DPReview TV: Canon EOS RP Review

  • The EOS RP is Canon's second full frame mirrorless camera, built around the new RF mount, and comes with an aggressive launch price of $1300. While there are some inevitable compromises to be made at this cost, Chris and Jordan discovered that there's a lot to like about this pint-sized full-framer.

    I have to say, after so many rants and negativities around EOS RP, you guys have done a fantastic job in giving non biased review. Thumbs up. Long time Nikon shooter I feel that's what Nikon needed the most to enlarge Z mount user base, not the Noct not the 1.2S line. A simplified Z6 with same sensor, crippled video specs, less weather sealing and a bit slower frame rate at high speed continuous, hopefully same battery, 24-70s combo for under $2000 and $1400 for the body alone.

      @AbdonPhirathon Před 5 lety +1

      Frank Luo, I've been hearing a lot of rumors about a Z5, but no solid information so far. If they release it this year then Canon's going to have some competition in this new segment.

      @Ildskalli Před 5 lety +2

      With 35mm sensors costing still between $100 to $300, it's absolutely *impossible* to hit a $500 price point. Mind you, camera sensors don't go down in price like other semiconductors, because their yields are extremely dependent on size.

      Phones are going to kill the low end market. Whatever anecdotal shit the northrups say, end of the day the VAST majority of ex-compact camera users now use phones and dont give a shit about fullframe or knowing photography. With AI becoming more appearant in phone cameras software will simulate bokeh, as they are doing now. Consumers dont care once again. The high end and pro market will be where dedicated expensive cameras are going to live.
      I think the Northups VASTLY overestimate the desire for cheap cameras. They might hear it alot but then again they run a massive photography business. Ofcourse people who have interest flock to them and that makes their perspective incredibly skewed. Most people buying cheap Canon DSLR's put them on a shelf, never use them. I see soo many 2000D's with about 1000 clicks.No point to invest significantly into a system which people are not actually going to use. In comes the Canon 4000D. Their 6 year old 18mp sensor, PLASTIC lens mount, no flip screen etc. Sells like hotcakes to people who aren't going to use the thing, why on earth would Canon invest significantly in R&D for a FF system which people put on a shelf. @Ziggi Mon

    Thank you for an excellent review. I just received my RP yesterday. I tried just just about all my lenses on this camera. They all worked fine including the 2 EF-S lenses I use on my 80D. The only problem I had was with my Sigma 50mm 1.4. It showed circles in the images I took. Today I will try this lens again turning off all lens corrections and hopefully those circles disappear. I read that the R had this same problem and turning off the pherifical on third party lenses solved it. Putting it another way I will upgrade to a few of the RF lenses but I am in no hurry. I know this camera has warts but they are warts I am willing to live with. Every camera has. There is no holy grail system out there. Full frame goodness in a light weight camera with excellent ergonomics for $1299.00 that can use existing glass with great results was just the ticket for me on my fixed income. I just turned 65 years young today with my first film camera being a MInolta X7. I've been around awhile. I am not sure who the marketing of this camera is for but it certainly ticked all my boxes and I have bought it. While everyone else out there is searching for their holy grail I will be happily out working my craft. Keep on keeping on!!!!!!!

      @tamasvarga67 Před 4 lety +2

      John Blomeling Yeah, good thinking! Many people are obsessed with specs but actually, this camera is awesome. Canon’s ergonomics, touch interface is pretty much the best in my opinion and it’s more important over time than some of the missing specs, and using EF lenses natively is a killer feature. I have a 5DIII and an 80D and I’m still on the fence to get the RP or wait for the R II to come out and then get a discounted R.
      How do you like it after the firmware update?

    One of your best reviews ever! Can be you did not notice yourself, but when you do indoor footage for video we as your audiance can see how a camera is doing in low light. Most video footage you normally do is outdoors with only very short tests in low light…. But also the step by step topics in this review are just right to follow and get a well rounded impression. So thanks a lot and keep up the good work…. :-)

