From a general overall health standpoint, it’s clear that breathing through your nose is more beneficial.
It filters allergens and humidifies the air and as you breathe through your nose your paranasal sinuses release NO which improves the overall efficiencies of your respiratory system but there are a lot more benefits that people (including myself ) overlook.
A huge one was the link between obstructive sleep apnea and mouth breathing. I've spent the last 15 years of my life using a CPAP machine only to recently find out that in my case it wasn't needed...
On top of that the benefit of working and exclusively breathing through the nose is that it builds up your CO2 tolerance. This will allow you to breathe more efficiently, improve oxygen delivery and delay fatigue…

Mouth taping is the best thing I’ve ever done to sleep and feel better. I think I’ve been doing this for 10 months now: you get more deep sleep, mouth isn’t dry when I wake up, fall asleep faster, and you don’t wake up to pee at all, which is a weird but welcome side effect.
The waking up to pee part is why I’m going to try this!
Why are they connected?
@@stuflikethis A few possible things. 1. I vaguely recall in Breath by James Nestor some kind of feedback from mouth breathing. 2. I think as well you drink more water before bed to offset the dehydration and dry mouth, which you get anyway, and then when you wake up you feel thirsty because of that feeling so you drink and feel relieved only to repeat that again. 3. When you are able to achieve high quality sleep your body knows to contain pee better I guess… those automatic functions just work better and suppress the need.
@@stuflikethis this is only speculation but when you mouth breathe you get dehydrated, which means your kidneys work harder and you pee more, and it has to get rid of salt
@@stuflikethis you excrete antidiuretic hormone during REM SLEEP. You will also have tons of sleep apnea in REM sleep if you have sleep apnea. So, by controlling sleep apnea you don’t make as much pee during the night.
I did yoga for years in my early 30s and learned how to deep breathe through my nose. Now it’s the only way I breathe all the time, to the point that a stuffy nose makes me feel like I’m dying. 100% recommend nose breathing.
I didn't realize that there are some people that didn't breathe through their nose.
do you recommend any youtube videos for yoga nasal breathing exercises?
and really helps reducing anxiety after 2 weeks too, see my last vid: Mouth Taping Explained
Hello Ryan. I truly appreciate all the work you put in. I've been lifting weights since I was twelve i'm forty six now. And I've learned so much from watching your videos that it has allowed me to expand on my repertoire of exercises. I've been able to break through some plateau's and make some advancements on my muscle tone that I wasn't able to do before. And i've been able to calm my shoulder joint. I always enjoy your humor. It's been really great learning from you. Thank you again sir..

“Breathe” was a phenomenal book that changed my outlook on how I breathe.
I’m gonna have my wife try this while awake.. she doesn’t have sleep apnea but would be beneficial to my mental stability.
Edit; y’all are goofy 🤐
I can tell ya. This method really works wonders. No more headaches.
Huh. Larry. Us !!
...and that's how the fight started. 😅

I've been doing this for several months now and I swear by it. Never felt so focused or had so much energy!
That was my favorite book I read last year. James Nestor is a gifted and informative storyteller.
Yeah, this is a great book. Went through it a couple of times. I've done the tape thing. It works. But often times the hard part is getting used to just sleeping through your nose. You get there. A netti pot is really, really key too.
Sleeping like this for around 2-3 years now and implementing nasal breathing in everyday life and (light) cardio/activity - love it!
Dude, wake up!!!
how are you breathing through the workout? me for example - i cant inhale and exhale through my nose alone. do you breathe only through your nose when lifting and lowering a load?
@@mati4604nose in, mouth out
I read this book as well. It’s a good one. It’s such a fundamental thing that many of us don’t understand how to do. When we breath correctly and efficiently it can make all the difference.
Ryan is a true inspiration to me, and his impact on my life cannot be overstated. Reallyhelped me develop a healthier lifestyle, a more positive mindset, and a greater sense of purpose. Si now I have become more confident, more focused, and more successful in all areas of my life. Really grateful for helping to find my passion in fitness now im trying to film my workouts and dreaming of becoming a fitness influencer one day.
Thanks for sharing, Ryan! This is great info that's not out there enough. Apnea or not, mouth-breathing is a real issue for many people.
I’ve done it for two years. I find I get a better sleep, better dreams, and more muscle development, and I’m in my 50s feeling fantastic, no injuries at the moment and on zero meds.
I'm late to this video - do you recommend any specific mouth taping products?
@@marydd4147would also love to have some recommendations
This video was super well written, loved it! I started with the hostage tape pack last week. I have been waking up super refreshed, can't believe the difference
Ryan you are a great host! Informed and had fun watching. Well done man.
Great advice. Sleeping elevated has cleared all my sinus issues in the morning. Nose breathing and keeping mouth shut has kept me from waking up with a sore throat from snoring. Both have helped immensely!
the whole video is basically "u need to breath through ur nose more" and "I tried an experimental thing from a book and you should too" elongated to 5 minutes. where's the great advice???
Doesn’t it hurt your neck?
What do you use to be elevated and do you side sleep???

