I like that you are methodical in your approach to all this. I am a retired tech now, but I have worked on a lot of corvettes, most 5th gen units. The engines of the c4 are my least favorite to work on personally, having to remove the intake to get to other things in example. The engine running rough can be a fuel issue. There may be sediment in the system that has come loose and ruined the new fuel filter or even clogged one or more of the injectors. An easy start is to check pressure at the rail then moving onward.
For the c5, my shop had a special license to do salvage rebuilds on them, and I have rebuilt at least 2dozen of them. I am intimately familiar with their electrical systems in particular. I imagine from the c4, you have learned that starting with the charging system is a time saving bit of wisdom. Bench testing the alternator and battery then looking at the primary cables at each end is always wise with a car that has been stored for an extended period first. Pulling the spark plugs and using the boriscope to see the condition of the cylinder walls is wise to avoid buying parts for what may be a derelict engine. I would also check for signs of water damage in case the car has been under water, which will necessitate a completely different approach to any restoration attempt. In regards to the no connection to ecu errors, it’s always possible that the ecu is faulty, or that a previous owner thought it was but replaced with one that was not programmed for that VIN. There are many multipoint connectors in the electrical system with many small pin connections. Those can look good at first glance, but the internal snaps that hold them in place can be broken. If in doubt, remove the back end plastic keeper then the rubber buffer that keeps it dry should pull out, then carefully grab a single wire and see if it pulls out of the back of the connector easily. Do that with every wire in the connector obviously then you can verify the truly good. There is a sizable bulkhead box on the right side of the floorboard inside the car, about where the toes of a passenger is. There are hundreds of connections there. On a 98 c5 I worked on, the car had an impact on the right side front. We did the body work and replaced the snapped control arm etc, but it had many electrical issues. The firewall of the car appeared unscathed but the wires leading to that bulked are very short with zero slack. The impact pulled the wires rather hard and it turned out that the junction box I mentioned was cracked and many of the small wires were pulled out. The small metal pins that clip into the various connections, there MANY kinds of them in each c5, even though they all look the same. If you have to get some, it is highly advisable to buy a large quantity of each size and type, or you may end up wasting a lot of time with electrical repairs. The most important wires in the harness are violet and violet with white stripe for the keyed and unkeyed positive connections. GM calls it violet but it is a distinctly periwinkle color btw.
Thank you for inviting us on this journey with you both!
Agreed, post above and other psters have taken my educated hunches. Good to see the Zr1 community getting in it, they are small tight group once you get into it.
What a fantastic reply. 👏
Ouch we hope that it hasn't ruined the wiring loom on the C5 :O Sounds rather scary that. The front wing is flapping in the wind so we imagine that its got wet in there and caused problems with the ECU. At a guess at least, but we are parking that whilst we get the C4 on the road!
Lads you are doing a great job, don’t give up, we petrol heads are proud of you guys.
Thankyou Shane :) really appreciate it! Got to keep classics alive!
@@Auto_Funk I love your taste in T-Shirts!
Thanks @brusselssprouts560! Which one is your fav?
⏩️⏩️⏩️Using my ladies phone but my name is Curtis and own a 91 ZR-1 ......She's been in the shop for paint for way to long but living vicariously through your build .....my car was over 120k miles when i bought her so did lots of restorations thanks to Jerry's Gaskets after purchase and more to do after paint ....but age and mileage isn't something that most owners face but I have....the O2 sensors will help but one problem I had that I think your fighting now is the dried out wiring going to your tps.... what I discovered after being warm during cornering would toss up codes disengage full power mode then sometimes would die and not restart .... seems like the factory shape of the wires going to tps and heat dried out the wires then during excessive g's the plug flexes around spreading out the contacts giving intermediate function. I found this one night in the dark after it acted up and I had no tools with me ...limped her home de-pinned the plug, cleaned each pin with contact cleaner and scratched up the female connectors and tightened up the gaps and problem solved.
Mine still has an intermittent problem during hard pulls 3rd 4th and 5th in beast mode where it tosses a code and then disengagement of full power happens. If I can't get it fixed after getting back from paint the brick of an ecu will be changed for a holley ecu ...
