The RP has a full frame sensor, so if you value or need a full frame sensor, and fps aren't important to you, then yes, it's the better camera. But most people I know who have bought the R7, including myself, have done so specifically because it is a 32 megapixel APS-C camera. A ton of pixels on subject gets you closer. Crop ability is what it's all about. Reach. I have full frame cameras and love them for landscapes and everyday photography, but when I'm shooting a shy songbird, or a wolf at 120 yards, I need reach. I also need fps.

Great video! Yes, some compelling reasons to buy an RP for portrait shooting and general photography with occasional video, if a person does not need it for fast action or high video specs. When we sold our house the professional realty photographer used an RP with ultra-wide lens and I managed to download the images to check them out. Some great stuff. The RP is great for portrait or static images like realty.

(Partly because I currently have a canon 2000D and looking to upgrade but also your level of energy and enthusiasm towards photography) thank you for a great comparison! This is my first time to bump into your content. Great content to be honest, comparing those two cameras. I bought RP couple months ago because I need to replace my old camera. At first, a lot of things were new to me since I'm using 450D as my hobby camera, now I'm enjoying my RP when taking portraits and also my collections. To he honest, it is a great camera, depending on how you use it. Since I'm not taking photos of wild life, I prefer this camera and enjoys it. Yeah, I agree with the words you said in the last part of the video, that we don't need to upgrade too much on the system if we don't upgrade our skillset.

Regarding the dial thing, I've seen a lot of people talking about the R7's changes, with only two wheels (top and thumb wheel). As a long-time 7DII user, this is exactly what I've been shooting with for years. No third control like more expensive cameras. The thumb wheel did move from the 7DII, but it seems to be in a better ergonomic position so you only have to move your thumb to the side, not over and down.
My principal control when I'm shooting fast in changing light conditions (I shoot concerts) is the shutter speed. I have that mapped to the thumb wheel on the 7DII, and the top dial controlling the aperture. ISO is done through the top dial with a single button-press to change it.
I can't imagine much will change with my operations with the R7..........if I ever get the one I ordered.

I hope for a RP Mk2 and so..... Canon should focus more on the hobbyists, not just the professionals.
Canon made a really good job with DSLRs in 2007 up to 2014 at least... affordable entry level, better midclass but still somehow affordable for the more "professional" user and good but super expensive gear as anywhere.
Now the entry level DSLM bodies cost already 900$+... without a single lens to use it at all. Thats poor. I remember entry level DSLRs for 300$, brand new! But somehow my paycheck didnt rise 3x as the prices?!

Thanks for the candid and detailed presentation/review. I am not a professional and I don’t shoot video, and here are my 2 cents adding to your comments:
I picked up the RP when it first came out in early 2019 and the R7 a month ago. For all intents and purposes they are the same new price when you take into considerations of the added features such as: IBIS, higher resolution, much improved auto focus, improved menu/operating system, dual cards (if you need it), bigger and commonly used battery, etc.
I absolutely agree that RP is the perfect fit for budget minded, general photography, etc. However, the R7 should be considered more suitable for photographers who do wild life photography occasionally. It’s auto focus, higher pixel, and further reach allow you to practise wild life photography without breaking your bank getting the R5 or R6. It’s particularly true if you already owned some of the older lenses such as the EF 70-300mm f4-5.6L.
By the way, I love the compact size and light weight of the RP: 17.9oz vs 22.4oz (with battery & SD card, weighted myself). The best camera is the one you can afford without going into financing!

Hi Mark interesting comparison and always a little tricky comparing FF with APSC. For a slightly different perspective I paid about US $1500 in 2005 ( $2100 in 2022 values) for the Canon 20D (still working) and US $ 1700 for the R7 last week so it’s worth just stepping back and admiring how far Canons APSC cameras have come and that they are cheaper than ever. The 20D is an 8megapixel camera with AF and a postage sized LCD thats pretty much it, not that I didn’t get some great images on it but the R7 is well, quite spectacularly better 😀 From a personal perspective, for my use case, I would be picking the R7 over the RP regardless of the price difference. Cheers from NZ 😀👍

Im looking at moving up from a Canon SL1. The Sl3 was my next choice but with the market moving to mirrorless it seem like I might be better moving to the R series. I use my SL1 casually and a majority of my photographs are taken on my phone. The Sl1 is for vacations and specific outing for taking photographs. So I think the R7 is over kill but the RP is a consideration. Video is important since I make the occasional CZcams video. I was looing at the M50 and M200. the rolling shutter issue on the R7 sounds serious and I am not sure if Clog is an important item on my list. The two available R7 Lense don't inspire me. I only have a telephoto for my Sl1 so its not like moving to a new lens system would be a huge consideration.

