Happy New Year! Thank you so much for watching! What are your AI Predictions for 2024? Will we get open source upscalers even better than this?
Can I just give a quick thank you for always keeping your videos real and helpful? I never feel that your content is clickbaity or that you're here just for the ads and sponsors. This channel was a go-to for me in 2023, looking forward to this channel in 2024!
@@TheCouriersGambit Really appreciate that! I try and keep my content as valuable as possible for ya'll! Thank you for watching!
👋 have you compared the quality of Topaz GigaPixel AI with other upscalers?
@@LouisGedo I looked at gigapixel a very long time ago, and it is VERY good, still paid, but I think that this free local option would probably go toe to toe with it
In my opinion, text-to-video and image-to-video will grow incredibly in the next few weeks. Happy 2024.
Called it. Nothing beats 16x Upscayling with 0 artifacts, open sourced & locally with models to suit each art style.
Edit: they are also working on a video version too (info on the wiki)
I saw that! Totally awesome! Can't beat open source!
Oh wow, that's great news! A video upscaler would be AWESOME!
i hope they have a donation page, i'll send some love
Upscayle is just a regular upscaler like Topaz gigapixel but Magnific actually rerenders a whole new image with new details. For instance if you generate and image of a mob of people the faces will be messed up and Magnific will add the faces in where as upscayle just blows it up without adding new detail.
This can be a bad thing where identity matters because it turns low-resolution people into different people, defeating the purpose of upscaling.
@@brexitgreens Sometimes you might have to fix a face in photoshop. Still worth it.
@@brexitgreens If you need just typical upscaling, Topez is the standard. or Hitpaw. not this rando company.
Krea and Leonardo do creative upscaling as well. Leonardo’s universal upscaler is very very good.
Magnific sucks, why would you want it to "rerender a whole new image"?
Videos like this is why being subscribed to Matt is a must. Especially this year going into 2024. Already starting off with a banger.
Magnifc is absolutely amazing, but it's pricetag is astronimical to the point of unfair - and even mostly negating how amazing it is. But I think with its success it's clear that upscaling with a tinge of AI 'hallucination' adding details is definitely the way to go. I hope all the AI art generation apps both paid and open source (specifically talking Midjourney and SD) take notice and also simplify the process in achieving similar results as Magnific.
All of that said, an app like Upscayl is already mostly there. And allowing you to install locally? Wow. Very much looking forward to any new updates they come out with throughout this year.
I'm an aboslute upscaling addict now cause it makes both photography, art, and AI generations look so good! Even adding Photoshop generative fill to the mix - the upscalers make the images look more uniform. I love it.
Happy New Year! And keep up the great work. This is going to be a wild year for AI for sure.
Really happy to hear that! Always looking for the best stuff for the people!
I was using Krea a bunch last night, upscaling old game characters. It's super cool to turn 90s-early 2000s pixelated / low res characters into photo realistic versions.
Great video, this is perfect. Been wanting something like this for a while which just takes finished images and upscales it keeping the details identical!
Great tool for quick and hassle free upscaling. Thanks for sharing. An update to this with a little bit of an imagining refiner built in would be great to take it to the next level.
in settings "Read Guide" --> user guide --> Custom Models --> "Custom Models Repository" they have more models ready to download and use.
SUPER helpful! Thanks for helping spread the word!!!
Thanks!
is this for the pc version of the ai?
YES!! As much as was blown away by Magnific, no way I was adding another subscription and at their insane rate SO patience was my plan! Thank U my Ai bro!$
Thank you, Matt. I have been looking for a good and consistently upscaler. Always glad to see a video from you.
Happy to hear I helped!
Thanks for keeping it real and not being bought by big AI ;)
always will be real with yall. I'm all for what benefits the community!
not 1.... not 1 videos I've watched of yours has disappointed me ! nice work matt thanks for the info i would not of know about without you ;)
I agree, Upscayl is fantastic if you basically want no changes to the image and just want it upscaled. It, sadly, doesn't do enhancement as far as I can tell. I REALLY would love something like Krea's image enhancer locally installed. The wait times for Krea's enhancer is quite long at times.
Look into adetailer and ultimate sd upscale
I have been following your channel since the beginning of 2023. Thank you for all the tutorias you have shared with us. I hope you keep teaching us in 2024 ! Happy 2024
Always here for the viewers! thank you for the kind words!
would love to see some Gigapixel comparisons since everyone has seemed to forgot about them
Thanks for another amazing video. Happy new Year!
