In this video Canadian Guitarist/producer Dean Wolfe reacts to his 2nd full classic shoegaze album (stay tuned for more) called Loveless by My Bloody Valentine.

    Part 4: • pt4 Album "My Bloody V...
A LITTLE ABOUT ME: I'm Dean Wolfe, a mostly self-taught Canadian guitarist/composer/multi-instrumentalist/singer/producer/performer. I started out as a full time musician, on the road at age 17 for two years, then went part-time ever since, while holding day careers including chef and spiritual health care while raising a family.
As a producer I've made hundreds of my own songs for media and award winning documentaries etc. I've been in several bands including a prog/jazz fusion act nFuze, performing in International Jazz festivals and jazz clubs. I mostly abandoned the prog genre in the 90s but have returned to it now with vigour 30 years later. So much prog! My own prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i detoured into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk / acoustic fingerstyle guitar and ambient electronic as well). At the end of 2022 I fell into a shoegaze rabbit hole (so you will see lots featured here.)

To Here Knows When is one of my fav songs of all time. It’s just an ecosystem of textures and ideas and it all sounds so loose yet so intricate. I get lost in it everytime I put it on.

You listened to loomer for the first time and immediately imagined the ‘infinite horizon’ that shields referenced in interviews and featured in artwork

I heard this album when it first came out. When I heard the first track ("Only Shallow") I knew I liked it. When I heard the second track ("Loomer") I fell deeply in love and the feeling has never left me. I put this on and I feel exactly the same way I did at 16 years old, stoned off my ass, practically drooling into my Munchos, positively enchanted.

Loveless is probably one of the top 3 albums of all time for me. It's wonderful to see someone experiencing the wonder of discovery and bringing it all back to me! Thank you for this gift! It's also great to get a musician's impressions of the music I love (Cos I'm for sure no musician :D)
Wrt the vocals, I tend to think of MBV as an instrumental band where the vocals are part of the instrumentation. The feel and sound of the vocals seem to be more important than what the lyrics actually are.

Just blasted this in the house this morning.... perfect timing for this video.
Bought this when it was released, and it is still an incredibly unique listen.

I had horrible insomnia in my early 20's and this album pretty much was the only way I could sleep from about '94 to '99 or so. Dreampop indeed. Amazing soundscaping. Definitely a top 5 album for me. Also the sole reason for me picking up a Jazzmaster (back when they were cheap), heh.

@progdogchannel Condolences. I mostly had "cheap Japanese shredders," which I sold or traded away that are worth a fortune now. Fortunately, I stashed my JM at my rents house, as I rarely played it. Happy accidents.

this album is great, if you want a more prog influenced dream pop record you should definitely listen to long season by fishmans, it’s a one song album that’ll take you on a whole journey. since the song is so long it’s definitely okay to pause throughout for comments, or just talk over it as the lyrics are all in japanese (they’re also pretty few and far between)

Been meaning to watch this. Haven’t watched your Lush video yet, which I will get around to at same point (saw them live in the 90’s). Trying to remember how disorienting this must have seemed to me on a first listen in 1992, since this was the first MBV music I heard. Very beautiful, dissonant, oddly soothing, and transportive music. There still hasn’t been an album quite like it. Thanks for being open-minded.

Love this album, been listening to it since it was released. The college radio station that I attended and worked at had this album in rotation right from the start.
I labeled Leprous as a shoe-djenting band since the first time I saw them live, they have aspects of shoe-gazing to their performance but also some djent thrown in.

I’ve been enjoying your Radiohead reactions. I subscribed back when you went on your Tool journey. I never got into this genre as a whole but I love this album. Have you ever listened to Hum? I’d love to see you react to their album Inlet or Downward is Heavenward. I know you probably have a long list but if you ever get around to it, I’d think you’d get something out of it. Love the channel.
