I always remembered Pachirisu surviving the Draco Meteor but I just had to rewatch that part of the match because I didn’t remember that it had damage from rock slide before that. That makes the little guy’s bulk even more impressive.

He was specifically the best partner for Gyarados that didn’t have any common counter in the meta at the time (they were playing with Regional pokedex). It worked specifically because it was offmeta. Some people at the time didn’t understand that it was a very calculated pick, not a “I don’t care about the meta” pick.
Some people refuse to understand that to this day. What’s even more surprising about the Pachirisu pick now is that Grand Finals featured no Mega Gyarados or Gothitelle, a testament to how well Pachi could support the entire team
I remember it so well and it was so hype when we watched it in college. Though tbh, one thing i really hated about this was the aftermath because alot of people will always use pachirisu for comparison about how they're favorite or weak mons can do anything but then when others try doing it in practice, it fails miserably. Just some players will not understand completely the nuances of the competitive scene and also use it as a crux for bashing other types of play like smogon even more.
I mean smogons format is frankly kinda awful Singles is a limited battle format in strategy, which leads to a ban of certain utility moves for being a problem, or a meta that limits general creativity Or in the case of natdex, just a mess where the entire idea of smogon being somewhat balanced gets thrown out the window and every tier has absolute problem mons
I wish I had even an ounce of this intelligence and skills needed to even enter the championships. The people who make it are so incredibly talented and genius. I’m in awe whenever I see them battle against each other. Always pulling out moves I couldn’t even think of.

Maushold is better than pachi, friend guard is better than volt absorb, it has thunder wave, super fang, taunt and its faster than pachi, so you can use fast super fangs.

I wouldn't call Follow Me "niche". Many pokemon only have viability because of redirection. The ability Volt Absorb and moves like Super Fang for reliable damage and Nuzzle for para I think helped a lot too in that meta. Saying it was all Follow Me is cap.

I’m pretty sure it’s the opposite dude, it became his favorite because he used it to win. He used it for the exact reasons this video said: not because it was his favorite but because it paired so well with the team he was building (mostly focusing on the funny water snake.)

I love this Worlds Finals so much, its the match that got me into competitive Pokemon almost a decade ago and turned Pachirisu into my favorite mon. I love making teams with overlooked mons that have specific niches to them because of this match.

Pachirisu has good support moves, Follow Me, Nuzzle, encore, and Super fang for decent damage without great stats.
In that meta, it also sometimes ran Ion Deluge. +1 Priority move that turns normal moves into electric, letting it dunk on Mega Kangaskhan