Very interesting video Matt - love the way it transformed a photo of a friend into an oil painting.
Yes, I agree upscayl is the best free upscaling feature that runs on local machine. I have been using this for a long time.
Love Upscayl, Matt. Love it. Thank you.
I am very interested in AI image upscalers since I do like to work with 3DS rips and use them for things and the digital art version of this makes those game textures look magnificent. Granted, there's only so much you can do for some of these but it does a very good job.
15:04 - Wow..just look at that, Magnific AI did such a great job on ACTUALLY making the image look upscaled in a true sense and not by overly sharpening it like other upscalers ussually tend to do, Magnific AI is the king of AI upscaling undoubtedly.
If you are professional, those prices are nothing and creates a slight, but still affordable, barrier to entry, which is good for business but not unfair.
@@jichaelmorgan3796 The prices are way too expensive still IMO, I wish it was a bit less expensive so everyone could afford it, like if it was say 5 - 10 dollars per month then fine but wer'e talking about much more money per month they ask for just for a few hundreds of images per month which is not that much compared to the time period of a full month but regardless of the price (which I hope would decrease in the future) the Magnific AI upscaler is just outstanding, at least for now it is the best upscaler hands down, nothing comes close to its quality of true upscale it does on images, I hope we would get a free upscaler that can actually compete with it in the not too distant future since I want to use it so bad but I can't afford the cost of it.
@@jichaelmorgan3796 It's still too expensive IMO
have been using upscale for awhile now and I love it
Thank you Matt you just improved my year.
Thanks for the great CZcams channel! What a find! Super fast on my RTX 3080ti, very faithful renders.
I've been using this for quite a while. Did a video of it a couple of months ago. It is pretty nice. There's even another one that's Mac only that is just as good, if not better. Made a video on that one too.
LLM and image generation running inside games and being major selling points for them
I sure hope so! the potential is absolutely MASSIVE!
You are the best man. Thank you for your continued help.
OK I just installed this and it's AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you for telling us about Upscayl.
Wonderful content as usual. Would love it if we get more content about LLMs. Like Mixtral 8x7b and Yi 6b 200k.
Totally agree about this local Upscaler tool vs. Magnific. I wish the local one had a preview option prior to running, and 8x+, but it's free, so it's worth it.
Dude this thing is seriously epic. Well worth downloading!
LOVE your videos! thanks so much for sharing this. I'll definitely be trying it out!
Thank you for the kind words! Happy to help!
@@MattVidPro Been using it for the last hour, and you're right that it's absolutely best with AI rendered "raster" images, like logos, etc. It sharpens and cleans up lines well as it upscales. But it hasn't been nearly as exciting to use as Krea because it doesn't add the type of details you'd hope to see as it scales up -- which to its credit is great for keeping the image more consistent. I'm trying to find some other great use cases for Upscayl where it works really well... a lot of my AI images look almost the same after upscaling with this. Quite subtle.
#1 AI news and techniques CZcams channel. Hands down
I am using Krea for a month, it's so good! Can't wait to try Upscayl
Excellent breakdown, Matt! I agree with you on GPT-5 being a big player for 2024. Your insights on AI upscaling are spot-on. It's astonishing how these free alternatives compete with pricey options like Magnific AI. The local upscale running on personal hardware for free is a game-changer, especially with the flexibility to add new models in the future. It's an exciting time for AI advancements, and your content is always a great source for staying updated. Keep up the fantastic work! 👍
MagnificAI is just another Starlink - designed for "poor, rural communities," but it costs you an arm and a leg, while released🤷♂You wouldn't believe how much these villagers got rich working the land.
@@TheGalacticIndian Amazing breakdown of the AI upscaling tools! It's eye-opening to see how these upscaled images transform, especially with the free tools like Upscale. It's remarkable how technology is advancing, making such powerful tools accessible to everyone. This is the kind of innovation that changes the game for content creators and enthusiasts alike. Keep up the great work!
Gave this a try on my machine (modest 8GB card) and it upscaled to 4K in under 5 seconds.
Awesome stuff! Thanks for the recommendation!
