ILLEGALLY Removing them. Destroying Our Waterways!

- Abandoned crab pots litter every water way I have fished! So sick of losing lures and finding dead marine life in them I took the chance while the fishing was slow to start making a difference in helping to remove the neglected pots from Beelbi Creek just out side of Hervey Bay. It was one of the worst creeks I had seen in 3 years of fishing and made me upset seeing them ruin such a pristine location. You are not allowed to touch other peoples crab pots but in this case I think common sense should take over. I pulled a total of 10 pots in three hours out of the creek and couldn't remove many more that were too stuck to move. We only managed to remove pots from a small portion of the creek however they are littered all the way up. I don't feel like made a difference but I'm hoping this video inspires more people to start taking them out. Thanks for watching guys if you enjoyed it make sure to give it a like and comment and I'll be sure to make to make more videos like this in the future!

I live in Hervey Bay and I'm so glad somebody else is doing this. I've cleaned both Burrum and Mary river of abandoned crab pots and many occasions. Great work bud 💯
If they’re not marked they’re considered illegal
Yes but if people were allowed to remove abandoned pots they can just grab any pot they come across and SAY it wasn't labelled.
yeah little timmy is playing water cop. he shouldn't be doing this.
@@jinlim6575 yes, we mustn’t break rules. there’ll be no pudding if we break the rules.
@@AaaaNinja Yes, but if it's abandoned who's to claim it's not yours?
If removing abandoned ones is illegal then there’s something wrong with the system.
It’s great that your removing them.
You did right man. Here in the US where I live, we actually have a day set aside where groups of volunteers go out and do the same thing. We got well over 300 of them last year.
That is amazing bro good job
Depends on the state, but in general, yeah - you have to be a registered volunteer in FL though, and it's done during a 'closure' period, so any pot left in the water gets pulled, and the owner gets fined if the pots/traps are in the water.
However - if you mess with one and are not registered to do it, and/or are pulling them up outside of the closure - you get charged/fined (even if it's washed up on the beach).
You're supposed to report that they are there and abandoned. Yeah, I know. Overworked Fish & Wildlife staff don't have time to go check every report. There's gotta be a better way.
I’ll throw ya a decent patreon commitment if you keep it up
I’ve one Timmy. I sometimes get rid of old pots and you’re 100% right, they are too cheap and many people just leave them behind when the weather turns bad. I hope the back lash isn’t too harsh, but there should be a law that allows derelict pots to be removed by the public.
Let me guess?? The next vid will have you casting from a wheel chair!! The ol back must have felt it the day after.
phenomenal!!! loved it mate, true blue Aussie Spirit, picking up the rubbish, helping out the blokes at the ramp.
You're a legend mate.
Honestly loved his Vlog!!
Surprised other crabbers don't clean this up, because isn't this practice like shooting yourself in the foot? (Abandoned pots result in less possible catch for anyone else. Not to mention all the other problems it causes.)
Onya mate. The bloody things are everywhere and often have fish etc stuck in them. They do my head in aswell.
as bad as those shits that poach pots.
@@ccleadge I think thats part of the problem. People try and hide their pots then cant find them so they end up abandoned.
@@TheLureProject. for sure mate. i have also had pots emptied and moved or all together nicked, even had one where my float was cut off. SE QLD
Good on ya Timmy, that's a true fisherman... looking after the environment 🤙
Really impressed how stable your skiff is. That's a really good design.
Good on you Timmy , thanks for bring awareness on this issue .
good on you mate for doing this. You have set a great example for others to follow.
Hey searched your website where are you based can’t find it
Mate... You are a bloody champion! An outstanding, and selfless act..
Thank you.
I live in Canada and I doubt I will ever fish this river but good work must be acknowledged so...
Thank You!
Your a bloody legend/comedian timmy if only there where more people like you! Love your vids mate!
This is awesome man! I know here in most of the US, they have to have a degradable panel that will fall apart if it's left in the water too long. That way the crabs, fish & any other critters can get out when it degrades and it will no longer be able to trap anything. It still doesn't solve the problem of them littering waterways & damaging boats that hit them or stealing fishing gear from you if you get snagged on them.
Great work Timmy, however also good job on the skiff build because you're pulling damn hard on the rope and it showed no stability issues at all. That's a good test right there.
Good on you mate! These things sh#t me to tears, glad others are also cleaning up our systems. Keep it up!
Here in FL the solution has been to require bio degrable doors on the pots so if they're lost they can't kill more crabs. Also they close the season for a week every other year to legally remove pots. And you can register for the clean up if you want to volunteer to clean up the pots.
Just want to add that bio degradable doors and sizing rings are common practice on the alaskan crab fleet as well.
Its good to see someone trying to make their environment better. Good on him, and your laws are insane. Context must always be applied./ Were you harvesting someone elses pots? or removing degraded gear that is far past functional from the water column.
One makes you a slimeball, the other you are captain planet.
People need to remove those traps on the last day of crab season period.
I honestly really appreciate these kinds of videos just as much as your fishing ones. You keep up the good work and we'll keep on watching Timmy.