One other problem I had was the full power vac system the solenoid beside the Ford/ferrari vacuum canister yes has a Ford part number would leak so I replaced it with a factory unit and same problem so replaced with a boost solenoid from a 300zx which doesn't have a bleed problem and way more robust but did have to place an inline bleed after the full power mode map sensor over next to the brake booster .
Now use some silicone on your vacuum pump because the new one will fail soon and please change out 2 things for me first is that Chinese pulley on the alternator. Hopefully you have a ZR-1 unit they pump out more amps than normal Chevy units but the rpms of this motor you will over spin the alternator and could result in a fiery death . Next before driving any distance change out the radiator . I blew the tank off mine at around 7k rpm one night .... yeah my girl gets used . Radiators are good but 35 year old plastic is not ... I replaced mine with a deWitts and used the factory fans with extra spacers and sealed up the sides also run two bottles of water wetter.....yes Hella expensive but 100plus days in the south and car never goes over 180 ... ill check back later but respond to this and I'll get you my phone number ...best of luck curtis
Also walbro 255's will work in tank and not over run system and extra ground wires can't hurt these lt5's love electricity....⏮️⏮️
Thankyou really useful advice! We have kept the original alternator so will look at changing it back to the larger pulley! This car is a little way away from 7000rpm we feel but the radiator is something we will keep a close eye on and change in the future no doubt!
No garage and restoring a car that requires parts from across an ocean? That's some next level dedication but the end product will be well worth it.
Oddly enough... We've found ordering parts from America easier than ordering parts for cars in the UK, parts usually come in a few days! We've waited weeks for Jaguar bits before! Beauty of the Corvettes for us is, they're a common car (in America) so parts availability is generally very good... but in the UK they're seen as a bit of a rare exotic that is "scary" to own...
However I would say if you're in the UK don't be afraid to own one. :)!! We see them as an interesting alternative to a Porsche 996 that is cheaper to run car, with the sound track of a TVR, yet its safer and more reliable... Its like the best bits of a Porsche and a TVR in one package!
@@Auto_Funk I'm in the US and have never been a Vette guy. I was always more in to the classic Mopar and Plymouths then got in to Japanese sports cars. Im 53 and still drive an STI that keeps me young at heart. As for ordering parts it drives me crazy to have to stop work, drive down to the auto parts store so couldn't imagine having to stop for a few days waiting on a part to come in. Good luck on the Vette and cant wait to see the finished result.
These videos remind me working on my first car when 16, on the street in Aberdeen. Mk3 Cortina, superlegera, because it was 50 % fibreglass and rust.
XD! I've worked on a few cars that had some significant weight reduction for sure! Nice car them Cortinas!
Well done guys, yes it is a lot of work fixing and filming these videos, editing them and getting them out on schedule. Continued success with your channel.👍
Been watching this series closely. I have no experience with a restoration like this but its super interesting and has sparked a real interest in american cars for me
Thanks so much for the comment Gaz! You ought to treat yourself to a nice slice of American (V8) pie! 🥧
@Auto_Funk it's on the cards. I love V8's and now starting to like the 80's/90's American cars so it's a perfect match. Got to so research first so I know what I am getting myself into
Really enjoying the videos. I recommend Doug Rippie coilovers for your zr1. They are a game changer.
Oh nice!! We will definitely check them out, thanks for the recommendation 🙏🙏
Progressing nicely guys! You're not wrong about how much longer it takes when you're filming the work! Keep up the good work! That suspension would look even more amazing with a wee bit of aluminium brightener on it - especially up front. 👌
Thanks @2HopesGarage - It adds hours on end to the work, and we only get one evening a week to do as much as we can sadly! I might put a bit of brightener on the aluminium one lunch this week if I get time :) I've had a look at your channel and subscribed - Great to see a Camaro convertible up in Scotland!
@@Auto_Funk You guys are legends! Two subscribers from one channel! Massively appreciated!👍I’m hoping to replace the Camaro with a ZR1 next year if the pennies permit. The Camaro is nice if not the fastest - great on the scenic roads up here on a sunny day. All the best!
Great video guys your good a fine job with them. Good progress with zr1
Leave the new one as a rat look, put your cash into suspension & power
Thanks Mick! We agree, we want the C5 to be fighting fit mechanically... The cosmetics don't really matter (definitely not at this stage anyway!)
