The thing about Abomination too, is that he's about twice as strong as baseline Hulk. That's why he's mopping the floor with him at first in their fight, but as Hulk gets angrier, the stronger he becomes (it's theorized that there is no upper limit to his strength depending on just how enraged he can become), so as the fight goes on longer, the odds shift in Hulk's favor

Regarding your critique of the love story, there are over 30 mins of deleted scenes. Most of which deal with the boyfriend, One of the issues with Norton and Marvel is that Norton re-wrote the entire film and much of his character-building work was cut out and Norton wasn't given any credit for his writing work. Mainly as a response to the backlash of the 2003 film.

We know from Captain America & Red Skull super-soldier serums amplifies your base personality, so the untested super-serum warped Blonsky’s mind into NEEDING to fight bigger and badder opponents, until as the Abomination he just attacks everything

So, for this movie feeling like it is from a much earlier time than Iron Man, I think that has to do with the fact that this one wasn't made by Disney. Heck, for a long time, this movie wasn't even on Disney+, because they didn't have the streaming rights for it. The whole IP rights with these Marvel characters is messy. Fox was _super_ stubborn for a long time, not letting any of their stuff even be mentioned by name in the MCU. However... Disney now _owns_ Fox, so that simplified a lot, and means that a movie coming out (hopefully) in the near future, which was a fully Fox-owned property will now be part of the MCU. Not saying which one, just that I'm very excited for it.

The actor that portrayed the Hulk in the TV series did a cameo as a security guard in this movie, as well as using his face as the Hulk and him doing the Hulk grunts, etc.

The key thing with Hulk is that he doesn't start out as the strongest character: Blonsky (the Abomination) and even She-Hulk are stronger than Hulk ... at first. But the angrier the Hulk gets, the stronger the Hulk gets. The rule in the comic book is put him down IMMEDIATELY, or don't try to fight him at all, because once a fight gets going, Hulk's strength climbs beyond everybody else (stronger than Thor, etc_).

So unlike Iron Man who is more inspired by his main Earth-616 version the origin story of the Hulk featured in this film pulls heavily from Earth-1610 also known as the Ultimate Universe but puts a spin on it that connects it to Earth-616 as well. The Ultimate Universe origin has Bruce Banner being commissioned by Nick Fury to recreate the Super Solider Serum which didn't work as planned and instead turned Banner into the Hulk. Visually the MCU Hulk looks like his Earth-616 counterpart as the Ultimate Hulk was very different having Gray skin instead of Green with a few other changes as well to his character.
For the MCU Banner Is also trying to recreate the Super Solider serum but instead of Nick Fury it's Ross hoping to recreate it. This fails, and the exposure to the gamma radiation causes Banner to transform into the Hulk. They pretty much pulled the Super Solider aspect from Ultimate Universe and then exposure to Gamma radiation from Earth-616. We don't really see his origin in this film but that's the general backstory we're given in this film.
Earth-616 Bruce was bombarded with a massive dose of gamma rays while saving Rick Jones, a kid who was out on the test site. This was cased by a Gamma bomb which is pretty much a nuke with extreme amounts of Gamma radiation fitting the whole 1960s Cold War setting.
Overall fun film that is greatly overshadowed for a range of reasons. I'd say a good 50% of the MCU fandom forget that this film even takes place in the MCU even though Tony Stark shows up at the end.

So, aids in why one of them was done better than the other. Luckily, Fox studios isn't really part of the equation moving forward in the MCU. Nobody comment to this about the other s**t show of a studio that produces a movie every couple of years for the MCU, because that could potentially give away some characters to her.