I don't know what the laws are there, but here in Florida after the crab season closes, the Game and Fish Commission will fly over all coastal areas and find and mark all traps still in the water, then they come back on boats and pull them. Being that all traps are required to have a tag attached with the owners license number they will send the owner a nice hefty fine, somewhere around $500 each I believe. if the owner doesn't pay they can't go crabbing next season.
By the way, the method commercial crabbers use to pull a "mudded in" trap is to pull all the slack out of the rope and wrap it around a cleat, then wait a few moments and let the motion of the boat moving up and down slightly, work it free, it actually works surprisingly well with a bit of patience. It also saves your back!
The bad thing is that they,(the traps) keep catching fish, and crab for many years and they just die in the trap and rebait it. Not to mention if you hit one whilst running across a flat, when the tide is low, at speed, it will bring you to a very abrupt STOP! Ask me how I know, I've been thrown clear out of my skiff before due to this.
Glenn James our crabbing is all year round but our pots are meant to have id tag and a float i think any found without that should be fair game for removal the sad part is we can be fined $1200 per pot for touching a pot that is not your own and this stops people removing old pots
@@tishbrett I must confess, here we also have similar laws. I don't know what kind of fine it would be, but I do know that it is well advertised that if caught pulling someone else's trap that it is a felony offense. So we have very similar issues. Although, the fines incurred by one that leaves a few traps in the water at season's end keeps most crabbers on their toes around here and because of this there isn't too many unclaimed traps in our water, at least not compared to how many are out there in season.
It definitely looks like you guys have a problem with unclaimed traps down there. Hope you get it sorted, sooner than later.
After rereading your post, if we find a trap here with no tag or float, I don't "think" there are any fines for removing them. That's kind of a sucky rule that don't make a lot of sense. Which we have plenty of also. Good luck!
And watch out for those random traps!!
@Glenn James - Great news . We don't have much in the way of crabbers on the PNW Coast , but our dive club has pulled in literally thousands of pounds of float nets . Some tagged and many not tagged . We have a nice data base going and even have death threats = We must be doing a great job .
All the best .
@@tishbrett $1200 bloody hell! whats wrong with the system? does anyone know if any fishing clubs do a Crab Pot Roundup (in the name of common sense and the environment). I'd like to be involved in that. You could always make the argument that its your pot in the fist place. surely the fine for an unmarked pot is less than removing someone else's pot. Either way bloody rough!
Bradley Dopper the fisheries do a clean up in river and collect 100s of unnamed and ghost pots but are under staffed and doesnt happen often enough and public/fishing clubs cant touch them but only report them
Thanks Timmy
Queensland Fisheries are you listening: Ghost pots are a big environmental problem. Fishos are ready to help but we need the appropriate legislation.
Thank you for doing this, young man. Too many irresponsible people around to have left so many abandoned traps there. God Bless you!
Awesome what you’re doing out there brother! Keep up the good work man! So awesome to see someone using social media presence to show the good we can do! Good work brother. Looking forward to the next one like this
Well done mate your a legend.
Thank you for keeping the water ways clean and healthy 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
may be illegal, doesn't mean its wrong! Good work! Maybe hook it, tie off to a cleat and hit reverse!
Only thing is if there is enough sand covering the basket the cleat will rip off almost any boat. Slow and steady is the only way to pull them out if old set pots. Or they are destroying the pot and not 100% effective.
Great stuff Mr Turtle. Crazy how many have just been left.
I really enjoyed that show was not subscribed to your channel until today love the fact that you actually do something about the environment instead of just talking about IT and you help people at the ramp too that's a good job buddy
Native American here, and a hunter/fisher, good here, you would be welcome state side, the world needs more sportsmen like you!
I think you've done a great job, mate. My former partner n I used to put some pots in that creek. Once the rope came untied n our gaff hook was too short. We went back about a week later n got it.
good vid timmy and great job cleaning up other peoples mess
Best video ever! 👍 👍 👍 You just earned another subscriber. I love cleaning around the shores here in florida in the U.S. Its a very rewarding feeling just know im doing my part in preserving and protecting our natural eco systems for the next generation of watermen and women to come. Great content for a slow days fishing .
Good on you Timmy and Co. Always leave a place better than what you find it. Well done and a lesson for all. One Love and Tight Lines to ALL.
Good job Timmy. If only everyone were as conscientious.
I don't know about the legality of this, but morally and ethically you occupy the high ground, here! Good on you!
Excellent stuff mate glad to see others caring about our environment. Love the videos keep it up!!!!
You are a hero man! May all your viewers follow your example collecting all those garbage . I will certainly do. Great video!
Classic Turtle -I didn't think this through ahahaha , really awesome job Timmy keep up the good work bud 👍
The world would be a better place with more people like you.
Rick Fisher agreed
I've some doubt about that !!?
@@patrickmihajlovic4112 then you are stupid
You’re an absolute champion Timmy.
Well done for taking the time.
They are a menace to the fishing community.
Great work mate, love your vids keep them coming
Bloody champion mate, you deserve a cold beer for each pot you clean up 🍺
Awesome stuff Timmy 🙌
Love your work, Timmy!