I had severe asthma as a child and went to a specialist clinic a- they made me do this as much as possible. Playing video games, watching tv and sleeping it did wonders!
Now read, oxygen advantage by Patrick Mckeown
😂love you videos I’m 64 now and in good shape. I’ve taped my mouth for about 10 years. Loved it the first - next morning- no dry mouth-gunk in my throat- and my nose was more clear than I ever remembered and snoring greatly reduced!
Great book my doctor recommended it to me. It is amazing how conscious you become of your breathing.
I've been on CPAP for the last 12 years, have just started taping. Everything Ryan said is correct. Another positive is that nose breathing is better for your gums. If your gums dry out, eventually your teeth fall out. CPAP is better than no CPAP but lots of issues mainly around leaks, rainout, marks on your face, and hygiene. I've only been taping for a week but I sleep better already.
You also don't have to wake up and pee as much weird affect but it helps
Thank you for the vid coach. Keep us updated with your progress. I struggle with this issue as well.
Yes, James Nestor's book is excellent, compellingly written! Thanks Ryan for the great content.
Great video! I never knew you dealt with any of these issues. Thanks for sharing everything Ryan!
I had surgery in my early 20s to correct a deviated septum. The rush of air when they pulled out the cotton wool afterwards almost made me high! Hadn't breathed through my nose for years up until that point. No idea why I'm telling you this 😅
Had the same surgery! It was amazing at first. The pain from removing the nasal splints and the eventual scar tissue that developed, it’s worse now😅😅