Don't do black on that other car! Why waste the money on a color change when it will be a track car. Spend it on SUSPENSION, brakes, oil cooling and tires...it's a track car...right? Then, when you are ready, maybe upgrade the power a bit. Painting it is a waste of money, JMO of course. Love the honest content you guys are doing, and doing it in the front yard on gravel gives you extra cred. lol, that is passion and youth for sure. Carry on lads!
100% . But. If you really dont like the colour. Sand down the rough bits and just wrap it. Good channel content also.
Not sure about youth ! haha!
Yeah you're right! Doesn't matter really if its a fast road track car! How it drives is key!
Lmao.. Yr being Waaaaaaay too Generous fella ! 😂😂😂😂 this channel sucks !
It's well on the way now. Keep up the good work.
Thanks - We can't wait to get the new brake hardware fitted!
Brilliant guys love it love your attention to detail with this build. Can’t believe how well inner arches came up loving this build guys well done. Coming along nicely now 👍🏽
Basically brand new :D! Besides the bushes of course... we can't believe how well it is cleaning up to be fair :) ! Thankyou for the support Jeff!
@@Auto_Funk your welcome mate bushes and drop links probably going to be perished after all those years sitting about in all weathers but to be fair it’s weathered well ain’t it 👍🏽
If it has a bad sensor it should throw a code , need to hook up and see what it says , before throwing parts at it
It has a cam sensor code on the dash, though I don't think we showed it!
@tyke you're right - And it is, a code 31. We've done lots of work off camera and we are at the stage where it has to be either cam sensor or ECM. We are throwing lots of parts at it and that isn't to try and cure faults without proper diagnosis, the plan was always to replace every single sensor anyway just because they've been sat for 18 years!
You guy's do amazing job with which you have. Most of the people who do the same things you do. Have a large garage and all the fancy tools. Tell you one thing you must have very sore knees with all the kneeling you do on the gravel. But hay little by little things will get a lot better for you both. Just keep doing what your doing. 😊
Thanks John for the kin words of encouragement! The gravel is a massive pain (in the knees!)! Once the car drives and stops we can move it to somewhere more convenient to work on!
Put the brakes back on, fit new tyres and go for a good hard drive......it'll probably start running better. I still don't understand how the previous owner left a car like this to rot in a paddock under damp UK weather. Love the content gentlemen, I hope she runs well for you.
I guess time gets away from a fella. Thankfully it was sat on dry ground that seemed to drain well and it has been well shielded from the sun by the house. Corvettes C4 onwards are really quite rust resistant. Most stuff is either fibreglass or alloy... No doubt if it was a fully steel car it would be gone! Thankyou for your support :) !
You all are doing a great job! So much rust and corrosion! And working in a driveway, best wishes for continued success!
Thankfully nothing too rusty :)! Cobwebs seem to be the biggest hurdle! Thanks for the support! Nice yellow Vette!
@@Auto_Funk know that I feel for you all, I bought my 95 2 years ago and I have rebuilt the engine, replaced the optispark twice, the transmission, all the suspension bushings, tires, side windows, fixed the antenna, re did the seats, put a new stereo. I’ve posted several videos of my corvette journey!
Really appreciate the video quality guys.
Thankyou :) we're trying to use better equipment :) !
Great show watching from Melbourne Australia.
Awesome :) thankyou for the support from Australia!
Coming along nicely guys, looking forward to your next video. All the very best. Tim
Thankyou Tim :) Really appreciate the support!
It needs a run. Get the running gear sorted and drive it. Obviously ALL FLUIDS need changing. So good to see all the ZR1 enthusiasts are tuning in to give you advice.
I'm my humble opinion keep it stock, original paint colour if you need to repaint it. It's very special £$£$
We want to keep the ZR-1 totally stock. Even including the power key.
Indeed gearbox and diff oil will also be replaced (along with engine oil again once its running properly, to ensure its well flushed!)
@Auto_Funk Hopefully the channel takes off enough to warrant you getting a workshop and ramp. A bit of sponsorship would help.
Really enjoying your content. Take your time no rush. What a machine, can't wait for the day she is in full chat howling around the Nurburg.....Now that would be an episode!
just an idea if you can get access to a lift and a high temp pressure washer you might be able to blast alot of the rust off of the frame and other metal componets of that car. i have done that on a couple of my cars
We'd love to do that - We're going to get it ice blasted we think (once it is running and road legal)
Keep it up fellas. Great content.