My old hunk-of-junk computer was able to upscale to 4K as well... though it took mine about 2 minutes. Haha. And I couldn't keep using my computer to surf the web while it worked or I'd get an error.
Thank you. Great tool for up-scaling!
Thank you for promoting open source. Read up on some of the open models, I think you might be impressed.
There existed similar apps to Upscayl too. For example Waifu2x-Extension-GUI is also able to use ESRGAN models. (But might be a little overwhelming with all the settings at first)
Yes, a tutorial for reimagining an image with SD would be fricking awesome!! :)
12:45 Midjourney upscales can be run in relax mode. I rarely use fastmode for upscale, particularly x 4
Thanks for the vid!!!! Super fast instal and MUCH faster that comfy!!! Buuuut, even though comfy takes much longer it also looks much better :)
I guess it all depends on how much time you have.
13:30 the oversharpening is a known issue with the v6 alpha, I would expect to see this fixed in the upcoming weeks.
Specify which upscaler you're referring to. It's difficult to tell from the timestamp alone. My guess: Midjourney.
@@brexitgreens Correct.
Absolutely brilliant stuff! Free, works like a dream, versatile and can be installed by dummies like me. Good video!!
Glad to help!
I just downloaded the Upscayl to my Laptop with an Intel GPU and it works - very cool
No way that's crazy good, gunna have to try this myself asap.
Great video, thank you!
Love your AI vids!
thank you so much!!
Upscayl is great, i stumbled on it by chance.
It has about 6 or so various models to do the upscale, experimenting with them can get different results depending on what you upscale. Ran on a MS Studio laptop as well.
I definitely don't like the price of entry for Magnific AI but I have to admit they are absolutely the best and I've been burning through credits like it's nobody's business. The results are incredible.
My biggest question (since I can't try it out myself): does it distort or preserve identities of upscaled faces?
@@brexitgreens it struggles with preserving the identity of faces in my experience. The most use I get out of it comes from upscaling nature and abstract shots, where the individual details can vary and still look good. It's really good at hallucinating nature elements.
Actually it does retain faces very well. It just depends on how you adjust the sliders and your prompt @brexitgreens
Magnific/Krea = UltimateSDUpscale, hallucinates new image via img2img. Can be faithful if you lower its strength, but then it doesn't really upscale.
Gigapixel/Upscayl = real-ESRGAN x4, hallucinates higher resolution. Very faithful.
great CHEATSHEET ... but Giga isn't free... must there be an alternative..?
@@brockly7916 Real-ESRGAN 4x beats Gigapixel in my opinion. Gigapixel tends to make a "tree texture" on everything (skin, buildings etc).
So, it is basically a free Topaz Labs upscaler. I'm still waiting for a creative upscale of the same caliber as Magnific.
are you still waiting ?
I expect someone will release a multimodal, open source AI that runs locally this year. Images, videos, music and of course chat will all be included for free.
Oohh! AWESOME prediction! I really hope to see this!
older non-stable-diffusion upscaler: anime2x.
double-edged sword (its pro is also it's con): non-hallucination-based so only upscales existing details/pixels, and does not require prompt. but also will not add additional hallucinated details.
Definitely wanna see a video on reimagining of for example video games using stable diffusion
Now this is a very fair use of AI, very good and great vid. Cheers.
Yes please do a video on reimagining using stable diffusion.
Thanks, Matt! Happy New Year! Is there a model or plugin that will colorize a black and white photo for this free upscaler?
Thanks for the info. God bless!
Happy New Year 2024 will be very exciting in the AI arena.
Matt, how is this compare to PhotoShop Upscale? Thank you and Happy New Year to you too! 😄😄😄
A good comparison to make would be Vs a non-ai image upscaler. Gimp (free) nohalo was what I was using before. There is also photoshop which should have a nice settings in the newer versions.
Upscayl been out for ages. Been one of my recommended in the MJ and Pika forums for a while. I'm surprised you hadn't heard of it mate :) Works well on my RTX 3070 TI The online version is good as well if you don't have a GFX card
Haven't heard of it until yesterday! Lots of AI tools out there :)
Awesome, Could you share the links of the forum please
Exactly. I've been using it for a long time myself. Didn't see any videos on it by any of the AI people I follow, so that's why I made a video on it a couple of months ago. I think 10 people saw that. :P

"Surprised the cat's ears are sticking through the wizard hat." Sir, when you are making a wizard hat for a cat, how do you normally go about designing the pattern?