I really love my RP, i was coming from a 550D/600D and it was a HUGE STEP.... all my EF lenses (except a 75-300mm IS USM) perform better on mirrorless as expected.
For me the reason to go for the RP was mainly the price and that i dont use(d... fk it^^) video.
Well... things changed, i realized wildlife is more interesting after i got the RP (and RF 800 F11) and its very limiting if you want/need more than 1080p60 or 4k 25 fps or 4-5fps in burst.
None the less, i dont regret my decision for the RP - The R7 is MUCH TOO EXPENSIVE and the R10 is too limited, especially in buffer and SD card write speed. The Price of the R10 is another thing considering its by far one of the worst APS-C sensors for modern DSLMs.
The RP is ok for video (even better for vlogging than R5, R6, R7 etc), but NOT for anything beyond 60 fps. But i have to say... 1080p60 is very good and 4k in manual focus also nice, any other setting is very low bitrate and noticable worse.

@@myfavoritecrew7920 well I've managed to test the RP (lucky me the 2nd photographer at a paid gig i was in was using it with a adapted sigma 70-200 and canon 24-70 f4) a few days after commenting to Mark.
So during the gig We swap gears halfway along the shoot and we both agree and noticed the m6mkii is way better at overall focusing peformance. The RP focusing is nothing bad, its as accurate as it gets with mirrorless no front and back focusing issues unlike dslr. But laggs behind the m6mkii. We use the slow burst 3fps mode on both bodies 56mm(90mm) on the m6mkii and 90mm on his 70-200 sigma both at f2.8, same subject dancing back and fourth left and right about 25-26 continues shots about 5 times.
Reviewing back the pics,(over 120 shots) the m6mkii have 95%-90% accurate focus vs 65%-70% on the RP. The RP is good, but not on par with the m6mkii.
For iso, RP at 6400 even 12800 is cleaner. Safe to say you can get away with most of the shoots even as high as 12800. With the m6mkii, 12800 is unusable for me, some shots maybe but mostly no. And the bokeh is way apparent vs the apcs m6mkii. Gotta hand it to the fullframe sensor 😂
Dynamic range is just a tad better with the RP, its better but not enough wow factor to justify the peformance vs m6mkii.
All i can say is due to the fullframe-ness of RP, the pic it self will turn out better. But for focus speed and performance, the m6mkii owns the RP. I dont mind the slow 3fps speed as long as it can nail every shots but my test proven otherwise. So for me, RP is not a good enough upgrade. Still praying to meet up with a R user so i can test out the focusing peformance though 😬

Mark, I have one question about the RP if you'll indulge me. I know the RP lacks native image stabilisation, so it essentially relies on the IS of a Canon lens. If I use the RP with a non-IS lens (e.g. the RF 16mm f2.8or the RF 50mm f1.8) the best thing is to use a tripod for every shot. Of course this isn't always possible, so can I still take sharp, unblurred photos hand-holding the RP if I adhere to the focal length rule (e.g. set shutter speed for faster than the lens length (e.g. at least 1/150s for the 50mm) in sufficient light? I have an RP, never tried the R7. Yes it's true, the RP is absolutely terrible for capturing fast moving subjects. Even just shooting a model who was sort of slowly dancing around in a dress, it just kept whiffing the autofocus. So between the poor autofocus and the 4 frames per second, forget using it on anything faster than a slow walk. But I really like it for fashion and portrait shooting. The images are nice, and of course the colors are good. I prefer the color out of the RP more than my much more expensive Sony's.

In the end its about customer relationships. So far I’m impressed, I’m using the R7 as a backup with extra reach for my R5 for events in particular (my previous backup was the 50D ) . I don’t find it too hard to swap between cameras although the two comments I’d make is that I miss the top LCD on the R7 and the R7 shutter sounds decidedly agricultural compared to the R5 😀 Also as Mark mentions the video is amazing , was testing even the 1080 120 over the weekend, amazing on a 32” Imac monitor.

@@castielvargastv7931 Exactly why it's silly to be comparing them! If you are interested in the R7, you probably aren't interested in the RP. Same the other way around. Apples to oranges. One is a wildlife, sports, action camera, and the other a landscape, portrait, general photography camera.

i think canon just lost a chance to dump the 1.6x crop sensor. the IBIS looks great, but i still love my RP. maybe next RP (2?) will have IBIS, i will buy one

Well the R7 is really for the sports and wildlife shooter that wants the crop for that reason. It is strange, for me, handling the crop sensor R7 and it is the largest camera I own, it could easily fit a full frame sensor.

Why would they want to dump the APS C sensor? A lot of wildlife and bird shooters have been clamoring for this.

Can vouch that if the R7 was a 24mp FF I would have not even considered it. For me that 33mp crop sensor is a big plus in every way for wildlife.