Thankyou Noel, really appreciate it :) !
The nice thing about aluminium parts is how easily they clean up and don't need paint to look tidy.
Definitely - They come up incredibly well, it's actually quite a satisfying job cleaning them up :)
What we used to say about making sure we are having plenty of spare anything to make sure you don't say run out of cable or pipe, we would say it's better to be looking at it then for it.
Haha, love the Big Bam Boom, Hall and Oates T shirt. Love that album!!
Great band :) ! That's for sure!
I envy you guys....working to bring the old ZR1 back to it's former Glory....It will be a rewarding car to drive. One thing that stands out on your export car is the rear lights. The Black Paint pulls it off so well with the amber turn signals. Not sure other colors could. Looks so cool. Really enjoy your videos and Great job to you both! Thanks for Sharing, I can vicariously work on what is to me the quintessential Chevrolet Corvette!
Thanks so much!! It does look pretty cool with the orange lenses I do agree!!
🍎 🍊 CORVETTE 🍊🍎
What do you reckon??
@@Auto_Funk I reckon it makes sense to compare apples to oranges in this case...LOL
Haha!😅
Just watching now, oh! she is being a minx, making you work for it :) the *red* C5, yeah wonky panel fitting, defo needs a respray, to something interesting, like a lime green or vivid orange but thats just me. Probably back to silver.
Ha! Definitely! We're going to win this wrestling match though :) The C5 is begging to be painted a wild colour.... We shall see!
some rough prices of items / refurbs etc would be great
I think we may spend some time in the pub... doing a costings list!

Top job lads
Thanks Chris!
Great job guys you're doing very well always watch your videos
Thankyou for the support Johnny :) !
Great work, love the content. I owned a C3 corvette in black. Always love Corvettes and the ZR1 is a very special car. Keep up the good work.
Sounds nice!! I really like C3’s, I’d love to own one at some point - Super iconic for sure, more so than C4/C5 in my opinion
I'm loving this series of videos about the ZR-1. Just a thought - how about painting the brake calipers? I understand if you don't want to, but I think it might just elevate the car that little bit more.
It’s tempting but I quite like the bare finish! We might get the old ones painted a funky colour when we send them to be rebuilt !
Thoroughly enjoying the updates . Amazing what a deep clean can achieve . Looking forward to seeing it with tyres and wheels .
Thankyou for the support Dave :) !
Thanks Dave - It is slowly (very slowly) waking up! Thanks for watching! :)
Good luck lads. Really enjoying your videos. Keep them coming cheers Paul starting to really like Corvettes.
Don't be afraid to get one, they are a lot easier to own and run than you might think. :) Cheers Paul!
Huge progress boys! Mental how much a wee clean can help
Looking fresher every week :)!
Why not put those black wheels (from your new project car) onto the black ZR-1, just to see what a 'Trans-Am Knight-Rider' style full-black-look might create? Gotta be worth the experiment, surely!
When they’re both together we might do that for a laugh!
hey guys, another great video, you need to get a cheap scope to test that cam sensor
Boom! Pop pop pop!
Ha!! Standard JDT !
Hi Boys!!! I’m loving the videos on the Corvette. I don’t know if your Corvette came with the OPTISPARK system, but if it did, it might be a good idea to check that. Cheers!! Keep up the great work!!
We believe the LT5 didn't use the optispark system. :) ! Coils have been swapped though and using a timing light all spark plug leads seem to be firing off!
Keep moving forward!
Idea - instead of doing a “Super-chat” that CZcams steals 33% of, can you possibly get with Rock Auto and get them to set-up a process where we can buy you a gift card or credit on your account?
I can’t contribute a lot but I would like to contribute something that goes 100% to you.
What does everyone think?
That's a really nice idea! We will look into that. We sure have spent a few cents at RockAuto! We're doing a run down of what we've spent so far this week (hopefully down the pub! :D) We don't think its too bad, considering the state it was in! Thankyou for the support Mike! Nice Porsche too!
Colour !!
Great videos, how about using the cam sensor off the red one as a test?
Great question Tim but unfortunately they're not compatible! :(
You’re doing great lads! Keep going!