I’m a huge believer in the NeilMed Sinus Rinse routine. It’s been 13 years now twice a day. Takes 3 minutes start to finish. 70 years old. Don’t want to jinx myself but the sleep quality, incidence of URI’s and probable contribution to overall immunity is life changing. Wise recommendation, Ryan. Love your videos!
The sleep video! Finally. . . exceeded my expectations. This is a really good video . . or in Ryan speak . . phenomenal!
I've been working on exclusively nose breathing for a while and I think it's made my allergies much better - almost never need antihistamines anymore when I was using them a few times a week.
Been doing this consistently for a couple of months now. Honestly life changing.
in what ways?
Been doing this for over two years now. You may not notice it right away but you do start to feel better rested. I was about two months into the mouth taping when one night I forgot. Woke up very tired and a dry mouth (a sign you are sleeping with your mouth open). It took a couple times of forgetting to tape up at night to really realize the benefits I was getting from taping.
@@robmagz I would say the one Ryan is using in his video. The tape for the bearded must stick to the lips. I don't have a beard so I couldn't say for sure. I use the 3M surgical tape but if I don't shave for a couple of days it doesn't stick very well. A tip for the non-bearded, 3M surgical works well but many say you can directly stick it to your lips. DON'T DO IT! And if you have chapped lips and stick the tape directly to your lips....you will be hating life when taking the tape off! What I do it cut a 4-5 inch piece of tape, then I cut another piece of tape about 2". Then I take the 2" piece of tape and wrap it around the long piece of tape about 3/4 to an inch from one side. Now there is a spot without any adhesive. Put the tape vertically from around the base of the nose down and under the chin. The covered adheasive should be where your lips are. No more ripping your lips off on the quest for a good nights sleep. Here is an Amazon link to the tape I use: www.amazon.com/3M-1530-1-Micropore-Tape-Pack/dp/B0082A9FEM/ref=sr_1_4?crid=9KPG6MF0138P&keywords=3m%2Bmedical%2Btape&qid=1681493124&sprefix=3m%2Bmedi%2Caps%2C641&sr=8-4&th=1
@jeff.... it's weird because the taping should only be transient. How is your tongue positioned during the day when you are breathing through your nose? Is it in your palate? 😊
@@TerrenLiberte Yep, resting on the upper palate for the most part. I still mouth breathe on occasion throughout the day and force a reset when I notice it.
@@jeffbruer8735 👏😉
I am turning 43 this January and last time few months ago I checked my 1 breath exhalation lasted 1 minute and 42 seconds. Compared to just 47 seconds when i was in my late twenties. I credit this increase to breathing exercises, mental grit from ice baths and overall struggle to get healthier by pursuing strength training, eating better and sleeping better.
You have to want to get better first then put in the work. And i think i can cross 2 minutes if i work at it in a few months. But it is just one of the marker of your fitness.
I want my VO2 max 20% better in the next 3 months now! Have a great year ahead folks ❤
Love the humor mixed with facts, Keep truck'n brother. Love your Videos
Way ahead of you. When I was 5 my brother traumatized me by telling me breathing through your mouth causes 'irreversible itchiness of the lungs'. I never let myself breathe through my mouth since 😅
My wife read the book around christmas and started taping her mouth. I sleep better now. I believe she does as well. Coming to resistance training from running and freediving, I belive it was a little bit easier to bring the nosebreathing to the gym as well as I was used to it. The book is a very good read.
gotta put my wife into this too
@@renand3zand mine, she can practice in the day too.😂
Been a lifter for 52 years with Obstructive Sleep Apnea and I finally started on a CPAP machine a couple of months ago. Had a problem with my mouth constantly dropping open and breaking the air seal around the mask which kept waking me up all night long. I tried the chin strap to keep my mouth closed but I hated wearing it and since I have a beard and mustache I don't want to use tape. I finally bought a $12 neck brace which keeps my chin from dropping down while I sleep. It worked! So I now sleep all night with my mouth closed and breathing through my nose is becoming easier, so much so that I gave up using nasal spray. As a side benefit from wearing the neck brace every night my chronic neck pain has also decreased. Yeah, it sucks getting older but since adjusting to the CPAP machine I actually feel much more rested when I wake up in the morning. If you're a bodybuilder and you snore the odds are almost 100% that you have OSA and should get a sleep study done.
An amazing and highly important read! 👏🏼
Quality content. Thank you.
I read this book and I’ve been telling everyone about it. The progress is tremendous, I went from being addicted to nasal sprays and waking up with dry mouth and stuffy nose every morning to a normal life with no breathing issues, all because of using techniques explained in the book.
I’m addicted to nasal sprays - they work and my nose is stuffy without. Any advice?
@@renegade2853 I was too and the more you use it, the more you make your nasal passages more damaged.

Seeing someone else advocate for what I dub "nasal douching" made my day, I love that shit. Great vid man!
Been doing this for 5 years and have become an early riser which I never was prior. Now if I even take a nap without taping I notice I don’t feel as refreshed. I recommend this to all my friends with big cpap machines they have to wear on their entire head but they think I’m the crazy one for putting tape on my mouth ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
it's weird because the taping should only be transient. How is your tongue positioned during the day when you are breathing through your nose? Is it in your palate? 😊
Been developing some nasal issues the last few years after a reaction to a medication I was on. Now I have to expel mucus all the time, and I often wake up with dry mouth, feeling like garbage. Decided it was worth finding out more about this, so I placed an order for the book. €14 for the pocket edition seems like a good deal if it can really have such profound effects on one's health.
Hello! What was that medication?😊
Ryan you always deliver with authentic humor.
Good to have you back mang
A thing that helped me a lot is the mute nasal dilators, now I basically nasal breathe all the time & I was one that couldn’t breathe thru my nose before , you gotta force yourself to do it !!
I saw that at the store earlier. Might give it a try
I taped my wife's mouth and nose up last nights after finally reaching my threshold for her snoring.
I don't think she approved as, for the last 8 hours, she's just been lying there, giving me the silent treatment.
Go figure. She’s at peace now🌲
Great video! I read that book a few years back and started applying it definitely see great results by doing it!
That book is legit! I race Outrigger canoes competitively and have been training with mouth closed since I've read that book and my endurance has dramatically increased. Highly recommend that book!
BEGINNER TOP TIP: USE A NOSE STRIP. If you struggle to breathe from your nose in the first place (and randomly wake up throughout the night out of breath) when taping your mouth shut, start off with a nose strip. After a few weeks your nasal passage adapts and opens up and then you'll be able to do without a strip.
What’s a nose strip?

