So recently I've been asked a lot about whether I have a practice schedule / routine, and whether I create practice paintings.
The honest answer is - I no longer practice watercolor painting.
    I simply paint.
Whatever comes out - comes out.
If there is something I feel like I need to improve it, I simply explore it until I understand it fully.
I solve the problems and then move on.
Let me know your thoughts in a comment below.
And if you're SERIOUS about watercolor painting, feel free to check out my new Patreon post on what I learned from 8 years of watercolor painting.

Another fear one might have regarding practise is if practise is limited to just sketches and studies. I might practise three times a week doing sketches or studies, but not full paintings. They’re never really complete. In that sense, if all you do is practise, you will never get better at finishing touches. You’re learning perspective, temperature, contrast, colour theory, brush work, line work, etc. But to finish strongly is just as important a skill as all the others. And the only way to do that is to move from sketches and studies to finished pieces. One can easily develop a fear of moving to the next stage if all they do are studies on a sketchpad.

The way I see it, is that painting itself is the best practice. A finished piece gives you all the practice you need!😊

I simply don't have the time or energy to "practice." Every session is an exploration and on-the-spot problem solving. I am absolutely astounded at how quickly I have progressed and how satisfying my paintings turn out. Lots of room for more growth, for sure, but that just means more opportunities to just get down to it and just paint!😁

Thank you, Liron, for always taking the fear out of painting difficult subjects. You are a great artist & teacher. I would like to call you Professor Liron.😊

The Patreon self examination was very interesting. Seeing your older paintings again was like seeing old friends.

Whew I thought that I was the only person who didn’t practice. I just make art. When I was selling my paintings, I sold as many as I could paint, across all mediums. So, I guess you made me feel better now that I have jumped back into my studio. Thanks!

I also practice by making a painting. I like to learn on the fly. You are such a great communicator. Stay safe, Liron.

This is perfect timing for me. I have been practicing instead of finishing paintings. It’s not as fulfilling .

Thanks for that observation about ‘practice painting’ True. I find for me it’s a way to avoid the fear of messing up a 'real' painting. If anything I start a painting which I’ve thought about a lot and sometimes try out a difficult section on a scrap and if satisfied, I continue on the large painting.
I really enjoyed your Patreon blog Liron. It was fascinating to see the transition between your beginnings and where you are now. What a difference! 👏👏👏

“It’s not a skill gap, It’s an observation and understanding gap. Once you understand how to incorporate a skill into a painting while you are in the heat of the battle, so to speak, the problem is solved.” Perfectly said.

Exactly how I'm able to learn so quickly!
On the other hand, practising is interesting to get a habit in the muscle (when you know what to do already) and to be able to go quicker and to be more "spontaneous" when you paint.

I checked your article, it was very interesting. I've been following you only in the past 6 month maybe, and it was good to see your progress. I am still in my first year of watercolours and I hope I will improve in the upcoming years. Thank you for creating videos for us, without generous artists like you I would never be able to learn and improve.

It's true...commitment to do a thing x times a day or week is often the quickest way to ensure that you won't do it. There are some people that need that kind of certainty and regularity up front and there's nothing wrong with that...if it works for them. For me, my deep desire do things bc I have a passion or need that motivates me is what works best for me. Then any schedule I develop for "learning" a thing just comes naturally, without pressure!

I don’t practice…..I paint. As I paint, some areas work out better than others. That’s “practice”.

😮❤ this takes a lot of pressure off of painting. It's much simpler to find the problem work it out and fix the problem. Thank you so much Liron

And people get hung up on the adage that so many hours of practice makes a master but it's not just doing it over and over. If you commit the same mistake again and again in "practice" you are instead teaching yourself the mistake, ingraining it. Going after making a "finished" piece every time is a far better way to put those hours into your craft.
    ...
That being said, I do produce what I consider to be "practice". Fan art pieces, studying what I love about a work by replicating. But invariably, I wander off and do something crazy with it, crazier than I would do with something I considered just my own. I can put pressure on myself with original ideas that I don't feel when reproducing so they become a kind of free experimentation where I'm absolutely unconcerned with the end result, just seeing what random ideas that pop into my head end up growing into. I suppose I'd call them test subjects.😂 Particularly since I'm mixed media and not always sure how different mediums will interact.

Thank you Liron! It's been a while since I bought your course on your website, and I wanted to revisit it after watching today's video. However, it's not accessible anymore. I receive an error message. Did you delete your courses? I thought these would be available for good once you purchase them. Be well!

Hmm I think I’ve never practiced at all. If I want to learn a certain technique, I just choose a topic that is conducive to that and try creating a finished piece. Maybe a small and simple one, but something that I can count as complete. I can’t imagine practicing e.g. washes, because if I am not interested in the end result, I won’t be focused, they will turn out bad and I’ll lose all motivation.😅