    I love seeing you guys work and do your stuff....balanced, honest, and pull no punches review....I own the canon ae1, for memories only. The t5i, still going strong with the wife. And finally, i own the xt2. It's so disappointing when canon constantly pulls features for purposes of market targeting for their perceived and specific customer base. Which appears to be dwindling per their own ceo's admission. However, what great hooks they have in their products. dpaf, canon color, touchy flippy screen, great menu system, awesome L glass, durable bodies ( even the plastic ones ). When you examine their marketing logic it makes perfect sense. Provide the basics, plant the hook in new fish, and, theoretically of course, you have a customer for life. It's great when it works. At the same time, as photographers improves their skill set, individuals begin to want more. And this is where canon begins to fall flat. The problem is, this is also the smallest target audience, pro-sumers, and professionals begin to dwindle in numbers. Canon caters to beginners, mid-range, and eventually the pros. Don't get me wrong, canon has great pro equipment, but it always appears as of late to be lagging behind the competition in improved features. Even their beginner products are showing this. Although I will never know the thinking of the inner sanctum of canon, it does leave us, the former canon hopeful, formulating our own conspiracy theories.
    As always, keep up the good work and keep em flying....
    Now where did i park that saucer...hmmmm.

    Long time EOS M user here. Had a combination of an M3 and M6 and was shooting with both. At some point, the M3 just died on me and at first I was looking to replace it with an M50 II, but then I saw on the vendor's website that a brand new RP including the RF 50mm 1.8 lens was only about 900$, which somewhat stunned me. Full-frame with a great prime lens for noticeably less than a grand and no need to change my battery packs? Almost sounded too good to be true, but I took a leap of faith and ordered it. Best decision ever!
    The camera and lens work really well together and even wide open, I get perfectly sharp and detailed pictures combined with a quick autofocus. The eye-tracking feature is also absolutely massive for me as a portrait photographer and although it isn't always perfectly on point, it still focuses on people much better than my M6 with a 32mm 1.4 ever did. Not to mention the superb low-light performance, especially when you switch from an APS-C to a full-frame.
    All in all, this is the best camera to buy in terms of price-to-performance ratio and if you want to transit from APS-C to full-frame over time. I am in love with mine and cannot wait to see where this full-frame journey takes me.
    Thank you for a great review.

    Hello DP Review, nice video and review. I personally own this camera and really love it. If you use it as compact full frame studio camera, it's amazing. Initially I was a little concerned about battery life, but after a few weeks I've reached 445 shots with one charge. Yes, it's not that impressive for any standard DSLR, but for a mirror less camera probably is.

    Good review and helpful. I know you have good professional integrity and this is a good example of doing a good review which is to sit with the potential buyer of the product and quickly take them through all the major points they would come up against if they could afford to do the same. As you know your genre of professional reviewers is littered with examples of compromised individuals who go easy on these cameras because they are being wined and dined by canon Sony Nikon at some beautiful location and its subtle but the influence of such a relationship is one i hold very near the surface when watching you two review things and this is a good example of holding a new product to task and i appreciate it. I want sony to give me new cameras to play with every time they release something, but since they dont and they give them to you all i am grateful when the videos are not just about how cool it is to get free stuff and look at this cool feature. This one was about how does this stack up in relation to the other options at that price point overall for people like myself where it is a huge deal to commit one way or the other because money is tight so to buy one thing is to lose access to another, that’s opportunity cost and where you two are one of the better reviewers especially Jordan has the curmudgeon thing down so i always know he will speak truth to power as it were. So really this is me seeing what i think is one of your better videos critically and encourage you to take that moment before each review as a team and just remember how subtle is the creep of sunny tropical locations (or even the subtle creep of free gear in the frozen tundras of canada or wherever you all are from - i dont know i am from the United States so the only way we learn geography is if we happen to invade a country) and you certainly gain my loyalty when you are willing to give an in-depth and balanced view as well as being able to step back and compare it to the Panasonic etc. . Keep up the great work.

I have too much invested in Canon lens (and full frames) to make a switch to Sony or Nikon at this time.