Thank you! Will do! 💪
Ice blasting would clean those wheelwells up pretty good
For sure! Ice blasting is 100% on the cards, once we can drive it somewhere to have it done :) At least for now they are improved!
Come on lads, if it's going to be a non standard car with track day use, be able to see it coming. Think bold colours. Personally, I'd go yellow.
_A quick look into the abyss_ ~ and the abyss took a long look into you!
It always does :D!
@@Auto_Funk Hate it when that happens !
You need either the 5 spoke forged zR1 wheels or the black ones from the grand sport!
Neither that easy to find in the UK :)! Personally we really like the turbine wheels! So 80s!
Oh and under those wheel arches ? Reminded me of my student flat days 😁, by God we were poor
Reminds me of my gutters! :)
@@Auto_Funk Oh damn mine too 😁
I am enjoying your build. If you need to borrow parts off my non running one I would be happy to help you out. I won't need them until I start work on it again.
That's awesome :) one thing we really need to eliminate is the Cam sensor. There's a fault code for that and the engine has run on and off well... So we know the engine in theory "can" run properly. So we recon it started off okay and has started to break down and cause misfires. Thankyou for the support and feel free to message us on Instagram!
👌👌
You should install the plate that guy sent you, it’s to bypass something with the fuel, I fully didn’t catch what it was and I’m not gonna rewatch the vid… but it might fix the misfire… MAYBE, probably not, and he had your guys pic on his wall, that’s awesome.
Indeed, we can't believe the kindness of strangers. The Corvette community is incredible! :)!
Yellow color will work
For the C5? I reckon it would actually!
Idea for the C5; the limit to what is legal road use, so it's more fun on the track. Edit: not sure about black paint, it shows up EVERY problem with the body-work.
I know what you mean, it would be a nice approach- I would like it to retain some comfort levels if poss though for longer journeys rather than be borderline unusable on the UK roads! We do need to give some thought to colour I agree!
Have you tried to contact Jared Pink of the Questionable Garage on CZcams? He is extremely knowledgeable and expert engine builder, but also he has a huge number of good contacts such as Freddie Tavarish, Travis Bell, Tyler Hoover and many many other garages
@adam you know what we’ve thought about it but not really sure what to ask or what the motivation would be! Any ideas? Remember when he had the Esprit turbo with Freddie? I thought about contacting him about that because I did restore an Esprit in 2018 myself… Never got around to it though !
@@Auto_Funk it's a good way to get hold of contacts for spares that are impossible to obtain here in the UK, Jared may even know of garages that deal with Corvettes and potentially after market parts. The Car Wizard has had Corvettes in his garage too. You're not asking for free parts, you're looking for source to obtain OEM/after market parts to complete the project. Car guys are always willing to help others. If he doesn't know, at least you tried, but I think his knowledge and contacts would be very helpful to you. Jared has a favourite charity, the Great Pyrenees. If he's able to, chuck a few bucks to his favourite charity
Paint the new one pink and blue like your AF logo 🙂🙂🙂 Hmm maybe not, or maybe a wrap using elements of the houndstooth pattern in silver/black...
Andy I hadn't thought of that! Pink and blue might be a tad extreme but I love the idea of incorporating the houndstooth elements, I really like the houndstooth aesthetic and it would be cool to do something with, if it could be done tastefully! (which I doubt, ha!)
@@Auto_Funk maybe the houndstooth could be a graduated matt/satin lacquer over gloss black, running along the bottom half of the car, just one corner or maybe just the front or rear. Would be good to continue the theme into the interior on the seats or maybe the carpets.
I get how much of a pain in the ass it is to work with cameras and do work at the same time. I know you guys are new, but it seems like you’ve been doing it for a while. Great job.!
Thankyou for the support :)!! Yes it is true, it makes things take way longer! Worth it to document it though :) and it is fun!
Great channel ,your approach to problem solving is the right way to go,only gripe stop ruining fred perry tops working on cars ha ha

Hmmm 🤔 Chris ? Receive 😁, Better too much than not enough 😁, your very naughty boys 😂😂👌🏻
The world of cars is full of double entendres lol!
@@Auto_Funk it is but I am just worried that Chris seems to know them all 😂
😅😅😅 Chris is full of dad jokes and double entendres. Llew.
A plugged exhaust will give you a crappy running motor also.