That's what I came here to say
In all seriousness, I've been doing this for 3 years now and it's changed my life for the better. I usually get sick once or twice per year now.
I feel more refreshed with 6 hrs of sleep than I used to sleeping 8-9 hrs without tape
Great tips, I’ll definitely give it a 2 week trial.
You have the best presentation of sarcasm of anybody on CZcams.
Got to admit I've always tried to regulate my breathing through my nose when I run. It makes it a bit harder but gives your lungs and diaphragm a workout.
The top runners in the world including the record holder all breath through their nose.
Try inhaling through your nose but exhaling through your mouth
ideally you do low Q exhale aka high resistance aka nasal breathing to keep your co2 levels high because high co2 means higher O2 binding to Hemoglobin. @@cben86

Hell yeah. Been doing this for at least 2 yrs now after reading Breath. The big subjective evidence I have is when I forget to tape, I definitely feel worse in the morning. Micropore medical tape has worked fine with facial hair for me as long as I keep the my upper lip hair trimmed, I just put the tape horizontally on my lips. You"ve got my sub for this intro!
Great of you to show everyone the wonders of mouth taping! It really is a God send and can transform your sleep. That being said, you don't need to tape your whole mouth, ouch. Instead, place a small bit of tape between your top and bottom lip. This will effectively seal your mouth during sleep, even if it feels a bit flimsy.
Interesting, will try.
Any tips on grip strength/endurance planned in the future?

Thank you Ryan for this video. James Nestor's book Breath saved my life. Just recently diagnosed with sleep apnea. I fuqqing hate using that stupid machine. I have nasal polyps which is always been an issue with nasal breathing but I am working on it. Have not tried mouth tape but it is time to give it a try. Perhaps will get the chin strap to keep the jaw shut and properly aligned.
LOL! I love your sense of humor! I just started mouth taping again (I forget why I quit the first time, but it wasn't because of anxiety about it). Also, Xlear is a nasal saline rinse that adds xylitol. I've taped my mouth shut a couple of times. It helped a bit, but incline about 10 degrees in combo with the taping worked best.
Such a good short video on this topic thanks for spreading the message in such an easy & digestible way!
You Rock 🪨- keep up the good content!
Taping my mouth has changed my life...no more snoring and I sleep through the night. The weirdest thing is I always feel like a have a stuffy nose but when I tape my mouth my nasal passages are wide open, even if I have a cold. I think it has something to do with the humidity and mouth breathing and the drying effect it causes. Kinesiology tape works great, just cut 3 o 4 vertical slits (about 1/4" long) in the middle of your lips in case you have to cough, etc. You can even drink water with a straw this way so you don't have to remove the tape.
I have been sleeping with Breathe Right strips for a few months now and it does wonders for my tiny nostrils.
Another great video. I have sleep apnea and originally was given the chin strap and the nose cups but had to go to nose/mouth when I had surgery on my nose. Next Dr appt i am going to ask them to put in the referral for me to go back to that.
This guy is great. Funny. I'll subscribe to enjoy his fast paced energy and good research. I am a mouth breather. I read the book. Shut Your Mouth. I then have periodically gone through phases of doing the tape at night. It's just a pain in the ass. I need to be far more disciplined and go for it. Thanks Ryan.
