I personally wouldn’t paint it but I would get the areas that need attention done professionally I think the car warrants it
Great update, and I take my hat off to you working in the rain - long time since I've had to do that. Lovely, keep it original it'll maintain the desirability and future value. Personalised is very niche. Look forward to seeing how you solve the running issue. Good luck chaps! Corsair man Dom
Another great update guys! Great to see the ZR-1 move under its own steam in 17 years! Paint looks great - touch up as necessary but otherwise, leave it alone! Brakes not so good....! I'm not going through 335+ comments, but I'm sure someone else will have suggested the Gunson Eezibleed! In my opinion, the best way to bleed brakes! But what would I know, I'm a train geek!!! Cheers, Ross.
Welcome to 'summer' . Our summer is purely notional , methinks. Car's looking go , I knew it would scrub up reet. Regarding the rough running , has it got any dead holes/ Can't really tell whilst the audio was out, but mucho black ,over-richness in evidence out the exhaust. I forget now, but does the ignition on the ZR use the Optispark , or a variation of it? I know it has coil packs , unlike the LT-1, but I figure ther may be something like water where it oughtn't to be , as the injectors are new, you've done plugs and leads etc. Can the timing go off on these ? Anyhoo , I reckon you'll get it before too long. Keep it up, fellas !
Slowly getting there guys. But when you bleed the brakes dont pump the pedal with the bleed screw open. Close the bleed screw pump the pedal gently and then push the pedal down and hold it down then release the bleed screw letting air and fuild out, lock the bleed screw off then pump the pedal gentley again hold down and repeat until no air comes out. Pumping the pedal with the bleed screw open lets some fluid out but will pull some air back in.
Petition to buy you guys a pop up gazebo or car port?
I wouldn't bother painting the car, smart repair the little imperfections, get the wheels refurbished back to standard.
Unless you have a) very deep pockets for a truly professional repaint and b) the current paint is terrible, deffo leave as is! One tip for copper slip. Never let it near rubber eg the caliper pin boots. It causes the rubber to swell as I discovered many years ago. I now use a synthetic GP grease and motor craft caliper pin grease. Hope you can sort the misfire and a summary video of that would be great. Cheers
Keep at it, you’ll get there
Need a pop up canopy (pretty inexpensive in the US) so you can take it out to cover during rain and remove it so it's not an eyesore. Keep up the great work!
Copper slip....iv heard its not necessary between hub and disc, as those parts dont need to move past one another, unlike the brake pads that need to move under braking as the piston pushing on the pad. If your worried about hub and disc fusing together, just use big hammer🤣
Great to finally see the ZR-1 moving under its own power!
I was watching with one eye while washing up but mostly listening while you were bleeding the brakes- what a heady mix of double entendres, innuendo and understated sarcasm with a pinch of irony - keep it up guys - takes me back to the glory days of British TV comedy - you could be the next Morecombe and Wise . Nice to see the car moving to by the way 👍
お兄さん、ハンサム!
Smashing it fellas
White plastic pergolas available cheaply these days.
It's come up really nice, good job. Likely it's had moisture in a box of two, if all else fails clean inside with electrical cleaner/lub and a soft toothbrush. If you get stuck bleeding brakes by yourself use a piece of pipe like you had plug end with(I use a bolt) and cut a fine 10/15mm slit in it, by the bolt or whatever you use to plug hole.So it will close after the pressure has dropped. but put well inside a bottle because it squirts out. If you use DOT 5.1 doesn't damage paintwork. But don't hold me to that have a look. Run it in my BMW E91 been fine, running Brembo pads and disks Std calipers. The gloves you use I only use for things like stripping carbs, for doing most jobs I use the woven backs with latex palms/fingers. More heavy duty can reuse for months. Good luck with finding the fault. 👍
2 days late to the party and haven’t read any of the other comments but, PLEASE, don’t re-spray it!!! If it looks this good on camera after only just a decent polish, definitely worth keeping it original. Thx for getting me through my insomnia halfway around the world.
No apologies necessary for anything. Would certainly “not” repaint the car. Get someone qualified for paint correction to take care of the few marks. Car is simply gorgeous! Look forward to the next update 👍🏼👍🏼
Great work guys!
I agree, please don’t paint it, it looks great!