That's true, we've had the borescope up the tailpipes and the exhausts seem clear so I don't think it's that. It could be that the cats have disintegrated of course but that's doubtful
Will you remove the foam in the hood? Never seen that before
We don’t think it’s factory and will most likely remove it we reckon!
I believe you need a GM TECH1 obd reader to access the fault codes on the lt5 engine . I don't think the paperclip obd trick works like on the regular c4 v8's fault code that let's you read them on the dash . I may be wrong , there are video's on CZcams showing how it's done . Best of luck
It does work, but it is limited to what it shows compared to a proper tool for sure!
Thanks Rusty! We used the paperclip trick and have a code 31 which is pointing towards the cam sensor. Hopefully that will cure our fault :)
@@Auto_Funk no problems glad it was of some help👍 . Looking forward to it running properly when you have all the parts .
clean the surface where the cam sensor reads from
Good shout that - We will give it a try :) It could be a mm extra gap is enough to affect the hysteresis
Other than replacing other sensors, what has you fixated on the cam sensor? If the cam sensor works like a crank sensor, the car probably won't run at all. Have you tested it, and the other sensors that were replaced? Its pretty unlikely that all the engine sensors failed at the same time. Don't parts cannon it, diagnose.
Probably didn't explain it in the video, but it is throwing a cam sensor code. Plus according to our googling failing cam sensor will show these kind of symptoms. We will do an update on what we have spent so far and to be fair, its generally a lot of serviceable items you'd expect to have changed on a 30+ year old car sometimes more than once... so not quite thrown the old cannon at it yet :)! Thanks for the support!
@@Auto_Funk gotcha, did you do the old wipe off the magnetic pick up trick? I know I've had more than one crank sensor come back to life at least momentarily like that, they can collect filings pretty easily.
Great stuff, guys. I'm no expert, but I read in a classic car magazine that copper brake lines are too soft.
copper-nickel. there's a difference.
@@332ARA isn't that cunifer?
Thanks! The copper we have used is brake line material apparently - we’ve also got some kunifer which I think is copper-nickel
Both are rated to extreme pressure (1000s of PSI) so I think either would be okay however you’ve got me thinking so we will do some reading up and may replace for kunifer off cam… 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
@@Auto_Funk find an example of an OEM application copper pipes on a car. I believe CuNI is used but never copper. I wouldn't chance it. Also at minimum the perception of copper hard lines is not favored in the case you pass this car along. My 2 cents (pence)
@@fhwolthuis yep. Made for high pressure yet easier to form
I got frustrated with my "Turbine" wheels because you couldn't see the brakes or how wide the wheels are and swapped them out for some 94/95 five spoke wheels. As you can see you have 4 different wheels, originally they came fitted with Goodyear GSCs that were also asymmetric so you had to buy 4 different tyres as well. What a spot of luck having a viewer reach out and send you a chip, you will notice the difference.
The chip is an awesome thing to have :)!!! Should release a few more ponies, can't believe the kindness of people in the car community!
We personally really love the wheels but you're right they are subtle and hide the true size of the wheel until you get low and see the width of them tyres and you know something serious is going on. Any bigger they'd meet in the middle!
Thanks for the info James - I know what you mean about the turbine style wheels hiding the brakes however I do think they are a very sexy wheel!! It would be nice to have an alternative set ut finding some in the UK is nigh on impossible we think. We're super lucky that Gordon gifted us the chip and can't wait to get it fitted (once she's up and running of course!)
Copper work hardens and is subject to corrosion. KUNIFER is definitely the best choice. Copper is easier to work with especially with the tool you are using. And if we are being honest, will do the job for a few years. But if you were looking for something that would outlast the other jobs you were doing, KUNIFER would be the choice.
Really enjoying your content - I’m going through a few projects at the moment from an XJS V12 sitting for 36 years to a couple of Jensen Interceptors and a few more. Great cadence - you are smashing through this project!
the copper seems too soft , prone to damage.
An interceptor is a brave choice! That's good information to know, we have only done the rears so hopefully will be okay on the rears for now, but will consider the fronts in steel or kunifer, but may need a better tool or two!
Get the mechanicals sorted so it’s fast, handles well and reliable, rat the exterior… find an old US race series colour scheme and make it look like it’s done a 24h race
I'd quite like the idea of making a C5R replica someday!
Cool watch , like yellow dial , looks very smart , is Casio ?
