@@alexcramer2878 No fast traveling?!? You might as well start. When you finally beat the game you’re gonna be like, “Yeah I probably should have fast traveled.” Especially if you realize that you missed a quest or an item and have to backtrack all the way to a place like Caelid or something.
There are also some important areas that you’ll be spending a lot of time in that aren’t physically connected to the mainland at all. So once you’re teleported to them, you’re gonna have to fast travel back to the mainland anyway in order to continue the game. There’s one place near the end game that you get teleported to, but if you leave that area and then need to go back, your only choice to do so will be to fast travel. Also the Four Belfries teleport you to places that you can only leave via fast travel.
Might as well just rip off the bandaid and start fast traveling now so you don’t lose 100 hours of your life to backtracking.

Scaling can be good, it's just that many game devs, especially Bethesda, are really bad at it. It's not fun to go around oneshotting everything because your build has become amazing... but at the same time their "solution" is just to make the enemies unrealistically tanky. "Damage sponginess" is a huge issue that dozens of Skyrim mods try to fix.
The better way to scale is to give familiar enemies new abilities, resistances against certain strategies and better AI. Obviously they'll need some more health to just not be obliterated by you, but so often difficulty boils down to "this common bandit can take 18 chops from a greataxe"

    • @theobell2002

I had never played a Souls game before, all my friends said "I would hate it" as I'm the kinda person that plays everything casually and on easy difficulty. But I kept seeing videos, and in addition to looking cool, it was almost comical how often people died. So I went in with the expectation like I was rewinding a final destination movie, that I would die all the time (as a method to alleviate impending frustration from getting too close and failing).
And I had a blast. I mean a genuinely good time. It's not often I can say im glad I didn't listen to my friends. I still haven't beaten it yet, I'm at the Malekith fight (pretty far in) and yeah I'm not bored yet. I also want to now go back and play other fromsoft titles.

These games are as challenging as you make them. Just wandering around and leveling up a bunch makes the game much easier than not exceeding level 100/120/150 like a pvp tryhard. And the game gives you plenty of OP tools to use (especially summons). So while parts of the game feel harder than past FromSoft games, they can also be made much easier.

It took me 210 hours to beat this game, and I was sure I had done everything I was able to, i.e. beat every boss and find every item that wasn't hidden behind some incredibly cryptic puzzle or secret. I started a new character the very next day and in less than four hours I had fought three new bosses that I had never even seen before. It's insane how big this game is.
Edit: I also agree with the point about the graphics. I rarely care much about graphics beyond "that looks good" or "that looks out of place", but they've really nailed it with the color and lighting and post processing and whatnot. I have like 20 000 screenshots of this game and each and every one looks like a painting right out of some of the fanciest illustrated fantasy classics. There's just something about the deep blue shadows, the way torches reflect off of crumbling bricks, and even the silhouettes of backlit objects. And the skies are especially gorgeous. The rolling clouds around Stormveil look so voluminous, and the way the greenish yellow on top contrasts with the azure blue shine from thunderstorms within the clouds themselves is frankly sexy.
Edit 2 (because I just love praising this game): Agreed with the catacombs as well. They're interesting because visually they're honestly the weakest parts of the game in how they all look so similar, but they actually take advantage of that with the level design, and I found it super interesting. Every single catacomb has some theme/gimmick that makes the whole place feel like a puzzle, and every time you come to a room you've seen before in another catacomb, you know that they're gonna surprise you with something different and make you think outside the box. Some of my favorites include riding the flamethrower trap pillars as elevators, and that looping catacomb where you think you've returned to the entrance, but then you start noticing small differences and realize that they've placed two identical areas on top of each other to confuse you. Again, it's an odd example because the catacombs reuse graphical assets more than any other areas in the game, but the way you get through them is always so clever and different, and that's usually because of the repetition as opposed to being in spite of it.

But I doubt any of them can match Elder Ring on Exploration and the mechanics and a lot of stuffs we can do with weapons and sorcery…

I thought that Ragnarock had better gameplay in combat, cause is amazing too, but when you start growing on Elder Ring and watch all the stuff you can do, it blows your mind!!! God of War doesn’t fall short by any means, but the repertory that ER offers just trap you and make you excited to try a new weapon every time or need spells learned and that without talking about the adding magic to some weapons which make them even crazier!!!

