    The live version was their first ever performance of the song. They arranged and practiced the performance in a week. Just. One. Week. Harmonies, runs, the theme break, everything. That they managed this performance in so short a time is hell impressive. The studio performance was months later, so no surprise they polished the performance somewhat.
    Oh, and F#1. He can go lower. Tim's lowest chest note is a nice, clean F1. He can growl out a B0. His falsetto tops out some 5 octaves up from that.

You’ll sometimes also see a number after the note, such as G1, which indicates which octave the note is in, counting up from the left end of the keyboard. F# (F sharp) is the same note as Gb (G flat), being the black key between F and G.

    • @DennisKovacich
      @DennisKovacich Před 2 lety +1

      @@Deerhunterjs, how deep or low it is depends on which octave it’s in. The black keys are in groups of two or three. The two are C#/Db and D#/Eb, while the group of three are F#/Gb, G#/Ab, and A#/Bb. The white key to the left of the pair of black keys near the center of a piano keyboard is called Middle C or C4, so the first black key in the group of three to its right is F#4. That’s not low all. But the note Tim hit at the end of the line Sing-Off version of “Ring of Fire” was F#1, which is the lowest F# on the piano keyboard. If you don’t have access to a piano, there are apps for phones and tablets that can help you visualize some of this.

    Not only was there more stress because it was a competition, but they developed the arrangement as part of the competition, and the “studio” version was done later, rather than the other way around. So they had the opportunity to refine it for the “studio” version. Both performances were absolutely brilliant.
    Also, I remember during the Sing Off thinking, “For a show about live performance, their sound engineering isn’t as good as it should be.” It was a bit of a shame because there were some amazing performances that would have stood out even more!

    When I was a teenager, my teacher put me with the tenors (I am female, always have been). My sister was put with the Sopranos. Sister tried teaching a group of underprivileged kids Christmas Songs. She chose Winter Wonderland. They said it was too hard, so she had me (not a very good singer because I can't sustain notes) sing with her. I let her sing lead, since she was far better, and matched my notes (in my register) to hers as best I could, cutting off when I had to and letting her sustain the notes to cover for me (she was amazing at singing and came in second in our school for a musical scholarship for college). After we were done, I was so pleased. The kids, unfortunately, quit the lessons because they insisted they'd never sound "as good as" us. I cried at that and wished I had messed up. Sister was so dang frustrated because she had wanted to show them that a 'bad' singer could do very well if they tried. The kids didn't see it that way. Next to Sister, I really sucked, but I guess on my own, I was better than I thought, just no real breath control.
    On the flip side, when I joined the Navy, I auditioned for the Navy Choir. The man doing the auditions also did the auditions for Disney. He asked what "voice" I was and I told him Tenor. He said there's never been such a thing as a female Tenor. (Funny thing, my mother can hit baritone notes.) So I told him I was Alto. He had me sing, a Capello and solo, the Star Spangle Banner (the most impossible song, I insist!). After I finished, he said "I can't take you for two reasons. You are the first and only female Tenor I've ever heard, and so one: I can't place you with the ladies, it would throw them off vocally. And two: I can't place you with the men, it would throw off the visual aspect of the choir." Then he informed me he does the auditions for Disney and asked me to come back once I'd left the Navy to audition for Disney and he'd work with me (he must've seen something I never saw in myself.) I never did go back, but I do treasure that assessment of my voice. :-) Since that audition in 1989 (yes, way back then), I have met at least three other female Tenors which were told they couldn't exist until the teacher or conductor or whomever heard them sing. My teacher wasn't as 'stupid' as I thought she was in school, huh?

    I don't know how low Tim went on the live version, but I am pretty confident that it was lower than on the video version. With the headphones I use, I had no problem hearing that final low note on the video version, but was barely able to pick it up on the live version...

    Loved your reaction and insights, as always.
    Would really love to see you react to both Voctave (perhaps Mary Did You Know feat. Mark Lowry, the original composer, or their Disney Love Medley feat. Kirstin Maldonado and Jeremy Michael Lewis) and Voces8 (both Sound of Silence and Shenandoah are fab). These are both acapella groups, but are much more classical in style and sound (especially Voces8). They also have two of the most beautiful and sensitive sopranos I've ever heard, and are both wonderful rabbit holes of musical bliss to disappear down into.

    Warning have a tissue. This version of the song is a hard kick in the feels.
    This is Cash's last video. Reznor praised Cash's interpretation of the song for its "sincerity and meaning", going so far as to say "that song isn't mine anymore."

    The difference in placement/twang between Avi and Tim could be, at least partly, because Avi is from California and Tim is from Texas?

    • @gailseatonhumbert9199
      @gailseatonhumbert9199 Před 3 lety +1

      Avi can "twang" out as he has demonstrated in solo songs himself but even that doesn't really change the difference in timbre between the 2. His worst (in my opinion I dislike the style of music he is emulating here that I associate with Appalachia not sure of the correct name) is "When I Die". How the twang is used appears to be a singer's choice in any given song interpretation.

    Dear Julia, similar to Dimash having a range of over 6 octaves & possibly as much as 7 Tim has a range of 5 octaves.

    • @Rosannasfriend
      @Rosannasfriend Před 3 lety +2

      It doesn't count if you're including vocal fry and a whistle register. Those are not part of the connected range. Dimash fans don't seem to want to listen to that. As much fun as it is claiming gigantic numbers like six or seven, it's probably more of a range of four or five octaves, which is already massive and impressive! Quite extraordinary, really.

    • @shanialover
      @shanialover Před 3 lety +1

      @@Rosannasfriend So where were you trained on how to count an octave range because I have heard experts state that he has more than a 6 octave range. Or maybe you need to tell every vocal expert that you are the person they all need to learn from because you are the number 1 professional. Maybe you need to start printing Diplomas to hand out to voice professionals after you teach them everything they need to know and come up with a fee amount to charge them to learn from you!!!

    • @satomiwa
      @satomiwa Před 3 lety +1

      Yeah, speaking as a Sohyang fan (also a Dimash fan, but not quite as much), that's pretty much why Dimash has the reputation he does, they don't include vocal fry and whistle register, his connected range spans 6+ octaves, which I believe begins around C2 and ends somewhere above C8. His whistle register is a whole other thing. He's an alien. Pretty sure.

    • @shanialover
      @shanialover Před 3 lety +1