Solid effort mate. I think its too easy to turn a blind eye to this garbage in our waterways.
Great work guys! !! Love the video ☺👍
On ya mate! I think it’s a bloody good idea you come up with, that if you remove 10 abandoned crab pots you should get a 1 free new one. Something the government should get behind!
Keep up the good work Timmy!
Chanzie25 people could start knocking off new pots with floats had a lot of pots stolen over the years
@@zekelawson6987 Why knock off 10 good pots for 1 brand new pot. Might as well just steal it.
Also, i'm sure you could just reject pots that haven't been marinating in the water with algae
if you you pull up 10 crab pots you actually get 10 crab pots 😽
Don't get the government involved! They will probably put you in jail and find a way to tax you or fine you. Less Government is good government.
I agree mate! each state fisheries should show some incentive and hand out free 12 month boat rego or free 12 month fishing licence for every 100 GHOST POTS collected. By the way, if more fishing clubs got behind GHOST POT removal, I reckon the state fisheries would be more inclined to do something about it. Cheers for a great suggestion!
Your a total legend mate, although i was waiting for you to lay a Mr. Whippy at about 8.20
Fantastic! Keep up the good work! And Thank You ! 😊
Great work Timmy, legend!!
“Houston we have a bogie” haha love it
This is my biggest pet peeve
Ran over one in the tinny coupla weeks back, lucky to get away unscathed
Good on ya timmy !
Your doing good for the environment some people may think you taking homes from fish and crabs but creatures can get stuck and die in the old nets so great job keep it up and I wouldnt even mind seeing another video
Legend. Awesome work man!
Well done buddy. Saving the crabs and lures.
This man is a legend.
Would love to see some more vids like this one! Great work 🐢.
Thanks guys keep up the great work👍
You should do more of this sort of stuff
good work Tim, I've saved a few cod trapped in abounded crab pot's. The problem is they are like Ghost net's. The keep catching and fucking up our ecosystems. love ya work mate👍
Very thankful, for you doing this. More people should do this.
Good onya Timmy! Hope the fishing picks up!!
"I popped me button open on my shorts!" demonetized!
I'm from Maryland and I live on the eastern shore , commercial crabbing is a big industry on the Chesapeake bay. There are thousands of old crab pots out in the bay. there's a "round up" every spring an we pick up tens of hundreds. If there identifiable by a fixed tag the owner gets a fine.
Good on ya turtle. Need more blokes like you doing there bit for river systems. Well done brother.🤙🏾🤙🏾🎣🎣
Hell yeah timmy, you're a legend mate!!!
At exactly 4:20 you can see the button bounce down and into the water, just in past the crab pot.
Go fishing for the button Timmy
Atrocious. Turtle littering the water ways. Shame on him. He needs to be stopped.
Yeah Timmy doing Australia great mate keep up the good work
Best video yet mate. Kudos
Timmy is on the ball as usual. Good on ya mate 🤙🏻👏🏻
Done well mate I do same thing up here in Mackay when I find them love the vids u do 👍
Some days all my banks at Donnybrook are lined with floats, a small tinny with just 3 people in it can have 12 pots out, they are a pest and it needs to be dealt with..
Your not wrong...
U dont own public banks
Good one Tim. I used to fish Beelbi 30 years ago, great place!
I don't comment very often on youtube videos, but this one deserves it. You're doing great by cleaning up mate. Keep it up, and thanks for caring.
Well done mate, keep up the good work.
Maybe severe fines like in the thousands for leaving these behind with their names on them.
It should be a law that they be dated as well as ownership. That way it’s fair game after a set length of time.
Glad to see you giving back. All fishermen and people who hike should pick up a little bit on the way out just to give back
Good on ya Timmy, deadset legend cleaning up the waterways. Keep up the goodwork :)
It’s been a pretty hot winter aye. I even went for a swim this winter
Not wrong mate good short's n shirt weather
Hey Timmy... where is this mate would love to head up that way and remove some myself
Great effort fellas. Love your work!!
Good on ya mate! Keep up the good work. cheers!
Great job there young man! More people should help clean up the waterways.
You're going to need a bigger boat Timmy .
Nice one Cobba. Bloody proud of you.
Thank you for helping keep the waterways clean!
EPA should shout you some new pants mate 👍
*news flash* over 400 mud crabs reported homeless after timmy turtle removed their oceanfront homes.. 😁 lol jks mate good job 👍
Right on man! Nice days work for a good moral reward. Just subscribed.
Good Job! I love seeing people cleaning up our waterways. Bravo!
Abandoned crab traps are perpetual killing machines. Dead crabs become bait, attracting new crabs who die because they can’t get out.
If they don’t put a decent float, ID tag or whatever else is used, stuff them, remove the pots
Good work Timmy. Massive thumbs up to you mate 👍
Good work mate!the world needs more people like u!!!
Timo you're a fucking legend doing this man. This is the kind of thing I wouldn't mind doing if I had a skiff and the fish weren't biting. Great job keeping our water ways clear man loved the vid
Keep your tackle in yah pants 😂😂
Absolutely brilliant job mate. 👍 Well done.
Good work mate! Your a champion!