  • @Kamukix

    Quick comment on the "dynamic range issue" with the Canon RP, while the camera definitely does NOT have the ability to do the awesome ISO invariant kinda tweaking of some of my other bodies (Nikon D810, Fujifilm X-T3, etc, etc, etc)...it can still capture a very solid amount of dynamic range in a single image and it's not hurting me I just have to (as usual) know what I'm doing and prioritize what's most important in the photo like I would for the others so I'm not always shooting to push shadows by 3-5 stops.
    Also if you're shooting landscape work then it's not a problem at all to just shoot bracketed exposures which the RP does just fine haha. (also it has Focus bracketing which is pretty cool though I haven't spent real time with it just yet)
    The current sale price had me totally rethink whether or not I'd ever try one out, and I just received it this past weekend for $999 with the kit lens (that I'll sell immediately off as soon as I know the camera won't have a problems in the 30 day return window) even though I'll not use that lens for more than making sure the camera works properly then I put it back in the box as I don't like it much. Selling that lens off makes the already body only deal of $899 even more insane at about $780...it's a crazy deal.
    I took it out into the field for the first time this weekend to run it through it's paces, and after setting the camera up for portrait work the night before...I almost completely forgot that it was a new camera I was using at all. The results were excellent, and the camera performed very very well the entire day of shooting. I shot roughly 712 photos (incl. bursts) and went through 1.5 batteries though I purchased and charge enough to have 4 batteries if needed.
    Other than wishing I had a better eyecup on this thing (looking for a replacement), I gotta say that I'm very very happy with it's performance. I used the Canon 100mm f/2, Tamron 45mm f/1.8, Canon RF 35mm, and the Canon 24-105mm STM this weekend all without problems. It was sooooooo nice being to use the 100mm f/2 without a thought to the autofocus because the EyeAF worked amazingly(!) well enough that I didn't have to move the focus point ONCE during the entire day. My other cameras are a lot faster (well the Fuji bodies and older Nikon bodies anyway...not the D810 by that much) and yes the RAW files are better to dramatically underexpose with, but this little RP is earning it's keep it seems. I think it just might be time to decide to just keep the thing and sell that kit lens early so I can't back out haha.
    I expected a train wreck of a camera and to send it back within 2 or 3 days, but that was not what happened at all.

I was debating between canon and Fuji and once I saw the lens lineup and much better hybrid shooting ecosystem, Fuji was a no brainer. Entry level to full frame shouldn’t cost $1300+$700 lens. Finally a review of this camera in actual low indoor light situations. I have watched so many reviews looking for low light mentions, and they're all done outside. I'll be shooting inside mostly, at night, in places similar to what you shot the video in, except not even that much light. More like a civic center with vast ceilings and walls to far away to bounce light off of. Also thank you so much for demonstrating the noise in the shadows. I'm using a 7D MKII with the kit 18-135 lens, and the shadow noise is awful. I was hoping by getting this RP body + the 24-105mm lens kit that it would be a big step up (going from crop sensor to full frame and much much better glass). Any thoughts on that as an actual good upgrade? The fps doesn't make much difference to me except for battery life. I had considered the 6D MKII as well, but thought that mirrorless is the future and wanted to stay on track at least, plus I'm hearing rumblings that Canon may be done with 6D line at the Mk II. I'm going to look and see if you have a review on the 6D MKII as well.

If there is one thing i learned from selling cameras for 2 and half years now is that beginners and amateurs don't want to spend their money on lenses, even if you tell them that lenses are doing most of the work...

    Recently I went to a pro-camera store. I came for different gear but we ended up talking and trying out the EOS R(not the RP). What came out for me as a surprise is that instead of to trying to keep enough highlight details so you can push up the shadows as most normally do, you best metering on the shadows and take DOWN the Highlights! The other way around! Don't know how and what but it worked! You can take down the highlights of the EOS-R by a large amount! At the store they believe Canon should had that in their marketing! So most reviewers are talking about too much shadow noise in their test now. So instead of normal to under exposure a bit the EOS-R seems to do better with slightly overexposure it seems. Worth to try out!

I have a Sony A6500 and this Canon RP blows it out of the water in terms OTB image qaulity, ergonomics, menu system, back screen, Canon remote softrware. For the average Joe who wants to shoot amazing stills and protraits, family events or company events at a cheap price with largest lens selection on the market this camera is a win... However, my a6500 shoots better 4k video and videos but I have $65 4k cam from Amazon that I hardly use that shoots amazing 4k n 1080p video... Alot ppl are judging or mistaking the target market. Yea my A6500 is more powerful or A7iii is more powerful and older models but they price point with a couple decent primes starts around anywhere from 2,500-4k while image is NOT better than this Canon. The RP with the free grip and adapter is 1300 and you can get a 50mm 1.8 prime lens to use with the adapter for $125 that shoots amazing stills and protraits!!!