Man i hope you get the engine sorted on this one. The car came out lovely thinking about where it has sat for SO long. A paint touch up from a good touch up service and you just keep the original paint as is and with refurbished wheels it will be lovely for what it is.
Please clean your guttering
Also you need to do a burn out before you get new tyres
I’ve always used copper slip. My brakes have only failed about 5 times 😂😂 jokes. Copper slip if fine
Look’s great definitely keep it original.I agree with the others more engine stuff😊
I guessed £8k purchase price.
enjoying the polishing music
Funky eh! :) I reckon that last track has got a nice squelchy bass line to it
clean the surface where the cam sensor reads from
Good shout that - We will give it a try :) It could be a mm extra gap is enough to affect the hysteresis
Keep it as it is no new paint huge respekt from Denmark
Denmark! One of our favourite countries! Bang & Olufsen, Lego and a fantastic roster of amazing furniture design - Love it! :) Totally agree on the paint!
Don't they sell portable car ports in the UK? They're cheap for a crappy one here and less expensive than catching pneumonia. And my god that engine runs as rough as a sackful of bottoms.
Runs terribly eh!! Very rich! It's all to do with that cam sensor code 31 malarkey.... We will fix it! Lots of comments about pop up tents etc. Llewelyn would have no wife if one of those turned up on the drive!
Couldnt you invest in a gazebo to at least keep the working area dry?
Unfortunately the wife would deem it to be an eyesore (and she'd have a point to be fair!)
Nice
Thanks James!
Keep the factory paint. Focus on the engine, get it running well, and flog the shit out of it. It'll come around.
Wise words cody! We're really excited to get it running right!! tay tuned!
@Auto_Funk thanks! Been turning wrenches as a hobby for 35 years. 🙂
@@codysp lovely! It sounds like you could teach us a thing or two!!
@@Auto_Funk I'm still learning, especially with computer controlled stuff. Got the mechanical side down good.
get yourselves a cheap tent / awning thing to go over the car, make life much more pleasant
Unfortunately the wife would deem it to be an eyesore (and she'd have a point to be fair!)
Fair play lads doing that is the rain. I definitely would’ve said no chance
We've got no choice in "sunny" Nottingham - Ha!
Oh no, for the people who love engine stuff like myself do a special vid showing the troubleshooting, finding and fixing the engine running issue in fact the whole drivetrain.
Yes, it's tragic the way it misses and belches out black smoke. I think the cats are probably blocked now and the oxy sensor has been wrecked by being coated in carboniferous soot.
@mercmad a good italian tune up once it's running properly should fix the o2 sensors... If not, we've got a pair of brand new Bosch ones ready to go! If you're interested the code is 31 and it's basically not sending a pulse to the ECM (or the ECM is ignoring it). We are going to scope it on saturday so we should know either way!
I feel your pain guys. That British weather can suck sometimes. Have you considered building a carport or shelter of some kind there ? Keeping that beauty out of the weather is a challenge. let alone working in it. Ideally a small workshop would be better. Hopefully when the channel grows and you guys hit the big time you could get one then. The car looks gorgeous after the wash and polish. I wish I could see it in person. Wow ! Keep it original. Don't paint it. I had a feeling it would come good.
Thanks!! Yep it's a pain, but we're used to it!! Seeing the sun is almost a novelty!! We would really like a unit/garage to work in, maybe that will come in the future if we're lucky :) Thank you for the support !
Great Video you guys, like the sound track! What a stunning machine you have there. DONT RUSH IT! She's a fine wine and needs to be sipped to be appreciated. Keep us hanging....bit at a time 😂❤
Thanks Clint, we will keep you (and us!) hanging! Glad you like the tunes! :)
Watching Jonny Smith (AKA The Car Pervert) chase behind it during your intro always makes me giggle. Please keep it in!
Ha ha!! Yeah it makes us laugh as well - What a picture eh!! Jonny is a legend !
I'm sure you've had plenty of offers to help figure out the running problem. I'm pretty well versed in this era gm driveability. Do you have an old obd1 scanner that shows live data? GM called it the Tech 1. The old SnapOn "brick" also works as well as the old OTC obd1 for GM. If you do have the ability to pull live data, I'd like to see a video of all of the readings while the rough running is occurring.