Thanks ! Yes it's a £50 Casio watch, I think it's really smart for the money :) www.casio.co.uk/mtp-b145d-9avef
Check for bad grounds and moisture/ corrosion in the ecu and other modules. Wiring has not looked great so far…
We've done a lot of that stuff off camera because it's quite boring. You'd be surprised, apart from the odd iffy ground and the rodent damage to that one cable it's actually held up well.
What makes me chuckle everytime is the statement, "if you want to see more content like this then hit that subscribe button"
So if I dont hit it I will be excluded from the next video? I hit it anyway but just a thought LOL as everyone sayt he same thing!!
It’s pretty dumb I agree but it helps the algorithm so more people get to see it!
Yes I know, I wasn`t having a dig in any way. JUst find it quite ironic. Anyway this series is of particualr interest to me as I have a C8 and love looking at the previous stuff 😍
zr1 restore it properly ! the red corvette c5 ? needs to be restored as well how do these cars end up like this especially the zr1 ???
It does make you wonder!! All I know is that we must be complete lunatics for taking them on 😅😅
I’m disappointed that Chris had no Derekisms on this video lol😂
We will have to make sure he gets his act together for the next episode!
Can you borrow the cam sensor from either your working red one or the other one you bought recently? Or are they different engines ?
Very different engines, very few shared parts between the C4 and the C5. (If anything actually!) C5 was a ground up design. We believe the cam sensor is actually ZR-1 specific, probably due to it being a quad cam design rather than cam in block.
That's a shame, but well explained
Re: the red C5, something about the front fenders seems off, either badly fitted, or some sort of weird wide body pieces (I have a '99).
We agree, part of it is the bottom of the fender on the passenger side isn't actually attached. Previous owner had a little bit of contact with a tractor if I recall (very minor contact). Which was enough to rip the fender off its mounts, but not actually damage the fender thankfully!
I wouldn't trust the mileage on the red 1. Looks like its done alot
We agree, we recon its had a fairly tough life.
Def colour change……repair or replace front end? On C5……. Was the drivers seat a toilet😂😵💫👌🏽
Once you get into it…… there might be more problems…..brings it a stolen recovered…..I hope not🤞🏼
Yeah its quite alarming how bad that seat is :D! Still... useful on a long road trip. haha!
I’m thinking copper brake lines will not pass a strict MOT 🤔
Guess we will see, if they advise changing them we will :)! Its on the rear only atm so not a big job :)!
A few of you have raised this, I will speak to my MOT tester but we are thinking we might (off camera) switch the copper to kunifer just to be on the safe side.
I'm a parts expert. Give me five minutes, when i get to work Monday. Any numbers on the old sensor please
Thanks @ZafiraSteve - I’ll dig out the part number and let you know!
@@Auto_Funk thank you. I believe the original part number is 10137658
I think the new project should have an air-ride kit installed, although I’ll admit it’s not that cheap, but how cool would it look when you pull up and drop it,matt grey and orange detailing always looks good for American muscle cars in my opinion, enjoying the videos lads, love and peace from Ireland
A friend of mine really really hates air - ride so... possibly just to irritate him. :D! Guess for it to work you'd need to ditch the composite springs.
Bilt Hamber UC would be better than Lanoguard
Thanks - we are always open to recommendations so we will take a look! Lanoguard seems to be the go-to here in the UK (not sure where you’re based!)
@@Auto_Funk UK too, I’ve recently done an underside resto, I’d highly recommend the UC. It’s what a lot of dry ice cleaners apply after cleaning
Tidy the bodywork and DIY wrap it.
We don't think the current paint will hold a wrap to be honest. There are small flaky bits and bubbly bits all over it that would show through a wrap. Tbh once we've bought wrap, failed to put it on properly :'D, pealed bits off that have taken the paint, fixed them bits, we might as well just paint it. For now we might just polish and do some light paint touch ins for this year, but we do know a good paint guy that would be willing :)!
C4 or C5? A wrap is certainly a possibility for the C5 for sure :) Thanks for watching!
Copper tubing should not be used for brake lines in automotive applications. Here are the primary reasons why:
Material Compatibility: Copper is not compatible with brake fluid. Brake fluid is typically either DOT (Department of Transportation) fluid or mineral oil. Both of these fluids can corrode copper over time, leading to potential leaks or brake system failures.