I'm at 206.8 hours in on Elden Ring; 120 was just Journey 1, and now I'm having a blast in Journey 2, which is WAY easier when you're loaded up with all your goodies and knowledge from the first run! I think that's what's impressed me the most: From Software gave us more tools than ever before to really customize how you play, a let you make a style that lets you win. As long as you know that ahead of time, (and that death is just a tool for learning), then it's easier to grasp From Software's open world concept of exploring to get more tools, get more practice, and more importantly, find your style! It took me a while; I really like being a spell blade. Once you figure out the weapons, spells, or style you like, I think the game gets easier because from then on, you just invest and get stronger at the thing you do well or really enjoy. There were a few times I really had to reconsider, but for the most part, I love how the game gives you a lot of options. Yes, it's difficult, but unlike a lot of RPG's, you REALLY feel every point you spend and tweak you make IMMEDIATELY, which makes your choices incredibly meaningful! This game really is a masterpiece!

Yeah honestly Zelda breath of the Wild has the same vibes as a dark souls game mechanically. Your given tools, there is an enemy. Go make it unalive. How you do it doesn't matter, you can cheese it or run up and bare fist brawl it for the next 4 hours. Just have fun, and learn to watch and listen to enemies, react to what they are doing but don't panic. You will win, it's only a question of time. To anyone aiming to get into Dark Souls, it isn't as difficult as everyone says, it can be frustrating yes, but not hard. Even the weakest enemy in Dark Souls can kill you if you don't pay attention or panic, that's not difficulty though. From Soft always gives you a way to fight back. You can win, you will win, and when you do you'll feel a feeling that's hard to find anywhere else. Goodluck tarnished one.

To me a hard game is a mechanically challenging one that requires precision, timing, reaction speed, complex button inputs and so on. Soulsborne games were never that. The proper word to describe them is "unforgiving". You get punished harshly for making mistakes, but everyone's capable of learning from mistakes regardless of mechanical skill. Literally the only thing required to succeed is the strength of will to not give up in frustration, which is directly reflected in the story and themes of Dark Souls series with hollowing.

I struggled to get it working and friends laughed at me trying to get this game working on Linux BUT SteamOS is Linux so I was determined. Well, apparently a bunch of other people were determined as well and I now have it running at 60fps with no glitches or freezes. Now I just need to learn how to do combat properly.

Update for PC players regarding performance: it’s apparently a very mixed bag on whether you’ll be able to run the game with or without issues. My personal experience was pretty great and reflected as such in the video, but I’ve read about tons of people (even those with powerful rigs) running into issues. It also seems like the day 1 patch made the game somehow run worse for some people than the pre-release review version. Might be a better call to go with the PS5 version for now or wait for upcoming fixes.

Before that the game was literally unplayable, I recommend anyone having issues try dowloading and installing this thing before trying or crying about anything else.

Fromsoftware announced very early today they were working on a performance patch as well, so it's an issue they're working on at least. Will probably be resolved within the near future for those worried. Waiting a while to let the dust settle is certainly an option, assuming people still want it on PC.

While it's understandable of a feeling at 60 hours in, I think it might be naive to say that every dungeon feels fresh. I felt similarly at 60 hours, but after 200 hours, I definitely had lost any feeling of novelty for at least the last 50 hours in terms of exploration, especially with all the reused content. I'm not complaining, since that's inevitable for a game of this scale, and the variety of enemies is already excellent for its genre. But there's definitely a caveat to the point about dungeon design and how it feels meaningfully novel at scale

It was interesting at the beginning, but for now I'm just skipping optional sections to finish this game, free my disk space and be happy that it's finally over.
I was happy to return to the previous games, but I don't think I would like to start Elden Ring over. It's just too long and exhausting

I played some other great games, and then decided it was time to revisit Elden Ring. It's truly amazing. My first game in this style was Morrowind, so I definitely understand the frustration of playing a weak character, but it had been SO LONG since any game did that, I forgot how to deal with it. After about 15 hours, I finally am feeling the build up of strength in my character, and it's very noticable. Beautiful, difficult and damn near perfect game thus far.