    That was another good and fair review from you guys. There's only one slight problem: you actually made the camera look better than what you described it as being. Jordan made it look good for video, even in 4K and Chris made it look like a solid low-light camera. It performed very well in this video. Did Jordan manually focus in the 4K part?
    One other minor thing, I think it's meaningless even mentioning CIPA battery ratings. They are so far off the mark for virtually every camera that it's a joke. I bought an M50 specifically for street photography and it's rated at 235 shots per charge. I consistently get around 1600+shots and 1800+ if doing a lot of bursts. The lowest I ever got was still over 1,000 shots, so who knows where 235 is coming from.

    I have a Fuji X-T20, with the 18-55 kit. I borrowed my friend’s RP, with 24-70 2.8 and 85 1.8 for the week. And so far, I have to say the RP isn’t a huge step up from the Fuji. I agree with Chris’ review, I really like for example, the touch screen interface. It is very logically laid out, and it gives you information on each function. But I was definitely expecting a bit more on its image quality. In terms of sharpness, it is pretty much the same as the Fuji. In terms of noise performance, it is also pretty similar to the Fuji, up to ISO 6400. If I were considering one of these, I’d wait for the R6, and see how much more it is. If it is too much, then get the RP at a even (possibly) cheaper price.

    • @thenexthobby
      @thenexthobby Před 4 lety

      An interesting question. Chris rightly said the RP is better at portraiture than it is for action (and the 6D MkII's better fps should easily win it for sports) but what he never talked about here is how much more effective the RP's AF points spread further out should be better for portraiture, especially with the touch-to-drag ability to select AF points.
      Where I worry (and I don't know how much of a worry it really is) about the RP is in dynamic range. Presumably the good low light performance negates much of the concern, as I think it would with 6D and 6D MkII ?
      I'd like to hear your thoughts on the 6D. It's on my short list actually.

    • @cooloox
      @cooloox Před 5 lety +6

      Actually, it wasn't much better at all. The EOS RP had larger grain, the D750 had more grain. So do you prefer tightly packed small grain or more spaced out larger grain? I'd say the D750 had a slight edge.

    • @TL-xw6fh
      @TL-xw6fh Před 5 lety +4

      The reason may be because the D750 sensor is ISO invariant, whereas the Canon sensors are not ISO invariant, hence their very poor low light performance.

      @cooloox Před 5 lety +2

      @@shrubmonkey OK, you keep telling yourself that. I was watching on a 50" screen and the difference was not massive. Also, regardless of when the D750 was released, it's still the "current" model in that price range.

    • @wasabibinladeen62
      @wasabibinladeen62 Před 5 lety +7

      @@cooloox D750 is $1000 cheaper than Canon EOS R. Sony A7III is $250 cheaper. The ISO performance is bad on both R and RP. You need to keep in mind that when Sony released their entry level A7III, they didn't cripple its iso performance, FPS, autofocus (actually improved), video, battery, build quality, etc. compared to A7RIII despite costing over $1000 less. They did lower the EVF and LCD screen resolution but it was not a big deal for most people and helped Sony to overtake Full frame market over Nikon and Canon. On the flipside, We got Canon releasing pretty mediocre camera and crippling it down further back to five years ago to protect its "flagship" lineup. Dynamic range performance is pretty horrible for the price range as well even compared to their own APS-C models.
      Canon thinks their fans are just gonna keep buying into their system as long as they put their Canon logo on it. Also going for RP might just be one of the worst choices for the mirrorlesss market since there are like two entry-level RF mount lenses available. Honestly, Fuji's XT-3 will get you significantly better results unless you are shooting in extreme low light.

    I fit the picture as target customer for the RP: Amateur, had a 6D before and some 2.8 EF zoom lenses from Tamron. Why I switched? Because the RP is way easier to operate than any other full frame camera I know. I finally kicked the automatic modes and shoot in manual only. The two dials make it possible to change aperture and exposure while looking through the EVF. The touchscreen is flipped out and with my left thumb I move the focus points around at the same time. THAT's the real advantage of the RP compared to other cameras (and the 6D). On a down side: The missing weather sealing might be an issue, since I travel a lot. That's going to be a risk. The dynamic range didn't prove to be a major issue so far, bringing out shadows in raw files turned out more than decent and not worse, than with the 6D. One warning though: If you're using 3rd party EF lenses with the adapter, test the compatibility first. I had an older Tamron 70-200 F2.8 where the autofocus didn't work. With newer glass, no issue though.
