How is Highway Riding on a Can-Am Ryker?

  • Many viewers ask about if the Can-Am Ryker is up to the task of tackling highway riding. I personally don't come from a background of riding other motorcycles, but my Ryker Rally with 900 ACE engine has handled itself spectacularly for me on local highways. I do recommend approaching highway riding with caution, but not fear. Work up to highway rides at your own pace and wear protective gear when riding. Let me know in the comments about your experience with motorcycle riding on major highways. Feel free to share your tips with other riders, that's how we build an awesome community!

My first ride on a Ryker was about two weeks ago when I bought one for our son and drove it 100 miles home from Iron Pony Motorcports in Columbus, Ohio. You are absolutely right, it takes a little getting use to.
I've ridden two wheeled motorcycles since the 1960's and about three years ago we had to go to a trike (HD) due to my wife's health issues, she's battled cancer eight times, had 12 surgeries in ten years, maxed out on chemo, radiation and cyber knife treatments. She is currently on immunotherapy treatments and will be every 28 days for the rest of her life. She currently can't walk even with a walker. This past Summer she would walk out to the garage with her walker, climb upon our trike and we'd go for a ride when ever the weather permitted. We rode over 10,000 miles this year. We use to ride over 15,000 before all the cancer treatments ruined her hips.
The Harley trike TOOK SOME GETTING USE TOO! Harley trikes steer hard and will wear you out in the twisties. The Ryker 600 is much much easier to steer. I enjoyed every mile on the Ryker even though it was dark, raining and 52 degrees (F). After about fifty miles I learned if I just pull back on both sides of the handlebars ever so slightly there was NO twitching and it drove straight as a poker. I rode at 65 to 70 MPH most of the way and I'm sure it will do 85 all day long comfortably. anything over that I'm afraid would be pushing it a little hard.
We bought the Ryker 600 ACE for our son who use to ride a two wheeled motorcycle until he had a stroke which crippled his left side. He can no longer operate the clutch or shifter on a regular motorcycle. The Ryker is the perfect choice for someone like that. I'm sure he will wear a smile from ear to ear every day next Summer when the weather is right.

Pretty amazing to read a little bit about your family’s story on this Christmas morning. Inspires me to keep going when things are a little tough. rejji7 what’s up..... only the rally edition sits up a little more higher. My 600 handles potholes very well. I would say this..... if you’re going to finance it I’ll pay the extra $1500 to get the 900 (payments shouldn’t be that much more) I think it’s worth it because they are so much fun and having that extra speed is worth every penny lol. I only bought the 600 because the 900 was sold out but don’t get me wrong...... I’m totally satisfied with my 600. I also have a Camaro ZL1 and a Lexus coupe and I must say the ryker is my best purchase yet by far.... it’s like riding a go cart on the streets. I hope this helps. I have had years of experience riding on interstate highways on two wheels. I have found the Ryker to handle very well. I think some people tend to maintain too stiff of a grip on the handlebars causing a very jerky ride. My 600 is perfect for a grumpy old man. 😁

I'm also coming from two wheels to three (vertigo). I do find the lack of power steering to be a bit unnerving, but at the same time, it's not like the motorcycle is just gonna suddenly veer way off center. I've been paying a bit more attention to my car at expressway speed and notice that it too does sway. It just takes getting used to. Quality of roads makes a big difference as well. Florida's roads are FAR better than Ohio's.

After riding motorcycles for 45 plus years, I can say that the Ryker does feel a bit darty at higher speeds especially when there is wind involved. But as you talked about in your video, you get used to it after a while. It's part of the trike's personality and, once you've learned how to control it, adds to the overall experience. I love it. It's so much fun to ride. Honestly, more fun than any motorcycle I've ever ridden. And the attention it attracts is a bonus. Mouth open "What is that?! It's so cool!" from total strangers is a regular thing. Good topic to address. You did a fine job.

WeaverWrestler thanks for the production compliment! I try to get better with every video. Thanks for watching it!
The Ryker definitely isn’t a touring bike, but I do think we place too much weight on that term nowadays. People have been doing tours on bikes with many less creature comforts than even the Ryker for years on end. I personally don’t find myself fighting with the Ryker on the highway, but I’ve felt that way on a day with winds 20+mph. So I get that it’s a valid complaint, I just don’t feel that is true for me on a daily basis.

I don't own a ryker or any motorcycle. I'm a small person an not that strong, but when I seen a ryker It gave me the idea maybe I can ride. My question is, since it doesn't have power steering an it has two wheels up front.. how much force does it take to steer? I'm not very strong, an I'm curious if it takes alot to do turns.. or if I'd get worn out fast.

FaceFabLLC I love my top case. It’s the LinQ SR21 Tunnel Bag. It has a bigger opening than the standard Ryker top case and I think it is just larger in general. Only drawback is that it not lockable, but that wasn’t necessary for my uses. I often pick up dinner for two or a small load of groceries no sweat with this setup.
As for waterproofing, I’ve ridden in pouring rain and it kept things inside of it very dry. I’m all about versatility, so I also have a dry bag and cargo net that I use if I have my passenger seat installed for a particular reason.

Travis Villalva While it is more work than leaning a 2 wheel motorcycle into the corners, I’ve heard many riders who live in the mountains say that twisties are actually a place where the Ryker is the most fun. On a small scale, I’ve felt that. There is a road near me with two quick back to back corners like a snake, and I always have a blast maneuvering through it. I honestly wished I lived closer to some nice windy roads. Thanks for watching!

Now stranded, I called the BRP toll free road service. The flat deck came and picked up the machine but not me. Still stranded to find my own ride, not impressed.