😂 I thougt the same thing lol. You can't blame him, he's a dog guy😂
I was having fun attempting upscayl, managed to remove blemishes from a personal photo. Using the same photo on krea turned it into a cartoonish face with a goatee. Had a laugh out of it.
Attempted to use upscayl's result in krea & had issues with the upload.
Since this is open source, it would be great if the developers would share the workflow they're using behind the scenes. You just know they had this same workflow running in ComfyUI first.
I believe it boils down to particular open-source upscale models listed in the options, starting with grampa RealESR-GAN.
At least on Linux, you can actually use an Intel integrated GPU for Upscayl. It also supports running on the CPU, I believe for all models available!
Magnific just looks like a low denoise Stable Diffusion upscale with low strangth controlnet.
Same with Upscayl- they're just using different workflows.
Magnific uses diffusion, Upscayl- uses Gan
What amazed me about Krea is that it even corrected a hand, which was missing a finger.
Oh yeah! I remember finding this about a year ago. It broke on me for whatever reason, so I just stopped using it after a short amount of time. But, it is quite good when it does work.
Happy New Year in 2024, Matt.
I feel like Magnific might be using Stable Diffusion somehow internally and somehow making it stay more close to the original, might be able to make something comparable inside of ComfyUI honestly
I think the same, the results look like a super refine process, even some prompt syntax looks like SD prompts.
Also matt, having a strong prompt with magnific can really make or break your final image. Try resemblance on 10, with creativity at 10
Using upscayl, totally blown away. I have the topaz gigapixel upscale and this is actually better. I've done a comparison. This is better. This is awesome and it's free. You rock! Thank you for this.
16:11 - I'd pick Magnific AI upscale any day instead of any other AI upscaler.
You missed the whole point of the new Magnific and Krea upscalers. Both try to recreate the images depending on how much you want it to do it and in result, create an better image which is enhanced, not just upscaled. Which also allows you to give it a context to the image WITHOUT ANY TRAINING to improve the results even further. This is something i waited for a long time, something that allows image restoration and hopefully videos too soon, but in context of AI images makes thoes even look good when they had flaws.
What you showed here is just an regular upscaler that we had the last 5+ years. The only thing Upscayl does is, pack all those open source ESRGAN based models and so on into one simple app that is easy to use and customizable. But there are even better ones like this one. There are already too many like those. For example: Try to restore an old image from you, or maybe something like an video frame from a VHS video where the image is really horrible. This is where Magnific and Krea become extreemly powerful, as with the text prompt you can tell the AI what is in the image and the AI trys to identify your given context in the image! This makes wonders! Try make that with Upscayl, or ESRGAN in general. You won't see that anywhere this close. Maybe with SwinIR, but which is too hardware hungry in many aspects for home user.
I messed around with KreaAI so far and i am fucking blown away by it. It can really restore images from like nearly nothing, if you give the bigger context to it, which is the most powerful key aspect of it. I got told that all of this is already be possible to do with Stable Diffusion Img2img and some specific model, but haven't that tried yet or saw anyone compareing both.
5:52 I love them! Even if wasn’t free, the amount of open source software that seems almost intentionally difficult pisses me off so much.
man do i concur, with little to no tool tips, or simple picture explanations, ie do this, get that and show a 10 pic range from 1-10 of the effects for the setting. so many settings have cryptic names to them as well. like idfk know what Gelling does or whatever the setting dial is.
By the way, Fooocus too has an AI upscaler built in. Actually I prefere it to Krea... which gets too creative too fast. You can control the level of creativity with a slider.... in the Dev Tools section. I'm able to put an artistic gloss on my final Photoshop bashups using this technique.
I have integrated intel graphics and it works just fine. Granted, slower but it does work fine. No crashes.
The problem with Upscayl is that you can some time get; depending on the image blocks or lines that run through the image. The best upscaler I have so far is ChaiNNer. It is an extremely versatile upscaler that works with nVidia, AMD, Arc, and the CPU.
I am using it for months =) Surprised that you just found out.
Magnífic is probably using ControlNet Tile, that is able to reimagin sections of the image (and is amazing if you provide the original context)
I think this too, but they certainly have an own upscale model too.
upscayl is bomb!Thanks!