Strength and Durability: Brake lines are subjected to high pressure and mechanical stress during braking. Copper tubing is softer and less durable compared to steel tubing, which is the standard material used for brake lines. Copper can deform or rupture under these conditions, compromising the safety and reliability of the braking system.
Safety Concerns: Brake lines must meet stringent safety standards to ensure reliable operation under all conditions. Using materials not designed for this purpose can lead to brake failure, loss of braking efficiency, and potential accidents.
Therefore, it is crucial to use brake lines made from materials specifically designed and approved for automotive brake systems, such as steel or specific types of flexible hoses designed for brake fluid compatibility. These materials ensure the safety and reliability of the brake system, which is critical for vehicle operation.
Return it to it's original colour.
Does your neighbour wait for you to start filming so he can get his lawnmower out🤷♂️😂
Seems that way doesn't it!!
What’s has happened to this once GREAT BRITAIN 🇬🇧 that again we have to call on America 🇺🇸 to bail us out with a Cam Sensor 😂, very apt that it’s “ D -Day “ week 😁, USA 🇺🇸, USA 🇺🇸, USA 🇺🇸 LOL 😂.
Tell me about it - For an engine DESIGNED IN THE UK as well ! Life is so unfair
@@Auto_Funk Yeah it is Llew 😂
that "toy" really need bigger wheels
they look tiny
17”s front 18” rear - I think it’s the black colour which makes them look small. I do like a factory wheel though so will stick with them most likely!
Do NOT bypass your throttle valve heater. There is no discernible performance gain and you risk ice build up in humid conditions just above and below freezing temperatures. This is a real risk and not a hypothetical thing. Armchair tuners somehow came to the conclusion that you would be heating up inlet air massively by making your throttle housing a bit warmer, but obviously failed to do actual measurements to prove their theory. Car manufacturers know what they are doing when putting this money costing and complexion adding thing on. There is no emissions or noise benefit to adding it, it IS purely for safety. They don't advertise for it, like they do with crash test results or numbers of air bags, it is purely functional and they could make more profit or "free horsepower" (if that was to be gained) if they would omit it.
Interesting theory - We hadn't planned to bypass the plenum cooling and I haven't done much reading up on it other than learning that it seems to be a common modification! Certainly something we need to learn about for sure although mods are low on the priority list at this stage !
Grrr!! Why can’t you tubers just do one car at a time. It’s really frustrating when they chop and change between projects.
Very fair point Paul! It does annoy me when youtubers get bored and don't finish things! Our dedication is to finish the ZR-1, videos on this car will be EVERY sunday. With the C5 it is very much a background thing and it might even take us a while before we begin work on it. When we do get on the C5 we will post vids of it outside of the Sunday ZR-1 schedule , for instance midweek...
Scrapp it
Ha! Which one?!
For gods sake take your watch off when working otherwise you’ll get your hand stuck in the engine bay or scratch the face to hell 😩
It's true - Slapped wrist! I should take it off when working.... ! Amazingly the face hasn't got a single scratch on it ... Yet !
@@Auto_Funkor - just you do you mate. 👍
Just put it into the dustbin and walk away. Great videos but this is painful
Ha! The C4 or C5?? They both need help!
Also, smoke test for a vacuum leak.
Where is a handy youfth with a vape when we need them! Good idea though worth a look that!
You can bench test the cam sensor, it's basically a hall effect sensor. I have a feeling that maybe your timing may have skipped a tooth and perhaps that is why the car was parked. Just shooting from the hip here.
We have heard it running properly... it runs on and off well... so we think the cam timing is okay and the problem is most likely electrical. Plus we do have a code for cam sensor. But good idea bench testing it, I will take my oscilloscope over to Llews house!
Will described it as he was using the Volvo for the dogs, and one day he went to start the ZR-1 and it didn't run, then before you know it years have gone by. Especially since he was farming I imagine other jobs got in the way and it was never a priority.
We'd be surprised if the timing is off because the car does run beautifully when it wants to!
😂😂😂😂 ... so many cobwebs .. Its like a Haunted House ... omd .. such dullards 😂😂😂
Another garbage video ! Kinda the highlight of my week now ! 😂 very entertaining....
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! :) Are you working on any projects yourself?
