      I think that it's a confusing thing about figure skating (even tho I'm not sure).
      The ISU, the organization that rules this sport, usually refers as "folk" to what is often known as "world music" that encapsulates folk but also everything that is more or less typical of one place.
      That season they had to choose for the original dance music that was folk or country, so they chose indian music and that's why they were labeled as indian folk even when it's just mainstream indian music

    • @roddo1955
      @roddo1955 Před 4 lety +46

      @Ashish yadav it was cultural appreciation. Canada is a meltingpot. Meryl and Charlie represented that cultural diversity as there is a substantial group of Vancouver citizens of Indian descent. Their cultural background and it's origins are celebrated by two athletes of european descent. That is not appropriation(which is a real thing); it's appreciation.

    • @MJ-iu7gm
      @MJ-iu7gm Před 4 lety +57

      @@roddo1955 as an Indian, I agree with roddo here. That was cultural appreciation at its purest. All the respect was paid to the culture, while making sure that the athletes enjoyed performing too. There's no better way to embrace Indian culture than that. I’m Indian and I can say that they represented our culture wonderfully! It’s awesome to seen some appreciation for Indian culture from different countries! 🇮🇳🇮🇳
    Edit: to everyone in the comment section saying this is cultural appropriation, I understand you but you also need to understand me. I’m an Indian immigrant who loved to England 3 years ago, in places like England or the US, cultural appropriation exists and can be seen as offensive. For people who come from other places like India, it’s seen as appreciation of culture and is something positive. That’s just how I see it but I understand people not seeing it like that.
    Edit 2: those telling me that this doesn’t represent my culture, please consider that in India, a lot of media looks like this (stereotypical Bollywood style) for me this reminded me of when I would visit the cinema with my friends and reminded me of things I’d watch back home. For me, this represents my culture’s media. That’s all. Also, not all Indian people may feel the same and that’s okay.