It works well with digital art, not so well with real photos. With low quality photos it mistakes skin texture, pores, wrinkles and fine hairs for noise so it removes those details in the output file instead of making them sharper.
I like the cat's hat. I imagine there are little ear holes on the rim of the hat. Makes purrfect sense to me.
I wonder how Upscayl compares to Topaz Gigapixel AI. I'd be interested in a comparison. Speaking of Gigapixel AI, they've got a new version on the way very soon. Their website says Version 7 will be available January 16. Idk what features it has over the current version, but I'm intrigued. Will you be testing it & doing a review Matt?
I'm for the reimagining with stable diffusion locally video has alternative!
Reimagining is the real magic, IMO
Amazing
WOW! Verycool!
I am using Upscayl without a NVidia GPU (actually an Intel Integrated GPU) and if you have a little bit of patience you can use it without any problem.
thank you Matt...
AI upscaling is what's keeping my 12MP full frame camera relevant 😍
Wow the local upscaler magical wild how bad others are till u show it up close comparison. Amd fact local amazing. Thanks for sharing love it thanks as always. And again blessings this 2024
I agree that Magnific is too expensive, but on the other hand, I don't know how these generative AI companies are going to stay afloat. It costs something like 36 cents US for every ChatGPT prompt. It'll be interesting to see where things end up, because as of right now, these companies are far more expensive to operate than it's worth for them. That's probably part of the reason for the whole shakeup with the Sam Altman firing and re-hiring at Open AI. He's pushing them to be more commercial, when the mission was to be open source. Fascinating stuff.
... can't beleave that this is real. I tested it - it IS real. And pretty fast. Very fast. Wow, thank for this great discovery!
And this is how things will continue in the AI scene... There are commercial providers, and shortly afterwards open source will surpass them. Very good! There is a good market for commercial providers, and there is a wonderful playground for free creative developers. It's on! Thank you Matt - it's fun to witness your enthusiasm. By the way... are you getting enough sleep? ;-)
Just a question but could Frame Generation tools from NVIDIA and AMD be linked to software like Krea and Magnific's uses to change the frame 1 to generated frame AI realistic frame to make video games more realistic ?
NVidia is working on that .. but currently even the 4090 just does not have the speed or VRAM to do it in realtime… their latest AI Enterprise cards can though (if you are willing to pay $10,000 for the lowest tier one (48 GB VRAM).
been using up upscayl for a few months now, hope it stays free after this lol
Magnific better be watching and adjusting their plans to acquire users
I agree
So I did a little bit of digging around the Magnific Team 🧐 (Cofounders).... My thoughts are below.
They are experienced and know how to grow users on a platform. I actually don't think they will greatly reduce the cost until they grow their paid user base, reduce the cost of operating their model and then they could have a cheap/free/trial option with limited generations when they feel they've achieved product-market-fit and want to aggressively pump the user numbers.
They dont seem to have raised external capital publicly. It would seem they are pricing for sustainable margins with a premium framing of the product. It's a very low-risk strategy, as opposed to many Gen AI products with free or loss-leading pricing models, designed to acquire the masses of casuals and professionals as quickly as possible - then raise capital to keep up the growth trajectory (Leonardo ai)... they know exactly what they are doing and exactly what Leonardo is doing, smart.
AI content creators like yourself and others bringing attention to the best products will increase sign-ups regardless of the pricing, especially among those who earn money from high quality image creation. The product is undoubtedly useful for it's target customer base, who are NOT casuals. They have followed strategy from the software startup playbook, find a niche and be noticed as one of the very best at solving a problem that significantly helps people/businesses who directly make their money from the outcome. The value the product delivers is more than the price paid by many professionals.
Quick Example:
If you make $500-1000 from a batch of great images, and get repeated work, referrals, or more clicks due to the impressive finish of your images, then it's worth atleast $100.
If 5,000 Photographers and other creatives generate the company an average ($39-100 ) of £70/month then that's $350,000 / month, $4.2m annual run rate.
Fast forward to 2025, they grow to 20,000 users paying an average or $70/month, that's $1.4m/month, $16.8m/ year... they can exit quickly to a large creative company or funded competitor for £150-300m...
Unless they feel like spending ages on adding endless features to grow and want a Unicorn, it would be a wonderfully quick exit 😂