Vance we would LOVE a Tech 1 but they re really scarce here.... For now we are stuck with a paperclip :) :) BUT if we get a Tech 1 or let's say something like a Snap On MT2500 with the right modules we will film the diags for sure. Lots of Tech 2 diags over on our C5 project vids if you're interested!
guys bye a partytent so u have some protection from the weather.. working on an 1986 c4 my self . have some issues with it runing rough to waiting. for some sensors and other stuff from rockauto..cheers from sweden
Unfortunately the wife would deem a party tent to be an eyesore (and she'd have a point to be fair!)... Tell us about your 86? Does it have the 4+3 trans? I bet you'll get it running right soon enough!
@@Auto_Funk it is an automatic with a 270h cam in it and headers red on red with greenwood package and a stalker frontbumper wierd combo haha ..yea i hope it will run right after i get the parts i need on monday
Nice one lads.
Thanks Keith! :)
Def keep as much of the original paint as you can but restore the wheels to original, sorted.
100% the plan! Would you go factory colour on the wheels? We are thinking Lotus gold JPS spec centres with a polished lip
@@Auto_Funk if it were my car I'd stick with silver. Why not do a quick rattle can job to see what they look like gold.
Great video and CHEERS!
CHEERS !
Leave it, as is a car is only original once
Definitely - This one wears it's heart on it's sleeve and still looks AMAZING even with the paint defects (we think so anyway)
Ooooh brakes have made it a little bit more sexy.
Oh man, we agree - It feels great knowing they're all sorted!
Get yourself a gazebo or something to throw up quickly for working in the rain. That’s what I used to do. Great video guys
Thank you! Re Gazebo - Unfortunately the wife would deem it to be an eyesore (and she'd have a point to be fair!)
Don't bother painting it, not because of the originality police (it's your car, do wtf you like with it) but because it's just not worth the expense - paintwork crazy expensive nowadays so not a sensible use of budget.
You're right Paul ! It's actually very satisfying working with the original paint even though it's flawed
I think the paint will come up a treat with a proper detail. As it has sat so long, I would definitely give it a blast with some fallout remover (should really have been done before claying). Use a good pre wash snow foam (Bilt Hamber Autofoam is good), rinse and then wash with a non wax shampoo. Then clay again, do a light cut with a quality compound, wipe with iso prop panel wipe, inspect for defects and repeat if necessary. Once happy, get a good polishing pad and ideally a non resin polish (Autoglym SR polish is good, but has fillers and hides scratches, so good for a quick spruce up, but not if you are applying a sealant). Give it a couple of polishes with different grades of polish (maybe a 2,500 & 3,500 as it is a black car). Then important step, is to use a good panel wipe before applying any wax or sealant, to remove any polish, wax or residue. This ensures the final coat of sealant, bonds with the clearcoat or laquer and is not sitting on top of a coat of polish ( I like Bilt Hamber Cleanser for final step). Then apply a good wax or ceramic coat and should be good to go. Maybe get the paint defects sorted first though, as you will likely have to repeat the process if not when it has been done. Also, careful with that old school rotary on black paint. You can get good results with them, but very easy to get holograms in darker paints. Random orbital / mop is a safer option. I get that this was a quick detail to spruce it up a bit though and you probably had a better detail in mind for further down the line 🙂.
Thanks so much for the tips - We're not experts, just learning as we go and doing our best based on past experiences.... Great shout about the panel wipe, something we completely overlooked. You are right, it was a quick spruce up and a sort of "looksee" to see what we're dealing with. Further work required, me might employ someone to do it (possibly the @thecarcleaningguru if he's up for it!)
@Auto_Funk If you have the time, do it yourselves, more content and people can get better with you 🙂. The only issue you may have is trying to ceramic coat outside with British weather and seagulls / pigeons targeting your newly polished car. It really needs to cure inside for a few days to get max protection. My experience would say, forget the 3 to 5 year type ceramic coats though, they don't normally last anywhere near that long, are more difficult to maintain and you cannot do any paint correction without needing to reapply (minor scratch, birdstrike etc). Personally, I much prefer the semi permanent ceramic coats that you apply maybe twice per year. You can use these outside (preferably not in direct sunlight) and they last around 4 to 6 months on average, depending on cleaning products, environment etc. I have always got on well with Mother's CMX Ceramic Spray. Easy to apply and lasts really well and a bottle will last for many full applications. It will make future cleaning much easier.
